Chapter 7
“It is included in the rule that they cannot kill someone, unless it is their opponent in the battle.” Ace read aloud the rules that are attached to the invitation that I received. “I won't die, Ace.” I simply replied, sounding bored and not even worried. Why would I get worried? I know that I can defeat whoever would be my opponent. “Adira, we still have choices to raise your clan. Let's not take this risk and put your life on the edge,” I quickly chuckled when Louis said that. It was like a joke to me. “Are you serious? Since the day we were born in this kind of life, our lives are already on the edge of death,” I shook my head to the two of them. They both turned silent as they knew that I was telling the truth. “How about your father? He won't allow you,” Louis is still pushing me not to go. “That's right. I'm sure Dad won't agree with this,” Ace added. They are both trying to convince me not to go. “He doesn't have to know,” I replied. “He's out of this. This is my battle,” “But Adir—” “No buts. I'm done here,” I stood up from my seat and left them all there. They all know me well. Once I made my decision, I never took it back anymore. The Mask Battle will be the easiest solution to uplift our clan. I don't know when we can defend against all the attacks. As much as possible, we have to do something to upgrade our clan’s rank in this Mafia world. “Dad, what are you eating?” I asked when I found him in the living room, watching TV, while having his meal. “Vegetables. The maids told me that you ordered the Chef to cook healthy food only for me,” he glared at me but he knows that he has no choice but to eat it somehow. “Of course. You have to be healthy, Dad. You cannot eat steak forever,” it is what he always wants to eat. “Anyway, we have a new investor. He came from a huge clan,” my brows met immediately when he mentioned that. “Who is that?” I quickly asked. I don't feel good about this anymore. “The Oliveros,” I tilted my head while trying to remember the clan he mentioned. “I heard about that clan before, but I'm not familiar with them.” “They have twins, one of them will soon take over the clan. I haven't seen any of them, but Otis Oliveros reached out and he wants to invest in your company and join hands with us,” he was wearing that huge smile that could totally rip his lips. “Why would he want to invest in us?” Isn't it suspicious? He wants to invest despite the fact that we are falling. “Is that even important? I know that they have plans. They might use us, but we can use them, too. That's how it works, Adira.” My father seems happy with that. But for me? I don't feel good about it. “I'll be the one to decide, Dad. I cannot just let them in. What if their plan is to erase us, too?” I can't let my guard down. “I trust you, Adira. You do what you want. But if they invest and help us, it would benefit us a lot. They are powerful, the other clans who want to erase us from this world won't dare to touch us again. Attacks will lessen,” I know that he only wants what's good for our clan. But I cannot just trust anybody that quick. Especially that Otis Oliveros came from a powerful clan that can surely eat us alive. After finding out about that, I informed Ace and Louis about it, too. “Oliveros? They are really powerful, Adira.” Louis commented while I was practicing shooting. “That's suspicious. They won't benefit anything from us,” Ace said, thinking deeply beside me. “Not yet, but soon? They will benefit from us. We will owe them a lot, so in the future, when they need us, we would have to pay them back.” That's how it works. “What do you think?” Ace asked. “We will accept it,” that's my decision. Right now, I am very desperate. “Are you sure about that?” Ace. “We're running out of time, Ace. We cannot defend the clan forever. If we stay like this, we will all end up being dead in the hands of these cruel people. We have to move…we have to accept everything that will be given to us,” if the Oliveros will use us, then I will be willing to be used by them. As long as we will be able to go back with the same rank we were, I don't mind doing everything at all costs. The next day, the meeting was set. Otis Oliveros insisted on coming here instead of meeting outside. I told Nathan to guard my father until Otis leaves the house. I don't know what might happen. At least, I know that my Dad is safe with Nathan, whatever happens. “Who's the visitor?” Chase asked while waiting in the meeting room we have in our house. “Otis Oliveros,” I replied. I saw how he paused all of a sudden as if he knew him. “Do you know him?” He shook his head quickly. “Of course not. His name sounds powerful,” he chuckled. “He is powerful. Be ready, Chase. If they do something, I want him…I should be the only one to punish him,” I ordered. “I'll bring him to you,” he replied firmly. “He's here,” Louis said as he entered the room. Ace gave me that be-careful-look as he went inside as well. “You must be