Kreg is a terrible place to live at.
I mean, for anyone who is not of noble blood.
Misery, high taxes, and no protection. All the people can do is suffer in silence.
Now I can feel it in my flesh and blood.
I finally understand why we are here, just spreading false news of hope.
I also want dome hope.
The hope of a warm meal and a soft bed.
Hope that mister Bunny gets a bath and stops stinking.
But now I am here.
In a filthy and dirty carriage.
Travelling through the fields and offering money to anyone willing to pay a small “favour” in the future.
The nobles don't seem to be concerned about the news from the fields. Well, they never do. We were not interrupted or questioned.
Yesterday I saw some changes. Now the mood of the citizens is much better when we arrived in their fields, the food is also better.
Even with some suspicion, they seem very excited about this "hope" thing. Are we that convincing? That it pleased them just thinking that it could be true?
Today we started to collect the “favours”.
We go from merchants to farmers and ask them to lower the price of their products by 20 percent. ( I should really study more maths to know what it means).
Rômulo said:
This is a strategy devised specially for periphery residents, which shows its results after just a short time.
Then he said something about reduced prices, increased purchasing power, selling more, and blah blah blah of politics that I didn't understand. What I understood was that they would need to produce more, and for that, they need more workers. Because they have now more money than before, they can pay people better, and then it becomes kind of a circle of producing and consuming.
This is not an as easy feat to achieve, as it looks. Especially if you were used to luxurious life and were suddenly taken out of it.
It is my money that is being given free to every poor person we meet along the way!
It's my entire inheritance!
Really loots and lots of money!
I am seriously trying to forget it and at least enjoy my only two hours of rest for the day.
For the past 6 months, this carriage is the only place I have had to sleep, eat, and take shelter from the sun. Being carried from village to village, proclaiming the same speech over and over, and signing contracts whose terms I do not know. The worst of it was doing it in the light of day! In other words, playing a puppet of a certain someone.
One of my worst nightmares. But it is worth the price. After all this, I have more chances of living in peace for the rest of my life.
If the working conditions were better, I would even be enjoying the ride.
But due to all the “investment”, our funds are extremely limited.
That is just one cold meal a day, 4 hours of sleep (in a carriage that rocks more than a boat), deplorable hygiene conditions, and long, cold and frightening nights. The only thing that keeps ms warm beside my clothes is mister bunny's fur, that is when I am not using him as a pillow.
I throw my body over the free seats and get a hug mister Bunny.
I let myself get lost in the fluffiness of his white fur.
My thoughts start to blur.
I felt myself falling into nothingness, I couldn't see or hear, but I still felt my body, somehow smaller than usual, moving in a single direction, which would probably be the ground.
I relaxed and waited for the impact, with no more choice.
There was no impact, I felt my body touching the ground, but there was no pain.
I still couldn't move.
But now I could hear.
Someone else fell with me, I heard the sound of a second impact, but just like mine was muffled like a slight fall from a small body.
Someone picks me and my buddy.
It is cold. He is cold too.
I wish I know where we are going.
A female voice comes close to my body, muttering incomprehensible verses.
I am wrapped in cotton cloths and carried in an indistinct direction.
I am placed in a warm room and away from the wind.
I stay there, like a rag doll, I can't tell how much time has passed.
The voices around me rise suddenly, now I can recognize some phrases.
— Now we will proceed … to the next … of the annual council … Distribution of identified orphans … first name … brown hair and eyes … fire accident … next name … William Gords … lost his parents in …
The speech continued with a pattern of the name of orphans followed by their appearance and the death of their parents.
This was probably a legalized children's auction, and my turn came soon.
As if I had anticipated correctly, I'm being carried again, this time to a lighted environment.
Now I can hear the whispers of the audience and the narrator's voice more clearly.
— next orphan has an unknown name and origin, red eyes, and white hair.
The voices rise and begin to merge before the speaker can calm them down. I was about to hear the response of one of my buyers when some evil heartless person opens the carriage door, leaving the wintry wind and moonlight to blind my eyes. Oh, yes. Back to the old reality
Great. My sleep was blown by the wind and all that was left is a matter of my being, stunned and exhausted.
