PREPARATION DAY
The camp is in turmoil. The wolves have ordered us to make a feast, clean the rooms, and I quote "build an enormous bonfire or larger" because it can't be smaller than the one we had just two days ago. D*** ing entitled brats. Of course, I don't curse outwards, just in my mind, I don't want to be dragged to the edge of the compound just to be ripped to shreds. But seriously though how often can these people mate? Don't they ever get tired of rutting?! They're like little animals. It's a wonder they don't have a litter of children like their wild counterparts.I dump the stack of sticks at the feet of the mounting pile, for the others to build with. Thank goodness that wasn't on my to-do list today, because it was a real pain in the ass. My back is sore from all the bending, but who can I complain to? I've got an entire day of chores to complete before retiring to the safety of my cot and thank their moon, they don't want us around during their sacrilegious mating ceremony. The sound of shouting grabs my attention as I hurry back to the kitchen, a crowd of wolves and slaves grabbing my attention. Curious, I pause at the door, lifting my eyes to see what the commotion was about.A werewolf stands spuing venom at a cowering human while the others just stand affronted, unable to do much about her situation. Others from the kitchen join me at the door as well, the she-wolf's voice mounting higher and higher drawing more attention towards herself."You're a little thief!""But I didn't....." The humans words are paused in their place, as she nurses her cheek from the she wolf's slap."And what makes it worst, you show no respect you little vermin. Do you not know who I am?"The others behind me mumble about her, but still no one moves to defend the slave. I can't either. We have no status here, and attempting to do so would only worsen your chances of survival.Werewolves were fickle creatures. At times they were human, though lacking the same compassion for their pack members towards us. Then at other times they were more animalistic. Especially in their mating season."Do you not?!" She screams at her once more before taking a fist full of her hair and pushed her into the ground.I can't hear what the poor girl is saying, but if the huddled masses of weeping humans and the cheers of she wolves were anything to go by, it wasn't good."I'm going to be the Gamma's official mate. You hear that!"I move away unable to take much more when her friends begin to kick her all over her body. Things like this happened almost everyday. With no one to defend us, wolves took advantage of us. Some were beaten within an inch of death, others sold, raped. It was horrible living in a werewolf colony and only the fittest of the fit survive.A rush of feet and all the other girls scrambled back to their assigned chores, pretneding as if they'd been busy the entire time. I placed the last pot down, stooping to gather the mops and bucket to clean the Alpha's house when a male wolf walks in."Line up! "A chill creeps down my spine at his voice. It was Beta Channing and everyone despised the little whore he was. Human or wolf, he f***ed everything that wore a skirt and was substantially abusive too.He walks around us, eyes roaming, perverted in his gaze, yet intimidating in his office. Next to the Apha, he was most feared, since whatever he said automatically became law in his absence."Grayson isn't much for fanfares" A dark voice booms before a head full of locks and dark eyes penetrate the room, followed by the tall lean body of the Alpha. Everyone trembled around me, knowing that some destruction followed his presence and neither of us was prepared to die."No. But the missy is, " Beta Channing answers stopping before a redhead whose legs give out pooling her to the floor. "I shouldn't invite you out anymore, you always make the little minxs terrified. "Alpha Blaze scrubs his heavily stumbled chin glancing around the kitchen, lifting pots, and inspecting the interior of plates for only heaven knows what. The kitchen inspector would have our heads if her reflection didn't glow as bright as the moon in everything. Not to mention how she threatens us every day of embarrassing her before the Alpha or any other wolf for that matter."Like I said. I shouldn't even be here, " he turns towards us, terrified and pliant to him even to our deaths, a bored expression on his face. "Tonight is the mating ceremony for a loyal wolf of mine. I expect nothing besides your blood and sweat. Your best will not be good enough. If anyone complains about anything tonight I'll kill you all myself. "He turns away without a backward glance heading for the door."Leave the girl and come Channing. You made her piss herself, it's disgusting. "When the door shuts leaving us with peace and his threat looming above our heads, cries break out in the same wave as murmurs."That bitch. Surely someone will die tonight. ""Yes, did you see what she