Adira Sanchez,” I stared at the man, wearing a black leather jacket. He's wearing a casual outfit, looking like an arrogant man in the Mafia world. His smile was deceiving, I could tell in one glance. “It's my pleasure to meet you, Otis Oliveros.” But I have to ride it in, despite my suspicion. “No, it's my pleasure. I've heard a lot about you,” he chuckled. “Have a seat,” Ace offered. I paused when I found him looking at Chase standing right beside me. His eyes became playful as if he was playing with Chase. “Is he your bodyguard?” Otis asked. “He is,” I replied. “I see. I didn't know that you need someone to protect yourself,” he whistled after that. “I don't need one. My father was the one who wanted this,” I explained immediately. “Really?” He nodded, wearing that sly smile. I don't like that smile. I couldn't help but be annoyed by him. “Anyway, I am here to invest. I can give the money right away,” he said, cutting to the chase. “Why do you want to invest, Mr. Oliveros?” Now, I cornered him with my cold stares, reading him inside and out. Judging by his looks, despite the fact that he is good looking, I don't see him as someone trustworthy. “Is that even a ques—” “Of course, it is a question. Our clan is falling, I don't see any reasons for you to invest and help us.” That annoying smile finally vanished. He heaved a sigh before meeting my eyes again. “Just take it as a debt, Ms. Sanchez. Once I need your clan in the future, you would have to pay me back.” Just like what I was expecting, it is what he is planning. But something inside me makes me doubt his motive. How can I be sure that he is telling me the truth? “If you betray us,” I paused and pinned him with my deadly stares. “I will make sure to kill you,” I didn't hesitate to tell him that straight. Now, his smile came back from his lips, as if he was enjoying everything. I wonder if he could still smile once I punish him with my own hands. “Don't worry, Adira. You have my word. I will help your clan go back to where you used to be,” he said firmly. “Give him the contract,” I ordered, without removing my eyes. He signed the papers as agreement for his investment in our company. “Are you going to attend the Mask Battle?” He asked in the middle of signing the papers. “Yeah.” “I'm gonna be there, too.” As if I care. Of course, he would be there. Their clan is one of the powerful clans. “Together with your twin?” I asked. I remember that he has a twin, according to my father. He froze the moment I brought that up. His annoying smile widened again. “I'm not sure if he could go. You know, he's busy trying hard to accomplish a mission, in order to inherit everything we have.” He cackled, and it was surely a kind of mocking of his twin. I could tell that he is not on good terms with him. “I won't go easy on you, Adira.” He locked his gaze at me after signing everything. I only smirked. “You should wish not to be my opponent that night…” I went even closer to him. “I wouldn't want to kill my new investor,” I whispered. itsclarixassChapter 8“OUCH! WHAT THE HELL?!” Ace creamed deafeningly after I kicked his stomach. I was covered with sweat under the rays of the sun from above, chasing my breath. We are in the garden, doing training. I have to work myself out with the upcoming Mask Battle. “I am your brother!” He exclaimed again, still lying down on the ground, with his hand placed on his stomach. His face was crumpled, greeting his teeth simultaneously. “I got carried away,” I replied as I grabbed the bottled water on the table. I sat there for a while and hid from the sun. “Really? Look at Nathan,” Louis commented and showed me Nathan's face. I bit my lower lip and shrugged. “I was sure that my fist landed gently.” “It surely didn't,” Nathan uttered. “I have to train myself harder. As you said, that battle is not easy. Whoever would be my opponent, I have to win no matter what if I still want to live.” That battle should never be my death. “I give up. I don't want to be your punching bag for your prep
Chapter 9For a moment, I felt like I was dying when I forgot how to breathe. My eyes were pinned on Chase who was half-naked in front of me. The water was still dripping down from his soaked hair, down to his well-built body. We have a huge space between us, but I could smell his manly and addictive scent, fresh from the bath. To be honest, he looks so clean and fresh. I don't know if it is because he is still soaked from taking a shower, the reason why his entire body was sparkling in my eyes, or he is naturally like this. “U-Uhm…” I crumpled my hands when I stuttered. All my words vanished and I could not find any to tell him. I could not imagine what I look like right now; I regret barging in. “The training…we should start now,” I quickly looked away from him. When I did, I felt like I suddenly remembered how to breathe properly. I bit my lower lip in secrecy while I could feel my chest throbbing.“Oh, yeah. I was just preparing. Do you want to wait here? I will just dress up
