A few people present were quietly observing the little scandal. Maximilian's veins are bulging out of his neck and forehead. James stands up.
"What's going on here?"
"What's going on?!" Max is upset. "I'm here to fix my marriage and get back the woman who loves me! Or at least, who I believed loved me!"
"What did you say?!" Mariana gets to her feet as well, feeling the tremors returning once again.
"I came after you, Mariana. I came after you because I love you, and because I want us to be okay. But the first instant you find yourself free, you're already on a date with a complete stranger!"
"How dare-"
"I should have known. All those years of leaving you inside, keeping you from working, from having to sweat or leave those hands.... Oh, those beautiful hands intact.... It was all for nothing, wasn't it? Because that's your nature."
"You can't be serious!"
James watches everything in silence, shocked. Maximilian is red with anger.
"Of course I'm serious! I am speaking what my eyes are seeing, Mariana. You wanted me to be blind, didn't you? Or mute. You wanted me to be a... A submissive, emasculated man who did all your bidding!"
"An idiot, that's what you are, understand? A complete and total idiot!" Mariana feels the tears coming down her face again. "You were literally cheating on me with your secretary, you bastard, and I have no idea how long you've been doing it! And now you're standing there, accusing me of horrible things, when you're the bastard in that relationship!"
"Listen here-"
"I'm not going to listen to anything! You are the one who is going to listen to me, do you understand me? Three years ago, you told me that you would take care of me in sickness and in health, in wealth and in poverty, and that the only thing that would separate us would be death. You took an oath, not only before God, but before all who were gathered there. Do you remember that, Maximilian?!"
"I told you I made a mistake, Mariana. As soon as you left, the very second you left, I kicked Michelle out of my room! Not just from my room, but from my life. I was crazy, completely delusional, but I could see it all! You are the woman of my life!"
Mariana lets out a sarcastic laugh, but every note she utters is filled with pain. The people around don't even try to pretend that they are not completely engrossed in the midst of that bafflement.
"Okay, now I'm the woman in your life. After I found out your true face, right? Well, it's too late now."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You're lucky I'm not a vindictive person, you know, Max? Because I could destroy you right now. I could release such scandalous information to the wind that you would be arrested at the very least!"
Maximilian steps forward and puts up a cocked finger as he speaks to his hitherto wife:
"Not another word, do you hear me?"
"Or what?" Mariana, her voice shaky, raises her chin to pass superiority, though she is much smaller than her then-husband. "What are you going to do, huh? Come on, I want you to speak out loud and clear. I want everyone to hear who you really are. No more pretenses. No more masks!"
The man walks away. James, embarrassed yet serious, clears his throat and says:
"Listen, I know you are very nervous, but I urge you to calm down and talk to each other. All of this can be resolved with dialogue."
Both Mariana and Max look at the writer as if he has committed a sacrilege. James raises his hands in a soothing gesture, keeping his voice calm:
"I know it's hard, but you guys really need to get serious now. All the more so because-"
The girl widens her eyes and articulates the word "no" several times. She doesn't want Maximilian to know about the pregnancy.
James hesitates. Then he completes the sentence:
"All the more so because you've been together for a while, it's not like you've just met."
"Your lover speaks well, Mariana. It's even like he's rooting for us," the businessman mocks, cracking a huge sarcastic smile soon after.
"I'm not her lover. In fact, we met today."
Max's eyes are filled with fury.
"Then that makes it even worse. You haven't even had a chance to sleep with her to know if she's worth defending that much."
"That's enough now," Mariana murmurs, looking around. Some of the people are wide-eyed and dozing, but others seem to be enjoying themselves.
Yes, she had become a laughingstock. That tragedy happening before her eyes was being ENGAGED to the flock of vultures.
"That's what I get for believing in you, isn't it, Mariana? That's all I deserve for having loved every detail about you, of your body and your soul! For having believed that you would be mine, and mine alone, Mariana!"
"Shut your mouth!"
"Did you know that my whole family was against our marriage? Especially my mother. She kept trying to warn me of the headache you would give me in the future. She even said that if I didn't marry you, she would put me as her only heir! And I wouldn't have to share anything with Maxwell. Did you know that?!"
