Chapter 1

-MILA-

"Milly! Is my lunch ready?" My boyfriend Lowell asked as he walked into the kitchen.

I jumped, rushing away from the documents I had been peeking at.

He would have a cow if he knew I was reading them.

"Here you go." I handed him his lunch.

He eyed the documents n the countertop, "Mila, were you reading those?"

"Maybe?"

He sighed, annoyed with me, "Baby, you know that's confidential."

He was right, I did know that. But I didn't care. I was tired of my boring life with Lowell and I wanted some excitement.

He was one of the best detectives in town and he was leading the investigation on a case of murders that had started happening a month ago.

He gave me a disapproving look before kissing the top of my head and walking out.

I sighed and leaned against the counter while looking around the kitchen.

Lowell was nice, but something was missing. Years ago when I still lived with my parents I had been annoyed when they pretty much sold me off to Lowell. But I knew they thought they were doing it for my own good. He came from a good family and looked after me well. The only catch was the fact that he happened to be a Lycan.

He spent months teaching me about lycanthropy and now, years later, I was convinced he must have known I wasn't his mate.

He told me at the beginning that lycans only had one mate, which meant that once he marked me as his, we would have to be together for the rest of our lives.

Yet, here we were, still together, but unmarked.

"Maybe I'm the problem," I spoke out loud.

Lowell always treated me well, and he made sure I would never want anything, whatever I could think of was provided to me.

I was treated like a queen, even his parents treated me well.

So why was I so unhappy?

My phone rang, pulling me from my thoughts.

I smiled as I answered, "Selena, what's up?"

"Meet up? I have loads to tell you about this new guy I met."

I smirked, of course, she did. Selena was always meeting a new guys, not that they ever lasted very long.

"I can meet you in about ten minutes?"

"Great, bookstore?"

"Sure." Selena worked at the bookstore in town.

I got my car keys and drove over to hear about her newest man.

Like me, Selena was a human, but she knew of Lycans and werewolves through our friendship. Although, these days most humans knew of them.

But it wasn't always like that.

"Mila!" Selena's voice pulled me from my thoughts as I entered the bookshop.

"Hey."

She clapped excitedly, "You're not going to believe this. I met this gorgeous guy, and I mean really gorgeous. He's over six feet tall, can you imagine!" she gushed, "Oh my God and his body is like a Greek god. But it's his eyes that really captivate you."

I smiled, "Gosh, you don't even give me a chance to sit down. But go on."

"Well, he's going to be at the party tomorrow night, I'm hoping to get further this time. Last night we just made out a little, he seemed to be in pain when we tried to go any further."

I frowned, "Pain? That's odd."

She nodded, "Right? Anyway, will you come to the party tomorrow? I don't want to be there alone if he doesn't show up."

"Selena, people are being killed. I don't think Lowell will be okay with me going to a party at night with that going on."

She pouted, "Please? You never go out with me anymore."

I sighed, "I know... Okay, you know what? Let's do it. I'll join you for a bit."

-LOBO-

Fucking scum, I thought as I walked passed a group of humans loitering outside the bar I was entering. I hated this bar, all the pathetic wannabe humans would hang around in the hopes of being like us.

But it was the only wolf-owned bar in this shitty town, which meant it was the only place a Lycan such as myself could get drunk.

And boy did I need a drink.

I hated having humans know about us. I preferred it when they cowered in fear, but these days a lot of them thought we were cool. I scoffed at the idea.

The books and movies were to blame for that with the bullshit they spewed.

That was another thing I hated.

Before I could continue with my anger, I took a seat at the bar and ordered a drink.

And as usual, a human woman smiled over at me.

This was nothing new, they seemed to be attracted to me, even before they realized what I was.

Not that I could blame them, I was very well aware of my good looks.

"Hey," The woman smiled at me, her dark raven hair hanging down over her back.

I nodded but didn't speak. The human girls were fun, there was no denying that, but since I arrived in town I was finding it difficult to do anything with any women, even if they threw themselves at me.

I knew what this meant, but I wasn't ready to admit it yet.

I closed my eyes, immediately getting a flash of her dark locks falling over her shoulders. I shook my head and opened my eyes again.

That woman was going to be the death of me, I was sure of it.

But no matter how much I tried to run from the truth, it always haunted me that she wasn't with me.

I lifted my phone, dialing the number I didn't want to call ever again.

"Lobo?" His voice sounded hesitant as if he wasn't sure it was really me.

"Yes, brother, it's been a while."

"It has. What do you need?"

"Can your older brother not simply call to check in?"

"Cut the crap, we both know you don't give a shit about me."

I hesitated before saying the next words, but I had to know, "I have received no ceremony invitation. Have you not marked her?"

"No. She isn't ready."

I smirked, he knew she wasn't his mate. But did he know she was mine?
