CHAPTER 1

NEW YORK 2018

~SERENE~

I stared down the window, lost in my thoughts. Why was life so unfair to me? I thought the hardest thing for a woman was to make their in-laws love them, which is why I grew up making sure they loved me, and they did, as they even made sure I married him. Yes, I was married to the love of my life, Diego. From the moment I set my eyes on him, I knew he was the one for me. I was fortunate as his family was good friends with my father, and since my father died saving him, they swore to make sure he married me.

I was happy when he finally proposed. I can still remember that day, like yesterday. He was not happy. He told me he was doing it for his family, but did I care? No, because I knew I would win his heart, and no, I was not giving up. I am going to win his heart.

I subconsciously stopped myself as I raised my hand almost sipping on the wine then I remembered I was not pregnant, I just lost our baby a few weeks ago so I brought the glass to my mouth, sipped on it to the bottom, “Ah,” I let out a satisfactory sound and then I stood to my feet and looked down, I hoped to see my husband, it was mid-afternoon I knew him coming this time was a miracle but today was our anniversary, I hoped he would come early to spend it with me but still I couldn't blame him, seeing that his favorite car was not there I sighed then walked to the table, I placed the glass on the counter and walked toward the door but quickly turned, no, today had to be perfect so I walked back and took the glass and bottle of wine from the table, he loved champagne, not wine.

“Mrs. Myers, do you need anything?” Nora, my house help quickly ran to me and took the bottle and glass from my hands.

“Yes, did my husband call?” I asked, and she shook her head. I've been asking her since I woke up, even though he hasn't slept in our bed, which I understood as he was still mourning over the miscarriage. He was very happy when I told him I was pregnant—his treatment even changed, but the moment he found out I lost it, he got so angry that he stayed a week without talking to me. I had to beg and plead for his forgiveness even when it was his fault that I lost it. “Okay,” I cleared my throat. “Please take a bottle of champagne and two glasses upstairs,” I instructed her, and she nodded. But as she turned to leave, I stopped her and asked her about the roses. I had ordered them specifically for this night. If a baby was going to change his mind, then there was no time to waste as I wanted to make him happy, so I would do anything to fall pregnant again, and it just so happened that today was our anniversary.

"Yes, Mrs. Myers, the roses arrived a few minutes ago.”

"Alright, take them up,” I told her, and she nodded before she walked toward the kitchen.

My eyes wandered to the clock; there were only two hours left before he got back. I knew it was a lot of time, but my husband liked perfection; a little mistake can turn him off, so I quickly ran up the stairs and got in the shower.

I started by shaving my legs; he never really cared about that; he loved me just the way I was, but after losing the baby, I knew it would be difficult to get him to touch me again; I had to be irresistible. After shaving and putting myself together, I walked to the mirror and curled my hair. He liked my hair down, so I curled it and let it hang on my shoulders. I wore lingerie and a tempting nightgown.

When I was sure that my look was perfect, I ran to the bedside table and checked on my phone for time. I only had ten minutes. “Okay, everything is perfect.” I took a deep breath, then walked to the table and fixed the bottle of champagne and the glasses—as I mentioned, my Diego was a perfectionist, so he paid attention to everything; even the glasses position could turn him on. Well, good thing I learned all this before our marriage.

“Good, now breathe, you got this,” I told myself and then sat on the bed. I didn't know if he was starting with the food in the dining room or coming straight to the bedroom; either way, I had to be ready, so I tried my angles on the bed. I had to sit at a spot where he could see the sexy me.

I spent the rest of the ten minutes finding the right pose, so when my alarm rang, which meant it was time for him to come home, I stood up and turned it off. I walked down and met Nora. I knew it was time for her to go, so after she bid goodbye, I let her go.

“The food is in the microwave; you can just heat it once Mr. Myers returns,” she said before she left.

****

It had been hours, and Diego was not yet back. I was sitting in the dining room waiting, and I wondered where he was. It was already going to eight; calling him would cause problems as he would call me clingy, so I dialed his PA’s number instead.

“Mrs. Myers,” she picked on the first ring.

“Sorry for bothering you this late; is my husband still at the office?” I asked.

"No, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Myers didn't come to the office today; he told me he was taking a day off,” she explained, I regretted bothering her, so I thanked her and ended the call. If he didn't go to the office, then where was he? I stood up and paced around, then a beep caught my attention; it was a tag from social media.

I wondered who had tagged me as curiosity got the better of me. I went to the tag, and my heart skipped a beat as I saw the video. My husband was checking into a hotel with a woman beside him; his hands were around her waist, and even a child could tell what was happening. I paused the video and zoomed in on the woman’s back, and it was her, his ex-girlfriend, Nelly, the woman I'd been asking him to stop seeing. I couldn't control my thoughts as they went back to the rumors that he was still seeing his ex.

I trusted him like he asked me but seeing this video confused my senses. Was this perhaps true? Was he cheating on me?

