Calix’s POV.
“Land ho!!” the lookout man hollered. I closed the compass in my hand and brought out my spyglass, a peep through the device showed a town on top of a hill. Tyr, home sweet home. “Prepare for anchor!” I instructed the men as I walked down the main deck. “Prepare the lines and put out the fender. I want all hands on deck!” “Aye, Aye, Captain!” the men chorused. The sounds of ropes being coiled and sails getting stowed filled the air. My hands clasped behind my back, I strode to the quarterdeck, to Han steering the ship. “How is she?” I asked. “She is steady, no worries about her listing or swaying. And according to my calculations, we should be in Tyr in two hours and that’s at dusk,” he replied and I patted his back. Han was my beta and best friend, we have explored the world together. My gaze darted to the gray hump on the horizon, Tyr, my place of birth. It's been two decades since I set my eyes on it, two decades since that night which has left a scar on my heart. Exhaling, I glanced about the ship’s decks and saw her, she was leaning on the rail and stared at the sea. “Am I interrupting something?” I asked as I stopped behind her. Leia tilted her head and saw me, a smile spilled on her lips. She straightened from the railings. “No, you’re not,” she said. Covering the distance between us, I joined her at the bow of the ship. In the silence that ensued, we both stared at the mesmerizing blue before us. I brought back my stare at my cousin and noticed she was gloomy. “Home sweet home, huh?” I said, hoping to cheer her up. Leia brought back her gaze on me. “I heard they are throwing a welcome party for you.” “For us,” I corrected. Leia dragged a breath and resumed staring at the sea. “I do not think it's a bright idea coming back to Tyr after all these years” she paused briefly and fidgeted with her fingers. “Coming back to Tyr would reopen wounds, Calix, wounds I am afraid hasn’t healed properly.” I fought back the tears as gory images of that night flooded my head. The screams still torment me, but it's the sight of my father's head as it rolled on the floor that has left me reliving that moment over and over again. “We dock at dusk.” I changed topics and turned to leave. “Have you forgotten how you suffered, the nights you woke up screaming and asking for your father? You want revenge, don’t you?” she asked. “-That’s why you are here, to avenge your father’s death, isn’t it?” My hands clenching to fists, I turned around and looked at my cousin. “Like I said, we’re here because our people needs us, moreover it’s been decades since the incident of that night and I’m not that little boy anymore. And what if I seek revenge? That shouldn’t trouble you.” “Perhaps you have forgotten how one man wreaked havoc on the whole of Tyr, the people suffered and the town experienced a major set back. What if he strikes back?” My eyes changed into green and a loud growl tore my lips. I gripped her neck and pinned her to the railings behind. “Do not ever tell me this again. If he ever strikes back, Alpha Thane or whatever they call him, I will make sure that him and his pack suffer threefold the havoc he wreaked on Tyr.” I finished and let go of her, just as my eyes flickered into its usual brown. Leia coughed on the floor. “I’m sorry.” I muttered and walked out of the bow area of the ship, back to the quarterdeck where I took over the wheels from Han. Exactly at the first tinge of dusk, our ship arrived at the port of Tyr. The people came out in masses and welcomed us. Glancing one more time at Leia, I climbed down the ship and walked to the child holding out a bouquet for me. “Your Grace, we welcome you back to Tyr, thank you for honoring our invitation. Please, accept these flowers as a sign of our solidarity and unwavering love for his majesty,” she finished and handed over the flowers to me. A round of applause rang on the port as I straightened and waved at the people gathered. Tyr is bordered by tall mountains. I feel a pair of eyes on me and when I looked up at a secluded part of the mountain, I find a woman standing there and looking at me. She was wearing a black dress and her grey hair was braided into two like a bull’s horn. Whoever she was, startled as our eyes met and hurried back inside the cave behind her. “Who is that?” Han asked and came standing next to me. He must have seen the haggard lady. “I don’t know,” I replied, “Whoever it is likes her distance and doesn’t mingle with the crowd.” I said and looked at my beta. I proceeded to the gathering before me. Tyr was just as I remembered, even though it's been two decades since I left, evidence that this town indeed suffered a major setback after that night. Once in a while, I’d look over my shoulders to make sure Leia is following through, she’s the only family I’ve got left and it is my duty to keep her safe, even though she can be annoying at times. We arrived in Tyr to a banquet waiting for us. There was a lot of dancing and enough booze to intoxicate even the strongest of shifter. Not me, as I laughed at the people wrestling playfully on the grounds. Soon, the children were sent away and the scenery turned sensual as a dozen of skimpily dressed ladies stepped forward and danced under the moonlight. Soon, some men joined them and they kissed and fondled. Han who was seated by my righthand, chuckled and joined them. Leia dragged