I growl lowly as I think about the Vaals being slaughtered at this very second. Young males who are not even out of training and yet they are having to fight. I will make every dishonorable bastard on that rock bleed. Only cowards attack those too weak to win.
"They are going to keep hitting this area if we do not put fear into their hearts," Burk roars as Nole straps his knives to his thighs right beside me.
I can see the sweat glistening on my orange friend and I know his thoughts about our enemy mirror my own. We will give them nothing but death.
"Our brethren are dying right now! Jahns and Gafrops have attacked the Vaals stationed on the moon of Frole. Are you ready to defend? Are you ready to protect? Are you ready to tell these Beasts we will not succumb to their rule," Burk roars again as he paces the transport room?
"Yes, Commander," we shout as the technician finally presses the transport button.
A wash of color zooms past us and my body sinks into a crouch. As soon as our surroundings become solid a Jahn comes straight at Burk, but Nole is faster and pierces his heart with a direct hit.
"He was mine," Burk says, but I ignore them. My eyes are already scoping out the situation.
Dead bodies of Vaals and Jahns are littered in the dust around us. Our intel said there were Gafrops present in this attack as well but I don't see a single one. Maybe they are stationed above us.
There is a ridge about 80 yards from us that overlooks the valley in which the Vaals are fighting. We need to get past the main battle and we need to move fast before they can transport out or have reinforcements transport in.
"Get to the enemy's command. We kill anyone in our path," Burk orders loudly after silently coming to the same conclusion as me, and I move in to support Burk's back.
The others form a loose line and Nole heads straight for the high ridge. Immediately a group of Jahns rush toward us, but the surviving Vaals form a wall. The enemy crashes into them and blood splatters the torn terrain. Knives slice through flesh and groans from our comrades almost make me break rank.
Vaals are similar to Shikaz in coloring and stature. They are quick and good at stealth missions. And while they are both strong beings going up against a battalion of Jahns is suicide for them... especially since they aren't veteran warriors.
Suddenly the surviving Vaals yell. Even with their reduced numbers, they are pushing them out of our way. They are making a path for us. Very few Jahns are managing to meet our blades. Nole isn't even focusing on our enemy. His faith in our comrades is 100%, so I, too, switch my attention from them to the hill.
When we reach the steep terrain I dig my knives into the soil and propel up with my legs without looking back. Our backs are exposed to attack, but the Vaals have proven themselves in my eyes and I will not think less of them again. They aren't a band of inexperienced soldiers in need of rescue. They are warriors. They have our backs.
As we near the top, a weapon suddenly fires and I roar as the surprise blast rips through my armored shoulder. Nole yells angrily after hearing my pain, but I can't focus on him. I am in agony. I have never been hit by a blaster before only weak males or vulnerable females use them for defense.
I look down to find the top half of my shoulder gone and something snaps in my mind. My pain disappears, and white-hot rage instantly consumes me. My legs begin to move faster and the thirst for blood and vengeance becomes a physical taste in my mouth. Nole launches himself over the crest with Burk right behind him and I quickly follow. As soon as our enemy comes into view I smile. Nole is already avenging me and attacking the one with the blaster, and Burk is staring down ten feral-looking Gafrops. But my eyes are locked on the elder in the middle. Pilos!
The Gafropian Governor is here personally attacking."Elites! Pilso does not leave this rock," Burk shouts, and our comrades snarl loudly as they are told one of the leaders responsible for killing millions is here.
Burk heads right for the battle-hardened elder and I slice through the Gafrop and Jahn soldiers who try to block him. Nole works his way around the edge, and the rest of our unit begins an all-out brawl as surviving Jahns try to attack us from behind.
Pilso pulls his sword as Burk approaches, and Burk repositions the knives in his hands. I kill the last Gafrop and position myself close to the ground. My piercing eyes fix on the Gafropian leader. I have utter faith in Burk's skills but the elder is crafty. We have to ensure our victory here. If we do... the Gafropian forces will be in shambles. I can't get in Burk's way since my injury will slow me down, but I can provide backup. Nole will ensure none of the Jahns reach us.
