Prologue: The Little Red Among Rabid Wolves

Prologue: The Little Red Among Rabid Wolves

The County Fair, Unknown City, Unknown State....(2001)

Unimpeded ruckus filled the background as twisting metal swirled and twirled in the distance as many a machine got a good work out due to the numerous rows of people all huddled together in single lines barely able to keep the shape as many a man and woman stood amid the heat of the beaming golden rays of the afternoon sun both excited and impatient at the same time. There were attendees of all shapes and sizes, big, small, surprisingly plump and inexplicably thin. There were people in various colorful outfits in combination of jeans and khakis, skirts and shorts, wearing shirts of every size and style while some were men preferred to wear no shirt at all and some women were dressed down due to the heat in some tight fitting and inappropriate garb that made the older people stop and stare, some wore sandals, some flip-flops, some were even barefoot and others wore tennis shoes just to be able to take part in the action that surrounded them.

There were a great many bodies in attendance  that afternoon, given to various ranges of emotion and wonder as the flashy festivities continued to get underway. Amid the sea of people and various rides of every shape and color, and the numerous stands where the pleasant aroma of new and strange combinations of foods had gotten the nearby people's mouth watering enough to have them part with the hard earned and painstakingly saved cash in their respective pockets, had been a lone little girl with the most vibrant shade of wild red hair that trailed down her back and pulled into two pigtails braided with two bright pink bows on the ends of each so as not to block her rather limited view of the world around her and impede on the fun she had before hand.

She seemed to have been the only one not enjoying the festivities and unbothered by the sights and sounds that had come with being at such a place that normally a child as young as she would have been captivated by at the moment of arrival and perhaps before when she, herself had arrived she was, but at the current moment, her naturally baby blue eyes were blurred to the point of being difficult to see amid the vast sea of random people that surrounded her which also added to the relative puffiness of her tiny cheeks and the reddening of her little nose as a thin layer of mucus oozed from her tiny nostrils as she attempted to make sense of the apparent round of confusion that had befallen her.

A sensation of sickness filled her belly as she stood alone where last she had seen anyone she recognized in the past thirty minutes. Her belly seemed to be turning back flips as she felt the onset of churning deep within as a wave of nausea seemed to hit at a most inopportune time. The little body of the small redhead trembled as she took a step forward unsure as she did if attempting to search for her long lost parents had been the right move.

Once more she attempted to search through tear stained baby blue eyes for the people whom had brought her to the surrounding loud, and busy carnival, that had once been a place of fun and new found excitement for her. Sadly, all of the fun and excitement gave way to only bouts of sorrowful tears as the little innocent redhead girl of six years of age, found herself unable to locate her parents following a rushed trip to the local porta potty after one too many sugary drinks while enjoying her visit.

Having had enough of playing the waiting game, she decided to try and find help from one of the working adults in the area. Despite being so young, she tried her best to recall the places her parents had taken her before she went to use the restroom but had been unable to. It did little good to travel aimlessly amid the sea of people so she ventured past them and into the spaces between the rides where she wandered into an area that had little to no people aside from the strange man whom had been in charge of a goldfish game that she wished to try before having to answer the call of nature prior to everyone she knew disappearing.

The strange man was surprisingly thin, bone structure included, with tight pale skin and long dark brown hair. On his face was a scruffy brown beard as thick as the hair on his head and he wore thick dark sunglasses. The girl took note of him wearing a dark red carnival shirt with black trimming and faded denim jeans with formerly white sneakers caked in mud and dust from the road and his area where he set up his game.

Up close, he smelled of aged grease and dry dirt as he approached the frightened little girl whom seemed to have recalled him from when they first met at the goldfish games and he commented on her bright pink shoes that matched her light pink overalls and white t-shirt with pink flowers on the end. He had even commented on the  yellow kids' watch she wore, that had some wacky cartoon character in the form of a green frog on it that she won as a prize from a previous game she participated in with her family.