a breath. “I will like to retire for the night,” she said and jerked to her feet, just as a middle-aged woman stepped forward. “This way, My Lady,” she said and led Leia away. “Family can sometimes be a pain in the as$,” someone said and I tilted at the voice. It was him, my father's best-friend. “Mr. Westley!” I jerked to my feet. He bowed and straightened as I stepped forward and pulled him into a hug. “It’s so good to see you.” I said as we straightened. “Sorry I was not around to welcome you, I went to inspect the crops at our farmlands.” “You’re still a farmer after all these years,” I said. “Of course, farming is the only language I understand. You should come around and see for yourself, the crops are growing bountifully. This may be out best season yet at agriculture,” he said. We sat down as a maiden served him his food. If it wasn't for Mr. Westley, I wouldn’t have left the shores of Tyr. The morning after the invasion, he’d single-handedly written to my maternal colony and the next morning they were here to pick me up. A prince of two very different kinds. While my father was a werewolf, my mother on the other hand was a lycan. A lycan queen who’d fallen in-love with a traveler she met in Cathena while on a business trip. A lot of people confuse werewolves and lycans, but these are two very different kinds with the later being more powerful. This was the reason my father separated from my mother, he couldn’t endure her dominant traits and ended whatever it is they had, shortly after she realized she was pregnant. As it is in the world of shifters, if two different kinds meet and produce a young, the young shall take after the traits of the dominant shifter. Hence, if a werewolf and a lycan mates, their young one shall be a lycan, and if a werewolf and a human should mate, their offspring shall become a werewolf even though addressed as hybrids by the society. Mr. Westley ate his food while I moved my gaze to the adults dancing in the arena. Han was dancing with a red-haired and waved as our gaze met. “Who is that?” Mr. Wesley asked. “That’s Han, my beta.” “Let me guess, he’s a lycan?” he asked. “Yes, Han was the first friend I made when I arrived Nirian, his father was a chef in my mother’s castle. We have become inseparable over the years and after I took over as alpha, I made him my beta,” I explained and glanced at Mr. Westley. The man smiled and nodded. “Even without you telling me I knew he was your beta, I can almost smell the alpha-beta bond between you two. Such a bond is priceless and should be cherished,” he said. “Thank you.” I said. We resumed staring at the people dancing. Mr. Westley downed glass after glass of wines and laughed heartily. I glanced at the man, and wondered what sad life he must have lived without a mate. That makes me wonder if I’d suffer the same fate as him after going this far in life and yet not being able to find my mate. What if I’m mateless? What if I belong to the 1% of the shifter population who spend their lives alone without anyone to call their own... Reaching for my glass on the table, I downed its entire contents and jerked to my feet. “I would like to retire for the night,” I said. A woman walked to Mr. Westley and whispered something to his ears. He smiled. “It seems they have a surprise waiting for you.” Mr. Wesley emptied his glass and lurched to his feet. “Come with me, My Lord.” The walk from the arena to the castle was a short one. While at the gates as the guards raised the portcullis, I waited for the moment the scenes of that night will flash my head and torment me, but they don’t. Instead, the gates come open and a smile spills on my lips. Perhaps it is the sight of the renovated castle and the fact that it's been two decades since that fateful incident. “Alpha Calix!” I heard my name from behind. We turned around and sighted my beta running from the distance. Han puffed. “One minute you’re at the table, one minute I turn around and you are gone,” he said. “I’m sorry, Han. I was exhausted and wished to retire for the night. Mr. Westley here has decided to show me my place of rest, I didn't want to bother you.” The two exchanged a handshake and when I looked further, I saw the red-haired hiding behind a carriage. I smiled. “Go ahead, Han. I will see you in the morning,” I patted my best friend and headed inside the mansion. Why do I feel the maids pouring colorful petals on the floor as I walked down the hallways of the castle, is not the surprise Mr. Westley is talking about? We arrived at the last floor of the castle and Mr. Westley stopped before the second door. “Have a good night,” he said, turned and left. Curiosity rippling my expression, I pushed open the door before me, and what I see leaves me grinning from ear to ear.Warning! This chapter contains mature content, readers' discretion is advised. Calix’s POV. I walked into the room to the sight of two skimpily dressed ladies sprawled on the bed; a brunette and blonde. “Hello alpha,” the blonde said. “You’re welcome, my lord,” the brunette said. I closed the door behind me just as they seductively climbed down from the bed and walked to me. “Hello, ladies!” I said. “I’m Sara and this here is Fienna,” the blonde said pointing to the brunette. “Nice to make your acquaintances. Well, my name is-” “Alpha Calix, the Alpha of all alphas,” the brunette said. “Your reputation precedes you, my lord,” the blonde added. Smiling, the ladies turned to each other and kissed, at first languidly and then increasing the tempo setting the mood for tonight. “Come, Alpha Calix. We would like to entertain you specially tonight.” I allowed them lead me to a couch opposite the bed. “Please, sit
