CHAPTER 005
THREE YEARS LATER
The grocery store was busy, the chatter hummed and the carts clinked. Trying to ignore the noise around me, I moved through the aisles looking at my list. This was the last task on my long list for the day, and dinner needed to be made.
I heard someone say my name and reached for a carton of milk.
“Sarah?”
The voice pulled me out of my thoughts, and I froze. Turning, I saw him. Jervis Stone. My heart skipped a beat. I hadn’t seen him in years, but he was the same—tall, confident, with the same easy smile I remembered from high school.
I blinked in surprise, saying, “Jervis.” “I didn’t expect to see you here,” he said.
He stepped closer, and said “Likewise.” “How long has it been?”
I brushed a strand of hair out of my face and said, “Too long.”
He said, with a warm tone, “You haven’t changed much.”
I smiled, genuinely, and replied, “Neither have you.”
He leaned casually against the cart, then asked, “What brings you back to town?”
'I moved back a few years ago,' I said. “Back in the city, settled.”
His eyes were kind, but probing as he studied me for a moment. “How’s life been treating you?”
I said quickly, too quickly, “It’s fine.”
For a second, his smile faltered. “Fine, huh? “That doesn’t sound too convincing.”
I paused, not sure how much to tell. “It’s... complicated.”
He nodded and repeated, “Complicated.” “Yeah, I know the feeling.”
He paused, like that loaded with questions that hadn’t been asked. He then tilted his head slightly. “Are you married?”
I said quietly, the word heavier than it should be.
His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, but he recovered quickly. He took a moment to respond, “Well,” he said, “how about we catch up?” Let me drive you home.”
I hesitated, then nodded. “That sounds nice.”
The groceries were loaded into his car and we set off. The engine hum filled the silence, but at first the drive was quiet. It wasn’t awkward, though. It was comfortable, like an old rhythm you’re slipping into.
He looked at me and said eventually, “So, are you happy?”
I turned to look out the window, the question caught me off guard. “I’m... doing okay,” I said softly.
He didn’t push me, just nodded, his hands tightening around the wheel.
My chest tightened when we pulled into the driveway. Sleek and black, Rowan’s car sat there and parked like he owned the place.
“Is that his?” His voice cautious, Jervis asked.
I said yes, my heart starting to race.
Neither of us moved, and we sat in silence for a moment. The front door of the house swung open just as I was about to open the door.
And then I saw them.
His arm draped casually around Lilith, Rowan stepped out. With her blonde hair gleaming in the sunlight as she leaned into him, she was laughing.
I caught my breath in my throat.
Jervis said softly, his hand hovering near mine, unsure if he should touch me, “Sarah.”
I forced a tight smile and shook my head. I said it was fine, even though I felt like I might shatter.
He asked concerningly, “Are you sure?”
I opened the door, already saying, “I’m sure.” “Thanks for the ride.”
Before he could say more, I stepped out, leaving the groceries in the trunk. My chest tight with anger, confusion, I walked towards the house, my legs feeling like lead.
The house was eerily quiet, or rather so quietly that no single creak of the wood floor ceased to sound deafening. I didn’t have to search for them. I knew where they were already.
Upstairs, Lilith’s laughter rang out, and then a sound that made my stomach churn.
Slowly I was moving, deliberately climbing the stairs. I could barely hear anything else, but her voice was clear, too clear, my heart was pounding so loudly.
The door to our bedroom was slightly ajar, and I reached it. I didn’t have to push it open to know what was happening, but I did anyway.
There they were.
Tangled together in the bed I had slept in for three years, Rowan and Lilith.
I couldn’t move for a moment. I couldn’t breathe. I felt like I was going to fall and the world seemed to tilt.
He looked up then, his eyes meeting mine. I thought I saw a flash of guilt on his face for a split second. The cold, detached expression I had grown so used to returned, but it was gone as quickly as it came.
His voice was calm but firm, so he said, 'Get out.'”
