I stood by the door, not saying a word. Her words got to me. Two years ago when she had killed them. Two years ago when she had taken them away from me. Two years ago when she became a murderer.

For a long time during those two years, I hated my father for giving her such a short sentence. I would have made sure she had rotted in jail for what she had done. She would have died along with them but now she was claiming I hadn't believed her.

Without turning to face her, I whispered. “Two years ago, you ruined my life, Astrid.” The words had to be my undoing and I was instantly transported back to that very day.
