CHAPTER 010: Sarah Discovers Rowan’s Sinister Connection

The house was unnaturally quiet—the quiet that pressed on my chest and made my breathing hard. My fingers curled into the fabric of my skirt, my mind racing, and I sat on the edge of the bed. Lilith’s words for days had haunted me. ‘You have no idea what he’s done for you.’ Her smugness in her tone and the curl of her lips into that infuriating smirk was like a needle in my brain.

I couldn’t shake it. I couldn’t ignore it anymore.

I glanced at the hallway, where Rowan’s study stood, like a forbidden gate. Maybe the answers I needed were hidden with the secrets he wouldn’t tell me. I stood, legs shaky but resolved. I couldn’t spend a moment longer living this life filled with lies and half-truths.

I pushed the door to his study open, and it creaked softly. It was heavy inside air thickened with the smell of leather and wood. In the centre sat Rowan’s desk, a monument to his authority. It was perfectly organized, and everything

Rowan’s footsteps echoed down the hall, every one of them slowly tightening the knot in my stomach. I didn’t have much time. The polished surface held the photo I had found, its torn edges taunting me with answers I'd never get. Who was she, and why did Rowan keep her from me?His voice, near silence, sliced through. “Sarah.”I froze. I turned to face him; the air grew heavier, suffocating. In the doorway he stood, his tall figure blocking the faint light falling from the hallway. His eyes were glacial, sharp enough to cut. They homed in on the desk where the photo and papers were. “What are you doing in here?” His voice was calm—too calm. That made it worse. It was a moment of tranquility before the impending chaos.I forced the words out, my throat tight, ‘I was looking for answers.’ "These are the answers I found, and they don't align with what y

CHAPTER 012The elegance of the setting was akin to a battlefield in disguise. The soft glow of the chandelier illuminated the crystal glasses, while the silverware stood off to the side, untouched, and tension simmered between us. Across from me, Lilith sat with a weaponized smirk of cruelty. The light illuminated her blonde hair, casting a shimmering halo around the devilish light in her eyes.He sat at the head of the table, his face distant as Rowan took a sip from his glass. Despite the torment, he remained silent and unfazed. The oppressive atmosphere had destroyed my appetite so that every bite of food felt like swallowing stones.Lilith’s voice rang out syrupy sweet.”Sarah.” That sent a shiver down my spine. She never asked questions, never had. That’s why I trusted her.My finger hesitated momentarily, and I clicked the first link. A news article popped up, its bold headline sending a chill through me: “The Missing Whistleblower and Pharma Giant.”I scanned the text, and my heart sank. Robert Gaines. I didn’t know his name, but I knew his story. At one point, Gaines was a former employee of Flint Pharmaceuticals who had filed complaints about unethical business practices. He vanished just weeks later. No trace. No leads. The article said the case had gone cold, but his family had desperately pleaded for answers. Rowan’s name was barely mentioned, just a shadow at the story's edge, and the company denied involvemen

My hand trembled slightly as I raised my fist to knock on the door, and I hesitated. Everything felt heavier tonight—my breath, my heartbeat, even the air seemed to press against my chest. The door swung open before I could make contact, and there he was. Jervis. His blonde hair was a tousled mess, as he’d just been running his fingers through it before turning his fists and anger over something in frustration. His glasses were crooked on his nose, but his eyes softened when they landed on me. His familiar presence loosened the knot in my stomach for a moment. He stepped aside to let me in, saying, "Sarah." "I was wondering when you'd come."I walked past him, but I couldn’t find the words. His apartment was warm compared to the icy knot of tension coiled inside my chest. He went through the door leading into his dorm—all of w