"Using blaster guns...Growing weak, Pilso," Burk taunts, and the Governor flashes his long canines.
I snarl at the blatant threat. His fangs are long which shows his age and skill, but that doesn't matter. Not to us. His death is too valuable. His tactics might work on younger more inexperienced males, but not us. We have killed thousands together.
"My men do not reflect me, Hassin Commander, and when I mount your head on my wall next to the others who thought they could kill me, you will know that truth. I may be seasoned, but I am lethal," Pilso growls, and Burk attacks.
His metallic body moves around the Governor skillfully, but I keep my eyes focused on Pilso's weapon. I know Pilso will see an opening. He is too skilled not to. When he goes for the kill I will deflect it. I will provide Burk with the tiny window he needs to end our enemy. We have done the same tactic time after time.
Suddenly I see it. I see Pilso's knuckles tighten. I see the muscle in his forearm flex. I dart forward and position my uninjured shoulder right where his blade will be and duck my head down. Pilso's blade glides across my armor like a stone skipping across water. Pilso's eyes widen just in time to see Burk sink his blade into his throat. Pilso stares at us in shock before his body crumples to the ground in defeat. But we can't celebrate just yet.
Battle cries from our comrades pull us away from our victory instantly. Jahns are now flooding the ridge. The injured Vaals weren't able to keep them back any longer.
Burk heads to help our Elites and I rush toward two Jahns that are circling an injured Vaal. I slice the larger one's throat, and the Vaal manages to kill the second one. The soldier gives me a grateful nod as my eyes sweep over his body's current condition. Some soldiers can't handle war and they discover that during their first real taste of battle. I need to ensure he won't be a liability for me in this fight.
His breathing is labored and he has multiple stab wounds littering his brown skin, but he isn't wavering. His gaze is fixed and determined. He didn't run this way to escape the Jahns. He definitely chased the ones that followed us up the steep incline and fought to protect us until Pilso was dead. He might be injured and smaller than our enemy, but he is clearly a warrior who does not fear death.
I return his nod and refocus my eyes on the battle. Every battle we fight in might be our last and I feel honored to stand by someone so strong. He will make a good leader one day.
"Back to back," I shout and the kid immediately moves to follow my command.
"Slice their leg tendons first. It will bring them down to your level. Try to limit your strikes. Focus on instant kills. You are losing blood," I order as three bruised and bloodied Jahns rush us.
He doesn't say a word but I don't need him to. We are in this together. Either they die or we do. He can take my advice or ignore it. I will still fight beside him until the end.
**********
I exhale slowly as the doctor positions the cellular repair machine over my shoulder. He presses the necessary combination of buttons as I try to stay patient.
I hate doctors. They act as if they are so important. Like they are better than the soldiers they treat and I hate them for it. In my opinion, any technician could do his job. Sure he is trained to aid us without the machine, but that only requires a simple d******d of information to his brain.
He knows nothing about battle. About what it is like to receive a wound like this or to give one. He knows nothing about looking at dead comrades or the rage that comes from it. He might think he is in a more honorable position, but he isn't. He was just too afraid to sign up to fight. Too cowardly to risk his life. Too spineless to close the unseeing eyes of a dead battle buddy.
His yellow eyes meet mine and I know he can see my hate. Our people's eyes see so much more than what others do. He probably knows what I am thinking... Maybe that's why he dislikes me as much as I dislike him.
"You are healed. Congratulations on your victory Lieutenant," he says before removing the machine from my shoulder and walking away from me.
Blood and death immediately flood my field of vision. Flashes of the battle make me grind my teeth together. Yes, Pilso is dead, but so are 126 Vaal soldiers and 4 elite soldiers.
"Is it really a victory if all I saw was death," I growl too low for him to hear.
I stand up, determined to flee the clinic, before I angrily attack the doctor, and my bracelet beeps. I look down at it and see that the council's primary number is summoning me. Fear and adrenaline wash over me and I quickly press the white teleport button. Nole and Burk appear with me in the room which calms me. We have been summoned together, so that means we are most likely being debriefed, and there isn't another attack.
