Murphy finally finished reading the letter.

A tear fell silently onto the paper, smudging the ink. He blinked, realizing that his face was already soaked with tears.

"Happiness, fulfillment, and no regrets…"

He stared at the final line of Gemma's letter, her blessing to him. At that moment, a strange madness overtook him, and he laughed and cried at the same time.

"Gemma, you're gone. How could I ever be happy and fulfilled?

"Do you know everything you saw before you left… was a lie? I lied to you. No regrets…"

Murphy laughed bitterly, and his voice was hollow. "A lie and a departure. Now, both our lives are full of regrets."

It was a long while before Murphy emerged from the room.

The moment he stepped out, he felt a surreal sensation. It was as if he had left behind an entirely different lifetime.

"Mr. Townsend, I assure you that Ms. Kirk's cryogenic preservation was conducted legally and ethically," Andre explained. "Here is the related documentation. Ms. Kirk personally

"Mr. Townsend, please calm down," Andre said while wiping the sweat from his brow. "I understand how you feel, but you've misunderstood me. When I mentioned thawing, I didn't mean it could happen now—I meant many years from now."Our current technology can rapidly freeze a person without damaging their cells. But as for thawing... I'm sorry, our capabilities haven't advanced that far yet.""How is that even possible?" Murphy snapped. "Freezing and thawing should go hand in hand. If you can't thaw someone, why offer cryogenic preservation at all?""Mr. Townsend, please listen to me carefully," Andre replied, his tone steady but firm. "Freezing and thawing are not the same process."Freezing is relatively straightforward. As long as the temperature is lowered rapidly enough, a person's cells remain intact. Although the body is frozen, the cells are still alive, just inactive. The individual is frozen in that exact moment, suspended in time, and they'll stop aging."But thawing is mu

Gemma's cryo-casket had been placed in the deep sea.Andre explained to Murphy that their cryogenic research group had only built cryo-casket storage facilities in the deep sea, not a fully operational research base. The storage rooms were only for housing cryo-caskets; they were not designed for human access."Mr. Townsend, as you may know, the seabed environment is vastly different from the surface. The low temperatures and high pressure make building a full research base under the sea incredibly expensive. To be honest, our research group has always struggled with funding, so we could only afford to construct cryo-casket storage rooms—not full experimental facilities."Additionally, to protect the cryo-caskets from seawater corrosion, the storage rooms are sealed, and even the air inside has been removed. Air contains oxygen, and oxygen can cause the materials of the cryo-caskets to oxidize. As a result, the storage rooms are completely inaccessible to people."If you insist on

As the young man spoke about his neighbor's daughter, his eyes sparkled like a beam of light piercing through a dark night. It was as if his entire life had been illuminated by her presence."I waited for so long until I finally grew up," he said, his voice tinged with both pride and longing. "But when I confessed my feelings to her with so much hope, she turned me down."The light in his eyes dimmed, and his tone softened. "She told me she's 12 years older than me, and if we got together, people would gossip. Well, I don't accept that," he continued, a stubborn determination rising in his voice. Murphy took the pen the young man handed him and, with a heart full of reverence and humility for love, wrote his thoughts in the young man's notebook.[To the unnamed "sister" of this young man, he shared your story with me. He told me a lot, but throughout, all I heard was your kindness toward him and his deep affection for you. Even in your refusal, your reasoning was the fear of others' judgment—not that you didn't love him.[So, if I may be so bold, I'd like to guess that you do care for this passionate young man, who loves you so deeply it's almost foolish.[But you can't admit it, can you? You feel the weight of being the older one. You believe you must be the rational one, that while your brother can be naive, you can't afford to be. Three days later, Murphy finally saw the Gemma he had been longing for day and night.Gemma lay in the cryo-casket with her eyes closed. Her expression looked serene, as if she were simply asleep.Looking at his small, slumbering rose inside the cryo-casket, Murphy could not help but recall countless nights spent coaxing her to sleep. Back then, she would lie in his arms just like this, with her long lashes curling upward, making her look as beautiful as a porcelain doll. The only difference now was that frost clung even to her eyelashes. Her complexion was so pale. It had to be freezing inside the cryo-casket."Gemma, don't be afraid. I'll join you soon. Gemma, I'm sorry I lied to you," Murphy said softly, reaching out as if to caress her pale cheek. But all he felt was the icy barrier of the cryo-casket's lid.He could not touch her—just as, so many times before, she had tried to reach his heart, only to be turned away."The truth is, Evangeline was never my girlfriend. "Mr. Townsend, are you serious?" Andre, the lead at the cryogenics research group, exclaimed in disbelief. "You're actually requesting to undergo cryogenic freezing?"Murphy nodded calmly. "That's correct. And starting today, I'll be your largest investor. From now on, 10% of Townsend Group's annual revenue will be allocated to your cryogenics research center to support your work on developing thawing technologies."10% did not sound like much, but this was Townsend Group. The company's monthly net profits exceeded billions, making the contribution staggering."Mr. Townsend, we're truly grateful for your financial support," Andre said patiently. "But cryogenic technology is primarily intended for patients suffering from terminal illnesses—conditions like ALS, cancer, or multiple organ failure. These are diseases that modern medicine has no way to cure.Andre continued, "Many of these terminal patients are still young. Instead of slowly succumbing to their illnesses, they hope to s