Emily’s POV. The air smelled of salt and cedarwood, blending with the fragrances of the flowers hung on the walls. I tried to read the book in my hands, but my thoughts were disjointed, images from my nightmares flashed in my head and I shut the book. It's been hours since we left the shores of Azalea, hours since I left the main deck of the Great Carrack, and joined my mother in the great cabin. Exhaling, my gaze darted across the windows, to my father and his men working tirelessly under the afternoon sun. “Would you care for some tea?” my mother's gentle voice cut through the atmosphere. We were seated on a couch near the windows. At my mother's question, I straightened on the couch and nodded. “Yes, please,” I replied. A smile lighting Queen Larissa’s expression, she turned and signaled the servant with us in the room and I was served tea. “Thank you,” I mumbled and took some sips. “So, did you feel it last nig
Emily’s POV. My legs were swift as I ran through the forest that bordered the hamlet, tears seeped from my eyes and cascaded down my face. I want to make it stop, the pain that glided down my throat and twisted my stomach, but I couldn’t. I could still see my father’s face, the disappointment etched on his face, and the fact he left without saying goodbye. The soles of my shoes pounded against the forest floor and splashed mud up my feet. My breaths, ragged and frantic lurched in my throat as the tears blurred my vision. I can barely see where I was going but I pressed on, each step taking me away to an unknown destination. My thirst for solitude burned through my nerves. All around me was calm and still, the forest a quiet sanctuary of life and light. The golden rays of the afternoon sun filtered through the thick canopy of leaves above, casting a warm, dappled glow onto the forest floor. The trees stood tall and ancient, their trunks r
Emily’s POV. My heart ached as though he took a part of me with him, the thought of never seeing him again rippled me into unequal halves. His scent still hung in the air; that intoxicating smell of musk and honey. His face was engraved in my heart; his beautiful brown eyes and how they looked at me with zest and something primal. His wet hair and how they clung to his face. There was no denying the desires I felt for him, no denying the fact that he felt them too– everything that coursed between us, unspoken but palpable How his hands moved so delicately but with ferocity on my skin, setting wildfires I never knew existed. The heat between us had been undeniable, a magnetic pull that neither of us could resist yet he’d left without a goodbye, just like my father. A cold reminder that I was utterly alone on this settlement. Slowly, I gathered myself off the floor and staggered, my gaze fixated on the trail of his footprints on the sand. The wind whipped m
Calix’s POV. Mate! The world around me stood at a standstill as I watched her from atop the cliff, under the blazing afternoon sun. A butterfly fluttered in her face and she brought forward her hand and it perched on her. The innocence when she smiled and talked to the little creature tugged my heart with warmth. She is kind and beautiful. More than anything, I wanted to stay back and watch her. I could watch her all day and not get tired, but not today. I am on a mission. I am out for the head of my enemy and nothing is going to hold me back. So with one last glance at my mate, I reined my horse in the other direction as I prepared for the descent down the cliff, only to hear my mate scream. It is with shock that I flung around and searched for her and she was no more on the bridge. Where did she go? Adrenaline coursed through my veins as I scanned the perimeter for her and I noticed a grapple in the rive
Calix’s POV. Just like last night, they climbed down from the bed and seductively walked to me. I’d forgotten they were here– perhaps, didn't expect them to still be here after last night’s escapade. This morning after Mr. Westley relayed to me the news of Alpha Thane’s voyage to Cathena, I’d ordered for my horse and cloak right there in the courtyard and hadn't bothered re-entering the castle. Amidst the protests of my cousin and beta, had mounted my horse and set for Cathena. According to Leia, going after Alpha Thane is a bad idea while Han on the other hand, wanted to come with me. In all, my mind was made up. I was going after Alpha Thane and I was going alone. I was already looking forward to his head in my hands, not knowing of the perfect distraction the moon goddess’d planted for me out there on the cliff– the sight of my mate. Was it fate that she’d suddenly fallen into water? I could still see those blue eyes and how they stared into my soul,