Chapter 10My training with Chase continued in the next few days. I could say that I was getting better and Chase is always commending me with that. He taught me some of the things I could do to escape a hopeless situation. “Blood,” I muttered, after we were both able to hurt each other with the daggers. I left a cut on his cheek, and he did the same thing. But then, I am aware that it was not intentional. I could easily tell that he did that accidentally, based on his surprised face right now. I felt a glimpse of pain, but I did not mind. “I'm sorry,” the dagger fell from his grip. My lips parted when he moved so fast and ate the space between us just to wipe the blood on my cheek. “What are you doing?” My eyes widened when he removed his shirt. Before I could even complain again, I felt its cloth on my bruise as he started to wipe the blood very gently.I was stunned once again. My eyes were glued at him, watching him do that. His eyes look concerned as if I am so important to h
Chapter 11On the fifth day of my training with Chase, I was not able to get up on my bed anymore. Even if I wanted to, my body is refusing. My entire body feels heavy, along with my head that seems to be so big that I could not carry it. It was aching so much as if someone was slamming it. “Adira? Are you awake?” My brows crossed when I heard that voice outside my door. I could not find any strength to pull myself out of the bed. I coughed again while staring at the door. “Are you okay? Should I come in?” I recognized who it was when he spoke again. “Chase?” I asked, not feeling well. “Go away. There's no training today. I want to sleep a little bit mo—” my lips parted when he didn't let me finish anymore. He just came inside even though I didn't allow him to enter.“I said go away, are you deaf?” I coughed once again. “Are you sick?” He looks worried. “I'm fine. I just need to rest,” judging the time, I think it's still 4 am. This is the time we usually start to train. He di
Chapter 12We were both soaked already when we were able to find the old hut around. It was not big, but it can save us tonight. There's a small bamboo bed, good for two, and a lamp on it. “Do you have a lighter?” I asked when I found it. I was already shaking, starting to feel cold. “Yeah,” he said and quickly lit up the lamp. I blew a heavy sigh when I finally saw a light inside the hut. I paused when I noticed how he looked away from me, as if it would be a sin to stare at me right now. I became anxious in the back of my head. Do I look awful right now? I didn't even wear makeup today aside from my lipstick that is waterproof. “What?” I was confused.“D-Do you have extra clothes?” He asked, still could not look at me. What the hell? This is insulting! “I didn't bring one,” I replied. “Seriously, what the hell is your problem?! Do I look terrible?” “No, you're still beautiful.” I was lost for words again. That shut me up. Did he just admit that I am beautiful? And why do I f
Chapter 13The blinding rays of the sun woke me up the next morning. It was coming in through the small holes of the hut. I sat on the bamboo bed and began to stretch my body. “Damn, it hurts.” I mumbled. I never slept on this kind of bed before. This is the first time that I slept here, having no choice at all. I froze when I did not find Chade beside me. His bag was there so I am sure that he didn't leave me behind. I looked around and the rain finally stopped. However, the grass and land were still soaked, a hint that it rained a lot last night. “You’re awake,” my lips parted a bit when Chase appeared, topless. Before my eyes could even land on his damn abs, I moved my eyes away. He looks damn hot and I will not deny that. His hair was a bit messy, but right now, he looks like a damn model. “I fixed the car. We can go home now,” he said and wore the shirt beside me. I still can't look at him. Not just because he is topless, but because of what almost happened last night. He i
Chapter 14The next few days, Louis prepared all the clothes that we will wear for the upcoming party with the Oliveros, where they will announce their collaboration with us. I could say that their influence is somehow making us safe right now. There are no attacks yet, and I feel like we are at peace again. However, I can never let my guard down. I bent my back just to dodge Chase’ attack. I wouldn't want to be punched by that fist of him. I moved too fast and applied everything that he taught me. When I was able to get back on my feet, I grabbed his arm and kicked his stomach. His face crumpled, and I witnessed how pain filled him up. So, I took advantage of that and grabbed his arm once again before I pulled him down on the ground. I did what he once did to me. I made sure that he would feel the body ache that I have been feeling all along. “You won,” he muttered, chasing his breath. I smirked with victory as I shed the sweat dripping on my forehead. The party is just around the