"Brothers," Burk mumbles, and we nod before looking at the door in front of us.
"Any idea why they called us? We need rest. Since Pilso is dead, I can't imagine there is another attack," Nole asks and I shrug.
I don't want to answer him. My mind is still focused on the battle. The young Vaal who fought by my side didn't survive and his death left a scar just like all the others before him. We even lost Nole's cousin. A Bronkark who we have bled with on countless occasions. I need time to bury my pain before fighting again or conversing like normal. I understand the council wants the information about Pilso's death to be fresh, but I am ready to be alone.
Nole falls silent after he reads my energy and we all refocus on the door. After a few minutes, a female Puelo finally opens it."Council member Hik has asked for the three of you," she says and we wordlessly follow her through the door.
Hik's role in the council is simple. He handles retirement and champion selection for the Harvest. Meeting with him is technically a good thing, but my brain still can't relax. The battle is still too fresh and my thoughts are miles away.
"Good day, soldiers," the female says as she opens a black door.
Burk gives her a respectful nod before we step into the councilors office.
"Ahh. There you are. The three males of the hour. Commander Burk, Captain Nole, Lieutenant Modok. Please sit down. I have terrific news," Hik says as soon as my body moves through the threshold.
His cheerful demeanor makes me want to flee, but I stay stoic. Nole shoots Burk a perplexed look, but he says nothing before sitting down across from the smiling Makskin. I follow Burk's lead and sit. I don't think our Commander knows why we have been summoned, so the quicker we sit down and listen, the faster we will get answers... The faster I can surround myself with darkness and forget today's events.
"I will get right to the point since you need rest. The three of you have been chosen for Harvest. You are now Tournament Champions. Your retirement is effective immediately. Congratulations," Hiks announces, and my eyes bulge.
My brain processes his words and my melancholy fades instantly. We are retired... Effective immediately. No more death. No more loss. We will get mates. We will start families. We will be able to become whole once more. Our service is over. We made it. We survived.
"Hell yes," Nole shouts as he jumps to his feet.
Happiness, as I have never felt before, explodes in my chest before I, too, jump to my feet. I clap Nole on the back, and we both look down at Burk, who seems frozen from shock.
"Who nominated us," Burk asks, and Hiks smiles at our Commander.
"Numerous soldiers have placed your names into selection, even before your victory today. Your unit has sung high praises for all three of you. Now with the death of Pilso under your belts...You three will be the talk of the Harvest," Hiks says, and Burk finally smiles.
He stands up slowly and I smirk. Burk is holding it together for the councilor's sake, but my well-trained eyes aren't fooled. Burk is exploding with excitement on the inside.
"Thank you, sir. We are honored to have been chosen," he says sounding like an honorable male, and Hiks nods.
"Transport is in two weeks. Rest up. Get your homes in order for your mates. Visit your families and get ready to be famous," Hiks says, and we manage to bow before leaving.
I grin as my eyes take in my family's home. I have missed them. Fighting has kept me from visiting for far too long. I straighten my new civilian clothes and switch my bag to my other hand. I take a deep breath and head for the door. I know my family is expecting me since it has already been announced I am a Gold Ranked Harvest Champion, but I didn't call. I needed time to process the last battle and come to terms with all the friends we lost. I stayed in my military-provided living quarters for a few days before transporting home to Gaimo. I refused calls from everyone and sat in silence like I always do after a difficult battle and funeral services. I needed it, but my mother and sister won't see it that way. As I near the door I begin to hesitate. Do I ring the bell or do I use my code and walk in? I haven't lived here in years... But before I can decide, the front door slides open, and I am met with my sister's angry face. "What the Kilkballs, Mo? Mom and I have been calling.
