Chapter 2 The Cruel Moon Goddess

CLARA'S POV

"Can someone please call the fashion police?" Melissa said as she burst into an exaggerated laugh the moment she set eyes on me right in the middle of the crowd.

Looking at her, one would see the clear difference of our treatments.

She wore a shiny golden low cut dress that had its slit drawn all the way to her thigh. It fitted perfectly well on her as it revealed every inch of her curves. She had been laughing until she intentionally fell into Kent's arms, leaning in to whisper in his ears.

"Look what the cat dragged in, a fugitive in our midst!!!" She declared.

The near stony expression on Kent's face was rather strange. It seemed like he was trying hard not to laugh and had his lips in between an upturned smile and a stony stiffness. Kent happened to be the most handsome boy I had ever laid eyes on in my life and there was more. He was our future Alpha, captain of the football team, and the boyfriend to Melissa. Man, he had me nearly mesmerized each time I lay my eyes on him and just now, I stood still staring at him.

"Clara, you idiot!!! What are you looking at?" Melissa's cruel voice brought me back to reality as she noticed that I was staring at her man. Her reaction seemed to embarrass Kent. He carefully moved his gaze from her and stared nervously at his toes.

This was certainly unlike the Kent we all knew. What happen?

One of her cronies who stood beside her stared off towards me. I recognized the mean girl from all the times I had been humiliated. I expected nothing less from her right now as she looked at me like I was some garbage she had found along the way.

"Oh my God, Clara. I doubt you know how to read. Didn't you understand what they meant when they declared the dress code to be formal?" She asked me sneeringly as she looked at me.

"It also says on the invitation, 'ladies and gentlemen' I did not see a part for bullies or did I miss that?" I asked, pretending to be surprised as I turned to look at them now. "Don't you know those words?"

"How dare you?!!" Melissa spat out angrily as she walked in front of me. She grabbed a cocktail from a nearby table. I had not anticipated her next move when she upturned its content over my head. "Get lost!!! We don't welcome bastards here."

Seeing her set the pace for the upper hand, Melissa's cronies took the forefront of my humiliation as I stood looking myself over.

"Neither do we accommodate dirty things covered with fleas!!!"

"Your father should have taken you with him when he chose to fall in that trap!!!"

"You're pathetic!!!" They spat their cruel words at me.

I did not want to be called raccoon eyes when the drink ruined my eyeliner, so I raised my head up and glared hard at them. Tears were threatening to flow from my eyes already.

Ding! Ding!! Ding!!!

The sound of the auditorium bell suddenly rang and I grew expectant. Nine more rings and I would welcome my 18th birthday and mate.

It was at this point that a hand suddenly pushed Melissa aside, the cocktail glass falling from her hand with a loud noise as its glass shattered all over the space causing gasps to emit from the onlookers.

"How could it be you?!!!"

He stood before me after asking the question. He glared really hard at me.

Kent seemed really scared by what he had just done and even more, abashed as he stared at me. His pupils seemed to dilate to their maximum while I stared directly at his eyes. I could see the reflection of my disheveled self right in his eyes as the goosebumps spread around my spine with the realization of what was happening.

Melissa had found her footing as she glared at him really hard.

"What are you doing?" She demanded and then it struck her as to what was happening. She put her hand over her mouth as she attempted to drown her shock.

Kent in the meantime was getting over his bewilderment and started to see how serious the situation seemed. He turned to look at her helplessly.

I wanted him to look at me just to be certain that I was not dreaming but he was already stuttering.

"Babe... I...she..." He could not find the right words to express himself.

"What?" Melissa demanded angrily.

Around us, there were sudden murmurs between the students as everyone seemed to be keying in with the current situation of things. I had become the center of attraction right now. Their voices spoke in whispers about what they were making of the situation. I gasped now and looked at Melissa.

"I am Kent's mate." I stated.

The moment I spoke those words, my heart increased in its tempo. I could hear my blood in my ears pumping faster. It was nearly like I was losing grip of myself and would probably die right on the spot.

Upon hearing my words, Melissa grew pale instantly.

"That's impossible!!! There must be a mistake somewhere!!!" She screamed, shaking her head which caused her hair that had been pinned up in the most perfect way to fall down and scatter around her.

Melissa seemed to keep shaking her head like that was what was going to stop this reality from happening. However, I stood there and turned now to Kent as all decisions were his own to make. He held the crowd at bay as I anticipated him to acknowledge me as his mate. Time was ticking gradually and he had said absolutely nothing to me.

When he eventually spoke up, those words came with the sting of a double edged sword.

"I cannot accept you as my mate because my heart belongs to Melissa. I shall not be conformed to being in a union with a traitor's child." He said the words as he turned to take Melissa's hand and led her inside.

I, Kent Smith, reject Clara Silver as my mate!

There I stood as the crowd walked around me, my world fell apart.

The moon goddess was indeed cruel.