For as long as she'd been out in the sun, she could feel her skin becoming pained and red from all of the unwanted heat beaming down on her as she found herself in the company of this slightly familiar stranger. Her throat was so sore dry from all of her crying that she hardly had a voice as she attempted to ask for assistance from this stranger whom had been apart of the carnival. She found it difficult to do much of anything due to the anxiousness and fear that coursed through her. She'd been so out of it that she could feel her palms sweating as she clenched them nervous as she had not been keen on speaking to strangers, but  despite her young age she was well aware that this wasn't a normal set of circumstances.

Thinking better of approaching the man, she found herself taking note of a blonde female worker wearing the same shirt as the man with dark glasses and approached her, finding it less difficult to ask for assistance from the woman than the strange man.

"C-Can you help me find my Mommy and Daddy please?" she asked.

The blonde woman had been about to assist her when the man approached smiling as if his life depended on it and kneeling down to the little girl's level while waving off the blonde woman with the promise of assisting the girl himself.

"I remember you...you came with your Mommy and Daddy to look at the fish." he said in a pleasant tone.

His tone had not matched his demeanor as he'd been hidden behind thick black glasses that didn't make the girl feel very comfortable when looking at them. It was as if his eyes were foreign to her in that moment.

"I just saw them as a matter of fact, and I could take you to them if you'd like."offered the strange man.

Filled with the tiniest bit of hope that she could finally be reunited with her family and return home after such a long day, she reluctantly agreed to accompany him.

With a cheery smile and a kind voice, the strange man lead the tearful little girl away from the carnival with the promise of helping her find her family only to knock her out via a dirty cleaning rag filled with a pleasant smelling liquid that the girl had not recognized when it covered her mouth and started to make her forget about the world around her while she struggled to get free of the strange man's grasp whom had held her tightly as she kicked and screamed while he tightened his grip on her small body.

Her lungs burned and her vision further blurred despite the darkness that she'd only been privy to seeing and before she knew it, her little body went limp in the strange man's arms and he carried her weightless form toward his dark red pickup truck and tossed her inside closing and locking the door behind her as she collapsed into the back seat.

Had she been awake, she might have been afraid of the cramped space and the stench of old grease and rotten garbage that lined it.

She might even have realized the concerned woman, whom had left her to the devices of the strange man was in fact his accomplice, whom had been a thin blonde with green eyes and much too much makeup on her face for a hot summer afternoon which melted immediately when she entered the passenger side of the red pickup truck.

The strange man climbed into the driver side and started the engine after looking back at the involuntarily slumbering girl in the back of them. He pulled out of the lot as the other workers continued their labor of trying to wrap up the carnival and move on to the next town. None had been any the wiser as to what had just occurred and the little girl even less so abut the true location of both her parents.

Not far along the abandoned highway were the bodies of a man roughly in his early thirties wearing a not so white t-shirt and dark brown shorts with black sandals on his feet, and a woman of about a few years his junior with long curly red hair and ruby red lips with a red button down vest shirt and orange shorts on her legs and white sneakers now soiled via being tossed about in the dirt when her body rolled into the nearby ditch. The couple had been severely beaten to death, the man via a lead pipe to the back of the skull initiating blunt force trauma and the woman having been strangled with marks about her lovely pale neck.

These loving people had elected to leave all their cares behind when it came to their respective jobs and personal obligations and have a fun weekend as a family with their only daughter by bringing her to the local carnival for a good time. Sadly, it turned into a tragic affair when the husband was ambushed after a blonde woman approached him for help pertaining to her pickup truck going flat and his life coming to a violent and abrupt end ever since he agreed to assist her.

Concerned about her husband, but not willing to leave her six year old daughter behind as she used the porta potty, The woman found herself in the middle of an ambush via an enraged carnival worker whom had drug her from the line of sight after punching her into unconsciousness and strangled her to death before throwing her body into the same ditch that held her deceased husband.

Such was the fate of the drugged little redhead girl's loving family unbeknownst to her.