My body aches as I begin to regain consciousness. I have no idea how long I have been asleep, but my joints aren't happy. I try to open my eyes but the bright colors in the room make me close them again almost instantly. I can hear someone else in the room with me, but my mind is groggy. I try to lift my arm to rub my face and wince. Everything is still as sore as it was on Earth. Either they haven't healed me yet or the entire thing was a lie. Suddenly, someone touches my arm, and my eyes fly open. When I am able to focus I see a dark blue alien man with red eyes and hair looking at me, and I instantly scream. "Who are you," I demand in Mandarin, and he backs away as if afraid of me with his hands in the air. I try to sit up, but my arm gives out on me. The male tries to approach me, but I yell again. I don't want him anywhere near me. He is too tall and too large. I have no way of defending myself in my weakened state. He stops in his tracks and once again puts his hands up as if
"The other humans should be here already," Baalee says as she presses the button to open the door. The door slides open immediately, and my eyes skim the room. The two small humans sitting in the room full of colorful people are easy to spot. Baalee leads us toward them, and as we approach, I hear a bit of their conversation. "The Peulos come from a watery planet and like to swim. They are blue or green in color. Kea's are all around you. We are the most colorful. We view everyone as family and hate conflict. Fighting in this war is hard for our people. That is why Keas hosts the Harvest. We are the most trusted," the green Kea is saying to the caucasian human and my mind soaks up the information greedily. "Oh, look. The other humans have all arrived. That was faster than usual," the purple Kea says as she sees us approaching them over the human girl's shoulder. All the heads at the table turn toward us at her announcement and I lift my chin a little. My back straightens even more
I silently glance around at the colorful walls as Liamee leads me to the room I am supposed to be staying in. The other girls will be in the same hall as me, and I pray they leave me alone for the evening. I have so much to think over. "Here is your room, Xiu," Liamee says as she comes to a halt. The door slides open and my lips tilt up as soon as I see the luxurious space. At least the room I will call home is nice and calming. "I see you like it," Liamee says as she looks over my expression. I smile at her and nod. "Well come in. Let me show you some of the things that might be different than Earth," Liamee says and I follow her inside the big room. She glides around pointing at things, but I only half listen. My eyes are making their own assessments as she talks. The linens are nice, the rug is expensive, the artwork is simple, and the touches of red make me happy. The sitting chairs look comfortable, but the bed looks overly plush and I know it will hurt my back by day t
I sip my tea silently as the other girls talk amongst themselves and laugh. I don't often partake in their social activities, but I have come to like my fellow Harvestees. They are all sweet and openly fond of each other. They aren't like the cutthroat businessmen my father was grooming me to shut down. We have been here on Kea for a week and I have studied every scrap of material Liamee has brought me. I have learned about each of the planets in the Allied forces and I have narrowed down which planets I could see myself potentially calling home. Now I just have to wait until the actual tournament begins. "Xiu, what do you think," Krystal asks and my eyes snap to her face. I didn't catch what Jia and her were talking about. I was too focused on fantasizing about my future. "I am sorry. I wasn't listening to the topic," I admit and Krystal sighs before pointing her finger at Jia. "Jia thinks we should ask for a larger tour of Kea. I said we shouldn't focus so much on Kea since the
"You still haven't found a place," Nole asks as he downs another shot of Cok alcohol. I shake my head. The tournament is six days away and I have yet to find a suitable home for my future mate. "Not knowing what species she will be is making me hesitant. I don't know what her preferences will be," I say before taking my first shot. The strong liquid scorches a path down my throat, but I keep my face blank. Cok liquor is strong and requires a strong stomach, but we have been drinking it for years. "Just pick something fancy, but easily defendable. I found a place two days after we were retired," Nole says with a slight slur and I notice his orange skin looks blotchy. He beat me to the bar so who knows how many shots he took before I arrived. But blotchy skin means he has reached his limit. "Slow down. You have had enough," I say to my friend, and he grunts but doesn't reach for another. "Are you more nervous than you are letting on? Drinking that much before I even arrive.
