"Are you sure you want to change your name, Ms. Anderson? You'll have to change your degree certificate, documentation, and passport once you do." Noelle Anderson nods. "I'm sure." The employee tries to talk her out of it. "It's quite troublesome for adults to change their names, and your current name sounds nice. Are you sure you don't want to think about it?" "No, I'm done thinking." She signs the form. "Sorry for the trouble and thanks." "Alright, then. The name you're changing to is… Aria Byrd, right?" "Yeah." Aria Byrd—it means a flight to freedom.

Chapter 1

"Are you sure you want to change your name, Ms. Anderson? Once you proceed with this, you'll have to replace your certificates, identification, and passport," a staff member said.

Noelle Anderson nodded. "I'm sure."

The staff tried to talk her out of it. "It's pretty troublesome for an adult to change their name, and your current name sounds nice. Are you sure you don't want to give this a second thought?"

"I'm sure." She signed the papers. "Thanks, and sorry for the trouble."

"It's no trouble. The name you're changing to is… Aria Byrd, right?"

"Yes." It was supposed to represent a flight to freedom, which was what she wanted for herself. She wanted to leave this place without leaving any traces.

Noelle asked, "Can I get my passport changed now?"

"Yes, you can. This is a slip to show that your name has been changed. You just need to head to the counter downstairs to get your passport replaced."

Noelle had her passport changed as quickly as possible. She didn't change anything else, though—her degree certificate, identification, and others.

She was going to leave in a week with her new passport, so she would leave her old identity behind. She didn't need it anymore.

As she left the building with her new passport, she saw Halston City's landmark building. A huge screen on the building's façade was playing a video of an exclusive interview with Prestige Corporation's CEO, Shawn Pitt.

The interviewer noticed one of Shawn's subconscious gestures. She smiled and said, "I notice that you keep rubbing your ring, Mr. Pitt. It looks like… a plain silver band. Is there any special story behind it?"

Shawn smiled gently and held up his hand, showing her the ring. "It's my wedding ring."

"Wait, really? Excuse my rudeness, but I thought someone of your net worth would wear a diamond wedding band. I imagine the diamond would be quite large, too."

"I made my and my wife's wedding rings myself," Shawn said. "I molded and polished them, even carving our initials on them."

"Wow, there really are letters engraved here. I see S.P. and…"

"N.A. My wife's name is Noelle Anderson."

"Now I'm really jealous. Your wife must've saved the universe in a past life to have a husband like you, Mr. Pitt."

"I'm the one who saved the universe to have her as my wife," Shawn said gently.

The passersby who had stopped to watch the interview began to talk about it, sounding envious. However, the star of the show—Noelle—merely smiled mockingly.

Once upon a time, she and Shawn had been deeply in love. They had spent 15 years together, from dating to marriage. To their teachers and classmates, they had always been a perfect couple.

But that had changed two months ago. Noelle had received a photo from a woman she didn't know.

The woman appeared to be in her early 20s, dressed in a revealing nightgown and pantyhose. Her neck was covered in hickeys— a clear sign of a recent, passionate encounter.

In the photo, she made a peace sign in the mirror, and she had a silver ring on her index finger. It was a little too large for her and seemed like it was meant for a man. Engraved on it was a row of letters—S.P. and N.A.

Not long after, Noelle spotted the woman at Shawn's office. Her name was Jessica Slater, and she was 21 years old. She was Shawn's new personal assistant.

Noelle had to admit, her mind had gone blank at that moment. She wanted to charge into Shawn's office to ask him whether a personal assistant's job scope covered sleeping with him.

However, she'd decided against it. The photo Jessica had sent her said everything she needed to know.

Noelle left amid the envious exclamations from the crowd and headed to a jewelry store. Her heart hurt as she slipped her wedding band off her ring finger.

"Is there any jewelry you would like to alter, miss?" a staff member asked politely.

"Melt this ring for me, please."

"There are initials engraved here—this ring must hold significant meaning, right? Are you absolutely sure you want to melt it?"

"Yes, I'm sure. Can you do it now, please?"

Half an hour later, Noelle headed home with an exquisite-looking jewelry box.