My throat was tight, and I stared at him. “How could you—”
He stood and walked towards me, repeating, “Get out.” He moved slowly, deliberately, as if he wasn’t in the middle of betraying me in the most intimate way possible.
I begged my voice to bit through, to break, “Rowan, please.”
But he didn’t listen. His hand was firm, but not violent, as he grabbed the door and pushed me back.
He slammed the door in my face, saying, “Don’t make a scene, Sarah.”
Lilith’s laughter was sharp and mocking, flowing through the wood like it’d cut into him more than any of his words did.
I stood there, my hands trembling, staring at the door. I felt like my mind was spinning, I felt like my chest was so tight that just trying to breathe hurt.
Now what was I supposed to do?
CHAPTER 006My body was trembling with silent sobs, and I stood outside the door. Through the crack, Lilith’s voice came, sharp and mocking, each moan a cruel reminder of all I’d never been to Rowan. Each sound cut deeper, stabbing a knife into my chest.Tears streamed down my face; my lips quivered. I thought of all the nights I had spent with Rowan—the pain, the biting of my lips to keep from crying out. He had never looked at me the way he looked at her. It had never been gentle, because he had never cared enough to make it so. It was always cold and mechanical, something he never asked for. Until now, I thought that was all there was.I slid down the wall until I was sitting on the cold floor, pressing my back against it. The sounds from the room didn’t stop, and I felt a strange mix of shame and rage. I tried to block them out, but my hands clenched into fists, and they were relentless. Lilith’s laughter was echoing and taunting in my ears. Was I really so naive? If I had really t
CHAPTER 007: Sarah Confronts Rowan’s Cruel ControlI sat at the vanity, staring at my reflection; the house was suffocatingly quiet. The dress Rowan had chosen to wear fit against my body just so, and my makeup was perfect; I looked flawless, the shimmering eyeshadow catching when the room light dimmed, and it was time for me to bid him goodnight. I was the perfect wife, just as he wanted me to be. No amount of beauty could mask the emptiness in my eyes.“Are you ready yet?” Rowan’s voice cut through the silence, looking like a blade. Arriving in the doorway, he stood there, perfectly suited. His eyes passed over me in a cool, detached perusal, as if he were looking at a doll.I nodded, standing slowly, and swallowed hard. “Yes, I’m ready.”He said, his tone without warmth. “Don’t embarrass me tonight, okay?”His words hit like a whip, but I kept my face neutral. It was pointless to react. Defiance would only bring more cruelty. I walked out to the car, the click of my heels on the po
Chapter 008: Lilith’s Dangerous Game and a Shocking Revelation!Dinner had been unbearable. Rowan had barely spoken to me, his eyes darting between his phone and Lilith’s too loud laughter from the other side of the table. I stood at the sink, scrubbing plates that weren’t even mine, as my mind turned over with frustration. The maid installed a water tank on the flat roof and positioned a ladder inside the house to access the water. She then pumped it into a bucket, which she dragged into the house every morning and night for me to wash with, if I remembered to ask for it.I turned off the faucet and stacked the last plate on the drying rack, but I didn’t go upstairs. Voices. The voices in Rowan's study were low and sharp. I froze, straining to listen. It was Rowan and Lilith.Lilith hissed, slowly through the thick wooden door, ‘You’re losing your grip.’ “She’s starting to notice things,” he said.Rowan’s voice was tense. “She doesn’t know anything.” “It wouldn’t matter even if she di
Chapter 009: Jervis Offers Sarah an Unexpected Escape. In the peaceful sanctuary of the park, the chaos of my life was absent. The crisp air nipped at my skin as the bare branches of the trees stretched toward a gray sky, and tall shadows twisted darkly like veins along that frozen pond. The sound resembled the innocent laughter of children from the playground, and it seemed almost unrent.I curled my fingers into my coat and pulled it tighter around me. The chill wasn’t enough to keep me out. Lilith's taunts and Rowan's suffocating control swirled in my mind, each memory digging more profound than the last, tearing me apart. The only reprieve I had was being here, away from the house. Still, even here, my mind was heavy, weighing me down.A small part of me had hoped he would find me. I couldn’t help it; it was stupid and pathetic, but I couldn’t help it. I couldn’t help but recall the warmth of Jervis’s smile and how he looked at me like I meant something. No one had looked at me li