CHAPTER 7Serene I have not heard from Diego in two weeks. I have been doing everything I can to recover, and now it is time for me to go to a faraway land, away from Diego and all the suffering he has caused me. It is now time to start afresh, this time without making any compromises for anyone. Charlotte and Neina are welcome to visit me in London at any moment. I can not understand why they are so unhappy. Charlotte and Neina placed my things in the boot and moved towards me; we hugged before jumping into the car and driving to the airport."Do not forget to inform us when you land," Neina said lovingly.“I won't promise,” I responded with a smile at them."If you forget, we will catch the next flight there," Charlotte said, and we all laughed. The vehicle came to a stop, and we hopped out. I grabbed my luggage and we headed inside the airport, and I started to feel sad and melancholy. I paused and glanced at both of them; Charlotte saw and hurriedly muttered, "Serene, calm down."

CHAPTER 8 Serene My skirt feels so snug on my body, and I have not worn something so classy in a long time. Throughout my marriage, I always wore clothing that never revealed too much of my body—except for instances where I needed to appear gorgeous. It is my first day at work, and I have donned make-up from Rare Beauty. Selena Gomez's cosmetics are an excellent fit for my skin. I put on lipstick and curled my hair. I had no option but to wear heels; I only hoped I wouldn't walk and fall because I have not worn heels in a long time; else, I will spend time in my slippers. I hurriedly grabbed my purse and dashed out as the driver came. "Good morning, Ms. Brights. I hope you are looking forward to your first day of work," The driver said to me. "Sure, I can not wait either," I said, turning my attention to my phone. Charlotte and Neina continued sending me texts asking if I had arrived at work; I responded and then began gazing at the architecture and charming spots we drove past.

She smiled at me and approached me with an enticing look. I stood up and headed towards her; when we met, I grabbed her up and kissed her. We proceeded to our bed, carrying her in my arms, and gingerly laid her on the plus-sized bed."Hold on," she whispered before I had the opportunity to kiss her.She grinned and picked up her phone. I was curious as to why she had stopped me, so she scanned through her album and finally stopped at a shot. I could not believe my eyes when I viewed the picture."What? You still have that ?" I wondered when he was going to depart for the meeting since I had a plan to find out what he was keeping from me, but my main concern was destroying whatever surprise he might be preparing. "Honey, shall we send Mia to spend time with her family?" I asked him since Miguel had gone to the Bahamas with Charlotte and Andrew."Yes, I am here to take care of you. Therefore, I believe it is a fantastic idea," he agreed.I already had enough maids, and Mia was exhausted from all the hassle Miguel had caused her. So I got up and went upstairs to see if she was there, only to see her departing Miguel's room."Hey, I need to talk to you," I started, and I could see she knew exactly what I wanted to say."Madam, please, I want to stay and t

CHAPTER 171Serene When George called to inform me about Sofia, I was still eating dinner together with Miguel and Charlotte. Sofia appeared to have forgotten that I was the reason she eventually gained some attention and a few gigs that aided her financially, so I simply had to go get her. Not to mention the money I paid her when she lied to me about being pregnant with Diego. Instead of attempting to outbid me for Diego, she should just be appreciative and back off. When I arrived at the casino, the bartender informed me that Sofia and Diego were in some room. I was first full of hostility, but as we approached the door, I heard Diego pleading with her to stop, but she persisted, so I entered.Diego was overcome with terror, but it did not matter since I had to deliver Sofia a nuclear slap, and I succeeded. The fact that she wanted to smack me back was unbelievable to me. I mean, who does that? She would require critical treatment if one of my guards touched her, judging by the way

I stopped Sofia's attempt to smack Serene by holding her hand.“Don't even think about it," I warned.I hoped she had remained silent, but she added, "Let go of me, just watch what will happen when Max finds out about this.""What did you just say?" Serene asked, walking closer to Sofia."Max is coming for the two of you, so your fiancé will regret having you smack me," Sofia remarked.Damn, couldn't she just keep quiet? After saying hello to Charlotte, I left and headed to a casino to see George, who could have some ideas. "I get you, but the babies will suffer if you tell her the truth. What happens if she does not respond coolly?" he asked."That is exactly what I am thinking; I am afraid I could lose her again. Perhaps I should quickly get married," I proposed." Yes, but you are aware of the pain of being kept in the dark. Serene is severe and dangerous. Believe me, she will not spare you if you do anything weird with her sentiments," George cautioned."When will you get serious and quiet sounding so negative?" I could tell that the maids wanted me to sit but I always prefer making my fiancé and son the dishes. I was still cooking when a message came onto my phone; I at first ignored it, thinking it was just emails from my clients, but later got a shock. I walked into Miguel's room with a tray of food and placed it on the table before taking a seat to feed him. “Mommy, where's Daddy?" Miguel asked."He is at the office. Do you want me to give him a call?" I said promptly, grinning.“No, I just wanted to tell him to go to work. I'll be OK. I thought you said I'm strong right?" he asked."Of course, baby, you are my Roman Reigns," I informed him, smiling confidently. After eating, Miguel went to the toilet, and I quickly got my phone to see what was in my emails when I could not believe what the folks in that video were saying.

When I entered the bedroom, I noticed Diego standing near the table, appearing uncomfortable. "Honey, is everyone OK?"