The girl can't say anything. Maximilian hated his brother, although he would never say why. To know that he chose him over revenge... She didn't know how she felt.
James tries to intervene, but is solemnly ignored. Max continues:
"All I wanted, my adored and beloved wife, was for us to be happy. I wanted you home, always beautiful and radiant, without stressing and without having to get into fights. I wanted you smiling, fulfilled! And I would do anything to keep everything exactly that way."
Mariana swallows dryly. She was so embarrassed, feeling so bad.
Her husband's voice becomes very different when he speaks again, almost as if the anger he was feeling totally changed his personality:
"I really thought you were different, you know? When we first met. You were never self-interested, you always knew your place, and you didn't challenge me. I really thought I had won the lottery. But that's your nature, isn't it? The nature of women."
The dark-haired girl can say absolutely nothing, overcome with grief at hearing such terrible things. He holds her face and caresses her, only to release her the next second and say:
"I guess I was too naive. You can't fight nature. At some point you had to give in to your own instincts, didn't you? Some time you'd have to give in to all that."
He pauses slightly, opening another cruel smile:
"You would have to give in to the emotional appeals that exist in your female subconscious and become the slut you've always been."
Mariana lets out a sob. That nightmare seemed to have no end. She hears a small sound of laughter in the background, probably from some teenager.
"That's right, Mariana. I came here to humiliate myself and ask for forgiveness, but I'm not going to do that "
Maximilian looks directly at James and blinks one of his eyes.
"After all, sluts don't deserve to be treated with respect."
The woman almost jumps back when, in an extremely quick and totally unpredictable momentum, James hits Max in the eye with a punch.
And the two begin to roll around on the floor, hitting each other.
Mariana is sitting on the huge double bed, where two huge suitcases, clothes, make-up items and some books rest. Drying another of her insistent tears, she puts a few more items in the suitcase on the right. How embarrassing she had been in that coffee shop! A few seconds after James and Maximiliano started punching each other, three employees of the place had to separate them, and the real fight only ended after they threatened to call the police.Max left the place, kicking a few tables and chairs. James escorted Mariana out of the place, and then hugged her and offered her his shoulder to cry until she couldn't take it anymore. He still hadn't given any sign of life. After talking some more, apologizing, and thanking James for the invitation, Mariana returned home feeling defeated. This episode was what she needed to make a decision. She had no more time to lose. The girl would never again be humiliated like that. No, Mariana would not allow anyone to treat her in such a cruel and
"Mariana?"The girl takes her eyes off the computer screen and looks at her colleague, Ruth, who holds a clipboard in her hands."Mr. Jones wants to talk to you."The girl snorts audibly."Really? What does he want?""I don't know. But he asked me to give you this message. After office hours, stop by his office a little bit.""Sure. Thanks, Ruth."The woman leaves to take care of her own business. Mariana tries to concentrate on the work in front of her, but can't.What did her boss want? Ever since she arrived in town and got the job, modesty aside, she was the most competent employee in that office. She was always on time, and when necessary, she stayed late to help another employee.Irritated, the woman frowned and grumbled:"This better be a promotion opportunity."When finally the digital clock on her desk showed her the time to leave, Mariana finished her activities, put on her coat, grabbed her purse, and instead of going straight home and taking a nice shower, she walked with
Mariana drums her fingers on the office table and stares at the blank screen, a sign of her fatigue and stress. Now that was an irony, since the office was in her home, and working indoors was supposed to be the appropriate solution to keep her calm.It had been a week since the terrible incident in Mr. Jones' office, and every time she remembered the look of sadness, shock, disgust, and death wish on her boss' face, she felt red with shame. That week's prenatal appointment was still coming up. Mariana didn't want to know the sex of the baby. Just knowing that he would be healthy, and that he would have a more dignified life than she herself had...The girl sighs. She gets up and goes to the garden to look at the flowers. Her mother had been much more generous than she had ever thought. When she told her what her scoundrel of an ex-husband had done, and the situation Mariana was in, she had made a point of letting her keep the property she used to rent. Now, besides having a job and