did to Jessica? Poor girl. ""Didn't she use to help her in the house?""Yes. Just goes to show, wolves can't be trusted. That Beta had her thrown into the dungeon. No one will believe that she didn't steal anything. ""And she's one to talk about being the Gamma's female. Half the wolves in the colony has laid with her. ""We better stop before someone hears us. ""We're never going to have everything completed on time and get the bonfire started. ""Have you seen her ridiculous requests? Fur for all the quests. ""Moonshine from Jack's barrels. ""Roasted beef, rotisserie chicken and lamb chops. "Black smoke springs from the oven filling the kitchen and I watch as two girls grabbed mittens, opening the large door and saturating the overcrowded interior with smoke.Everyone coughs, my eyes and throat burning as we clamored for clean air to fill our lungs. Then finally someone pries open a window, diffusing the smoke out."We're f***ed!" One of the girl's cry dropping herself to the ground."How long was it in there?" Another asks."Does it really matter? She shouldn't have left it unattended. ""Anyone could've timed it as well. We're all working here. " The girl cries still weeping."If you have time to complain, you're not doing enough work. " A woman chastises from behind us suddenly. If she sees the burnt meat she doesn't comment, her face set in that permanent scowl of hers as she glares at each of us."Who's on cleaning duty today?""That would be me, " I speak up."The Alpha wants you to clean his office asap. Get moving! " She snaps when I don't move immediately. The bucket clanks against my feet as I hurry towards the large black house, ignoring the upturned noses of she wolves and their teasing about being smelly and dirty. I've been in the woods all morning and toiling in the sun. How clean did they expect me to smell?"Hello?" I call before heading inside. The house was bathed in shadows, a few wall lamps lit here and there but that was it. I got to work, deciding to clean from the entry way then to his office, and lastly everywhere else.Night had already descended by the time I was finished dusting and wiping the floor. The pepper lights that's strung outside leading towards the large bonfire blinking beautifully in the night. For a brief moment, I treasure the sound of crickets and the hooting of howl, and not a moment too late when they were replaced by the beating of drums. The mating ceremony had begun, an open invitation to all unmated males and she-wolves to join the celebration that would then last for two whole nights and day.All that meant for us was more work. They are like mutts, rutted like rabbits and during that time no one was safe. A minor offense made you a participant of their drag hunt during the day. The pumping of testosterone and estrogen or heat as they called it seemed to force every unmated wolf in an urge to just f*** the night away. Most times it ends in orgys, with females who find themselves pregnant over the next few months clueless as to the father. The door to Alpha Blaze's office swings open without much resistance and I find it odd, since I always had to use the key whenever I cleaned. The room is dark and I squint doing my best to decipher anything out of place. Contented, I move back to grab the bucket and mop pulling them inside."Mhm"I pause glancing around, now confused as to the sound when it comes again."Mhm, oh....ohhhhh"My eyes widen in shock, pursing my lips as it dawns on me about what I've walked in on."Blaze, oh Blaze, please" she groans.I take a step back, then another stumbling into the bucket and I grapple in the dark for the knob to the door to escape in the night."Who's there?" Alpha Blaze calls but I don't answer, pulling the door open, stumbling into the hall way and hurry away. That bitch! It didn't take night vision to know it was that same ignorant she wolf from this afternoon that was holed up with the Alpha. And f**king at that.My timid steps spins me down a stair and smack right into the concrete making of flesh and bone.Goodness it was another of those wolves again."What are you doing here?"My body immediately went immobile, stomach falling to the floor.I knew that voice. Okay, not know it, like I do my way back to the barracks but I've heard it before. The husky baritone that belongs to a male that has already experienced puberty, yet held the command of a rank that could make you piss your pants- or whatever."Did you not hear my question?!" There's a hint of annoyance there, blended with impatience and I find myself smiling like an idiot.Backpedalling from his frame I placed distance between us. Both for my rationality and the fact that the last thing I needed was a rumor about me and a highclass wolf."I.. I""Why are you wet?""Um...the bucket. I tripped. "He folds his hands that's ripped with veins across the broad expanse of chest that seems to go on for ages, looking unimpressed with my answer. If I wasn't mistaken, this was Gamma