I finally identify my bloodthirsty target.
No less and no more than my soulless teacher.
I took advantage of the fact that my eyes were red with sleep and I made the angriest face I could.
He's already immunized because his only reaction is to silently make a face from who is not to blame and extend his hand so that I could go down the carriage.
As I didn't have much to choose from, I get mister bunny in my bag and accept the help.
But I'm still pissed.
Today's meeting was with a fruit merchant named Halk.
Our goal was to make fruit no longer a luxurious meal, but something that was at least a bit more available to the people.
Which, honestly, should be normal. I want fruit. I am hungry. And exhausted. I think I want to sleep more than eat.
The normally busy streets were quiet. The morning dew cleared the air and spread the scent of wildflowers. The sun would only reach the city in a few hours, for the time being, it was cold and dark making the faint moonlight that bathed the city make it shine.
I slip my hand into my bag and start to pet mister bunny.
I felt my eyes trying to close with every step I take.
If I do not concentrate, I will certainly fall asleep.
We walk, and walk, and then walk some more.
I ask Rômulo how long we have been walking.
He says it has just been 15 minutes. But that is not just 15 minutes, that were whole longs 15 minutes walking!
I was already huddled in the environment, about to leave this world.
When Rômulo broke all the silence, taking the mood away.
— Looks like we got here early.
Seriously, doesn't he know how precious every minute of sleeping is?
Already awake, I took a closer look at my surroundings. It was the same as if the entire village was made of the same mould from the tip to the centre.
The only noticeable difference was that we were in a square, in front of a small fountain.
Because of the darkness, it was difficult to notice more details, but if you paid attention. You would hear one or another mouse running around the corner and the creaking of poorly closed windows.
My sleep is coming back.
I close my eyes and take advantage of the scenery to relax.
Naturally, I was the only one enjoying the moment.
Rômulo was so alert that if one didn't know him well, it might think he was afraid of the dark.
To see a man with great titles and a high reputation so alert with a simple dark alley was strange but pleasant.
Until I saw the shape of Rômulo's concern, a man hooded in the shadows of a house.
And that was not the biggest problem.
There were 6 more men scattered around the houses that surrounded us, it was an ambush.
Again, what in heaven did I ever do to get in these situations?
Rômulo didn't seem to notice them, he was still concentrated only on one shadow.
If I didn't warn him, we would be in danger.
That could be fun …
I looked directly at the nearest hooded man and gave the most sincere smile I've ever done while I said in an amused, loud tone.
— What a nice reception we have here! I wish I had some snacks to enjoy the fight.
Thereafter, things happened extremely fast, so fast that I could only enjoy a few scenes.
The first was Rômulo's already cautious face, turning into a frightening face when he noticed the situation.
That deserved a frame.
The second was our attackers despairing at being discovered. Unfortunately, it was too dark to see their faces.
The third and most spectacular was when all the men came out of hiding and charged at Rômulo. Well, I suppose that picking up the adult first and dealing with Children later is a normal reaction.
The next scenes were too fast for me to follow in the dark.
Rômulo closed the guard and from my point of view, it seemed that every time an attacker touched him, was thrown back two meters or knocked out.
It was an extremely fast 'show', in a few minutes all the men besides Rômulo were on the floor. Rômulo was standing there in the centre, still on guard as if the fight had never started. Only some seconds later, he relaxes and began to mumble under his breath.
I was still enjoying the scene when I realized that Rômulo's bad mood and his grumblings were directed at me.
— You little … Damn kid … without even a warning …
Well, that seemed to have worn him out more than expected. I guess it's best to lighten the mood …
I try to make a face of admiration and give him some praise.
— As expected of a citizen of Castela. Even a scholar is stronger than a Kreg mercenary. — I scanned the men on the floor, everyone had easily recognizable faces coming from mercenary signs. But none was our guest. — But it seems our presence was not very welcome. Or is it that only the merchants from the south are very petty? — I said in a loud voice while watching my surroundings closely.
As expected, a dark shape trembled in a distant shadow as soon as I finished my speech.
I straightened up and walked without any striking expression toward the figure.