CHAPTER 010: Sarah Discovers Rowan’s Sinister Connection The house was unnaturally quiet—the quiet that pressed on my chest and made my breathing hard. My fingers curled into the fabric of my skirt, my mind racing, and I sat on the edge of the bed. Lilith’s words for days had haunted me. ‘You have no idea what he’s done for you.’ Her smugness in her tone and the curl of her lips into that infuriating smirk was like a needle in my brain.I couldn’t shake it. I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I glanced at the hallway, where Rowan’s study stood, like a forbidden gate. Maybe the answers I needed were hidden with the secrets he wouldn’t tell me. I stood, legs shaky but resolved. I couldn’t spend a moment longer living this life filled with lies and half-truths. I pushed the door to his study open, and it creaked softly. It was heavy inside air thickened with the smell of leather and wood. In the centre sat Rowan’s desk, a monument to his authority. It was perfectly organized, and everything
CHAPTER 011The light was dim, and the dim light cast long shadows on the walls. I gripped the edge of the desk with my trembling hands. Rowan’s footsteps echoed down the hall, every one of them slowly tightening the knot in my stomach. I didn’t have much time. The polished surface held the photo I had found, its torn edges taunting me with answers I'd never get. Who was she, and why did Rowan keep her from me?His voice, near silence, sliced through. “Sarah.”I froze. I turned to face him; the air grew heavier, suffocating. In the doorway he stood, his tall figure blocking the faint light falling from the hallway. His eyes were glacial, sharp enough to cut. They homed in on the desk where the photo and papers were. “What are you doing in here?” His voice was calm—too calm. That made it worse. It was a moment of tranquility before the impending chaos.I forced the words out, my throat tight, ‘I was looking for answers.’ "These are the answers I found, and they don't align with what y
CHAPTER 012The elegance of the setting was akin to a battlefield in disguise. The soft glow of the chandelier illuminated the crystal glasses, while the silverware stood off to the side, untouched, and tension simmered between us. Across from me, Lilith sat with a weaponized smirk of cruelty. The light illuminated her blonde hair, casting a shimmering halo around the devilish light in her eyes.He sat at the head of the table, his face distant as Rowan took a sip from his glass. Despite the torment, he remained silent and unfazed. The oppressive atmosphere had destroyed my appetite so that every bite of food felt like swallowing stones.Lilith’s voice rang out syrupy sweet.”Sarah.” That sent a shiver down my spine. Tonight you’ve been so quiet. You’re not even here, almost.”I tightened my grip on the fork until the metal dug into my palm. “I have nothing to say.”Her gentle laughter resonated like a hammer on a chalkboard. “Well, you should. It must be exhausting to act like the per
CHAPTER 013I stepped inside the house, which was muted but not the peaceful calm. It was heavy, as if the walls were closing in on me. I walked towards the living room, my heart pounding. Sprawled like a queen on her throne was Lilith on the couch. She had her legs crossed, a phone in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other. When she heard me, she looked up, and that infuriating smirk spread across her face. She snorted, her voice rasping with mockery and filling up with surprise. “Back so soon?” “I thought you’d finally grown a spine and left for good.”I stopped in the doorway, gripping the frame so hard my knuckles went white. “We need to talk.”Her smirk never wavered as she tilted her head. “Oh? ‘What could we possibly have to talk about?’”Moving into the room, each movement was deliberate, accomplished with a weight and a heaviness, as if I were preparing to fight. The simple words I wanted to hear came tumbling out of me. “I want to know the truth, Lilith.”A sharp, cru