It was past 10:00 pm when Shawn returned, holding a bouquet of fresh flowers. "I'm sorry, Elle. Work has been really hectic lately, and I haven't had much time for you. I brought you your favorite freesias. Do you like them?"

As he stepped closer, she could smell a hint of a woman's perfume on him. She turned her head slightly and noticed a faint bite mark on his Adam's apple. Her eyes drifted to his collar, where a bright red lipstick stain stood out starkly against the fabric.

Noelle sneered. Had he been busy with work or getting it on with Jessica?

"Why aren't you saying anything?" Shawn asked.

She pushed him away. "I'm tired."

"I'll carry you to the bedroom so you can rest, then." He leaned down to lift her into his arms.

She pushed him away again. "You must be tired, too. You should shower and get some rest."

He reached out to hold her hand. That was when he noticed something. "Where's your wedding ring, Elle?"

"I took it off," Noelle said."But I made that ring myself. It's supposed to represent our love. Why would you take it off?" Shawn asked. She said indifferently, "I've gained weight, so it doesn't fit anymore."Only then did Shawn's expression soften. He smiled and said, "Then, I'll take it to the jeweler tomorrow to have it resized.""We'll see.""Oh, right. What's that on the table?" he asked, pointing at the jewelry box, looking surprised. "Is it a present for me?"Noelle nodded. "Yeah."Inside the box was a small piece of silver—it was the wedding ring she'd had melted.Shawn's face lit up. "What's the occasion? Why did you suddenly get me a gift?"His words made Noelle's heart freeze over. "It's… our wedding anniversary."Shawn's expression immediately fell. Then, he said almost sycophantically, "I'm sorry, Elle. I've been so busy with work that it slipped my mind. How about we go out for dinner? I'll make a reservation now…""No, it's fine. I've already eaten.""Then,

Shawn panicked, and he ran to Noelle's side of the car. "What's wrong, Elle?" he asked frantically. She kept puking, the nausea refusing to subside for the longest time. She couldn't understand. Why had Shawn cheated when he loved her so? Wasn't he afraid of her finding out? Or did he think he was perfectly capable of keeping this from her forever because he'd done such a good job of hiding it?Eventually, the cool night breeze helped to clear her mind."Are you okay, Elle?" Shawn asked. "I'll take you to the hospital now if you're feeling ill.""No, it's okay. It's probably something I ate for dinner.""Come to my office tomorrow, then. We can have dinner together."Noelle sneered inwardly. Did he want her to go to his office and watch him and Jessica get it on?Suddenly, she wanted to be nasty. "Sure. I'll go to work with you tomorrow and stay by your side as you work. Then, we can have dinner together before going home."Shawn didn't expect her to agree at all. His expressi

Noelle and Shawn headed to the company after breakfast. However, she insisted on sitting in the backseat because the thought of sitting in the front passenger seat revolted her. "I have motion sickness," she explained. "I'll be more comfortable in the backseat because I can lower the window and enjoy the wind."Shawn didn't force her to move to the front. "Alright, then. I'll drive as smoothly as possible."When they arrived at the company, he jogged to her side of the car to open the door for her. It was peak hour, so most of the employees were arriving at the same time. They watched as she got out of the car.A few senior executives even ran over and said sycophantically, "You're here, Mrs. Pitt. Mr. Pitt talks about this milk tea that you like almost every day. I'll go get you one right now."Another said, "I'll go get snacks, then. I know you like pastries."Shawn laughed and said, "Stop feeding her. She's already put on some weight and can't wear her wedding ring anymore."

Noelle said, "A friend lost her passport and asked me how to get a new one."Shawn hurried forward and held her tightly. "You scared the hell out of me. I thought you were leaving the country without me."Noelle turned away from him and retched again. She could smell the sickly sweetness on him, mingling with a woman's perfume. He rubbed her back with a pained expression. "What did they feed you? I already told them to be careful because your stomach's been acting up lately… I'm going to fire them right now!"She shoved him away with all her strength. "You can fire whoever you want to fire, but don't use me as an excuse for your actions!"Her sudden anger left him bewildered. "Are you mad at me, Elle? Is it because I've been too busy with work to spend time with you? I'll postpone all the work I have tomorrow so I can be with you. How does that sound?"She almost wanted to laugh at how ridiculous the situation was. "You'll only be with me?""Yes, I will."She took a deep breath

