Emily’s POV.

It dawned on me it was all a facade, the warmth I’d seen moments ago in their eyes were nothing but a clever tool to fool me.

In despair, I watched them prowl towards me—their footsteps, slow and menacing as those of predators. A chill glided down my spine.

“You’ve been spoiled by the king, haven’t you?” Ivy sneered, her voice dripping with disdain. “Like all dreams, they come to an end.”

“He won’t keep you around forever,” Rose joined. “You’re nothing but a fleeting moment. An Azalean has no place in this castle certainly not as our queen and Luna!”

They covered the distance between us and glared at me. I clenched my jaw, refusing to let them see how much their cruelty unsettled me. They were as much the horrible people they were last night, foolish to have believed they could change overnight.

“Give me that!” Theresa snatched the necklace from my neck.

“Y–You didn't have to do that,” I stuttered. “You could have just asked me to remove th

Leia’s POV. He took my mate away from me, locked him up, and still had the effrontery to come to me last night. Climbing into my bed and faking a yawn was the least I could do to send him away. It was almost midnight and I needed some to time to myself, to finalize the rest of my plan. “Have a great night, Leia,” he said. “You too, Calix,” I replied. Immediately he was gone, I waited for a while just to make sure he was really gone, then clambered down from my bed and locked the door. Reaching under my pillow, I wore the nose mask, adjusting its straps behind my head, and then I reached under my bed and brought out the incense burner I’d stolen from the apothecary earlier today. Everyone believed I was behind the walls of my room, but I had them fooled. I was up and about, gathering things for my experiment tonight. I brought out the mortar and pestle, and then my purse. Carefully opening the purse, I brought some leaves of shadowthorn –a spiky, bla

Emily’s POV. Curiosity rippled through me as I watched her saunter into the room. She moved with the grace and poise of a queen, her gown flowing behind her like liquid silk. She had chestnut hair, and beautiful green eyes that scanned the room briefly before settling on me. Breath lodged in my throat as I saw something flicker in her eyes—annoyance? Resentment? Whichever it was, was quickly gone and replaced with a smile that felt obligatory rather than self-willed. Her gaze fixated on me, she rounded the table and sat in the chair opposite me, before dragging her gaze to Han and then Calix. “Good morning, everyone, cousin,” she said, her voice as steady as her gaze, as she straightened on the chair. I caught the subtle tightening of Calix’s jaw, before in return, he nodded, his demeanor suddenly as unreadable as hers. “Leia,” he greeted. “It's nice of you to finally join us,” he said. “Of course,” she said and her gaze drifted back to Han. “Han! Emily’s POV. More than anything, I wanted to remain in the solarium and enjoy the view of the lights—how they bounced off the glasses and shimmered across the room. But Calix had other places he wanted to show me. He offered me his hand and I took it, and he led me to another sight. A tiltyard. The expanse stretched to infinity, its sandy area flanked by rows of wooden stands. Spears and shields hung on display, their metals catching the afternoon sun. There were also embalmed heads and furs of wolves. “We hold tournaments here. Mostly ceremonial now, but in the past, there were several public competitions,” Calix explained. I tried to picture the auditorium filled with spectators, the clash of weapons echoing through the air. “Do you compete?” I asked, glancing at him. “The last time I was here and there was a competition, I was barely five. So, no–” he shook his head and smiled at me. “I didn't compete.” The last time he was here. Does this mean he had

Calix’s POV.A traitor in a pack was like a cankerworm if left unchecked, would burrow deeper into the foundation of the pack until all that was left was chaos. At my question, Han and I stared at each other just as a thought materialized in my head. Somehow, he read my thoughts and a gasp escaped his lips.“No! You don't think she can do that. Could she?” he asked. I raked my fingers through my hair.“I wouldn’t give her a pass, you saw how rude she was to my mate at breakfast. I need to have a word with her.” Walking past my beta, I headed down the stairs and soon stepped into the hallway leading to Leia’s room.I stopped briefly at her door, shuffled my furious self down, and knocked on the portal. Seconds turned into minutes, and there was no response.Glancing at Han, I knocked again, yet there was no sign of her. Where could she have gone? My mind reeled at the thought of anything bad happening to her.Just when I was to force the door open, she did first from the other end,

Emily’s POV. I didn't realize how exhausted I was until my back hit the bed. The next thing I knew, it was morning. “Good morning,” a voice said. Startled, I sat up on the bed and saw him sitting on the couch, casually reading a newspaper. A gasp escaped my lips as I glanced around, disoriented. “It’s morning?!” I murmured, mostly to myself than to him. “I didn’t know you were such a deep sleeper,” he said, his eyes fixated on the paper. “For a moment, I thought you’d slipped into a coma,” he added, not looking up. “I was exhausted,” I defended and slugged my feet out of bed. “You have no idea.” “Clearly. That explains why you snored all night, chasing sleep from my eyes.” “What?!” I gasped and lurched to my feet. “I? Snore?!” “Yes.” “I do not snore!” “Yes, you do. Or rather, you did,” he said, folding the newspaper and placing it on the couch beside him, and then he looked at me, holding back a smile. “But don’t worry. I’m still very much attracted to you,” he