Grayson. The long unkempt midnight black hair, atop his head wet from either perspiration or a recent bath. Grayson stares at me for a prolonged period of time in silence. One that eats away at my sanity because I can't just excuse myself from his presence. I busy myself with staring at his wrinkled shirt and stained pants, wondering why he's not dressed for the occasion."Have you seen Blaze or a shewolf around?"Divine guidance.Of all the things to query."Um, no. ""You haven't seen either of them?"His voice accuses me that he knows of my fib, but if I admit to it, then he'll ask where they are, maybe what I've seen, know. I couldn't risk it."No, " my eyes stay buried into the ground afraid he'll see right through me.I've heard tales of his uncanny ways of being able to figure out a lie by his enemies, facing him head-on feels like a suicide mission."I don't believe you. ""What?!"Silver eyes crash against mine, dropping me into a glacier. His gaze hard, cold and calculating. I've been around wolves everyday for the last ten years, but none had made me feel as terrified as he did within this moment."I said, I don't believe you, " Grayso takes a step forward followed by my retreat. "And you will tell me what you know. ""I don't know. ""What don't you know little human?"Another forward, another backward until he's got me backed against a wall, the giant towering above me. A tsunami to a boat that was about to go splinter."What you're talking about?" I say hesitantly."You don't look at me. "I bristled beneath him. "I don't like you. "Something akin to laughter falls from his mouth taking both of us by surprise. His silver eyes dialate yet contract so quickly I could almost chalk it up to my imagination, if I hadn't been this close. Yet his expression regains that stony anger that lives there, his aura darkening further."Oh my goodness what the hell is that smell?!"Thank the goddess!"Grayson! Love what are you doing here?" The cheating she wolf wraps her claws around his arm, pulling him away from me."Your perfume is heavy. "I swear nothing misses this man but peew, her perfume was annoyingly high. A vain attempt to cover up her evidence."Oh, it was a gift from one of the girls, " she leans in, giving him a peck on the cheek that sends bile to the back of my throat, imaging what she could've done with that mouth just moments prior. "Don't you like it?""It's fine. "No he doesn't.She shoots me a venomous look before turning up her nose."Eww. You're the nasty smell that suffocating the room?! You are aware this is the Pack house right?"I roll my eyes."What did you want with a filthy thing like that?" His mate asks still clinging to him like a frog to a tree."I'm trying to find Blaze, have you seen him?""Oh, " the she wolf goes quiet then. "He was going to his office last I saw him. We should go to the bonfire. Everyone's waiting for us. "Grayson releases her grip on his hands stepping around her."Go, enjoy yourself. I need to see Blaze. "He moves towards the office where my bucket sits, contents spilled and mop askew from my tumble, his eyes moving back to me as if confirming my words."Wait" his mate meanders around him, actions sloppy as she slips but he catches her in time much to my disappointment. "It's our announcement night. You're really leaving me on my own, for Blaze no less?!""I'll only be a minute. "She gives him a stupid pout. What's with the freaking pouting? But he barely cast's her a second glance moving towards the office while my fingers tremble at my side."Grayson!"Maybe I should stop him. Then again that bitch deserved to be discovered for her cheating ass."Darling""Why are you so nervous?"Cause she's a cheating, lying bastard, but I keep my opinion to myself. The door next to us swings open suddenly, the bulky brooding figure of our Alpha revealing himself.Grayson's eyes land on me once more,"Thought you said neither of them were here. "SECRETS ***Warning: contains triggers. I sputter to come up with an excuse now being the one caught in my lie. I'm wet from having swum in my overturned bucket of water and the awful Alpha was standing exactly next to it. "What's going on here? Why aren't you at the celebration?" Alpha Blaze asks Grayson completely ignoring the rest of us- or me. "Hmph, look who was looking to get out of her chores. And dousing the entire house in that dreadful smell" The she-wolf tsks at me, a smug grin on her face. "We should punish her. Make her clean everywhere until her nails fall off" Wrench! "It was an accident" I chip in quickly disturbed that this ridiculous situation was about to escalate. "What would cause you to do that?" Grayson asks, jumping on the bandwagon, also ignoring the question that the Alpha had geared towards him. Besides the fact that I walked in on your