The first thing that goes through Mariana's mind is to just get up and walk away, without saying a single word. The second thing is to smile, wave and tell that old woman to go to hell, and then get up and walk away. But nervousness, confusion and hesitation cause the girl to simply stare for a few seconds before saying:"Hello," Mariana replies, trying to keep her composure, although her thoughts are racing. She observes the serene expression on Isabella's face. How had that woman found her? Although she is trying to remain calm, Mariana really wants to hold her by the collar of her blouse and shake her as she fills her with questions.Isabella smiles gently and says: "I hope you don't mind that I have kept my anonymity. I was concerned for my safety as well as yours in choosing this method. I have been following the difficult situation you are going through and felt it was time to intervene."Mariana frowns, still processing the revelation. She had a hard time believing that Isabe
Maxwell Philips looks at Mariana with a sarcastic smile on his lips. His cold, penetrating eyes seem to analyze her from top to bottom, as if he were studying an object of experiment."Surprised to see me here, sister-in-law?" he says, his voice laden with contempt.Mariana tries to disguise her disturbance at seeing Maxwell there. She knew that he hated Maximilian, but she couldn't fully understand his motives. Now, faced with this unexpected situation, her mind is filled with doubts and fears."What do you want, Maxwell?" she asks, struggling to maintain her composure.Maxwell takes a step closer, his eyes locked on hers. "I've come to offer a deal," he replies with a sinister tone. "You must have already spoken to my mother."Behind her, Isabella steps closer and places one hand on her waist."Well, son, you know I always try diplomacy before everything.""And we both know that Mariana has always preferred things the hard way, no?" he laughs, complicit.Feeling cornered, the girl s
Mariana cringes in the corner of the alley, trying to control her rapid breathing and stifle her sobbing sobs. She clings to the hope that the voices and footsteps she hears are not Maxwell's or Isabella's, but fear consumes her, and she cannot help but fear the worst. The noises become louder, indicating that people are approaching quickly. Mariana presses one hand against her mouth to hold back any sound that might betray her. Her heart beats strongly in her chest, and the tension increases with each second.Suddenly, a figure passes through the alley, and Mariana holds her breath. She cringes even more, trying to blend into the shadows, hoping she won't be seen. The footsteps stop very close to her hiding place, and the girl closes her eyes, expecting the worst."Did you see anyone running around here?" a male voice asks."No, I didn't see anyone," replies another, female voice. "It was probably just our imagination. This alley is kind of dark and it gives you the creeps."Mariana
"I don't like it, Mariana." Walking beside her was James, the man who met her the day the girl discovered the betrayal; the man who had saved her life. He repeats with more emphasis:"I don't like it at all!""I know, James, I don't either. But believe me, it's the only way.""Mariana-""It's going to be all right.""How is it going to be okay? Because out of the blue your ex-mother-in-law and your ex-brother-in-law want to get close to you? You told me yourself that-""Yes, James, but you have to trust me. I know what I'm doing, nothing bad is going to happen to me.""If nothing bad is going to happen to you, then why did you feel obligated to bring me in as a witness?"Mariana stops walking. The two are minutes away from arriving at the park, the location of the arranged meeting between Mariana, Isabella and Maxwell."You trust me?"I-""Do you or don't you?"Overcome by fatigue, James sighs deeply before answering:"Yes.""Thank you."Mariana gives her friend a tight hug. The two
Alone inside the huge and increasingly lonely house, the businessman Maximilian Philips, lying on the floor with a bottle of whiskey beside him, looks up at the ceiling. The chandelier is radiant, imposing, and in itself already demonstrates a luxury that the man had once made a point of boasting. But now, what was it but a handful of cut glass with light bulbs inside?Max takes another sip of whiskey. The new maid, Lanis, knocks twice on the door before entering;"Mr. Philips, you have a visitor."Send them away," he retorts. His voice is pasty from excessive alcohol consumption."But, Mister Phillips, it's a-""I've already sent away!""Yes, sir."Of course, after the divorce, women in love with him, who had always desired him and sighed when he passed through the halls, would go after him like bees go for honey. But Maximilian wanted none of them. The drone had lost its queen bee. And worse: because of his own malfeasance.Staggering, Max stood up and took six long sips from the bo