Emily’s POV. Something cold and wet landed all over my body. “Wake up!! Who said you can oversleep here?!” the clatter of two metals that followed keyed me into further panic. I jolted awake, rolled on the small bed and fell with a thud on the floor. A small cry left my lips, but I quickly recollected myself off the floor and staggered. My gaze settled on the scowling face of my host as she continued to clatter the metals to my face and then stopped. “That will be the last time I wake you up, Emily Blakesley. Here, we rise before the sun even hints at the horizon. Am I clear? Have I made myself clear?!” she barked. “Y-yes, ma’am,” I stammered. “Good.” She turned and gave the metals to someone else in the room. For the first time, I noticed two women with us in the room, one was holding a bucket which dangled in her hand perhaps to emphasize on what she’d just done. “Strip.” My host ordered. Without even blinking, I peeled the wet dress off my body and stood, naked,
Emily’s POV. My eyes fluttered open. I jerked to a sitting as my gaze settled on the chubby figure of Madame Severine. “How are you feeling?” she asked, shuffling further into the room. “I am feeling better,” I lied. With those hawkish eyes, she scrutinized me. A smile touched her lips but it quickly morphed into a frown. “Is it true, that you refused to eat?” she questioned, her voice dripped with derision. “I-I’m not hungry,” I stuttered and avoided her gaze. She scoffed and stepped away. “Suit yourself. Remember to wake up early tomorrow, early to bed early to rise.” She stopped and glanced at me, and then climbed into her bed. It was a matter of time and her snores filled the room. Gently, I laid down on my bed and dragged my gaze across the open window, as the sky darkened into full-blown nighttime. A howl broke out in the air– Randolph and the men patroll
Emily’s POV. As soon as he left, servants scurried into the room and cleaned up the mess of the broken bottle—they took away the wine glasses, table, and chairs, and I was left alone again. My legs buckled and I dropped to the floor with a soft thud, my gown forming a loop around me. At last, the tears found their way, pouring like soap from my eyes and soaking my clothes; the more I wiped them, the more they came in torrents. A howl filled the air. Sniffling, I gazed up at the night sky, recognizing who it was. There was so much sadness laced in that cry, that broke my heart. Another howl broke into the air and I jerked to my feet. I scurried to the window and gazed at the courtyard below, hoping to get a glimpse of his lycanthrope, but all I was met with was foreboding darkness. He was gone and headed off to goddess knows where. An ache pushing my heart, I plummeted to the floor again and rested my head on the ledge of the window. He has been gone only for an hour yet, I mi
Calix’s POV. She didn't believe me. No matter how hard I tried to explain things to her, she refused to believe me. The weight of her accusation crashed through me, twisting into waves of fury. I strode out of the room and pranced down the hallways of the castle, my hands clenched into fists as I battled to keep myself from shifting. Not here...I told myself, the sight of me was already terrifying enough to the servants who scurried away into hiding as I approached. I need not terrify them with the presence of my lycanthrope. As for my beta, Han, luckily for me, he’s retired for the day, so there was no one to bombard me with questions about why my dinner suddenly ended. Arriving at a corner, my mate’s voice resounded in my head. “Stop lying!” I slammed my fist into the wall, the force rattling the stone and spraying specks of dust onto the floor and my shoes. Why does she think I’m lying? Do I come off to her as a lowlife who would try to manipulate her with falsehoods?
Emily’s POV. Adrenaline shot through every nerve in my body. I stared at the door, wondering who it was this time around, holding onto whatever that was left of my sanity. The tall portal swung open and absolutely no one but my mate strode into the room. A sigh of relief escaped my lips. It's fascinating that someone who brought chaos of my life was capable of bringing me so much peace and comfort. Just a single gaze at him, I melted with warmth for him and a soothing calm washed over me. My heart accelerating on its own volition, I watched him linger at the door as though held in a trance at the sight birthed before him– at the sight of me. “You look gorgeous, angelic, breathtaking,” he said. All three words just to describe me? I blushed terribly and fought to hold his gaze. A tomato couldn't compete with how red I became. “Thank you,” I said and lowered my gaze to my dampened fingers. He strode to me and brought forward his hand. “Would you give
Calix’s POV. I sipped from my glass and continued staring across the open window of the castle’s living room. I tried not to think about her words this evening– the fact she tried to remind me about her rejection in the forest of Cathena. I understood she rejected me then so she can escape, she didn't mean any of those words. I can tell by whenever I held her in my arms—how her heart beat fast and her breath hitch. She longs for me as much as I longed for her. “A few days ago, more than anything you wanted nothing to do with her,” Han reminded and pulled me out of my thoughts. “What changed?” he asked. “You should ask the moon goddess,” I replied and turned around. My gaze fell on my beta standing in the middle of the room also holding a wine glass in his hand. “I have never seen you this happy, my lord,” he hinted. Shrugging, I gulped a mouthful of my drink. “Isn’t that what our mate is for? To complete and make us happy,” I said.