Liamee glances at me again, but I ignore her. I know she is trying to read past my carefully placed mask, but I won't let her. Ever since Liamee broke my trust I have stopped sharing my personal feelings with her. I am still nice and respectful, but I no longer share how I feel."I hope you like your dress. We tried to mimic each one of your home countries with the first dress. Day one is the only day you can wear separate colors. Tomorrow, you and the others will all be dressed in similar styles and colors. What do you think," Liamee asks as we walk toward the gathering hall that will be used for our introductions?I nod."My dress is lovely. The red color is perfect," I answer and she surprises me by grabbing my hand. When my eyes connect with her's my heart constricts. She looks like she is on the verge of tears and I know I have hurt her feelings yet again."Xiu, please. I am sorry. I wanted you to bond. I know I pushed too far, but aren't you even a little grateful? Zuri and Fiad
"They were nice," Fiadh says softly as we walk away from the table of Puelos. And my annoyance grows. I liked the blue women just as much as they did, but there is no point in getting invested in their culture. We have no hopes of ever living on Puelo since none of the competing males come from their planet. "They were," Krystal says and my composure snaps. "They don't have a competing male. Meeting with them was practically pointless," I say a little too forcefully, and Zuri's face tells me I went too far. "Nevertheless, they were nice," she says while looking at me with raised eyebrows. I immediately cave. Everything Liamee said before this all started has been playing in my head. I don't want to drive my only friends away. I just want this to go perfectly for all of us. I want each of us to end up with the best so we will be well taken care of. I nod and bow my head. "I apologize, Fiadh. They were pleasant," I say sincerely and Jia giggles before shooting Zuri a wink. "Co
I sit down on the bench and close my eyes. Fighting a bronkark won't be easy, but I promised Xiu. I vowed to win for her, so I will do what I do best. I will move quickly and find openings with my sharp eyesight. I will win before he has the opportunity to land a fight-ending blow. He seems like a simple male. He will most likely start swinging instantly. I only have to dodge and peel apart his defense. I will ensure I get to choose the female I want and we will enjoy the rest of our lives together. "Tilk is good. You are better," Nole says and I open my eyes as my big orange friend takes up the rest of the bench beside me. "Do I look worried," I ask and he smirks. "You look like you are strategizing," Nole says and it's my turn to smirk. Nole and Burk are the brothers I never had. We might look different and our styles might be opposite, but they are my family. They are the people who mean the most to me... until Xiu and I mate that is. Not even my mother, father, or s
As the song ends, Moor gives me another easy grin and offers me his arm, but before I can take it, Modok appears beside him. "Xiu of Earth, I would be deeply honored if you allowed me to escort you back to your room," Modok says, and Moor seems to straighten his spine. He glances to the other side of the room before looking back at me and I realize he has decided I am not worth the trouble of fighting Modok. He has another female. Our dance together and conversation were nice, but I didn't win him over completely. I bow my head a little toward Moor before wrapping my arm around Modok's elbow. Modok covers my hand with his own and immediately walks away from Moor. "I'm glad he surrendered his claim to you. I would have destroyed him in the tournament," Modok says and the gravelly tone of his voice sends a satisfying chill down my spine. Modok just admitted that he would fight for me. Something no one has done for me not even my Father. Father always provided for me, not for my
"I am happy you have been cured... How many children would you like to have one day," I ask as I extend my arm and twirl her. Her elegant body spins beautifully, and when my arm brings her back in, I don't keep her at a respectful distance. I pull her in close, and when her chest meets mine, my world seems to stop. I hold her to me tight, but gentle as I look down into her dark eyes. She is an absolute wonder. Her flawless pale skin and perfect cupid bow have captivated me. Every curve on her body looks delicate and fragile, but there is a fire just behind her dark eyes that I want to dive into. I knew I liked how the females from Earth looked, but I never imagined one of them would call to me so strongly. I guess Nole was correct when he said our instincts would know who was meant to be our mates. "Xiu, a human from Earth," I whisper in absolute wonder. The song ends, and I know my time with her is up, but I plan on being the one to escort her back to her room, so parting wit
