CHAPTER FOUR:
~ Drake:
I showed up to the pack entrance by Kyburz to find a small group of werewolves I was mostly unfamiliar with. Shifting behind a tree a few paces away, I quickly changed back into my shirt, jeans and boots. I walked out to see the Alpha of Silver Moon walking toward me, hand raised in greeting. He was dressed well, black slacks and a dark button down shirt.
“Beta Drake, great to see you. I see Alpha Rafael has sent his best representative to show us around?” Alpha Logan of Silver Moon was a friendly guy, and he shook my hand with vigor.
Silver Moon had a great reputation and their Alpha was a huge reason. While they were a fairly small pack their warriors were fierce, and they often came to the aid of their neighbors in need. They never stood down from a fight with a purpose. I wondered again what they were after here. In other packs the Alpha would likely convey that to his Beta, but not mine. I was going to have to find out while pretending to already be in the loop. Fun.
“Great to see you Alpha Logan,” I put my fist to my chest and made a small bow. A little old school, but also a sign of respect amongst wolves.
“No need for that Beta,” he waved me off. “Are we ready to start our tour? My kids are anxious to see the place. We don’t usually travel this far out.”
I nodded, “Yes Alpha. We can begin wherever you would prefer. Packhouse? Training fields? Medical ward? I’m thinking we can end with the recreation area, we just had our pool updated.”
“Let’s start with the training fields. Come meet my kids,” Alpha Logan said definitively with his natural authority.
We were joined by a young man who looked strikingly like his father, Liam. He was maybe 20 years old. And a young woman, Brenna, who looked like her father only in coloring, she must take after the Luna of Silver Moon. She looked young, definitely a teenager. The Alpha explained that his Luna couldn’t join, as she was taking care of her elderly aunt. Alpha Logan also mentioned that his youngest, John, had also stayed behind. I was also introduced to three pack warriors from Silver Lake. Young twins Jacob and Jeffery, top warriors, and the son of the Beta, Daniel. The Alpha’s daughter gave me a very strange look through most of the introductions, and her brother looked outright bored.
“Well, let’s get started!” Alpha Logan said, jazzed. “Lead the way Beta Drake!” He patted me on the back.
We walked for a few minutes before approaching a jeep left out in this area for these situations and I rifled through my pockets for the keys.
“Is it usually this chilly this time of year here?” Brenna, the Alpha’s daughter asked me.
“Hmm… You know, I don’t know. I don’t consider this very cold,” I responded.
She looked disappointed, then looked back at her father who was talking to one of his warriors.
“It’s just, we don’t get snow in the central valley, you know?” She added.
Wow, thank the goddess we were here to be part of this amazing conversation. Wolves decades from now will gather the pups to tell them tales of this moment, Dane quipped in my mind.
I snorted.
Ah, shit. Brenna seemed to notice and turned pink in the face before rushing back towards her father.
You’re going to get me in more trouble with Alpha, I said to Drake. Although that was downright hilarious.
Dane chuckled.
I found my keys and everyone hopped in, with Brenna surprisingly in the front seat. I watched Liam out of the corner of my eye as we drove. He seemed very serious and reserved. I don’t know what kind of match he would make with my Alpha’s daughter, Kylie. The warriors jogged along right behind us.
“We’ll head up into the mountain for a bit on the way to the training grounds so you can see the best view of the packlands,” I announced to the car.
Alpha Rafael asked me a few questions about our training - schedules, selections, and so forth. His son, Liam, seemed disappointed when I explained that we currently didn’t include female wolves in training beyond basic levels. Alpha Rafael was very old school that way. It took so much pushing from my mother to let him allow them to train at all.
A ways up the mountain I pulled over and cut the ignition. We stepped out to the vista point and I took a few minutes to show them various things.
“Down that way is our recreation area, the indoor portion has a few basketball courts and weight lifting equipment, the pool is outdoor only and has a track around the outer rim that circles around that whole area there,” I explained. I then pointed out other buildings including the packhouse, the schools, the medical building, and other facilities.
“Does Black Mountain have any security posts? I didn’t see any on the way in,” the question coming from Liam.
“No we don’t. Our Alpha tore down the few we had some years ago. He prefers we rough it while out on patrol,” I shrugged as I answered.
Liam seemed confused at this. Alpha Logan just shrugged.
Yeah class act, our Alpha, Dane added in my head.