Emily’s POV. Reluctantly, I took her hand and she gave me a gentle tug. “Come on! You will enjoy it!” she gingered. I rose to my feet and she steered us toward the door. They foyer opened up to us, the terrace, and lastly the courtyard. Letting go of my hand, Leia spread her arms, closed her eyes and inhaled the air. “Ah!” Smiling, she reopened her eyes and stared at me. “Nothing beats the morning’s fresh air,” she said. A faint smile touched my lips. I glanced around the courtyard; at the guards scattered about the place. Leia and I exchanged glances and resumed strolling down the pathway. We walked in companionable silence, the crisp morning air brushing against my skin. The courtyard was vast, as usual, lined with manicured hedges and blooming flowers in vibrant hues. The sunlight filtered through the high castle walls, casting a warm glow on the cobblestones. Leia led the way, her steps light and easy, while I couldn’t shake the tension lingering in my

Emily’s POV.In the moments following, I walked to the bed and threw myself in. I tried not to overthink it but recalling how I’ve been bullied by almost everyone lately—from Madame Severine to the handmaids, brought tears to my eyes. All of a sudden, the bedroom door came open and my mate walked into the room.“Bella?”I tried to wipe the tears but too late, he saw them. I sat up on the bed and a reticent smile played on my lips.“Hi... You’re back!” I stuttered.“Yes.” He shut the door behind him and stepped toward the bed. “I’m so sorry I had to leave without telling you. Something urgent came up and required my attention.”He covered the distance between us and cupped my face. His fingers brushed against my skin, sending warmth to my body. Closing my eyes, I reveled in the awe of his presence; letting his intoxicating scent soothe me.“Did anything happen while I was away?” he asked and I reopened my eyes.‘And who do you think he’d believe? A mad maiden or three loyal subjects?’

Emily’s POV. Han nodded and bolted out of the room and almost immediately a bell resonated through the walls of the castle. The already tense atmosphere of the laundry room became even more apprehensive. It seemed I was the only one in the room who didn't know what bell was ringing. Guards trooped into the room only then did Calix released his grip on the handmaids. Ivy collapsed on the floor, next to Rose, and both wheezed, coughing with bulging eyes. “Take them away, all three of them!” Calix commanded and the guards swung into action. “Please, my lord, please!” Theresa begged. They were bundled them out of the room and another deadening silence fell in the room. “Bella, is there anyone else in this room that has defied you?” Calix asked. His eyes were still glowing green but softened as he gazed at me. The rest of the servants in the room cowered at his question, they bowed their heads and avoided my gaze. But none of them has ever bullied me. “No.

Emily’s POV. My cheeks burned as I realized I’d just been caught ogling him. This shouldn’t be happening, I should still be mad at him for coming home with someone else’s scent on him. But Moon Goddess, how could one man be so devastatingly perfect? Those broad, powerful shoulders, the enticing dusting of hair across his sculpted chest, and the ridges of his abdomen, carved like the finest stone. And then, lower still, the weight of his masculinity—bold and imposing, a silent promise of strength. It was almost too much to take in, leaving me breathless and dazed. “I-I,” the words caught in my throat and refused to form. “What?” he asked, a teasing smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. “I’m still angry at you,” I finally said and looked away. His laughter reverberated throughout the room as I strolled to the window and gripped the ledge. More than anything, I wanted to go back to him and hit him hard on the chest, but the thought of standing so close to him with his me

Calix’s POV. At my command, Han had mind-linked the chauffeur and our carriage steered toward the castle’s gates. However, I glanced across the window and couldn’t comprehend the shocked expression on my mate’s face. Just moments ago, she was eager to spend time with my cousin and now that I was granting her heart’s desire, she was acting shocked? Facade. It was all a facade, I guess. Our carriage continued past the castle’s portcullis and rode down the drawbridge. “Do you have any special place in mind for visiting?” Han asked, breaking the silence that’d followed in the carriage. “Let's just ride around the town for now,” I said. “I just need to see the people and how they’re going about their day.” I glanced at Han, and he was holding in a laugh. “Spill it.” “Did you suddenly remember your people after a little friction with your mate?” he teased. “You’re impossible!” I rasped and he laughed. But he was right though. Since I arrived at Tyr, I’d been engrosse

Calix’s POV A faint breeze swept through the battleground as Han and I descended from our carriage. My gaze settled on my mate, and Leia disembarking from theirs. Their laughter echoed softly across the grounds, the easy camaraderie between them igniting an all-too-familiar sting of jealousy in my chest. I tried to ignore the way Emily leaned closer to Leia as they exchanged words, their expressions effervescent. The sight tightened the knot of frustration coiling up inside me. “Do you think something is going on between those two?” Han whispered, glancing at me. “Not in the way you’re insinuating,” I snapped, though the uncertainty in my own voice betrayed me. “Then what is it?” Han pressed on. “Because I’ll be honest, it feels like they’re hiding something. Something big.” “Obviously, there’s something they know that we don’t,” I replied and glanced at my beta. Han frowned, his brows pulling closely as he stared back at me. “Do you think it’s about Leia’s