I twist my hands anxiously. It's just Fiadh, and I left. I might not get asked to dance this round which isn't a good sign. I have seen some males talking on the sideline with comrades. Maybe they are taking a breather and thinking over their first two dances. Maybe they have already narrowed down who they want to fight for. It makes sense number-wise that some of us wouldn't get asked... or does it mean they won't even waste a dance on someone they know they aren't interested in? Or maybe the partner they do want is already dancing. I can feel my chance of getting chosen by an honorable, and prestigious male slipping through my fingers. I draw in a shaky breath just as someone gives my shoulder a light tap. I turn around fully intending to see Fiadh, but the man standing behind me makes all my thoughts about failure disappear. The breath I was taking leaves my lungs and my cheeks begin to heat up. "Good evening. I am Lieutenant Modok from Gaimo. Would you honor me with a dance,"
"Any luck," Nole asks as he reaches my side. I glance at him for only a second. He is out of breath and it's clear he rushed back to my side to report on his experience with the Puelos. In between each song, we have a minute and thirty seconds to escort our old partner back to her group and choose another partner to dance with. The pace is rapid but it keeps the evening moving along without conflict. Many champions have complained over the years about how short our time is with each female, but the Keas have been strict. They know some females or males might be more desirable and they have to keep it fair amongst everyone. No one gets more or less time. It eliminates the threat of disagreements. "No. She wasn't the one. But the Keas seem to be a variable option," I reply and he nods. "The Puelos are too status driven. I will approach Shikaz next," he responds, and I peel my eyes off the group of returning humans. "I doubt you will have better results. At dinner, they seem
"Wow," Jia says quietly as the Keas efficiently change the large room from dining hall to dancing hall. "Very pretty," Fiadh whispers back and Krystal nods. I let my eyes travel over the line of champions, discreetly trying to see if anyone is looking at me in particular, and I am surprised to see a champion from Cok smiling at me. His gaze is practically fixed on me and I know he will be the first one to ask me to dance. "The rest of the evening is all about enjoying each other's company and getting to know one another on a more intimate level. Have fun," the male Kea says, and I watch the Cok champion as he cuts across the floor toward me. "Would you care to dance with me?" he asks as soon as he stops in front of me, and I nod slightly. I hear someone asking Zuri to dance as well, but I don't glance over. I need to focus on my opportunities at the moment. My friends will be just fine during this part of the tournament. He offers me his sand-colored arm and I drape my hand ov
I take another bite of food and discreetly look at the females across from me again. They seem to be less nervous now that most of the champions are busy eating, but the one in the white dress still looks a little too anxious for my liking. It's as if she is waiting to be attacked. The brown-skinned female who looks as if she is from Vaal instead of Earth, keeps glancing at her too. I swallow my bite of Makskin gult and reach for my drink. I have looked over all the females here and I have decided I like the look of the female humans. Each of them is uniquely beautiful. Plus they keep checking on one another just like my comrades and I do when we are in a difficult situation. That kind of behavior is something I can relate to. I also like the thought of mating a female from Kea. They are cordial and beautiful a hundred percent of the time. The Puelos and the Shikaz ladies are very beautiful also, but they might only care about my status. I will have to pick their behavior apart
As I walk into the large room I take in the new tables and atmosphere instantly. The colored tables have been removed, and elegant lights are now hanging from the ceiling giving the room a more romantic feel. Two long tables are now running the length of the ballroom, and the female side of the room is already filling up. I quickly find a spot against the wall and avert my eyes from the door. If, by chance, they seat us randomly, I don't want to risk sitting next to my gorgeous friends. While their words from lunch were wonderful it doesn't change the fact they could hinder my match. No one looks at me as I take my spot, and I realize no one looks as confident as they did during lunch. They actually look as nervous as I feel. Suddenly I spot Krystal heading my way. I try to hide, but it's too late. My bright-colored dress is like a draw. "What," Krystal demands after reaching my side and evaluating my face. I sigh. I know that I am about to hurt her feelings, but I have to
"They were nice," Fiadh says softly as we walk away from the table of Puelos. And my annoyance grows. I liked the blue women just as much as they did, but there is no point in getting invested in their culture. We have no hopes of ever living on Puelo since none of the competing males come from their planet. "They were," Krystal says and my composure snaps. "They don't have a competing male.