He wasn’t out of line. Don’t get me wrong, we didn’t need those kinds of things, but Alpha Rafael never let us have any comforts at all. The recreational stuff alone was a miracle. He was always a hard a**, but it only got worse after his Luna passed away. Kylie was all he had now, and he took it out on her personally that she wasn’t a male. She would never inherit the pack and needed to find her mate before our pack ever got any relief from this tyrant. If it wasn’t for every single pack member in Black Mountain, this place would have fallen apart years ago. Wolves volunteer their time to keep things up and do things like buy or hunt food for the pups and elderly. Our Alpha just makes comments about their weaknesses holding back the pack.
We spent about an hour and a half afterward visiting each location, and I answered their questions. After some time their Beta’s son, Daniel, loosened up a bit and started participating and asking questions. I noticed he seemed to switch on his sociability after getting ogled by some maids we ran into in the packhouse. They were all pretty easy to get along with. Brenna was silent the rest of the time and would only smile now and again. I still felt guilty about my snicker earlier.
We’re going to have to apologize, I told Dane who groaned in irritation the moment I said it. You know we have to…
At the request of Alpha Rafael I parted with the visitors at the recreation building, leaving them in the care of our Gamma Alwin. We would see each other later at a formal dinner. I was ordered to catch up on some of the Alpha’s paperwork (which he never did himself). I spent my time going through our current finances, and trying to magically make things better after the Alpha’s reckless spending.
Dinner went on pretty uneventfully. Alpha really took the fun out of the room, and everyone adjusted our tone from earlier to one of seriousness. Kylie joined the rest of us and she seemed to click well with Brenna which was nice to see. I saw Liam eyeing Kylie some of the time and it added evidence to my theory about a match. Likely, they wanted Liam to inherit here and his brother John would assume the Alpha role back home.
While most wolves honored the mate bond, it wasn’t unheard of for Alphas to orchestrate matches like this, especially when a pack’s current Alpha didn’t have a son. Kylie had yet to meet her mate and was 24, which was pretty late in our world. I would know, being a year older than her. After dinner we separated again, and I was given orders to give a final check on some new improvements to the Alpha’s private cottage. Fantastic. He used this space to sleep with trashy she-wolves outside of Kylie’s range of hearing. I guess at least he was considerate when it came to his daughter. In this way anyway.
I had a terrible night’s sleep. I tossed and turned the whole time. Something was really agitating Dane and he wouldn’t tell me what it was.
You’ll know soon enough, he snapped at me after some pestering.
The next morning the Silver River pack left early, right after breakfast. Daniel and Liam had joined in on training before breakfast and I got to know them a little more. If Liam was being considered as a match for Kylie, she wasn’t getting a bad deal. We all would be better off than we currently were for sure. Gama Alwin had left to escort our visitors back to the border when the Alpha linked me.
Drake. Office, he ordered.
Yes Alpha, on my way, I linked back. Dane groaned.
Are you going to tell me what’s been bothering you now? I asked Dane, only for him to whine in return. This really couldn’t be good.
I knocked on Alpha Rafael’s door and he told me to come in. He didn’t seem to have anything to say at first and so I stood there as he looked through a file of documents. Likely something I would have to go through myself…
“Here,” Alpha Rafael held out the folder. “Read this and sign the bottom.”
I contorted my face in confusion but took the folder from him. I opened it to see a very long series of papers and started to skim through as he pushed a pen in my face. Then I saw it.
“Alpha. There’s got to be a mistake here,” I told him, taking the pen from his hands but dropping my arm down to my side.
“Sign,” he insisted. “I have other things to get to.”
Yeah, like screwing that she-wolf waiting outside the packhouse… Dane commented. I had no idea how he could sense that far but that was a question for another time.
“No,” I said simply.
Alpha Rfael jumped up out of his chair and came within an inch of my face as he screamed, “NO?! YOU DON’T TELL ME NO! YOU WILL DO THIS!”
I barely remembered to bare my neck like I should as a Beta.
I looked up to his eyes to see him still seething. I wanted to let it rise and take over - my aura, my anger…
Hold back, Dane said. He had never once held me back. His words acted like a cold shower.
“YOU WILL SIGN THIS AND YOU WILL MATE ALPHA LOGAN’S DAUGHTER!” he yelled, spittle flying in my face.