CHAPTER 016I stepped through the front door into a dim and quiet house. An expensive piece of furniture cast long shadows into the corner next to a single lamp that lit the room with a soft glow. My heart raced as I closed the door behind me. Every minute I expected Rowan to appear and his cold stare and sharp words to cut right through any excuse I could give for being out so late. The silence stretched instead.I hesitantly stepped into the living room. The dry air even faintly smelt of Rowan's cologne; it was woody mixed with just a bit of spice. It was subtle, but it stayed, like a net around me. I looked around the room, but he wasn’t there. His voice came from behind me, smooth but unsettling: 'You're late.'I spun around. His shirt was unbuttoned at the top, just enough to make me uncomfortable, and Rowan leaned against the doorway. His eyes were dark, but they weren’t cold; they were unreadable."I..." Lilith.Something was off with her today, flitting about nervously with that edge that she usually kept locked in her smug, calculated box. There were no usual sharp remarks. Instead, she seemed... tense. I saw how her eyes flicked to the clock and how her fingers tapped on the dining table. Her hand was hardly off her phone. She’d look at it every few minutes, as if she were waiting for a signal. Then, as if she couldn’t wait another second, I heard her leave. Her heels clicked faintly down the hallway; the front door opened and closed softly behind her.I couldn’t let this slide. Not tonight.I pulled on my coat and followed her. It was sharp night air, the kind that bites into your skin and makes your breath come out in visible puffs. There was a quiet on the street—a quiet

CHAPTER 052Rowan’s Point of ViewI waited for her to come back from wherever she’d run off to. The tension in the air was almost suffocating. No one I’d ever dealt with was like Sarah. Charm or force could not sway her. The longer I waited, the more restless I became.I looked up from where I sat when the door creaked open. Her eyes were sharp and suspicious, as if she already knew I had something planned. With a cold voice, she asked, "What now, Rowan?"I pulled the small velvet box from my pocket and stood. Giving her something so small and trivial was a ridiculous gesture, especially considering the weight of everything I'd done to her. But I had to try.I stepped closer. “This is for you.”She looked at the box, then back at me. “Do you think you can buy me off with a gift?”I held it out and admitted, “No.” “I think you deserve something that proves I’m not your enemy.”She didn’t take it. Her jaw was tight, and she just stared at me. “What is it?”“Open it and see.”As she tore

Detective Carter stood in the corner, arms crossed, his shadow reaching across the walls. He didn’t talk much, only watched me as I looked at him with that penetrating gaze that made me feel like I was trying to unravel some mystery he couldn’t even solve himself."What are we looking for?" His voice finally broke the silence, asking, "What are we looking for?"I didn’t look up. "The truth.""What's the truth about, Sarah?"I hesitated. Did I even know? I looked at him, his jaw clenched as he stared at the road. Finally, I uttered, "I don't know where to start."His grip on the steering wheel tightened, but he didn’t look at me. Sarah, you don’t have to say anything. I get it. I also think you deserve better than what Rowan’s giving you.” His words were heavy and sharp, hanging in the air. I looked out the window, the city lights all blending together. I whispered, “It’s not that simple.” Jervis' frustration was palpable, and he sighed in response. You’re making it complicated; it’s not simple. The guy’s toxic, Sarah. “You know he’s controlling you.” His bluntness made me flinch, but I didn’t argue. My mind betrayed me, flashing back to Rowan earlier that night. He had seized my arm in a commanding and desperate manner, his eyes piercing.Jervis pu

CHAPTER 049 SARAH’S POINT OF VIEW I heard Lilith’s laugh in my head long after she left the room. The venom in her voice and the sharpness in every word cut me deeply, leaving her wounds like tiny knives that continued to pierce me. Every time she lost her grip, her danger increased. She was unraveling. I put my head against the window and stared out into the city, tears ruining my vision until the lights became streaks. I looked into the mirror and saw a woman ripped apart, barely hanging on. I wanted to scream, to hurl something that would allow the turmoil inside me to escape. I clenched my fists so tightly that my nails dug into my palms, but instead I felt nothing.Steady footsteps dragged toward me from the hallway. My heart leapt. Rowan. The door creaked open, and he was standing there, frustration stamped across his face. As if summoned against his will, he crossed his arms and leaned against the frame.“What did Lilith say to you this time?” His voice was sharp, yet it ca

