Ferrara

I struggled to wrap my head around the amount of power Janelle had. Since the dawn of time, wolf magic and witch magic were separate. Wolves were content knowing that witches couldn’t touch wolf magic.

And yet here was Janelle who could manipulate a whole pack. I wanted to recoil in horror, but Janelle looked so damn alone on the floor. I had a feeling this was not the first time she felt like a monster.

“The magic you are born with does not make you an abomination,” Saul said quietly from behind me. “Obviously your family has this magic for a reason, but we can all agree it is not so abusive that alphas can gain more power. Can he still use that power now that you’re out of the witches’ reach?”

Janelle shook her head. “The magic won’t sever instantly. There are layers and layers woven into the bond that will gradually fade. His hold on his pack is loosening, but it’ll take time before they’re all free.”

“Huh. So he didn’t need to get his hands dirty to kill anyone. He could p

ViolettaI woke up feeling far more refreshed and relaxed than I had in weeks. The dingy motel room was nothing like the luxury suite Emerson had imprisoned me in, but that didn’t even matter to me. Ferrara was holding me in bed. I had friends surrounding me. I was safe. And relaxed. Ferrara and I had spent well into the dawn hours screwing each other silly. Both of us somehow felt that if we fucked enough, we could make the mating bond stay. That wasn’t how mating bonds worked, and we both knew it.Maybe we were just making up for lost time. When I opened my eyes, light flooded the room. Ferrara was still curled around me, but he was fully dressed. With a frown, I opened my eyes. He gave me a soft smile.“What time is it?” I asked huskily as I sat up.“A little before noon. Saul and Kenzi are out scouting the town, looking for spots where Emerson might post wolves and attack. Finn and Amelia are mostly arguing, and Janelle is sleeping. FerraraI made a note on my phone for rain ponchos and tried not to growl. It was strange planning for such a long journey as a human and having to think about things like rain. Food.Medical supplies. I frowned at Amelia’s text.We don’t need motion sickness pills. We’re wolves. Her response was immediate. And do you know if Saul or Violetta or Finn have ever been on a boat? I haven’t. How do you know we won’t get sick?Damn it.Put them on the list.I hadn’t wanted us to split up. I didn’t like any wolf being out on their own, but Amelia apparently wasn’t as happy being away from the motel room as I thought. She was only in the next store, but I didn’t like that I couldn’t see her.I like it even less that the bond wasn’t there. I couldn’t feel her either.Hats. Sunscreen. Loose clothing that we could move in. The captain had also mentioned that we’d be sharing two cabins, so I went to check out the bed rolls in the sporting goods store.Watched.Immediately, I stilled as my wolf’s

Violetta“Murder? You’re fucking kidding me!” I stared at Amelia in shock. It had only been two hours since our cellphones had gone down. Finn had gone out looking for Amelia and Ferrara and returned one hour ago to report that they weren’t in any of the stores. Two hours of agony, of thinking that Amelia might be dead. Finn was ready to lose his mind, but my mating bond was bright and throbbing. I just couldn’t figure out how to use it to communicate to Ferrara. To figure out what the hell was happening with them.Turns out, he was in police custody. Human police custody.“Who the hell do they think he murdered?”“You. And Janelle,” Amelia said quietly. “They don’t have any evidence, but they’re going to hold him for the longest amount of time possible. That’s three days. He’s requested a lawyer, but conveniently, the only criminal lawyer in town is on vacation. They said it’ll take two days to get someone here. We’ll never get our pack lawyer down in time either.”“They have to have

FerraraCaged. My wolf wanted to howl in fury, but we both stood against the walls, as far away from the bars as we could get, and waited, silently, for whatever the next move might be.Emerson had me trapped. I doubted this was the end game.To his credit, the detective seemed frustrated with the whole case. Things didn’t make sense, and he’d been willing to let me go except that the chief stepped in and ordered him to hold me.Maybe I was reading too much into it. Maybe it was just because their town wasn’t used to murders, and they really did think I was guilty and didn’t want to let me go.That hope was dashed when the door opened and two officers stepped in, their batons in hand and cold smiles on their faces. I knew those officers. Jones and Whalen.I didn’t move as they stopped at the bars and beat their sticks against it. “You like to think you’re a tough boy, don’tcha?” Jones taunted. “How tough you feeling now?”Not saying a word, I watched as Whalen closed the door separati

ViolettaI stared at Officer Jones’s blank face as he held the door open to the station. The sharp metallic smell of blood overwhelmed my senses as I stepped closer. Kenzi grabbed my arms but was careful not to say anything. Janelle had been very clear that the officers would remember everything we said. This was the man who’d beat Ferrara. There wasn’t a mark on him. My mate really was trying to play by the rules. In a game where no one was playing by the rules, it would get him killed. “I find it alarming, Officer Jones,” I said loudly. “That my husband has been beaten but there’s no one in the cell with him. I’m sure you have an explanation for this.”“No, ma’am,” he said woodenly. The spell would only allow him to say yes or no.“I see. When my husband’s lawyer arrives, I’m sure he’ll be looking into the matter. In the meantime, if any more marks appear on him, we will sue this department for every little penny that you have. Do you understand?”“Yes, ma’am.”Kenzi practically pus