CHAPTER FIVE: ~Avery: “Hey! I’m up here, one second!” A female, melodic voice called from above. There was rustling up on top of the garage roof. I heard leaves crunching and a bucket or something hit the ground. “Uh, are you okay?!” I called. “Yeah, no worries!” The voice assured. Blond hair popped up into view and a cheery, pink face grinned and waved. “Just give me two minutes!” I looked down at my new phone, at the posting in the town’s Facebook page and compared the posted pictures with the small home I was looking at. The few photos didn’t do it justice. Thisplace looked like a Swiss Chalet. It was adorable. This was still looking up. I sent a silent prayer to no one that she would pick me. Elizabeth Meyers, the owner, came around the corner introducing herself. She had dazzling bright eyes and long blond hair that was tied up in a messy low bun. She had gloves on and looked like she had been working outside. “Sorry about the delay, I really thought I would be well done
CHAPTER SIX:~Drake: This is outrageous. I would not do this. No matter how many times I let my Alpha hand me my a** out here in front of the packhouse. I wasn’t going to disgrace the mating bond by just getting with someone else. No way. A kick to the head. I wince. “YOU WILL OBEY BOY!” Alpha Rafael yells at me. I know I’m covered in bruises and blood that will start healing soon. I don’t fight back. Just pray to the Goddess that my parents don’t hear about this and come running. “Please, Alpha!” Too late. My mom is on her knees in the mud and leaves calling for mercy. He looks at her and I flinch, thinking he will hurt her next. But my dad stands between them, and I tell myself that if he goes for them I’m blowing my cover. He will not lay a finger on my parents, or I will kill him. Alpha Rafael howls and marches back to me, spitting at my body laying all twisted on the earth. I’m okay mom, I link her. “Pathetic. You both raised a pathetic wolf,” Alpha Rafael says to hims
CHAPTER SEVEN:~Avery: My first night here and while I felt safe, I was restless. I had fallen asleep earlier but had woken up a few times. Now at 4am, I wasn’t going to fight it any longer. I crept out of the sleeping bag on the floor, and picked up a pillow. Setting it on the floor next to one of the big windows I made myself a temporary chair. I looked out at the woods, pulled my legs under my arms and sighed. The sun would start rising soon. It was very cold out there, although you couldn’t tell just by looking. A breeze came through the trees, rusting the pine needles on the trees close by. I spotted the slight movement of an owl in a tree. We stared at each other for some time. I rolled my neck and looked into the moon, searching it for strength. The moon had helped me regain control of myself when I had nearly lost it. It would maybe be too much to ask for it to help me again? There was knocking on the door.“Amy? Sorry! Are you up?” Beth called from behind the door.I must h
CHAPTER EIGHT~Drake: I was getting hammered. I couldn’t seem to stop drinking. And it took a lot to get a werewolf drunk. But I was feeling it. A lot. I don’t know how Archer found this place or why it was so packed tonight, but the energy in the place was contagious. I came in here expecting to find a sad, dilapidated building and older regulars from the area. Instead it was full of singles and couples dancing, dark booths, and a large variety of drinks. It was more of a club than a bar. Archer and I were honestly having a really good time. There were plenty of attractive girls on the dancefloor and we ended up hanging around a group of girls in town for a bachelorette party. Archer wasn’t as into them as I might be. But it could be lonely as an older werewolf with no mate on the horizon. One of them in particular seemed into me and we went back and forth between dancing and picking up new drinks at the bar. I bought a round of shots for the group and we gathered at their booth.
