James was frustrated beyond reason. Just when everything seemed to be going smoothly, new wrenches were thrown into the works.

At least he and Elizabeth were bonded now. James spared a glance at the white wolf running to the left of him.

She would run there forever, now. Her place would forever be as the Luna.

She didn't have her memories of him back yet. James had hoped that the bonding would trigger something, but he hadn't hinged all of his hopes on that. He'd thought just being back in the cabin together might also do the trick, but it hadn't.

But James was not going to let anything upset this day.

He had bonded to his mate. He could feel her happiness seeping through the air to him. He could feel her position even if he closed his eyes, even if he lost all sense, he would know where she was.

There was nothing in the world that could separate them now.

He still wanted to try and return her memories. He didn't want her to feel something like love or longing for another wolf.

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 33: Home

{Flashback}Elizabeth packed the last of the things Phillip would need for the journey. She hoped he wouldn't need much more than this. He said his pack was a two day walk from here, that he would need another two days to sort everything out back home, and then he would send someone from there. He told her it would probably be one week before she heard anything. He had told her to go west and wait at the meeting spot there. He would send wolves to meet her there and bring her back to his pack. Everything made sense to her; she understood it absolutely. No wolf could just go to another's pack and be expected to be let past the guards. At best, the wolves on guard would give the intruder a swift death; at worst, they played cat and mouse for a while before killing them. No, Elizabeth understood entirely why she had to wait for an escort to come for her."I just don't understand why you can't come for me yourself," Elizabeth told him for about the thousandth time. "I would feel so m

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 34: Broken

James found Elizabeth in their shared rooms, and he started towards her."I'm so sorry," Elizabeth began, before James could even say anything. "I was so sure he would stand with you.""No," James shushed her. "Its okay, this is perfect, actually. This is the perfect solution to call everything off. This was such an important issue, and for Victor to make such a stance like this, to be in such opposition. To call for absolute war when I gave the solution to peace," James shook his head. "There is no way anyone would expect us to go through with it now. Even though the packs have voted for peace, he made his stance so clear, he was so against my position, absolutely no one would expect Katrina to marry me now.""What?" Elizabeth asked."In fact," James continued, "She might even be opposed to the marriage now herself. If she'd already been mated to me, that would have been disastrous enough, with terrible implications. But now, like this, with so many packs not even aware of our eng

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 35: Emissary

Elizabeth and James woke up the next morning with the rising sun, tangled together. The messenger would reach the pack in a few hours, if he hadn't already. So James decided they would wait in their room until he did.James had explained, in both his letters to Bass and Katrina, that one of the reasons he was calling the wedding off was that he had found his mate. That would be enough for Katrina to understand. In his letter to Bass, he had also explained that Elizabeth was the woman he had met years ago, though she still couldn't remember him.James had felt, for some strange reason, late last night that he should send a message to Kenneth, too. So he had gotten out of bed to dispatch another letter, Elizabeth sending one for Ayla as well. Now, they lay curled together, in the hazy aftermath of the bond being solidified.James wanted them to wait until he was sure the messenger arrived in the pack, so that they could walk in the council without any fear or retribution. Without ins

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 36: Alliance

{Flashback}"You cannot seriously make her the pack Luna," Bass asked, incredulous."Of course I'm going to make her Luna," James answered, laughing. "What else am I supposed to do, give up being the Alpha? Don't be silly, she's my mate, I'm Alpha, that's how this works.""A she-wolf you found rabid in the woods," Bass continued. "With no pack and no lineage to prove she's someone reliable or even safe, and you're just going to make her Luna? She brings no value to the pack and that would have been bad enough, but she might even be a possible threat and danger.""Bass," James said, his humor gone. "She isn't rabid.""You don't deny everything else?" Bass questioned."I don't," James allowed. "But she is my mate. Her life is tied to mine. If she harms me or the pack, she harms herself. I have thought this through, Bass. I'm not an idiot."There was enough of rebuke in there for Bass to swallow his tongue slightly."I meant no offence, Alpha," Bass spoke again. "I only feel you'r

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 37: Vengeance

The next morning, they were planning to leave the council grounds. The packs that had refused to agree to peace had to leave first. It was their law; it prevented those packs from remaining behind and planning any kind of surprise attack. So in the morning, the Protectors had led Victor and his pack first off the grounds. Then the rest had been followed a safe distance home. The Protectors accompanied these packs directly home, making sure they actually went home and not veered right off to have their own council elsewhere.None of the packs could help what happened after that, but the Protectors would be on high alert. After all, some wolves had made declarations for war.The two feuding wolf packs left second, as they needed to head home and prepare for visitors. They also couldn't be the last packs remaining, in case they decided to wage war right at the council grounds in an Alpha's fight. Then the packs that had chosen to abstain could leave, if they wanted to change their mi