CHAPTER 055Sarah’s Moral Dilemma: Revenge vs. JusticeSarah Moon’s POINT OF VIEW!The weight of what I had exposed overwhelmed my chest. The documents in my hand—proof, hard, and undeniable—have been like poison seeping into my blood. Rowan’s empire of lies, manipulation, and crime became all specified in black and white. And, but, regardless of having everything I needed to damage him, there has been this gnawing feeling in me. What turned into I definitely after? Was this approximately revenge? Or turned into, I just... doing what turned into proper?I had already come this far. The path that had led me here had been lengthy and dark. From the primary day I’d gotten down to break him to now retaining the proof that might convey him down, each part of me screamed to smash him. But it changed into too smooth. Too enjoyable. A bitter kind of victory I wasn’t positive I desired anymore.I paced within the dimly lit condo, the town lighting fixtures flashing outside the window like a ne
CHAPTER 054Uncovering the Hidden Truth Behind Rowan’s SuccessSarah Moon's point of view!I could not sit down nevertheless. Not after everything that had come about. My mind was a whirlwind, spinning with questions, doubt, and rage. But one idea kept piercing through it all: I needed to understand. I had to understand how Rowan did it—how he constructed his empire, how he got all this electricity, all that money. What turned into the real secret?Megan had been insistent. She kept telling me to stay centered and not let the feelings blind me. But I have changed beyond emotions now. I needed answers, and I needed them rapidly.Flint Pharmaceuticals. That became what all of it led to. Where everything is related. Rowan wasn’t just a few business wealthy people; he was a crook mastermind hiding in the back of the cover of a respectable CEO.Megan had the plan. I wasn’t certain how, but she had the connections to get us into Flint. I didn’t care how risky it became. I’d come this far, a
CHAPTER 053Sarah's Hidden Ally Emerges from the ShadowsSarah's Point of View! The night felt heavier than regular as I walked again to my apartment, my head spinning. Rowan had driven me to the threshold, and just once I thought I couldn't stand it anymore, a call popped into my thoughts—Megan. She had been a former employee of Rowan’s, and although we didn’t speak a great deal, I remembered her eyes and the way she would look at me like she knew something I didn’t.Now, it seemed like the universe turned into pulling me closer to her. My phone buzzed in my pocket, interrupting my thoughts. I hesitated before pulling it out, already understanding it wasn’t going to be accurate information. It was an encrypted message from a random variety.“Meet me at the vintage warehouse the following day. I actually have something you need to recognize. Don’t believe anybody. Not even Rowan.I stood nonetheless, the hairs at the back of my neck standing up. Megan. This had to be her. My thoughts
CHAPTER 052Rowan’s Point of ViewI waited for her to come back from wherever she’d run off to. The tension in the air was almost suffocating. No one I’d ever dealt with was like Sarah. Charm or force could not sway her. The longer I waited, the more restless I became.I looked up from where I sat when the door creaked open. Her eyes were sharp and suspicious, as if she already knew I had something planned. With a cold voice, she asked, "What now, Rowan?"I pulled the small velvet box from my pocket and stood. Giving her something so small and trivial was a ridiculous gesture, especially considering the weight of everything I'd done to her. But I had to try.I stepped closer. “This is for you.”She looked at the box, then back at me. “Do you think you can buy me off with a gift?”I held it out and admitted, “No.” “I think you deserve something that proves I’m not your enemy.”She didn’t take it. Her jaw was tight, and she just stared at me. “What is it?”“Open it and see.”As she tore
CHAPTER 051Outside the storm had calmed a little, but inside my heart was a raging mess. My fingers sifted through the yellowed papers, searching for anything that could possibly explain the whisper I'd heard earlier."You don’t need to know who you really are."Those words had burrowed themselves into my mind, scratching at me like an itch I couldn’t reach.I wasn’t alone in the room. Detective Carter stood in the corner, arms crossed, his shadow reaching across the walls. He didn’t talk much, only watched me as I looked at him with that penetrating gaze that made me feel like I was trying to unravel some mystery he couldn’t even solve himself."What are we looking for?" His voice finally broke the silence, asking, "What are we looking for?"I didn’t look up. "The truth.""What's the truth about, Sarah?"I hesitated. Did I even know? The pull, though, was stronger than my doubt, and I kept going, the fragile papers crinkling under my fingertips. Then I saw it. A name. My name."Sara