Emily’s POV. The sun dipped low in the sky as we arrived at the castle, casting long shadows across the courtyard. The air was tinged with the coolness of dusk, and a light breeze rustled the banners hanging from the castle walls. Our carriage halted before the grand terrace and Calix stepped out first, his movements fluid and commanding. He turned to me and offered me his hand. A smile tugging at my lips, I took his hand and he helped me down the carriage. We proceeded to the dining hall and settled down to a sumptuous dinner, after which Calix and I steered upstairs to our room. “Please sit.” Calix gestured at the couch. He disappeared into the washroom and came out with a remedy box. “Allow me,” he said, and took my bruised arm. His touch was gentle as he cleaned the wound, his focus unwavering. “What was that in the morning?” he asked, breaking the silence that’d followed. “Why did you suddenly ask to ride with Leia?” He tried to hide it, but there were traces o

Emily’s POV. “I’d like to ride with Lady Leia—alone,” I said, and an awkward silence fell in the courtyard, just like the other day in the dining hall. “What?” Leia gasped, staring at me as though I'd grown an extra head. Han’s eyes were as wide as meatballs and Calix stiffened—his gaze flickering suspiciously between Leia and me. “Yes, thank you.” I offered them a warm smile and took the footman’s hand, stepping gracefully into the carriage. I settled into my seat and then popped my head through the window. “Are you coming, Lady Leia?” She glanced at Calix as though seeking his permission to proceed, and then gulping, she gazed at me and smiled. “Of course, Your Highness.” She joined me in the carriage and the footman shut the door. Across the window, Calix and Han continued to gaze at me even as I tapped the carriage and the chauffeur moved forward the carriage. Moments later, Leia and I exchanged a quiet glance as the three carriages came to a brief stop at the castle

Emily’s POV. A shiver charred down my spine at his command. It wasn’t just his words but the way his eyes darkened as he stared at me; reminding me of how he pleasured me this morning by the window. I was wearing two-piece sleepwear made from expensive silk. The top was a sleeveless chemise of a pale ivory hue. Its neckline was adorned with delicate lace and small embroidered flowers in white and gold thread. The second half was a matching silk skirt. It was long and flowing, with a subtle shimmer that caught the dim light of the room. The waistband rested gently on my hips and was secured by a silk drawstring that flowed into soft pleats beyond my knees. Slowly, I slipped the top over my head, the soft material gliding down my arms before I dropped it on the bed. Calix’s gaze widened slightly, his dark eyes trailing over the sight of my bare skin. When his gaze lingered on my brea, sts, his jaw tightened, and a faint flush crept up his neck. He glanced away for a mom

Emily’s POV. Dawn came earlier than I anticipated, rays of the morning sun seeped through the windows and landed on my face. A groan escaped my lips. I tried to move, but my body felt heavy, like it didn’t belong to me. “Hello, bella.” My eyes fluttered open and I caught sight of Calix staring down at me at the foot of the bed. “I- I can’t move my body!” He chuckled. “Are you sure you can train today? We could reschedule,” he said, his voice laced with concern and amusement. “No! We’re not rescheduling anything. I-can-do-this.” I said each word as I forced myself to sit up on the bed. Calix watched me amusingly and shook his head. “You can be stubborn. We’re rescheduling; You can barely move!” I eyed him and groaned as a dull pain rippled through my waist. “I’ve told you, no rescheduling,” I rasped. For the first time, I noticed he was already dressed up for today, wearing a pair of dark-blue breeches to match with a white tunic and black boot

Leia’s POV. The castle was shrouded in midnight’s silence. Everyone has retired to their chambers—my cousin and his mate too. Slowly, I stepped out of my room and quietly shut the door after me. My cloak billowed after me as I hurried down the hallways of the castle, clutching tight the incense burner in my hands. Footsteps inched closer and I dodged, stepping into the shadows of a close-by alcove. Two guards strolled past, their voices low as they patrolled the area. Heaving a sigh, I stepped out from my hiding and continued in my tracks, doubling my steps. I arrived at the royal kitchen and stuffed enough fruits and bread in my pockets, and also refilled my water can. Again, footsteps inched towards me. Quickly gathering my things, I ducked behind an inbuilt shelf. It was a chef. He rummaged through the counters and sighed. “There you are!” He picked up a blue mug and glanced around the kitchen suspiciously. I pressed myself further into the shelf, stilli

Emily’s POV. Leia led me to a raised platform on the center of the battleground. “We shall kickstart your training with some stretching” she explained. Striding to the center of the ring, she began to stretch; lunges, squats, sideways bends, and I tried to copy her. At first, my muscles snapped and hurt unfamiliar with such movements, but I pushed on. “Good. You’ve got more grace than I expected, but grace alone won’t save you in a battle,” Leia explained. “Our next step is jogging,” she explained. “We’re going to run around the arena five times,” she explained and took the lead. At first, I thought it was simple, not until we completed our second lap and headed for the third. My calves burned, my breaths came in short and ragged as I stumbled after Leia. “Stop!” Leia instructed and I didn’t hesitate to halt in my tracks, leaning forward with my hands on my knees as I struggled to catch my breath. “To be able to control