— But I don't think that was your intention, am I wrong, Mr. Halk? — I say in an exaggerated respectful tone just to toy with him.
— Your Highness, you better stay behind me. — Rômulo said with a serious face putting his arm in front of me to prevent me from passing.
— Please, this is not a gamble. — I said a little annoyed that he was playing the bodyguard just now. I tried to dodge his arm, but he held me back, annoying.
— Are you sure? — Sometimes he is so serious that I can't help but smile, thankfully it's dark.
The worried face was good, but we had more important things to do.
— See that shadow there? It trembles every time I say the words that petty, tight-fisted, or penny-pinching. — The shadow slightly trembles again.
— See? That can only be a merchant from the south! They are too greedy to be able to fight for themselves, so they tell other people to do it. Now excuse me… — I answered.
Rômulo didn't seem to understand my line of reasoning, but the message was passed, and he finally released me from his grip. And there goes the grimace of the day. Maybe I'll make him repeat the dose tomorrow.
I returned my gaze to the merchant. While we were talking, he had stepped out of the shadows and was now standing just a few feet apart from us.
He was a guy with a rich face, well-groomed skin, a well-trimmed medium beard, and a protruding belly. In short, a typical generic trader.
He looked annoyed.
I presume it was because I called him penny-pinching.
In any case, it was now that the real struggle begins.
— I'm sorry for the inconvenience, Mr. Halk, can we continue where we left off? — I gently ask the old man.
— I don't remember starting a conversation with a child who carries a bunny plushy around. — Said Halk arrogantly while looking at me from above.
Probably to hide that he had soiled his pants when he saw Rômulo.
Unfortunately for him, I am too tired to handle this type of game.
— Well, you must remember that you received a letter that explicitly stated the terms of our agreement. If I may, we don't have time to discuss anything. Or you accept the terms, or you do not. If you accept, we will take care of the payment immediately. If you disagree with any of the terms, we will give you a small amount for your silence, and leave this square as if nothing had ever happened. If you decide to cheat on us, this big guy here will chase you for the rest of your life. Explicit enough? — When I finally breathe again I finished speaking, I see that my little speech had been productive.
Mr. Halk's face contorted in a mixture of disbelief and respect.
It was funnier when I still had more of my baby face.
Sometimes, even I forget that I turned six. Every day seems to last a lifetime!
He is thoughtful for a long time before finally declaring his decision.
— I understand, and I will accept the proposal with gratitude. —
Finally, this was one of the easiest guys so far, I think this is related to Rômulo's small performance.
One more reason to do this more often
— So since you don't think I'm qualified for the final processes, I'll let my companion Rômulo take care of the remaining bureaucratic parts. Mr Bunny and I will be waiting in the carriage. — And with this good excuse, I elegantly dragged my exhausted body and soul to the carriage. The last thing I remember was throwing myself over the cushioned seats in the carriage.
Well, what do I think about the future?
My opinion is that if I have to do this for another 6 months, I will be able to attend my coronation when this revolution is over.
I'm forgetting to tell you something … Oh, yeah! What was the agreement between me and Rômulo, and what is my goal here? Wants to know? I will tell you in the next chapter. Need a good night of sleep first.