CHEATERS NEVER PROSPER My hand trembled as I lifted and tied the final knot to my dress, securing it in place having reached home and taken a bath. There was no way I could ever let anyone see me in my tattered state. But the worst of all was the imprint of a memory that, that neantherthal left. I didn't want to be fearful of men and I knew they already couldn't be trusted. But this was much worst. I'll be walking on egg shells my entire life. I couldn't stay here any longer. "Doesn't that hurt? That's a nasty gnash. " I jump, startled that someone was already awake. Trish stared at me from where she stood, eyes glued to my hand while Zara rubs her eyes just stirring awake. "What, what's going on?" "Leila has a wounded arm, " Trish explains moving forward to inspect it. I had all but forgotten about it. That asshole must had torn my flesh when I tugged my hand from him. The slashes weren't deep per say, but it did hurt like f**k now thinking about it. "Dear goodness Leila, wha
NEW MATE There's a knocking then pounding. A large boom and everyone stirrs from their beds including myself. Bright lights suddenly envelop the darkened rooms, and I raise my arms squinting. There wasn't even the moon in the damn sky, yet here they were disturbing everyones sleep. "Everyone out now!" "What the hell is going on?!" Asks Zara grabbing a coat as we all venture into the chilly outside. A few girls start to sneeze while others huddle together for warmth. The second the cold night air brushed my ankles I wanted to run back in, but glancing back, they had already started to roughen up a few girls that were moving slowly. "Line up" Grayson. He had managed to clean himself up just for this I observed. No liquor in his hand either, though his jaw was set in that square that didn't dare make you question his command. "There's a girl that's missing" Beta
DECISIONS TO MAKE Leila" one of the girls sing as she enters our bunker. I glance up from my pile doing my best to hide my charring anxiety. "Hmm?" "We're you at the announcement today?" Trish asked looking wide eyed and fearful. "Uh, no. Sorry" I wasn't the least interested in what that Alpha had to say, and finding out it was the Gamma that had an announcement only made it worst. I don't know what it is, can't figure out what it is. Somehow always, since of late
TOMORROW I don't get up and go to work like I normally would. I lay with Zara that's sick and pining about the loss of our friend, she won't eat or sleep and I'm aching to tell her about my plans. I'm not staying here another day. I've made up my mind. I spent the entire night staring through the window. Tears had already forced Zara to sleep by then, but I was busy staring at the moon, in hopes of seeing Trish return. But that hasn't been the case. I'm huddled in Trish's bed that's in the corner, hidden from prying eyes. It's been about the fifteenth time someone has come to find me, maybe by Grayson's order, but I wasn't sticking around to find out. "Zara" Her bloated eyes, red and teary, gaze up at me. She's wrapped up in blankets, blank but immobile as she stares everywhere and nowhere. "I'm planning to leave" She nods may be thinking I'll return in the evening. But I wasn't coming back. "No I mean, I'm leaving. Running away, not coming back" Zara
The last thing I remember was falling. Falling continuously, endlessly screaming my guts out, until finally, I remember breaking the surface of the water. That's all I know. There's a bright light that I'm currently starting at, quietly contemplating if I made it to the end of my life. Reaching the other side. Should I attempt to touch it, get up and walk towards it? Should I hear a voice coming from it? Those thoughts fill my head while I lay there- wherever I am, floating, lying in wait in limbo. Words echo around me, fading in and out until I'm able to hear distinctions between them. Male and female. Wolves always talk about Selene their goddess, didn't realize she was a hermaphrodite. Go figures. She has to be twisted like that to bless the children who murdered and made miserable others. "That's the last one?" "Yeah, almost didn't make it. " A sharp sting pulls me from everything, the light fading, tossing me back into reality. I roll to my side, in a hurry to sit up, glanci
The Captial My arms hurt from keeping me wrapped around the damnned tree. Sleep keeps attempting to overtake me, but if I ever allow myself to, I'll fall splat against the ground. Something catches my eye stirring in the shadows, the ground thudding tumultously, trees swinging left and right. Something large was coming and it was coming fast. I crouch closer towards my side of the tree, my partner oblivious to what was about to occur in short order. A gasp leaves one of the females, a few trees down from me, when the monsters of the night break through the canopy. Their large forms lumber beneath us, nose sniffling and growling and I brace myself hoping they left us alone. A high pitched scream pierces the silent night, before the chaos begins. There's scrambling from all the trees around me, shouts to hurry and escape thrown into the night. Bodies fall from the trees, people jumping, others too terrfied to move and become devoured. For the first time in my life, I saw the real face