Chapter 15“Let the battle begin again!” I stood up with no fear, holding a dagger in my left hand. I tilted my head a bit as I scanned my opponent in front of me. I knew at one glance that he was a man. Even with that mask, I knew that his eyes were piercing towards me, penetrating even my soul. It was a moment of silence. No one dared to break the ice. I stayed glued on the ground, not having any plan to attack first until the gun that he was holding fell from his grasp. I stared at it on the ground and what I was expecting to happen, happened. I knew that it was his technique to begin the battle. I am not dumb not to know that he was only trying to distract me. He threw a dagger on my way, aiming for my head. But then, I was keen enough to be able to avoid it and grab it with my one hand. When he saw that it was a failure, he ran towards me and I anticipated what he would do next. The crowd began to shout, cheering us, while their spirits were so awake with what they were watc
Chapter 30“I'm not marrying you,” I didn't know how I managed to look at him when I said those hurtful words. While staring at him, watching how he reacts, my heart was breaking into pieces. “I'm sorry, Otis.” That's all I could say. I don't want to break his heart, but I don't want to marry him, start a family with him, only to be lonely and lie to myself about what I really feel. “I don't want to live in regrets, Otis.” I looked away. “If I marry you, I'm sure that you will be a good husband. I already pictured you, treating me very well. But I also realized, what would I feel when that happens? Would I be happy in one roof with you? Perhaps, not… Because I do not feel anything for you, Otis. I love you, but as a friend.” “You'll learn to love me,” he said with strong desperation and determination. I could see pain running from his eyes but I can also see that he doesn't want to let me go that easily. “And if I don't?” I was killing myself every time I turned him down. “I don
Chapter 29It was our last day in Pangasinan. As we spent our last night in the hotel, we decided to watch a movie together with lots of food. This time, I didn't let him cook. Instead, we just ordered. “I have a favor to ask you,” I uttered in the middle of the movie. His brows raised but his eyes remained on the television in front of us. He was indeed having fun with the movie that we are watching. “What is it?” He asked, while eating the chips. “Can we keep this a secret?” The moment I mentioned that, I captured his eyes immediately. His eyes turned at me and I saw questions that filled his eyes. Perhaps, he was confused why I wanted to hide our relationship. “Why? Do you plan to marry Otis?” He chuckled, still taking everything as a joke. “Of course not,” I heaved a sigh. “I just want to hide this from them first. You know, I haven't had a boyfriend before and I don't want to shock them. Besides, I have to talk to Otis first and clarify all the things,” I explained. I bit m
Chapter 28I kissed him without any hesitation. It might be reckless of me, but I didn't care anymore. The moment I reached his lips beyond his tall height, I didn't think of anything. I disregard everything that matters. I disregard all my responsibilities in my hands. I only allowed myself to feel that moment—to enjoy that moment as we both shared another passionate kiss. I could not hear anything. I feel like we were deaf and we vanished from our worlds. I can't hear anything except from the loud beating of my chest. It happened so fast. I just found myself drowning from that kiss. My hands were wrapped on his nape and his hands were exploring my body simultaneously. “C-Chase,” I moaned. In a blink of an eye, I felt how he removed my bra as if it was just a piece of cake to him. I could say that he was an expert on these things. “Ohhh…” I kept moaning like an idiot. My eyes were closed with the sensation that was filling my system. I felt the cold wall as Chase pinned me there
Chapter 27Dawn. What is special with my second name? People usually hate their second names because it's ugly. As for me, I hate it for a reason. I despise it for a reason. I was born at dawn, and my mother died at dawn. After her death, it's like the world took me the beauty of dawn to the point that I don't wanna see it anymore. “Dawn,” but what is this that I am feeling everytime Chase calls me by that name? Why is my chest pounding as if he erased the cruel history I had? It was like music to my ears. Everytime he utters it, it makes me forget everything—the pain. “Stop it,” I muttered and smirked. I came back staring at the sea as I heaved a heavy sigh. “What? It's a beautiful name, just like you.” My cheeks burned when he said that naturally as if there was nothing wrong to say it in front of me. “What is it that you like about me, Chase?” I suddenly got curious about that. I don't see anything special to me for him to fall for me. I'm just the heiress of the Sanchez, tryi