CHAPTER 048 SARAH’S POINT OF VIEW My apartment was silent, and I felt like I was being slowly hanged. I clenched my hands into fists on the counter, taking shallow, quick breaths, trying to stop my thoughts racing. Rowan’s last words wouldn’t stop playing in my head. Sarah, you have no idea what’s coming. But you will.” It wasn’t a threat; it was worse. It was a promise. I looked at my phone on the table; its screen was dark and ominous. I wanted to call Jervis, wanting to hear his steady, reassuring voice tell me everything would be fine. The other part, the stronger part, knew I couldn’t rely on him for this. Whatever Rowan was planning, it was for me. I hesitated, my hand hovering over the phone. The sound of a loud knock at the door knocked me out of my thoughts, and I felt my heart swell up into my throat. Not again.“Sarah, open up!” I heard the familiar voice, and relief flooded me. CHAPTER 047 Sarah’s Point of View Even cozy in its disarray, Jervis’s apartment felt safe. The corner lamp cast soft yellow light over the wooden floors, casting long shadows. It should have been comforting, but this evening it only made me more restless. I looked out the rain-splattered window, cars blurring past below. Jervis spoke behind me, his voice low and careful. “You can’t keep doing this to yourself, Sarah." I turned, and his steady green eyes met mine. His arms crossed, he was leaning against the kitchen counter. The laxity of his demeanour could not conceal the potency in his expression, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar. “I don’t know what you mean,” I said, but we both knew I was lying. His footsteps soft but firm, Jervis took a step closer. You’re torturing yourself trying to untangle everything, Rowan, your family, all of it. At some point, you’ve got to decide what matters more: answers or peace." I ran a hand through my hair and laughed bitterly. “Peace? Af

CHAPTER 046 Sarah’s Point of View The whirlwind in my chest matched the storm outside. I spread the papers across the floor of my room as rain battered the windows. Contracts, letters, and half-ripped photos stared back at me, pieces of a puzzle I couldn’t yet solve. Rowan’s family was mentioned more times than I could count, and my father’s name was always attached to it in ways that didn’t make sense. I grabbed a contract stamped with the Flint Pharmaceuticals logo; the ink faded but was legible enough to make me shiver. Dated before I was born, it was a business deal between my father and Steven Flint. The implications weren’t vague, but the terms were. It wasn’t just business. This was personal. I jumped, clutching the papers to my chest, as the door creaked. His tie was loosened, his hair damp from the rain, and Rowan stood in the door. He looked tired, but his eyes were sharp, and they scanned the room, landing on the mess of documents around me. He said, his voice low,

It was worse. I could tell that whatever was coming wasn’t going to be good, and he was waiting, planning.I was in the library, pacing back and forth, holding the photo I’d taken from the folder. Steven Flint’s face stared back at me, next to my father’s frozen smile. I had never known about this. Why had no one ever told me? Behind me, the door creaked open, and I froze. I didn’t have to turn around to know it was Rowan. His presence was dense and oppressive, like the presence of a storm cloud. “Looking for something?” His voice was calm but sharp and made my skin prickle. I held up the photo and turned to face him. “Why didn’t you tell me about this?" He looked at the photo but didn’t get any closer. “Because it doesn’t matter." “Doesn’t matter?” My voice cracked. “This is my father.

CHAPTER 044 Sarah’s Point of View Outside, the storm mirrored the chaos in my head. One drop after another cascaded down the windows, transforming the monotonous ticking of a clock into a looming calamity. The folder was spread open in front of me, and I sat at my desk. Each page presented a new puzzle piece that I wasn't sure I wanted to solve. Suddenly, the connection became clear. Rowan’s family was in too many documents—contracts, letters, photos—with my father’s name beside theirs. And the scariest part was how easy it all felt, like I had been played in some game by them. I noticed one paper. The photograph was old and faded at the edges. My father stood in it, next to a younger Steven Flint, Rowan’s father. They clasped hands in a firm handshake and were grinning. A laboratory, sleek and sterile, lay behind them with a sign that read *Flint Research Facility. A note was scrawled across the bottom of the photo in shaky handwriting: "For the future he and I both dreamt."