CHAPTER NINE:~Avery: It wasn’t so bad here. And as bars go, this one seemed pretty different. I was still on guard, trying to avoid the dark corners where seedy behavior could be going on, but I was maybe starting to have fun? The place was more of a dance club that happened to be set inside an old school bar, something you would picture in this woodsy town. But the dance floor, the music, the sound system, the lighting, it was all very modern. And I couldn’t fight it for long. Music sang to me, to my blood. A small dose of what it felt like to control someone, to make them do things. It hasn't always been easy for me to distinguish the two. But thankfully I had grown from those days. The base thrummed and Beth and I twirled around with some girls who had immediately taken to us when we got here. Beth had a handsome tall, lanky guy dancing around her for some time who set my alarms off but after a few looks from me he seemed to back off. Some. After a few songs we went with the ot
CHAPTER TEN:~Drake: “Drake?” Archer said again at my side. My heart beat frantically, faster than the beat of the music thrumming through the bar. Everything felt too hot, too loud. Go to Mate, Dane ordered me. And my foot moved forward before I stepped back for a second. This couldn’t happen to me. I was too restless, too different and dark - and in too much sh*t with my Alpha. GO, Dane ordered again. He whined when I stood still. “I can’t-” I began to say, turning to Archer. “I can’t have a mate.” Archer moved to stand in front of me and grabbed hold of both of my shoulders. “Holy Goddess Above,” he said breathlessly. “She’s here? Where?” He looked around the bar. I pushed him away. “I can’t have a mate Arch. You don’t understand.” I looked at my shoes. Fighting Dane’s barking and howling in my head to go after her. “Drake, I can’t pretend to know what you’re feeling in this second. But you know that we are both - different. Put into other roles, and we’ve had to preten
CHAPTER ELEVEN:~Avery: Hurt came over the handsome man’s - Drake’s face. Oh. My. God. He’s serious. I mean, I guess I shouldn’t be this surprised. I exist. Why wouldn’t other otherworldly creatures exist? I felt a need to comfort him, to take away the hurt I caused. “I’m sorry,” I reached out a hand to touch his cheek but thought better of it when it was halfway up and yanked it down to my side. Why would I touch a stranger? “I just didn’t know… I’ve never met a werewolf…” He smiled. I thought my insides would melt. My God, how could he get even more handsome? My insides felt like they were glowing. “And you are a-?” he asked me again. I almost pushed back again before I felt the need to tell him. “I don’t know,” I said in a whisper. I guess it was his turn to look confused. “I, um, I’ve never met anyone… like me,” I told him. The phone in my pocket vibrated. I looked down as I took it out, Beth was calling me. I forgot about why I had come out here, and that she had b
CHAPTER TWELVE:~Drake: My fiery mate was basically charging at me across the bar and my heart thundered as I balanced what I was seeing with all kinds of dirty thoughts. I always thought I would be the dominant one in bed, but seeing her race toward me, with some anger in her gaze, I think I would love to see her take charge of me. She can boss me around any time, Dane said in my mind, making me grin. By the time my mate came up to me I was engulfed by her scent and it was raising my blood temperature. I was still grinning, which seemed to make her angrier. “Move out of my way,” she said between clenched teeth. I then registered I was blocking the side door. I looked at her confused, “Why?” She opened her mouth and closed it then said, “What do you mean, why? I need to go out there.” “I thought your friend needed you?” I asked her, my eyes darting to the woman talking to a vampire at the edge of the bar. “You know he’s not human right?” I watched her face as she heard what I
CHAPTER SEVENTY-ONE:~Avery: It really was another thing entirely to physically be here, to hear these things, and then to see them. After Drake destroyed this particular guard we wasted no time moving forward. I jumped off Dane’s back to free him up to get the bunker door down. It took three big hits from him but then it was cracked open. I went in first, the opening not quite big enough for him, and I heard him whine as I ran past. My shoes echoed on the cold hard floor as I walked forward. The hallway jutted to the right and revealed a staircase that went down a few floors. Just how many people did they have down here? With another loud boom I knew Dane had gotten the bunker door totally down, and I heard him chasing me as I went down the first few flights of stairs. There were no hallway offshoots until the third floor, and in my rage, with my light fired up and my hair completely lifted, I nearly slipped on the last step before finally seeing a doorway. I moved quickly with
CHAPTER SEVENTY:~Drake:‘I’m not staying here forever, they need to find or pick someone else,’ I grumbled to Dane - again. ‘We were born to lead,’ Dane fires back. It’s been our constant argument for the past week. Pretty much the only time we aren’t arguing is when Avery has our attention. We’re both one hundred percent focused on her when she’s around. Just then, like I’d been summoning her, a knock came to the door. I knew it was her before she opened it, and the instant her eyes met mine, everything else faded to gray. “I can feel you getting… upset?” she asked, closing the door behind her and walking over to the desk I’d been sitting in for too long. I stood up, needing contact with her right away. Without another word she was in my arms and everything seemed lighter, easier. “I’m perfect now, Freckles,” I said, a long breath leaving me. The encouraging tingles from everywhere we touched, accompanied by her intoxicating scent settled me down. Goddess, she’s amazing. The
