Shadows in the Basement.

Skylar sat on the cold, hard floor of the basement, her hands resting gently on her rapidly growing belly. The dim light that filtered through the small window at the top corner of the room provided her only sense of time. ‘It must be morning.’ she thought, as the pale light turned from grey to a slightly warmer hue.

Every day spent in this place, felt like an eternity. The basement, had become a place of dread and fear, had become her prison. She tried her hardest to hide her pregnancy from Jason, but it was getting more difficult with each passing day. The nausea, the cravings, the obvious swelling of her belly—everything was becoming too apparent. Maybe it was because she was loosing weight. She feared what Jason might do if he found out about her baby.

Skylar had noticed a disturbing trend: Jason had reduced the amount of food he brought her. He used to bring her meals thrice a day, but now it was twice, and even then, the portions were smaller. She couldn’t shake off the suspi