One year later... I know, I know. Do you want to know what's going on with those other two characters in Castella? Unfortunately, I am the main character and I do not know what they are doing. You are not even interested in the fact that the war finally broke out, right? I feel betrayed by you. Curious about my contract? Well, now I will tell you only at the end of this chapter! And ... I'm bored by being stuck in that carriage all day. I look at Rômulo sitting across from me. To no one's surprise, he is sleeping like a baby, even though this carriage bounces and jumps like a mule on these mud roads. I take one of my books and throw it on his lap. He jumps in fright and hits his head on the ceiling before exclaiming an angry swear. — Oh, by the gods, Alamex. What do you want? — It's worth it. His face, that's the entertainment I wanted, but I won't say that. —Then I am not your highness anymore? — I ask, trying to use my child's face to my advantage. He looks at me, unmotivated
"A merchant's son going to the battlefield. It is the beginning of the end." It was the first thing I thought of when I got into the carriage. It was not as dirty and badly treated as I had imagined it would be. The coachman was an old man of few words. The seats were wooden, hard, and cold. It was early autumn, and the garden at the entrance to the fortress was more colorful than in the spring. The cold breeze passed completely through my thin clothes. I close the window. I watch through the glass, the place that I called home for two years, slowly disappear from my sight. I don't remember how long the trip took. I was too tired. At about noon, two other boys climb into the carriage. I remember meeting both. They were probably part of the mandatory training with the old general. However, I never talked to anyone but Prince during practice. They were my age, or at least they seemed to be. One was tall and dark, with black hair and honey-colored eyes. The second was similar to th
Our outpost was on the west side of Castela. Vani was not pleased with this at all, as Kreg was attacking the east side. Honestly, I was very relieved that I would not have to fight so soon. Vani and the Tado brothers have had military exercise classes since they could hold a sword, but I only had two disastrous years of combat class! When we finally arrived it was already night, the first thing I noticed when leaving the carriage was the smell. Vegetable and lamb soup made on the fire. I hadn't eaten since morning and that smell was killing me. We were taken to what looked like a small town made of red and white huts. Men were running everywhere, forges were lit and armors were being polished. It seemed that all men had something to do. We were taken to a kind of improvised courtyard with benches made of logs and dirt. Finally, served with a bowl each of concentrated soup and a piece of meat on top. We had to use our hands(we were forced to wash them) to eat because the spoon hadn't
Sun on my face. I am awake! I get up, splash water on my face, and change myself. I leave my room in a jump. I find maids running everywhere. A soldier carrying wood bumps into me. —Sorry your Highness! —He shouts and continues on his way without looking back. Even though everything seems squeezed, I miss many well-known faces. People are more spread out because of the war, busier. I also make my way through the full corridors, being small has its advantages. I start running by the blacksmithing. It was five-thirty in the morning and the place was already boiling. All five furnaces (that looked more like the volcanoes in the illustrated books) were lit and dozens of blacksmiths raised and lowered their hammers. Pang, Pong Pum. Horrible noise. Even worse is the smell of smoke, coal, metal, and other burning things. (That I don't want to know what it is) Gray-haired blacksmith looks at me and says, —Hey boy! We need more copper here! —Other Blacksmiths start to notice
I've been riding for two days straight. I am not able to narrate with mere words The feeling of being in my place. It is agonizing. Every second that passes I am forced to use forces that I was not even aware of. But I need to continue. Not because it is an order from the king or because it is my duty. But why in my hands do I have a seed, small and delicate. Which can be a big and beautiful tree that will guide us all! I have the hope and the future in my hands and I cannot let it die. I can feel the suffering of my faithful companion. His trotting has been going slower, and I can feel his breathing faster and faster. He can't take much more, even though I sacrificed half of my supplies just for him. The little madam in my lap no longer laments his swing, and that only worries me more. I am far from being an example of a good mother. For the last time, I swear, I lightly press my partner's belly, we must be faster. Even tired, more exhausted than I would ever dream to be, he hears m
Why do I have so few chapters for myself if I am the main caracter? How is a war, full of blood and politics more interesting than me? Ok, I did not do anything really important, and I admit that I enjoyed the months of peace. Being able to sleep knowing that I am not being observed by ghosts is better than holidays. But the war is over, and it's time to collect the rewards. Attention is now very welcome. Appreciate the masterpiece of my effort! First something more significant. To discover where the hell am I. And where the hell did they take Mr Bunny to. The only thing I know is that it is dark, very dark. Four days ago, I'm sure I was in the real winter cabin with Rômulo. Castela had managed to fully penetrate Kreg's territory. They captured all the influential nobles in the region, that includes me. The rest of the days consisted of being imprisoned in the roughest, coldest, trembling, and dirty carriage I have ever been in! At least we were allowed three hot meals a