Andre spoke with heartfelt sincerity, hoping to convince Murphy to abandon the idea of freezing himself. Yet no matter what Andre said, Murphy had only one response."Whether or not the thawing process succeeds in the future, my decision won't change," Murphy declared. His voice was resolute, and his gaze was unwavering. "I missed her once. I won't miss her again."If the thaw succeeded, he would reunite with her in the future. If it did not, then he would stay by her side for eternity. The deep sea was so dark and cold. How could his little girl, who was so afraid of the dark and the cold, endure it without him?Upon realizing there was no changing Murphy's mind, Andre reluctantly handed over the consent forms for cryogenic freezing.Murphy moved swiftly through every step of the process—signing papers, undergoing a medical evaluation, and selecting a cryo-casket. "The countdown to thawing begins."The cold, mechanical voice of the electronic system echoed, causing everyone's hearts to tighten with anticipation."I heard the person being thawed this time is the major shareholder of our cryogenic base. Many of our research facilities and cryo-casket storage units were funded by him.""That's right! I heard that before he was frozen, he was a billionaire. But because his lover was diagnosed with an incurable disease, he chose to freeze himself to stay with her.""So rich and devoted—what a perfect man! His lover is incredibly lucky!"The new lab technicians whispered among themselves. Over the past 50 years, the love story of Murphy and Gemma, the cryogenic base's greatest benefactors, had spread widely throughout the facility. In the retelling of their tale, some details were lost, but the core of their story—a love so genuine it spanned half a century—had touched countless hearts."Five! Gemma asked curiously, "What did he say to you? Can you tell me about it?"Murphy leaned down, kissed her gently on the forehead, and began recounting the story of that chance encounter 50 years ago. When he finished, Murphy sighed thoughtfully. "It's been 50 years now. I wonder if that young man ever won over his sister?"Just as he finished speaking, the door to the lounge opened from the outside.Brendan Gabler, the base's former director, entered with the assistance of a cane while accompanied by a few researchers. The man was old. His hair was completely white, but he radiated an undeniable energy and liveliness."Mr. Townsend, this is our base's chief scientist, Mr. Brendan Gabler," the researchers introduced. "The laser-vapor hybrid thawing method used to wake you and Ms. Gemma was first conceptualized by Mr. Gabler over 40 years ago.""Really?" Murphy stepped forward respectfully and shook Brendan's hand. "Thank you for making it possible to wake me and the love of my lif

Gemma's fragile body took some time to recover, and the unpleasant effects of being thawed gradually subsided.During her recovery, Murphy patiently explained everything that had happened after she was frozen."So, it was all fake?" Gemma's wide, glistening eyes fixed on him. "Evangeline wasn't even your girlfriend? You hired her to trick me?"Faced with her large, watery eyes, Murphy inexplicably felt a pang of guilt."Gemma," he said, putting on a stern expression to feign seriousness. "That was 50 years ago. Surely, you're not petty enough to hold me accountable for something from half a century ago?""Fifty years ago? It was clearly just yesterday!" Gemma huffed, puffing her cheeks in frustration. In response, Murphy pulled out a calendar and pointed to the year. It was 2074. "How could it have been yesterday? Today is 2074. Evangeline might already be long gone, so let's forgive her, shall we?"Gemma blinked in confusion. What did Evangeline have to do with this?He was t