Jessica continued texting Noelle. "Oh, right. Take a look at this. It's a photo of my ultrasound scan—I'm pregnant."She sent Noelle a photo. Noelle zoomed in and saw the words on the scan. "8-week embryo. Threatened miscarriage."Jessica: "We did it on the rooftop countless times yesterday and tried all sorts of positions. Maybe it's because he was too rough with me, and now I'm showing signs of a miscarriage. Jessica: "It's all his fault. He said there's no fun in sleeping with you because you're like a dead body in bed. He wanted to do something exciting with me.Jessica: "The doctor said the baby's father needs to sign a form, regardless of whether we want to keep the baby. I had no choice but to ask him to join me. After all, his baby should be more important than your gastric issues, right?"…Noelle took a cab from the hospital and headed to a law firm. "Hi, I'd like to have a divorce agreement drafted."Since she didn't want anything from Shawn, the lawyer didn't take l

There were three days left until Noelle's flight.Jessica sent her a photo of Shawn grilling something by the seaside. "He brought me to Moldova for a holiday as a reward for carrying his child! He told me to lie here and let him handle the cooking since I'm pregnant."Noelle didn't reply. She merely invited a few close friends out to have a final gathering. After all, it was likely they would never see each other again. She had a lot of fun during the gathering.…There were two days left until her flight.Jessica sent her another photo of Shawn reading a book titled "What to Expect When You're Expecting".Jessica: "Looks like our new daddy is really concerned about his child. The baby's barely the size of a bean in my belly, but his father is already talking to him every day."Noelle still didn't reply. She went to the bank to convert all the money she had to Nelorian dollars. Then, she canceled all her bank cards.…There was one day left until Noelle's flight. This time,

Shawn didn't notice anything was wrong even after hanging up. Jessica was upset, though. "You've been mine and only mine for such a short time—it's going to be over soon. We're going to have to hide again after today."He gave her a warning look and said, "Don't let Noelle notice anything is wrong. You know what the consequences will be."She looked at him tearfully. "Alright, alright. You've warned me a thousand times already."When he saw that she was about to cry, he lowered his head to coax her. "You shouldn't cry now that you're pregnant. It's bad for the baby.""You were so fierce to me.""I'll buy you a bag as an apology, okay? Which one do you want?"She looked up. "Let's go back to the company first. I want you to have me once more before you go home."He looked disapproving. "I've already told Elle that I'd be home in two hours. I won't make it in time.""Tell her you got caught in traffic. It's normal for traffic to be bad near the airport…"Shawn checked the time,

Jessica fell silent, her expression sullen. Becoming Shawn's wife and taking his money would happen eventually—impatience wouldn't get her anywhere. For now, she would endure. It had been a while since Shawn had returned home during the day. He stood in the familiar villa, suddenly feeling a long-lost sense of novelty and interest. Perhaps this was what people meant when they said absence made the heart grow fonder."I'm back, Elle." He called out for Noelle as he walked past the garden and into the living room. The plants in the garden were neatly trimmed, and the interior decorations were the same as always. There wasn't a speck of dust in sight, so the tasteful furnishings were on full display. It was all thanks to Noelle's hard work in maintaining the home. He wanted to hold her and thank her for her efforts, but she was nowhere in sight. So, he approached the cleaners who dropped by to clean the house for a few hours daily and asked, "Where is Noelle? Has she gone out?"She sh

Chapter 10
The more Shawn thought about the situation, the more panicked he became. He worried that Noelle had done this in the heat of the moment. He was afraid she would realize she was short of things when staying at a hotel, and he worried she would find herself lacking her essentials when she was out there alone. What if she didn't have enough money while she was traveling? With that thought in mind, he sat by the swing and logged in to his bank account to transfer money to her.He didn't even know exactly how much he transferred. All he knew was that he'd pressed many zeroes—he was genuinely afraid of her getting into trouble out there. What Shawn didn't realize was that Noelle had never needed to depend on him for survival.A bank employee soon called him. "Your earlier transactions have all failed, Mr. Pitt."Shawn, on the verge of a breakdown, lost his usual composure. He asked, "Is it because of the amount and the number of transactions? I can verify that I'm the one who made th