Welcome back, my invisible thoughts. If we go on to continue the story from where we stopped the summary need to be quick. I have a lot to tell you. Most importantly, I got mister bunny back. After an exhausting speech, I was finally released. From prisoner to guest, now I could finally wander freely. I was bathed by the maids in rot water and dressed in clean clothes. A white pyjama nightgown. Finally, in the place, I should have been from the beginning. Resting and enjoying my newest room as an honored guest. On a soft cotton bed … red like everything around me. My body is finally light, warm, and most importantly, finally clean! Sincerely, think about it. A mere child spends all his fortune travelling for two years without any comfort in poor lands. Just to save the enemy country because he knows it is the right to do. Does He receive a medal? No. He is locked up like a criminal and interrogated before the king himself! Well, at least I had my consultation with the king an
Warm light warms my skin. It's already day! I open my eyes, take a deep breath of the cold morning air. And I'm awake! I jump out of bed and stretch as far as I can. The birds are singing, the sun is rising, and the whole day seems to be smiling! Turn to my bench, a bowl of freshwater rests in it. I observe my reflection, how happy I look today! Can't stop smiling! Wash my face. How cold is the water! For sure, I am well awake now. Turn to my wardrobe, start to dress myself up. I need to button the buttons right! Tie the knot in the best possible way. And still, need to be careful not to wear anything inside out! Why are clothes so complicated? Tock tock I hear from the door. —Come in! — I answer right away. —How excited your highness is this morning! —The familiar voice exclaims. —Moli! Help me out! I am stuck!— I give up trying to stick my head in the jacket. —Well, it is already a breakthrough!— She says pulling me out of the jacket. I can see again! —Are you looking
To your dearest Majesty,As your majesty favoured my last report I choose to start to report regularly in diary form.I apologize for missing the little prince hunt ceremony, I know how important of an event it was for your majesty. But the crowds would not do Harika any good in her actual state of health.I wish you majesty good luck with the international affairs.I assure your majesty that the princess will be in a safe place when the day comes.Castela is a country of warriors that will always resurge if one of them is left standing. My sincere regards,Ronald,Son of the first general of Castella,13° knight of the royal guard.27th MarchFrom now on, my training is over, and I shall be with the princess in integral time.I don't judge 4 days of training as enough, but I trust Melinda's judgment. If she thinks I am ready, then I will do my best from now on.It isn't as if I were completely alone, but please understand that the pressure is much bigger.Even though the responsibili
That nice Soldier let me off his shoulders once we approached the plaza and I pridefully started to pull my card with that gigantic board on top.As expected, I was welcome with people applauding and calling my name.I'm starting to think this was worth it.Game and food stalls had sprung up in every corner of the plaza, and Castella flags hung all over the walls of the houses. The king himself was amid the public. With a crying prince in his Majesty's arms?Don't tell me he didn't manage it?It was so easy! For a beast, like himself, that should have been a piece of cake.More glory for me, I guess. His Majesty lets the crybaby in ah maid's arm and comes in my direction. He looks at my boar, who still has the big nail on his neck.-Well done boy, you completed the first step on the path to becoming a man.- He says patting my back. This man is much bigger from close…Wait.-First step?-
Those days had been very busy, but also very nice days.Busy means less study and more time out.I was helping the merchants move their heavy loads in the central plaza when father came out of the nothing.Everyone was startled, giving awkward greetings and clearing the way.Father does not usually leave the palace. The merchants released me from the ropes and said I could go meet him.I thanked them and ran to my father. He picks me up and lifted me in his arms.He talked about how I was already a big boy and those things. Then suddenly, he spoke about us having a last festival together. Those days, he has been somewhat strange.Always tired, and with that strange look in his eyes, as if he was seeing everything for the last time.I asked what of a festival it would be.He said, wait, he said…My first coming to age festival?!I jumped out of h
