I slowly pushed the door open and stepped into her room. Madam Helen was seated in front of the fireplace, her eyes looked into a distance as the fire before her cackled and roared.

I slipped into the room and stood behind her, letting the heat from the fireplace warm up my body.

“The chair beside me is empty,” her voice made me jump into nervousness.

I swallowed hard and forced my numb feet to shuffle close to her. I dropped into the rocking chair and stared into the bright fire in the fireplace.

“I am not going to apologize for putting you through the pain of running in the rain and getting your blood pressure hiked up because of me,” she began.

“I wasn’t expecting one either,” I rasped out a reply.

Silence ensued between us after that exchange of brusque words.

The door opened and a maid walked in with a tray containing a teapot and some cups.

She set it down on a coffee table and poured out hot tea for the both of us.