ViolettaI slept fitfully that night. I wouldn’t have slept at all except that Saul slipped something in my drink. I’d been furious with him, but he reminded me that I was still healing. And that Ferrara needed me at the top of my game.Still, I hated sleeping alone. Strange. I’d gotten so used to sleeping alone that it was strange sleeping with Ferrara. There was a time I’d felt so fucking trapped by his side. Then, I was alone again and trying to remind myself that it was for the best. Now I knew that I wasn’t giving Ferrara up without a fight. We had our problems, but he was mine now. So when I glanced out the window at just a few hours before dawn and saw the figures emerging in the parking lot, I knew who it was.“Kenzi,” I barked at the woman still sleeping in the bed. “Emerson is here.”Finn, who’d been on guard, was already opening the adjacent door. Saul, Amelia, and Janelle filed quietly behind him. “It hasn’t even been twelve hours,” Finn grunted.“Emerson has never been kn

Ferrara“Knox. You’ve got another chance to make this easy on you,” Jones said as he opened my cell door. His eyes burned with hatred as he stared at me. “If I were you, I’d make that confession today.”Another threat. Curiously, that was all Officer Jones had since Violetta had left. Threats and heated looks. Whatever she’d said to him had made an impact. So the detective wanted to speak to me again. Maybe it was to finally give up this charade and let me go.Nothing was ever that easy.Jones didn’t remove the handcuffs but instead attached them to the table before trying to push me into the seat. I didn’t budge and instead stared down at him. “Sit down,” he barked and pulled out the baton.“Officer,” Detective Warnos said as he entered the room. “That won’t be necessary. You can leave us.”“I’m thinking I should stay.”“This is an interrogation and not an arrest. Please leave.” The detective’s voice was soft but final. Jones snarled at him but left. ViolettaI did not question why Kenzi had a miniskirt and a halter top, but I did roll my eyes when she handed it to me. It was the next night, and we were running out of time to free Ferrara and leave this side of the mountain.Tonight was the last night we had to confront the motel manager.Cindy had woken up to just cry and shiver. Finn and Saul were trying to comfort her and help her heal, which was fine. Amelia and Kenzi were both eager to help me with tonight’s errand.“When was the last time you brushed your hair?” Kenzi complained as she yanked her brush through it. “Sometimes I cannot believe he chose you over me.”“When you go from being a prisoner, to almost dying, to having your mate locked up in jail, you can tell me where haircare falls in your list of priorities,” I retorted as I winced. It felt like the damn woman was pulling my hair out of my head. After tying it back with a loose ponytail, I let her put a little bit of powder on my face and then she sent me on my way

ViolettaI did as much good at Indigo Peak as I could while I was there, but few of the wolves were happy to see me, so I spent most of my time in my room reviewing Maeve's books in an attempt to help Finn get organized. I ignored all the massive journals the crazed woman had collected. I was no longer the ternary, and they had nothing to do with me.Lunessa, Irene, and the other witches helped identify the small faction of witches who'd been working against Maeve. Most of them were imprisoned. Some were in the field when Lunessa stole their magic. And some were dead. There were enough that, in a few months, the land might be healed enough to start growing again, just in time for spring. At least, that was the hope.Leaving Finn was difficult. I didn't know where he was mentally, but I knew Indigo Peak needed his help, and he would provide it.And when Amelia returned with us, tears in her eyes, I tried not to get involved. Finn was making a mistake, but he would realize that. In due

ViolettaImmediately, I stepped inside the circle and felt the magic drain away. "I don't have magic anymore, but even if I did, none of this is for me. It was for a deranged woman to hold on to a memory of when she thought she was in control. She's dead now, and I don't need this place to know that I had a happy family once. And I don't need to bring any of that up. I have enough happiness in my immediate past."Finn stared at the home as the flowers started to wither and the wood started to break down. Its age was catching up to it. "I could burn it to the ground," he said darkly."I think you should. I love that you wanted to give me a choice, but this place doesn't mean anything to me, and it's a symbol of Indigo Peak's troubled past. Burn it and make way for the future. You're going to be an amazing alpha, and if you'll let me, I'll come visit often to check in on you. I'm going to miss you and Amelia.""You're more than welcome, Violetta. I'll demand your visits, seeing as how I

ViolettaI woke up alone. For a moment, I thought I was back in Maeve's grip, chained to the wall, listening to Finn's cries as they tormented him. Tears pricked my eyes until I heard a voice in the room."Violetta."The hoarse whisper calmed me, and I took a deep breath. I was not alone. Maeve was dead. I'd been certain that Ferrara had been in the room with me at one point, but he was gone now. Sitting up, I looked over at the other bed. Lunessa looked only marginally better than she did before as she smiled at me. "You did it."When she started to cough, I rolled out of bed and made my way to her. Snuggling up next to her, I grabbed her water and held it up to her. "So did you. Lunessa, the amount of magic you displayed was insane. How are you?""Depleted," she admitted as she sipped her water. "And scared that I might not bounce back.""How did you do it?"She sipped the water more and leaned against me. Less than a year ago, she was the Maiden, a witch who'd saved my life once, e