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 38: Recollection

She held James close against her and raced him back to her room in their shared quarters. She made it all the way to the door, not meeting anyone, and rushed him inside. Her memory jolted again as she ran, and she stopped trying to fight it off, knowing her mind was trying to tell her something, she simply allowed it to grow in the back of her mind. Not paying it much attention, but not ignoring it or suppressing it any longer. She placed him in front of the fireplace, as something in her memory told her that she needed to keep him warm. She thought of leaving him alone in the cottage for a second, her mind almost demanding she leave the room to clean up something. But she actively fought it. James needed help immediately, absolutely nothing was more important than healing him right now.Whatever else her mind was trying to tell her to do, other than healing James, she was going to steadfastly ignore it entirely. There was no way she was leaving her mate, bleeding and possibly dyin

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 39: Explain

Elizabeth spent an hour sobbing into James. An hour where she refused to move. And James held her through all of it, allowing her tears to soak through her shirt. "I missed you so much," Elizabeth whispered to him eventually, after soaking his shoulder, her emotions overwhelming her."I missed you," Elizabeth murmured, and then a terrible realization dawned on her. "I'm so sorry," she pushed herself off his chest, speaking quickly. "I'm so sorry, I didn't wait, I. I didn't know it was you, and I kissed you, and I did so many things . . ."James quieted her with a slight kiss on her lips. "Shhh," he told her. "You fell in love with me twice over, I never felt hurt by it. I was always so happy when you kissed me. It made me so much more sure in our bond the first time, that you could fall in love with me again. I knew that you loved me, beyond anything else."Elizabeth pressed her lips against his again, softly, and then she pulled back."Why did you tell me your name was Phillip?"

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 40: Apologies

The ride home to the Moirai was filled with hope for their new life ahead of them. James and Elizabeth had spoken almost the entire way to the Moirai, what they planned on doing as their first official act as Alpha and Luna, names they had in mind for their kids.Elizabeth was dead set on Alexander, and James had begged to at least give his name as a middle name. And they'd bickered playfully all the way back to the Moirai.Kenneth met them at the border, Ayla and Kenai at his side. They could see Bass standing next to him, unmoving. Bass looked almost shocked at the sight before him. But both James and Elizabeth could understand. They had left looking very different to how they looked right now. And it had been almost a month and half since they'd left.No doubt Bass had also heard what happened in the Sycamore Pack, and about the attack on Elizabeth's life. The surprise on Bass' face didn't worry them for long, though. He quickly recovered and came towards them with a smile.Ke

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 50: Wedding Rites

A wolf's wedding was held beneath the full moon. It was a tradition, a hope they lived by, that as the moon protects them all, the moon would bless the couple on this evening. It was the day of her wedding, and Elizabeth was waiting in her room for the wolves to come and help her. Ayla would be part of her bridal party today, and Selene was coming from the Sycamore Pack.Besides those two, who Elizabeth had requested to be in attendance, there were many of other wolves who had offered to help her. But Elizabeth had been wary, after Katrina just yesterday, and had requested only those two wolves to come to her rooms. They would bathe her in hot water and oils, then they would apply salves to her skin so the moonlight would shine off of her.Right now, the wedding was being set up outside, and the path to the altar was being lined with the freshest and cleanest soil.James would walk, barefoot, to the altar down the aisle. Leaving footprints for her to follow. And then she would wal

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 49: A False Daughter

"Hello, Katrina," Elizabeth greeted, walking into the wolf's tent unannounced. She hadn't knocked or showed deference.Elizabeth was done playing games. It wasn't the Luna's tent, it wasn't even the tent of an honored guest. It was just a spare room they'd set up quickly for her to stay in.The ground looked muddy and wet."Luna," Katrina made the slight bow that was offered to the Luna's, and Elizabeth remembered her doing one for Katrina, something that felt almost a lifetime ago now.It also felt like a betrayal, to herself, to James, to their mate bond."You are a Luna too," Elizabeth began. "If I'm not mistaken, Luna Vanessa is your mother, and she was wise, she passed her gift to you, am I correct?"The Luna's gift passing to daughters was a strange way of inheritance. A Luna was only truly a Luna when she was mated to an Alpha, the same way an Alpha was only truly an Alpha when he had the loyalty of a pack that agreed to follow him.But some Lunas could pass their gift t

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 48: A New Beta

The fight was finally over. Elizabeth could hardly believe it. Everything was over, all the lies and deception, the loss and manipulation. There was finally peace in the Moirai.Or, as much peace as a wolf pack could have. Two weeks had already passed since Bass had been exiled, and for two weeks, they've been living without his shadow, or fear of him, covering them.Elizabeth still felt slightly uneasy, though. The moon had still been showing her troubling dreams, things she couldn't yet explain.A knock on her door brought her out of her thoughts."Luna," the wolf bowed before her, and Elizabeth had gotten used to the deference very quickly. Even she had to admit, royalty had its perks. "The Alpha is summoning you, in his hall.""He is, is he?" Elizabeth arched a brow. "Tell him I'll be right there."Elizabeth glanced to the wedding clothes and jewelry again. She would be barefoot for the ceremony, it was their law. But something about her things looked missing, and she couldn

