“I-I remember!” Sophia quickly said, pulling her body away. There was a gleam of amusement in the man’s eyes that annoyed Sophia. “Daniel Mateo. You’re not a paparazzi, so what do you want from me?”

“Do I need to want something first before I can get close to you?” Daniel replied, raising an eyebrow.

Sophia stared at him in confusion and bluntly said, “It feels strange if it’s not like that.”

Daniel blinked, staring at Sophia for a long time, perhaps mesmerized by the beauty of the woman beside him, or maybe by her cold and blunt attitude that surprised him. “You remind me of someone,” he said.

Sophia smirked. “Who? Your late lover?”

"Yes, I love that man," Sophia finally answered, lowering her gaze as she met Daniel's surprised eyes. How unfortunate, she thought bitterly. "I fell in love with a man like Albert Raymond," she continued inwardly, a faint, wry smile tugging at her lips.It was the first time Sophia admitted it to someone other than herself. She couldn't believe she had confided in someone like Daniel, a man she had only met recently."But he doesn't return your feelings," Daniel said, his words striking her like a blow."That's right," she replied, forcing a carefree smile.Yet Daniel could see the sadness in her eyes. He was about to change the subject, but Sophia spoke first."Have you ever fallen in love before, Mr. Mateo?""First of all, call me Daniel. And yes, I have fallen in love before.""Really?""I get it. I get it. My appearance makes me look like someone who doesn't take things seriously, but don't judge a book by its cover."That was exactly what Sophia had done, and now she felt slight

"Where have you been?!"That was the first thing Sophia heard as soon as she entered Albert's office."Out," Sophia replied curtly and indifferently as she walked toward the sofa and flopped down onto it. Albert had been on a call, his expression stern, but her entrance distracted him. Luke Abraham had already left, he must have been there to discuss business matters."Out, you say?" Albert's face darkened with anger. "Do you take me for a fool?""Albert, when I said 'out’, I didn’t mean the waiting chairs in your secretary's office.""Then where did you go?""Why do I need to tell you?"Albert let out a sigh, pinching the

"I thought this was a business meeting," Sophia whispered to Albert. She was forced to sit close to her husband because the seat next to her was occupied by a woman she barely knew, aside from seeing her a few times on television advertising a product."Yes, it is a business meeting, and also an early party for our product launch next week.""Oh, great! Now I’m stuck here," Sophia muttered softly.Albert chuckled at her remark.People started drinking their champagne and partying, the loud music blending with their conversations. “Albert! What do you think you just did, huh?” Sophia snapped, trying to pull her hand away from Albert’s firm grip.“Shut up!” he replied firmly. His strides were long, and he walked even faster, dragging Sophia along with him. They descended to the basement parking lot and got into the car.“You’re ruining my fun!” Sophia shouted while rubbing her reddened hand.“Fun? Lowering yourself just to spite me, that’s what you call fun?!”Sophia glared at him angrily. “Don’t flatter yourself. As morning dawned, Sophia went downstairs for breakfast and found Albert already seated at the dining table. It was unusual for him not to have left for work at this hour, she thought. As Sophia approached him, Albert shifted his gaze from the gadget in his hand to her. His stare made Sophia hold her breath, the memories of what they did last night and what Albert did afterward flashing vividly in her mind. Her face flushed, and she quickly turned toward the kitchen, heading for Dana. But it was too late, Albert had already noticed the redness tinting his wife’s cheeks.“Sophia, are you okay, dear? Albert told me you were drinking last night,” Dana asked as soon as she realized Sophia’s presence in the kitc

They had refused earlier, but now here they were, standing in the vineyard Dana had mentioned. It wasn’t very large, located behind the house, past the garden. The grapevines grew lushly, climbing along the framework of a semi-circular arch.Dana’s husband, Joe Florence, was already there. Sophia usually addressed him formally, despite Joe having suggested several times that she call him simply by his first name. She hadn’t gotten used to it yet.Joe worked as the vineyard caretaker. He and his wife lived nearby, and managing the plots of land owned by Albert had been their job long before Albert even purchased the house.“Mrs. Raymond, you’re here!” Joe greeted as they approached.“Hello, Sir Florence,” Sophia replied warm

Albert had just filled the last basket with fresh red grapes. Sweat covered his entire body, his face slightly flushed from the heat, it was nearing midday. Yet, Sophia and Dana had not returned. Joe mentioned that Dana had gone to pick vegetables in the greenhouse. That’s why Albert decided to go and check on them.Meanwhile, in the greenhouse, Sophia was sitting on a wooden bench with her right leg propped over her left thigh, gently massaging her reddened ankle. It had happened earlier when Sophia was crouched down picking chili peppers. She hadn’t noticed a snail crawling slowly up the back of her foot. The moment she realized its presence, she let out a scream and instinctively flailed her leg wildly before running away. In her panic, she failed to notice a mound of dirt in her path and tripped over it.

Albert took Sophia to the doctor, and her ankle was examined and wrapped in a white bandage. Fortunately, the clinic where Sophia was treated was located in a quiet corner of the city and was currently empty, so no one would see her being carried on Albert's back like a koala, which would be the most embarrassing thing that could happen."For what reason are you taking a leave today?" Sophia asked after they arrived home and were sitting in the kitchen pantry, enjoying the lunch Dana had prepared."I don’t need a reason," Albert replied briefly.Sophia had asked because since morning, Albert had been holding his tablet—except when they were in the garden earlier, which made Sophia think that he was busy with his work at the office, even though he had taken the day off.

It was as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over her. Sophia froze upon hearing Albert’s confession. So all this time, Albert had been cooking and ordering steak for their dinners together because she liked it? Not because he liked it himself? But when had she ever told him that she liked steak?“You don’t like steak?” Albert asked when Sophia remained silent, not uttering a word.“I-I do… like it,” Sophia replied, still in disbelief.Sophia had never given much thought to her favorite food. She liked anything that tasted good. The only thing she truly considered her favorite was tomatoes. As for steak… she wasn’t sure. She ate it because it was delicious. But no

"Is Daniel gay?""Sophie—"Sophia gasped. "What if all this time he’s actually been after you, not me? You, Albert!" She covered her mouth in disbelief, while Albert shot her a sharp, cold glare.Sophia then chuckled. "I’m just kidding. I’m sure Daniel wasn’t serious either."Albert smirked faintly. "How can you be so sure?"Sophia tilted her head to the side. What Daniel said earlier might have been true, but she wasn’t entirely sure. "Daniel has been in love before. And, according to Daniel, she was beautiful."Albert initially didn’t want to care, but after hearing his wife’s comment, he turned to face her.

The café was relatively quiet, with only a few customers. When Sophia appeared at the door, a waiter greeted her warmly and invited them in, then led the two of them to a VIP room. Sophia assumed Luke had made a reservation in advance. The café’s interior was luxurious yet classic, and the service rivaled that of a five-star restaurant. When the VIP room door opened, Sophia scanned the room and saw no one else but her brother sitting alone at a table in the center of the space. As their eyes met, Sophia thought she saw a smile on Luke’s lips—or was it just her imagination?