Emily’s POV. Reopening my eyes, I flung myself around and my gaze fell on him standing behind me. My cheeks flushed with embarrassment as I realized I’d been caught sniffing his clothes. “N-no, you’re not,” I stuttered, suddenly unable to hold his gaze. It wasn’t until I looked up and into his eyes that I found them darkened with something primal–something I dared not to say. The room charged with something unruly and sizzling, as he crossed over to me and stopped. “Are you sure?” he asked, even his voice was now husky. I swallowed and nodded. Holding his gaze burned me with the desire to throw myself into his arms and crush his lips with mine; those full succulent lips. I could only imagine what it’d feel like to have them move over mine, to have them trail wet kisses down my neck. Damn it! Wetness pooled more and more in my underwear. “Yes,” I answered when I finally found my voice and looked away. “You know, if there’s anything you need, you can as well tell me.” “
Emily’s POV. It all started when he ended the kiss, strode out of the room, and shut the door behind him. My knees buckled, and I sank to the floor. Fresh tears filled my eyes as it dawned on me—I would never be accepted. Nobody seemed to care about how I felt; how their words cut into me, or how their actions sent me into a spiral of despair. Sobbing quietly, I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to hold myself together but his scent lingered in the air, a cruel reminder of the mate bond that should have been my solace but instead, has become my torment. Is that why he haunted me in my dreams? And stabbed my wolf? “Do you think I have not heard the rumors about your mentally unstable self! Who do you think would be stupid enough to want a wolfless girl for a mate?!” his words at the riverbank echoed in my head. Regardless, I stared at the door, half-expecting him to come back and tell me he’d made a mistake, to hold me, and erase all the pain he’d inflicted on me. But he n
Calix’s POV. A mixture of shock and fear ballooned inside me as I took in the broken earthenwares, the flipped-over mattresses, and the torn bedsheets scattered about the place. My gaze traveled over the droplets of blood on the floor, and the incoherent writings on the wall. But none of these bothered me as the sight of my mate hurdled in a corner laughing at herself, her hair was disheveled, and her hands streaked with blood and grime as she clutched a knife. “By the stars and shadows! Somebody stop her!” Mr. Westley clamored. My lungs struggled for air, my heart pounding in uneven, frantic beats as Han and the guards behind me scooted forward and soon, were upon her. They wrestled with her, wrung the knife from her hands, and pinned her to the floor. “Quick! Get some chains and keep her restrained before she harms someone!” Mr. Westley clamored again. Words failed me. I watched as Han hurried out of the room and my gaze was back on my mate– this wasn’t the girl I kissed so
Calix’s POV. The desire to rip off my clothes and shift into my lycanthrope rippled through me as I strode out of the sick bay and shut the door after me. Gnashing my teeth, I leaned on the door and growled. I can’t believe I just kissed my enemy’s daughter, the one person I’d vowed to destroy. Dragging a breath, I signaled at the guards stationed at the door and while they locked it, I strode out of the hallway, hurried down the stairs, and soon hit the foyer. Proceeding to the terrace, I took a deep breath wishing I could flush out the intoxicating scent of her which seemed to follow me wherever I went. Sulking under my breath, I proceeded to the royal garden, to one of the white wooden benches, and sat. Fvck! How did I get to this point? All I wanted was to come back to Tyr, spend some time with my people, take revenge on the alpha who destroyed my home, and then go back to Nirian. Never did I see this coming, that I’d end up desiring; not in the littlest bit; the daug
Emily’s POV. In an endless, boundless, thick veil of darkness, I soared. Time didn't exist here, everything stood at a standstill. I floated, weightless, thoughtless, with no idea of where I was– Am I dead? And then my lashes fluttered open and I welcomed the sharp rays of an afternoon sun. A groan seeped out of my lips. Where am I? What happened to me? My throat was as dry as the desert and my vision was blurry. I shut my eyes again and when I reopened them, the room I was in blurred into focus. High stoned walls, a massive arched window, inset with diamond-shaped panes of leaded glass from which rays of the sunlight oozed, a wooden polished shelf on which stood vases of dried flowers, a mortar and pestle, forceps, scalpel, bone saw, hooks, and needles. There was a side stool just close to the small bed I’d woken in, and there were two other empty beds. The room had the faint scents of beeswax, herbs, and the lingering smoke from the hearth. Slowly, I tried to sit up an