Much to the delight of the vile fiends that held her captive as their dark red pickup truck traveled down the open highway without a care in the world about being apprehended for their heinous crimes. As there had been no witnesses, and no trace of the lost little girl, nor her parents as the festivities went on.

Chapter 1: The Same Old Boring Kind Of Life
Chapter 1: The Same Old Boring Kind Of Life Layla's Bedroom,144 W. Guthrie Road, The Quinn Residence, W. Main Highway, Temperance, South Dakota.... Golden rays from an unrelenting sun seemed to burst through the thick beige drapes that lined the windows of a single bedroom on the east end of a small two bedroom house in the backwoods. It was a yellow house, a significant thing to remember due to all of the surrounding trees and dark brown soil that made the place really feel like home aside from the gravel road that lead out to the main highway which was covered in thick black asphalt and smelled heavily of readily replaced black tar. The trees provided a good deal of shade, but it depended where the sun was heavily focused and how determined it was to burst through the drapes. The baby blue eyes of a formerly slumbering sixteen year old girl opened to the new morning as wet tears began to dry along her supple pale colored cheeks. It seemed to always be this way whenever

Chapter 2: Just Another Day In Temperance
Chapter 2: Just Another Day In TemperanceThe Kitchen,144 W. Guthrie Road, The Quinn Residence, W. Main Highway, Temperance, South Dakota... A gentle breeze moved passed the traveling teen who found herself feeling a bit exhausted from the long walk, Layla as she moved down the highway toward the local bus stop was one of two that would finally get her to school. She held her book bag on one shoulder via the strap and did her very best to ignore the catcalls from the unseemly and aged grease monkeys that fixed up various cars in the old body shop located along her route to the bus stop. She hated being objectified by men old enough to be her father and then some and rolled her eyes as she moved. It wasn't all bad, she sometimes would envision one of the cars getting loose and smashing the offending bastards to death and leaving them in a pool of their blood and slick black car oil for laughs. Their annoying words were the very reason she often wore her gray sweatshirt even when it

Chapter 3: The None Too Subtle Perks Of Road Life
Chapter 3: The None Too Subtle Perks Of Road LifeRoom 42, Kings Canyon Motel, Roadside Motel, Unknown City, South Dakota.... The inescapable call of nature shattered the slumber of a formerly snoring naked man with short dark brown hair and a thick scruffy beard that lined a handsome face with rugged features, he appeared to have been in his early thirties as he pulled back the crisp white sheet that lined the bed due to the thick comforter being absent following his discarding of it the previous night as he took note of the slumbering blonde lying on her side next to him. She'd been equally naked and had her back to him where her exposed backside was in full view of his vision along with the lining of her spine as she continued to drool over the white fluffy pillow she currently occupied. The stench of sex and sweat filled the air and various articles of their mutually shed attire littered the floor amid tossed pillows and the thick brown comforter that came with the bed. Sha

Chapter 4: The Glorious Lifestyle Of Steel CowboysRoom 42, Kings Canyon Motel, Roadside Motel, Unknown City, South Dakota.... Revving engines filled the surrounding air as "Brick" and his gang lined the parking lot and prepared to take off down the long and winding road in continuation of their journey and the party that seemed to never end whenever they were together. There were about nine of them hitting the road all together and each and everyone of them carried the blood of a beast inside their veins as they fuled up on cocain and alcohol while tearing through town after town reveling in the new found freedom their lifestyle had afforded them. Each member of The Howlers M.C wore a patch and each member sported the classic black leather cut that solidified their unity. Much like the many riders of mortal means, the club was their life. And they wouldn't hesitate to take anyone out that attempted to bring harm to either one of their members. They were a family after all, more s