REUNITED Ten years ago Heberus was a lying, convincing son of a bitch. He didn't care about the people within or without the gates. Imagine living in a place that horded food yet people were starving, guards abused their power, children are left to fend for themselves. In some ways it sounds as if I've jumped from the hot pot into the fire. Trust me, the wolves were much better, at least you can comfort yourselves with the fact that they were beasts. But what were the humans excuse for being little insufferable nuisances?! None. There were none and could be none. When I ran away, I thought things had to be much better on the outside, the scene still swinging on a pendulum depending on which side of the glass you chose to look. Half empty or half full. But glancing around, I could see things haven't changed. A girl's greatest chance of evading starvation was hoping sh
BONDS TRIUMPH ANY TRIAL The worst thing about starting a revolution is that you have to see it through. I'm starting not to like that idea. Mostly because I'm stuck inside alone- well not necessarily all by myself but those that support me, cannot attend to my needs. And by needs, you know what I mean. No, not sex. Get your head out of the gutters.I meant conversation, cuddles, and late-night plays.I was part of the front line too, but then I was physically and forcefully removed without choice or option; because we found out an important matter. Only I knew first this time but kept it hidden. For good reason. This eventuality.I sigh once more palming my stomach. Grayson has been gone for three weeks. He's taken my women, his men, frankly anything that would remind me of what's going on outside those gates. So many more humans have joined our cause to live freely and have freedom. And we have spread like a wildfire, expanding our borders in even spaces I didn't think possible. We
HE'S NOT THE ALPHA Darnick is compliant with his decision to return, which only leaves Rasmus and me as the only jittery pawns on his chess board. This uninformed selfish decision of my father will run everything we've worked for into the ground and when Leila gets wind of this, it will be nothing short of a fuse explosion. "When are we leaving?" "At a convenient time for all of us," Xavier answers as if we're talking about abandoning cattle. That these weren't people with lives. Lives that were depending on us to protect them. "When was this decision made? ""Does it matter when it was made? My decision is final.""We're leaving them to die. It's a suicide mission. " I clarify just in case he was too blind to the reality of the situation at hand. "Commander Lyra has the know-how to navigate even the toughest of circumstances. ""The capability but not the equipment she needs. She hasn't had that for a while now. Or was that the reason why you've decided to save half her battalion
IMPOSSIBLE CIRCUMSTANCESGRAYSON "You've made a grave mistake confronting him before everyone else, " I told my little mate when we had returned to her quarters."I know, I know, " Leila nods. "You allowed your emotions to get the best of you and now he's out for blood. ""I know. He'll want my head for this." She paces around her room rubbing her arms as if exposed to the cold. "I just, it felt too much. After I thought we lost them all. I mourned them, Grayson." Leila's dark eyes meet mine confusion swirling in the midst as she gazes up at me. "How are they still alive, it's not possible? Why wasn't everyone else saved? If he's so strong why isn't everyone still alive? Marie, Louis, and his family. "Leila's body trembles as she breaks into tears once more, her emotions overriding the restraint she had built up now bursting at the seams. "It doesn't matter. They're here and alive. ""Except it does. How can I tell the part of me that's been hollow for months now that it was all a
A PACK LOST A PACK GAINED I was on the outside surveying our space to plant more food and possibly rear a few animals. It's been a rough couple of months and my arm heals at snails pace. The wolves are still gathered around the periphery of the fortress, steadfast and unmoving since Grayson hasn't lifted his command. Hadn't we had them, perhaps Phineas' attempts to destroy us would have succeeded at his first crack.A hand reaches around, blocking my view and I attempt to back away, ducking beneath in the process, only to be enclosed in hard flesh and bones. "Morning," He growls at my ear ."It's afternoon," I correct."Still early," he rasps at my ear, back pedaling both of us in the process."Where are you taking me?" I question the oaf."You'll see soon enough.""I have work to do," I argue."You're always working," His reply comes, feet still walking blindly and his breath warm a constant against my cheek."Do you even know where you're going?" I enquire not liking the fact that