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 47: Challenge

Bass immediately realized his mistake. But it was far too late to make any attempts at correcting it now.Not only had Bass robbed them of a mated Luna, but he'd also then put every barrier to her possibly being found, and in the same attempt, stopped their pack from having a Healer. All of these actions were not only betrayal against James, but the entire pack as a whole."What did you do, Bass?" James asked, spreading his arms wide before him, giving Bass a chance to explain."You were never supposed to be Alpha," Bass hissed. "It was never supposed to be you. I was going to be Alpha!" Bass screamed, and every wolf took a few steps back. This wasn't an outright challenge for Alpha just yet, but it was getting there pretty fast.Elizabeth stayed firm in her place just behind James; she would move when it was an open declaration and not before.Kenneth stood firm next to her."So tell me," James spoke softly, encouraging. "Tell me what was supposed to happen."And Elizabeth un

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 46: Revelation

Elizabeth and James were preparing to return to the pack, but there was nothing else that they could do. Not really. More lives depended on them than just their own.Elizabeth packed up everything she would need. This would be well and truly her last time packing up and leaving here. It felt a little strange, though she'd done it so many times before already."Are you ready to leave?" James asked her.And she wasn't sure what she wanted to do, but she did know what she had to."I think so," Elizabeth answered, tying her last bag closed and passing it to James. They left for the Moirai together. This time, there would be no guards sent to bring Elizabeth home. This time James wouldn't leave her side even for a moment. Not while the threat to them, their pack and their mate bond, was still out there. While the threat still thought that they weren't yet uncovered. And James, much like the first time, well and truly didn't know what he was returning to. He had no idea the state that

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 45: Plans

"But why?" Elizabeth cried. "Why is he so invested in your choice of Luna?"James considered for a moment, before speaking."The Luna has more influence in a pack than any Alpha would care to admit," James began. "The Alpha is obeyed, always, but very often he is also feared. But the Luna is obeyed, always, and she is loved. And when obedience comes from love, rather than fear, the obedience is ingrained and the loyalty unshakeable.""And if Bass had the ear of the Luna," Elizabeth reasoned."He would have the sway over the pack," James shook his head. "It's just so unlike him, though. Bass is violent, he fights head on, and he fights recklessly. It isn't like him to be so underhanded and deviant.""Poor Katrina," Elizabeth began. "She was going to be used like a puppet. I'm glad she managed to escape.""Yeah," James nodded. "It wouldn't have been easy for her to be in that situation. Bass would have manipulated her to gain control over the pack.""Do you think his goal was to b

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 44: Remembrances

Elizabeth knew that something was very wrong, and she knew that something was wrong with her. This closeness to James that she felt was unnatural, wrong and definitely a once in a lifetime kind of thing. But there was no crushing desire with it, no all-consuming madness of a mate haze. And she knew what it could mean, but it would mean something very strange. She knew him, before. Somehow, somewhere, they'd met before. Because she was absolutely sure that what she felt for him was a mate bond solidified. But that just couldn't be possible because she absolutely didn't know him.But that could mean that something was wrong with her.Elizabeth watched as James tended to the fire, as he helped her clean the cabin, as he roasted meat for their supper. And each time he did something, something she had never seen him do before, her memory flashed. Like it was trying to remind her of something.James dusted out the blankets on her bed, folding them up, and she pictured him sleeping in

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 43: Intuition

James had a plan. A very solid and very crazy plan. But Elizabeth was his mate. If there was ever a time or place where his plan could work, it was here, with her. His plan meant never going back to his pack, of course, but that was a simple fix to the problem.James had left Bass in charge of the Pack, under Kenneth's watch. James had felt sure that Bass wouldn't do anything like he had done before. Bass himself had seen the repercussions of his actions, and would do everything to prevent that same situation from happening again. After Bass' short control of the pack, James had spent two weeks undoing the damage that had been caused by his misguided actions. The pack had to go on food rations and restrictions, in order to refill their winter stores. It hadn't been easy, as hunger ricocheted through the pack, and the wolves had weakened. They had also been miserable and had almost unanimously agreed that the situation was entirely Bass' fault.James had also sent away provisions

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 42: Home

Elizabeth woke up in her little cottage, the sun streaming in through her bedroom window. She had woken up every morning for a month now already, relishing the peace the morning here gave her. She'd been home for about a month now. She'd been living in the Moirai, working as their healer, when one night a stranger had come into her room, running straight for her, grabbing her.Elizabeth had screamed and tried fighting him off. He was very obviously stronger, and had the upper hand, until the guard wolves heard the commotion and came to intervene. The wolf had left peacefully after that, the guards following him out.The training healer had come to check in on her, and then helped her to her own rooms. But Elizabeth had decided that night, she couldn't stay in the Moirai. She absolutely had to leave for her home, and she'd set out as soon as she had the Alpha's permission, which was brought to her by the healer in training, who introduced herself as Ayla.Ayla had suggested to Eliz