Chapter 5: An Uneventful School Day
Chapter 5: An Uneventful School DayForest Lake High School, Temperance, South Dakota.... Layla arrived at the front of the school with plenty of time as Derrick exited his mother's car, a white four door sedan and approached her just as Amy came rushing up to them clutching her loose books into her chest with both arms. It seemed they were down to being a just a trio once more with Casey off doing her cheerleader thing and they made their way toward the front doors of the school after meeting up. It was still quite warm out and all of the other students were taking their collective sweet time to file inside before the bell rang. This day seemed just as unappealing and mundane as all of the other days and nights Layla spent in Temperance. She just had her friends and dreams for her future to keep her going despite not even wanting to climb out of bed much of the time. The none too eager students made their journey into the school veering off toward their respective 1st period c

Chapter 6: Welcome To Temperance
Chapter 6: Welcome To Temperance The Roadside, Temperance, South Dakota.... Brick took a few moments to drain the main vein along the side of the highway as he veered off toward the open grassland and swiftly unzipped his jeans and took hold of the enormous trouser snake that had been within. He grunted in relief as the steady stream of dark yellow urine was expelled from his formerly aching bladder. His keen eyes took in the sight of the surrounding land and the up cropping of a town a few miles out. He smirked when he noted the quiet little place not far from the road sign where he'd chosen to relieve himself and the almost faded black lettering on the formerly white square sign that read "WELCOME TO TEMPERANCE". It was interesting to see that they had made it all the way to South Dakota on their random journey and now were set to enter the apparently sleepy town of Temperance. Brick smirked at the sign and turned his attention back to relieving himself along the highway m

Chapter 7: An Obnoxious New Arrival
Chapter 7: An Obnoxious New ArrivalThe Roadside, Temperance, South Dakota... Layla Quinn had a long day and wasn't in the least looking forward to what was awaiting her when she returned home to the two-bedroom yellow house in the middle of the woods that she shared with her father and his annoying slobbery rottweiler. She barely managed to get through the final stretch of class before her mind went completely blank in terms of having mental burnout from being overwhelmed and decidedly stressed due to her day. Lunch was the only positive thing about it and even then they had to talk about their respective upcoming classes. When the school bell rang it was a bittersweet experience as she knew that the day was only going to begin all over again and she'd have to part from her friends who had their stuff to do as far as after-school work and chores are done. With her mind now on the subject of work, Layla looked at her watch and sighed knowing that if she had not hurried she'd mi

Chapter 8: First Sight
Chapter 8: First SightEarl's Diner, Temperance, South Dakota... The moment Layla Quinn looked up from wiping down the front counter, she couldn't help but roll her eyes at the sight at the opposite end of the diner where she had taken note of the owners of the various motorcycles that were parked outside. It didn't take much to convince her that they were a group that had been nothing but trouble from the looks of them, even the blonde who had a fondness for exhibition with her boyfriend looked to be of the trouble-making sort. Of all the ruffians clad in black leather that she took note of, none had stood out more than the apparent ring leader who seemed to be the most laid back of them all as he turned up his brown glass bottle of beer as his dark eyes seemed to peer into her very being as she stood at the front counter unsure how best to proceed as she returned his gaze. It was an odd thing, she had forgotten what she was supposed to be doing and couldn't seem to take he

Chapter 9: Uncanny Heroics
Chapter 9: Uncanny HeroicsThe Back Alley, Earl's Diner, Temperance, South Dakota... Grey eyes met those of terrified blue only briefly as Brick found himself quickly approaching the scene where Layla Quinn found herself held at knifepoint following her decision to get some much-needed air outside the nearby diner after attempting to sort through feelings that seemed to spring upon her out of the clear blue sky shortly after coming into contact with Brick for the very first time. The fury that filled the newly arrived werewolf had been so intense that his grey eyes shifted into a glowing red as he rushed over toward the distressed Layla catching the knife-wielding psychopath off guard and ramming him via his neck into the dumpster and proceeded to pound the already thin frail man into the ground with raging fists. He had not recalled much aside from the blood oozing from the bastard who had dared to attempt a robbery, and the sheer terror that was filed across the face of the youn