Don't get me wrong, I did not have a sudden change of heart.I was just playing a bit like any child my age.Think about it. My life is not in danger anymore, I have a splendid new plan and an even more wonderful back up here in Castela as a knight if something gets wrong.I was just appreciating a good ride through the capital at almost 11 am! When was the last time I got a chance like this? With my build and sun allergy, never! The wind was good. . . His shoulders were very comfortable too…Yes, I am talking about the past, or do you think you had gotten the chance to see my soft side for more time?I would never allow such humiliation! So, let's forget that ever happened and get to the present at once. What can I say about my actual instance? The muddy ground is dirtying my bots. I am still half away from the Forrest, and I'm already out of breath.Should I consider getting some training? ... Forget it, I will never waste one entire hour of my life on getting tired.Anyway, the rea
To your dearest Majesty,I was appointed once again the duty of writing a report about the progress of my new delegated tasks.I thought long about how and from where I should begin. From the moment your Majesty left? From the moment I fell truly into my role?I chose to follow my heart's desire and write everything until the last detail, to begin from the simple and genuinely beginning. Please don't mistake my world. It is not my intention to be rude or disrespect your Majesty. In my opinion, the priority here is not to write a fact-to-fact document. But a letter from a friend to a father.Even though I must admit, It resembles more a novel than a report.I did get carried away while writing. The royal scribes greatly praised my abilities. My ambition is to make you as close as possible to the princess, so you can feel as if your Majesty were beside her. When she grows into an independent little girl, you will know her as well as I do.I don't mean to rush anything, of course. For no
The first volume of Strange Short Stories is now available on a****n as an ebook and physical book! Why should I buy it if I can read for free here? -The book on a****n has an extra chapter and illustrations that are not available on wenovel or goodnovel. The book on a****n contains corrected and improved versions of all the stories, leading to a whole new reading experience! (I'm sorry to leave you with the old version, but I preferred not to get rid of the originals!) Overall, reading the physical version of a book is always a more rewarding and comfortable experience. With that in mind I decided to publish the physical version of the book for those who feel that way too. Unfortunately, paper and ink are expensive. Anyway, hope you enjoy my work. By buying the book on a****n you will be helping me finish the second volume faster!
—Forward the coming-of-age festival? Are you sure, your majesty? —An agonized Rômulo asks in a desperate but still formal tone. The king, pacific as always, gestures for Rômulo to sit and calm down before making a statement. — You know the little prince, you know as much as I do that he is more than capable. If he is not ready, then we have time to prepare him to try again after years. Rômulo doesn't respond, I don't say anything either. I never bothered to study the Castellans rituals, now I feel they will be more relevant to me than I thought them to be. Rômulo sighs and relaxes in his chair. —And your majesty assumes that the little knight here will also be able to?- I knew he would be involved in this sooner or later. The king's sweet gaze turns to me and asks: —Zadkiel Alamex of Kreg, Knight of Castela, can you chase, capture, kill and dissect a wild boar? —When such a calm voice speaks such violent words, I am reminded that this is also the man who with his hands killed ma
The cold marble floor was wet, full of splashes. The noise of a child playing in the water catches my attention. No one was supposed to be here at this hour. Interestingly I walk towards the sound. When I manage to peek into the huge bathtub I see it. . . Him? Did he come here at this hour on purpose? The unnecessary sight burns my eyes. I don't scream, grab my clothes and silently head to the next room. The splashes continue. He doesn't seem to have noticed me. I quietly close the door behind me, locking myself in an uncomfortably small space. Desperately I stare at the door. You can't understand a thing of what is happening right now, can you? Well, I don't think I can do much right now, so I'll tell you exactly what happened. Yesterday I said I would enjoy my peaceful moment. And that's what I did, completed all the research and planning for the trip and took a good shower in the public bathroom. Unfortunately that was all the hours of sunshine allowed me to do. You already
I wake up to the always sweet voice of Naukar mentioning my name. —Good morning, Zadkiel, it's time to wake up. Well, it's eight in the morning. I let you sleep three more hours because you looked tired. Did you have sweet dreams? — I make an exorbitant effort to open my eyes and sit on the bed. I still not looking at Naukar, I say. — If I had any, I just forgot them. — I hear a tray being placed beside me. The smell of freshly baked bread helps me to wake up. I yawn and stretch as much as I can to try to get myself out of sleep. A little more awake I start eating from the breakfast tray that was brought to me. —I'm on my way, if you need anything, tell me now. — Naukar declares while messing up my hair. I can get used to it. Honestly, I would like her to dress me up, make my bed and brush my teeth. But I think it's time to leave some luxuries behind and work on becoming more independent. —No, thanks, I'll do it myself.— I answer still a little sleepy. No, —Then I'll go, take care