STRONGERDaina runs away while I sit in open contemplation. My chest and cheeks hurt like fudge sticks, my shoulders are sore, but my head felt as if I'd hit it against the column, knocking myself out for half my lifetime. My body was heavy as lead, even though I was only seated upright."I wouldn't advise moving as yet, Luna. You took quite a nasty beating and the medicine still needs time to circulate.""Impeccable timing," I told him, my voice croaking as that of a hoarse frog, my eyes quickly sweeping the room. It wasn't mine, but from the nonexistent accolades, I knew this was Grayson's plain room. I could almost chuckle thinking of how filled this room will easily become with Tyler's drawings over the years. That is if he intended on staying here. Fear seized my chest and I clutched at it, telling myself I'm only overreacting. Where else would he seek to go?"Where's Grayson?""The Alpha is currently being looked after." Gamma Kole answers. My brain dissects the funny way he dec
DAINA ALL MEN MUST SERVE Inside was just boring and mourful. All everyone bickered about was the war and how things should have been different. They lamented about losing people and about not being prepared more. All it did was agitate me. It was the past, it was said and done and cannot be changed. I desperately wanted to scream at them to just shut up and move on with their lives. Focus on freaking surviving. What else could we do at this point?Glancing around the blackened room and finding the newly acquired Alphas only made my mouth more sour. Six people from two entire packs survived that freaking attack. What kind of monster army did Alpha Phineas have to have subdued them like that? His Luna had been such a simple girl when we met last. I supoose that's the reason behind her apparent simpleton behavior. Her Alpha was terrifying.I push to leave the suffocating atmosphere of the dead and dying, a human warrior shifting into my path and blocking my way."Sorry," He says voice
GRAYSON ALPHA COMMAND That bastard Phineas, I bet he had timed Leila just right to have cornered her inside her room. I had every intent on ripping his head from his shoulders, but the damned ass had escaped rolling over the window and scampering down the wall with his tail between his legs.I huff, watching as he scurried away, a f*king cheeky smile on his face, echoing the words of his return. I can't stay furious, turning to find Leila unmoving, my worst fears manifesting seeing how beaten up she was.My teeth screech on edge, Phineas now making himself my number one enemy. Known to him, I promised death to whoever touched Leila and my wrath knew no bounds or creed. My body bows with stress, kneeling before the blood that heats my veins. Leila cries out from pain that strikes my soul, her entire being trembling as I took her into my arms. Her lips bleed, bruises lining her forehead and arms. That son of a bitch!"I'm going to die, I'm going to die," Leila whispers, her words mir
SACRIFICES ***WARNING: May contain triggers. Our walk to the fortress takes days when in reality it should've only been a few hours. With the massive injuries that our group had sustained, we were left to creep as old men, creating shelters and entertaining others from dwelling on the reality of our condition. Tyler sticks on my heels aiding me to gather as much fruits as possible. A few murmur about having only that to eat, but I turn my ears and bite my tongue. What did they want me to do, hunt a boar? They weren't Tyler and I was never asking Grayson to go find one either. Everyone had to learn to live within their means and accept the case for what it is. If we send enough abled out people out and they were attacked, any hopes of us rebuilding would be smashed against the rocks. I glance at the sky a little perturbed about the overcast weather, but think better of it when I glanced back at the ailing pack. Maybe it was best that we didn't rush them. Tyler tightly grips my arm u
BLEEDING HEART "Leila, you cant afford to have your emotions control you," Gerzi scolds or maybe it's sturdy advice. My entire body trembles at the thoughts of the many people we've lost. The glossy eyes that stare back at me- us by extension. The many children lost, the parents that are beside themselves in agony. Too traumatized to even utter a word. The carnage of Trish's body flashing before my eyes forcing me into a mental hell I wanted not. I paused my steps, closing my eyes as I grit my teeth through the pain. I didn't want to loose anymore people to this. I couldn't!War has places us all on the same ranking. We were all vulnerable and helpless. Dependent on each other for growth, stability and strength. We were as weak as the smallest one among us. It shed light on our shortcomings. The distrust and lingering desparities between us. There were no lines today in that attack. We were all preys."There's a large cave nestled in some rocks ay the edge," Gerzi directs. "Just ke