Chapter 26I set up the table in silence. Chase was not talking as well after he told me not to marry Otis. I can feel the awkwardness that was invading the two of us. He served the food he cooked at the table and we started to eat together without saying a single word. We were crossing each other and looking away so fast. “Is it bad?” I was stunned when he finally broke the ice. I thought he's not gonna talk to me anymore. “Did I say that it's bad?” I sounded grumpy with that. I avoided his eyes to get rid of my conscience. “Look, I don't want you to feel like I am obliging you to like me, okay? I don't need you to give me an answer, too. If you will marry Otis, then I will accept it with all my hea—”“Shit, your saying a lot.” I complaint as I stood up since I'm done eating already. “I'm not marrying him,” I left him that answer before I started to clean some of the dishes. I couldn't help but to flash a huge smile when I saw how he was glued on his seat there as if he was still
Chapter 25It was a very passionate kiss. I never flew over the moon, but I felt like I was flying around the world when I felt Chase invading my lips. “C-Chase,” I moaned when he sucked my lips and I felt his hands travelling around my body while I was pinned on the wall. I could not tell him to stop, because I know that if I do that, I will kill myself. My eyes remained closed and I felt like I lost all my strength with my legs trembling already. Beyond the air conditioner installed in the entire hotel room, I suddenly felt so hot. In every touch of his body and skin on my body, I am losing my mind; and in every movement of his tongue and lips, I am losing my soul. “W-What… are we doing?” I managed to utter despite the feeling of losing myself already. I felt so lost in the woods but wanting to be lost at the same time. He stopped, and that was when I opened my eyes. Our eyes met immediately, and I knew that those seducing stares were melting me away. His forehead landed on mine
Chapter 24“I'm kidnapping you!” My jaw dropped when he said that and drove the car so fast. He's what?“Stop this now, Chase! You don't know what you're doing! Otis is waiting for me!” I keep shouting at him but no matter what I say and do, Chase has made his decision and it cannot be shaken. He didn't listen to me until I lost my hope and chose to be silent in the backseat. “They will look for me,” I uttered behind him. I don't know if I want this to happen or not. For some reason, I felt like staying there and being kidnapped by him is the good option to escape all of this. “Where are we going? Answer me, Chase!” I hit the back of his seat again but he remained unbothered. He really treated me like a damn wind until we arrived at our destination that I don't know. I fell asleep on the way. When I woke up, I heard the roaring of the sea. My lips immediately parted when I saw the sea outside. I found Chase sitting in front of the car while watching the water. “Chase!” I exclaim
Chapter 23I had already accepted my fate. Every night, I am trying to picture myself marrying Otis and starting a family with him. I know to myself that my heart is against it, but I have left with no choice. “You're meeting his family tonight?” Louis asked while we were in the middle of eating our breakfast.“Tell me if you need anything,” Ace said beside me, still worried about me. Weeks have passed and he's finally here with us. Dad didn't notice any bruises or wounds from him. He didn't know anything about what really happened. “I'm sure they will like you. Besides, you and Otis have been hanging out. Do you have feelings for him now?” I hate to ruin that huge smile from my father's smile. He looks so happy just by hearing about my upcoming wedding with Otis. How can I mess it up when he is this happy? “Not yet,” I moved my eyes away. I don't want him to see how much I am forced to do this. “Well, when you are married, you will learn to love each other.” I hope that is how i
Chapter 22Chase’s POV “Oliver, calm down! You can't just come here like this!” Jaylor kept calling me while I was taking huge steps, entering the building of Otis’ condominium.“Open the goddamn door, Otis!” I growled like a beast while I was slamming the door really hard. If he doesn't open this yet, I will probably break this. “You're making a scene, Oliver!” Jaylor exclaimed, but I was too deaf to hear him out. “OTIS!” The door opened and I finally saw my damn twin brother. His brows met when he saw me outside.“What do you need?” He asked coldly. “You,” “OLIVER!”I quickly threw a punch at him as I barged inside his condo. His eyes became sharp after what I did. “What the fuck is your problem?!” Before he could even punch me back, I punched him again, making his lips drip red fluid even more.I grabbed his collar as I pinned him on the wall. “Why did you ask her to marry you, huh?! What the fuck are you thinking?!” I was fuming mad. I could not even tame the beast inside