CHAPTER SIXTY-NINE: ~Avery: It’s been a week since we stormed into Black Mountain. And while I wish things were relaxed, they’ve been just way too chaotic for much anything at all outside of putting this pack back together. We spent the first three nights at Alec’s with Drake needing to come back here for one thing or another, and since he didn’t want me out of his sight, I would tag along too. Not that I was just being pulled around all over to stand around and no nothing. No, it seemed I was stepping into Luna duties right alongside Drake. I spent my time meeting with this group and that, and have now started restructuring the school here. It seems like girls and boys were treated very differently in school and on the training fields, and while Drake has implemented changes for training, the school was overlooked. Not everyone is happy about these changes. There are a group of older pack members who grumble and fuss, and it’s hard not to just snap at them but I’m trying to em
CHAPTER SIXTY-EIGHT:~Drake: Something about the unknown intruder had Dane on edge. I asked him about it but all I got was a noncommittal grunt in return. Helpful. It was hard to leave Avery like that there but I shouldn’t be long and I didn’t know what exactly was out there waiting for me. I wish we were fully marked though, with Beatrix able to link with Archer, I really think that Avery and I would be able to link. I’d feel so much better if I were able to talk to her, knowing she’s okay. It took a couple of minutes but soon I saw two border guards up ahead. I recognized the three of them and they nodded at my approach. The vi
CHAPTER SIXTY-SEVEN:~Avery: God were we ready for this to be over. I saw that in Drake too when he assessed his previous Alpha. There was this huge weight, this expectation I think the group around us had, but no one said a word as Drake went straight for the kill and I had no problem sucking in this tyrant’s darkness. Unsurprisingly he was all dark. Just like Justin. That had been crazy too. I didn’t even know where to start with that, I wasn’t sure I could ever really process everything he ended up being. I just held onto Drake’s hand. It was the only thing I could think to do. We started our walk back while Beatrix, Emery and
CHAPTER SIXTY-SIX: ~Drake: I spent some time talking with Avery about what we’d seen. I knew I was adopted, and suspected I had Alpha blood, but to see all that… My parents sacrificed themselves for me and Rafael, Rafael was all behind it. He had killed my parents, my entire pack. And then he killed my adoptive parents, the sweetest, bravest people. I was going to slaughter him like a pig before he took anything else of mine. I didn’t understand what kind of deal he had made with the demons for that insane attack to have happened, but I didn’t care. And Eric, who had he been to my birth parents? Had I been stupid not to look for him earlier? Was it too late now? It was too late to keep in my head though, we were gathering for our strike. I would have to think all this through later. Now, I needed to put it aside. “Teams 1 - 4 are our frontline led by me,” Archer ordered out to the troops. There had been some arguing about this but we were going with what was planned. Ave
CHAPTER SIXTY-FIVE:~Avery: We were supposed to sleep in to help prep our bodies for what could be a long battle, and I really did not have a problem with that. I woke up once around early morning, feeling anxious, but Drake pulled me tighter into the hold he had me in and I found myself relaxing again. The second time I woke up it happened slowly. I rubbed sleep from my eyes and realized I was the little spoon to Drake’s big spoon. It made me smile. Something so simple like this, something I honestly thought I would never have. But here he was. His hold, his heat, his scent - it all gave him away so I didn’t even need to look. But how I wanted to.
CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR: ~Drake: It felt good to be heading home. Well. That and other things. It felt natural to be heading back towards where my pack was, but with everything there waiting for me, and the knowledge of my parents’ slaughter… well it was a lot. Avery insisted on taking a turn driving. She was currently scanning the radio for something, I wasn’t sure what. She’d passed by a couple songs that weren’t half bad. She listened for a few seconds before scrunching her nose in distaste and changing the station again. The windows on this old beater we bought from a junkyard couldn’t close up all the way on the driver’s side but instead of letting me cover the gap somehow she had insisted that the fresh air was good for us. So now her hair flowed a bit like she was using a little of her magic. Her hair had grown out a lot since before she’d been taken. As much as she looked beautiful when I met her, and each time she’d changed her look, I much preferred her natural strawberry-b
CHAPTER SIXTY-THREE: ~Avery: I thought for a moment before nodding, a silent ask for him to continue. I had to know everything. No more running from this life, from what we might have to face. I felt my whole body tense like I was preparing for some kind of assault. I tried to relax but knew I wouldn’t be able to until I finally heard this. No more secrets, no more ignoring what very well could be reality. “Okay - again - I don’t put too much stock into this,” he glanced at me again. I just nodded once more, still stiff. “Beatrix calls you Queen Mothe