CHAPTER 050 SARAH'S POINT OF VIEW With Jervis driving us out of the chaos of the house, I listened to the soft hum of the car engine. My thoughts collided; my mind filled with ideas. I looked at him, his jaw clenched as he stared at the road. Finally, I uttered, "I don't know where to start."His grip on the steering wheel tightened, but he didn’t look at me. Sarah, you don’t have to say anything. I get it. I also think you deserve better than what Rowan’s giving you.” His words were heavy and sharp, hanging in the air. I looked out the window, the city lights all blending together. I whispered, “It’s not that simple.” Jervis' frustration was palpable, and he sighed in response. You’re making it complicated; it’s not simple. The guy’s toxic, Sarah. “You know he’s controlling you.” His bluntness made me flinch, but I didn’t argue. My mind betrayed me, flashing back to Rowan earlier that night. He had seized my arm in a commanding and desperate manner, his eyes piercing.Jervis pu
CHAPTER 049 SARAH’S POINT OF VIEW I heard Lilith’s laugh in my head long after she left the room. The venom in her voice and the sharpness in every word cut me deeply, leaving her wounds like tiny knives that continued to pierce me. Every time she lost her grip, her danger increased. She was unraveling. I put my head against the window and stared out into the city, tears ruining my vision until the lights became streaks. I looked into the mirror and saw a woman ripped apart, barely hanging on. I wanted to scream, to hurl something that would allow the turmoil inside me to escape. I clenched my fists so tightly that my nails dug into my palms, but instead I felt nothing.Steady footsteps dragged toward me from the hallway. My heart leapt. Rowan. The door creaked open, and he was standing there, frustration stamped across his face. As if summoned against his will, he crossed his arms and leaned against the frame.“What did Lilith say to you this time?” His voice was sharp, yet it ca
CHAPTER 048 SARAH’S POINT OF VIEW My apartment was silent, and I felt like I was being slowly hanged. I clenched my hands into fists on the counter, taking shallow, quick breaths, trying to stop my thoughts racing. Rowan’s last words wouldn’t stop playing in my head. Sarah, you have no idea what’s coming. But you will.” It wasn’t a threat; it was worse. It was a promise. I looked at my phone on the table; its screen was dark and ominous. I wanted to call Jervis, wanting to hear his steady, reassuring voice tell me everything would be fine. The other part, the stronger part, knew I couldn’t rely on him for this. Whatever Rowan was planning, it was for me. I hesitated, my hand hovering over the phone. The sound of a loud knock at the door knocked me out of my thoughts, and I felt my heart swell up into my throat. Not again.“Sarah, open up!” I heard the familiar voice, and relief flooded me. Jervis.I unlocked the door quickly, practically stumbling to it. His hair was slightly
CHAPTER 047 Sarah’s Point of View Even cozy in its disarray, Jervis’s apartment felt safe. The corner lamp cast soft yellow light over the wooden floors, casting long shadows. It should have been comforting, but this evening it only made me more restless. I looked out the rain-splattered window, cars blurring past below. Jervis spoke behind me, his voice low and careful. “You can’t keep doing this to yourself, Sarah." I turned, and his steady green eyes met mine. His arms crossed, he was leaning against the kitchen counter. The laxity of his demeanour could not conceal the potency in his expression, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar. “I don’t know what you mean,” I said, but we both knew I was lying. His footsteps soft but firm, Jervis took a step closer. You’re torturing yourself trying to untangle everything, Rowan, your family, all of it. At some point, you’ve got to decide what matters more: answers or peace." I ran a hand through my hair and laughed bitterly. “Peace? Af