Ferrara"Ferrara," London said in a low voice. "You are growling at the kitchen staff."Immediately, I pulled myself back. A dozen wolves stared at us, frightened. "My apologies. My thoughts are elsewhere," I told Finn. "Please continue."The staff cleared their throats. "We have access to large herds here, and we used to use the witches to magic the land to provide for the wild game so we could eat fresh all year. With the magic repurposed," one wolf said carefully, "much of the game fell ill. We tried to preserve meat, but our previous alpha believed in eating fresh and shut us down."Finn frowned. "I believe in eating fresh but also storing when prepping for leaner months. I'll speak to the witches about healing the land once more, but I won't know how long that will take. Do you have the supplies to cure the meat?"One wolf nodded. Finn looked over at us. "Do I have your permission to use some of your soldiers for an immediately hunt before you leave?"We all nodded, and the staff

FerraraFinn's eyes were red, and his wolf's power still spilled out of him as he sat stock still in the chair at a large conference table. Food was spread over the table, but it didn't look like he'd eaten any of it. Blood was still dried on his skin, and his clothes barely fit him.Two submissive wolves hovered uncertainly at the table, and as soon as we walked in, he dismissed them. They'd scurried out of the room like they'd been shot, and the doors slammed shut behind us."I cannot be alpha," Finn growled. "Not of this pack."I met his gaze head on and lifted an eyebrow. "It's a little late for that. You killed the previous alpha and slaughtered anyone who challenged, which, from what I can tell, included her second, third, and at least ten of her top guards.""I didn't realize that they were challenging me," he said tightly. "Do I have to die to relinquish my new position?"London, Elonso, and I exchanged looks and pulled out chairs at the table. I sniffed at the food. "Doesn't

FerraraPulling free from our captors, London and I raced up the hill. He got to Lunessa and yanked her from the stone before I could reach Violetta. A large, mutated wolf pounced at Violetta, and I dove into him. Teeth and claws raked into the flesh of my human form, but I ignored it. There was only one truth. If I didn't get to Violetta, she would be torn limb from limb.Shifting faster than I'd ever shifted in my life, I turned and raced back to her. With a roar, I pulled her chains from the rocks with my paws and turned back to her."Ferrara," she whispered and sank into the ground. "I'm sorry. I don't think I can walk, let alone shift. Help Finn."Finn didn't need my help. He was ripping through wolves at an alarming rate. I wasn't even sure he knew what he was doing.Violetta flinched, and I turned as another wolf tried to pounce. Ripping my claws into their flank, we tumbled, but as soon as I found my footing, I returned to her side.If she couldn't shift, she would be vulnerab

ViolettaThe outer ring of rocks on the hill were etched with symbols and held offerings to the elements. Water from the largest river on the mountain. A feather willingly given from a bird. Earth enriched and blessed. And fire sparked from the kindling of the land.Words from the spell rose up in my head as I was marched through the circle. Below me, an enormous audience had gathered. Most of the wolves were grotesque and foaming at the mouth. It seemed to take all of their energy to be still. Those who weren't mutated seemed so small, but there was nothing innocent in their gaze as they watched. In the silence, I heard someone roar Lunessa's name and then mine. Turning my head, I watched in horror as Ferrara and London were hauled to the front of the audience and forced to their knees. My gaze locked on to his, but there was nothing either of us could do.My chains were attached to one of the inner rocks, and on the other side, Lunessa, also dressed in white, was chained to the same

ViolettaI hadn't seen Finn all night, not since they dragged me away. I was taken to a completely different part of the building, three floors up, and chained to a different wall with a bed.Cozy.Instead of resting for the ritual, I pulled myself as close to the window as I could possibly get and stared outside. It was the same side of the building, the same view of the ritual circle. No new information presented itself, but while I was trying to find an escape, I was also searching for Ferrara.I could feel through the bond that he was close. Alive. Getting stronger every hour that passed. Hope flared inside of me.When the sun rose, the door opened. Three wolves and three witches stood before me. "Time to prepare," one of them said, her voice laced with excitement. She put a white dress on the bed.I glanced at it and snorted. "If you're hoping this is some kind of virginal sacrifice, I have bad news for you. I have been well-loved and well-fucked.""Don't be ridiculous. The magic

FerraraThere were at least fifteen dead wolves at our feet. Adrenaline surged through me, but I was losing too much blood. London could barely stand. A familiar male werewolf loomed over us."Ferrara. London." He spoke with a harsh rasp that further identified him. Dolan. Maeve's second-in-command. We never interacted much because Dolan rarely left the territory. Normally, her third traveled with her, something most alphas practiced, but Dolan was a different breed of wolf. Apparently, he enjoyed disciplining. There were rumors that Maeve had wolves in confinement for lifetime prison sentences, and Dolan liked to make them bleed, wait for the heal, and then rip them open all over again."I see you left your whipping station," I said hoarsely as I stood. My legs shook so badly that I nearly fell over again. "Just how many wolves did you bring to take us?""I have twenty more rogues on their way here," he said in a bored tone. "My alpha has commanded me to give you a choice. Continue t
