Matt
It was bad enough that I couldn't discourage Claire from going back to the murderer's house; I also had to deal with my jackass business partner Nathaniel, who just wouldn't stay away from Abigail. Don't get me wrong, I know she doesn't belong to me and she's a free woman; yet it's so annoying to see him all over her.
Abigail doesn't even like him! I mean, she's definitely not entertaining his flirting.
But, it would have been a whole lot better if she was speaking properly to me. Forget about speaking properly, she was clearly avoiding me; speaking formally to me, barely touching me. In fact, she only made physically contact with me when she pushed me out of Claire's room, every other time, she either looked away from me or spoke with monosyllables.
I didn't know what her deal was and she also refused to tell me. I felt I did something wrong, but how do I apologise for something I don't even know about?
I walked away to the window and turned to my phone to try distracting myself by calling Nick. I had asked him earlier to follow Claire and make sure nothing goes wrong. I couldn't get over the feeling that it wouldn't be safe for her.
Nick picked up.
"I know what you want to ask and the answer is no. Nothing bad has happened. The kids are just looking through stuff."
"Okay. Keep me updated. Did Ross give you the gun?"
"Yeah, and you know I've never used that outside practice."
"You'll do fine. I don't think you'll need it though, but if you do, you're a good shot."
"Fine. I'm hanging up." He hung up.
I turned back to Nathaniel and Abigail; his lips were really close to her ear. WTF?! I turn away for two seconds and he's all over her? And why wasn't she pushing him away? I knew she could easily destroy his groin if she wanted.
I was confused.
Abigail never lets Nathaniel this close to her and why won't the jackass just leave? The meeting has been over for twenty minutes now. We were the only ones in the boardroom.
"That's enough." Abigail snapped. Now that's better! Break his nose or something, he's not that important anyway.
"Abby..."
"It's Abigail and I've told you before, this is no place for such mindless flirting." She said as she j my more appropriate. A restaurant, a bar, wherever you want."
"I'm not interested." She said solemnly. Nathaniel inched closer to her, giving her a seductive smile.
"How can you say that, Abby? I've been pouring my heart out to you for over a year now. You're not romantically involved with anyone, so what's the problem?" As his hand was going for her chin, I rushed over to grab it with one quick stride.
"If she said she's not interested, then she's not. I've been quiet and let you do as you please, but it's enough now. This should be..." He jerked his hand away.
"Why are you so bothered? She's not your wife and she's even barely your employee. I mean, what could you possibly pay her? She's worth a billion already."
I got mad.
"Don't..."
"Stop." Abigail spoke above us. "Mr. Newman, you can't speak to my boss that way. We can't talk about personal matters here and..."
"Go on a date with me and I'll never bring our personal matters here again."
"She..."
"Alright, I will."
"Really?"
"You what?" Nathaniel and I said in unison. Abigail avoided my eyes.
"I'll go on a date with you Mr. Newman. Can I have your phone, please?" While they exchanged private numbers, I was still too stunned to mutter any word. It was until Nathaniel left as a happy jerk, that I was able to find words.
"What just happened?"
"Mr. Newman left." She said simply and turned to her wristwatch. "We need to go over the Boston files..."
"Don't you dare talk about work right now. You just agreed to go on a date with that jackass."
"Yes, I did. Is that a problem?" A second wave of shock hit me. WTH?! Did I drop into an alternate universe where Abigail and I are not friends?
"You don't even like him."
"I do. I like his eyes and he's always being nice to me." I shook my head, as if resetting my reasoning.
"This is insane. If you like him that much, why didn't you go out with him all these while? This isn't the first time he has asked you out; this isn't even the hundredth time he's asked you out. So, why now?"
"Because I want to. I still don't understand, why is this a problem?" Yeah, what's my argument? She is a free woman any way. Yet...
"It's hard to process. You've never liked Nathaniel, you said he's annoying."
"That's before I developed a liking for him."
"Developed a..." I paused. "Are you just trying to get me mad? Oh, I know! You're trying to get me jealous." She met my eyes, harsh.
"And why would you be jealous? I'm not your girlfriend or your wife; I'm just your best friend, right?"
"Why are you saying that like it's a bad thing? You don't want to be anymore?"
"Yes, I don't!" She snapped. That's when the third wave hit me and this time, it left a large hole in my heart.
"Why?" My voice was barely audible. My ears were still ringing with her last words.
"I have to go." She turned around sharply to reach for her handbag, but I beat her to it, grabbing her hands and turning her to me. She kept her eyes down.
"You need to answer me. You've been acting strange since yesterday and you've refused to tell me what's wrong. If you want to end our relationship of forever, then you at least owe me an explanation." She slowly looked up at me.
"I owe you? Matthew, I've offered everything I have to you. I have nothing left... you've left me with nothing."
"What are you talking about? I've given you everything too. My..."
"Yes, everything except..." The ringing of my phone cut her off. She jolted as if pulled out of a trance. I quickly reached for the phone. Nick.
"I have to take this." I said hurriedly as I picked up, letting go of her.
"There's a problem." My heart skipped a beat.
"What happened?"
"Frank suddenly appeared and there was a confrontation. I shot him in the leg but he escaped and Claire's unconscious with a broken arm." Fuck!
"The hell?! You were right there... how could you have let Frank hurt her?"
"Frank didn't touch her. There was shuffling and she was caught in the middle of it. I only looked away for a second to take a call and all hell broke loose. Look, I'm sorry about this. I'm taking her home right now."
"Okay, I'll be right there." I hung up and turned to Abigail, but she was gone.
Damn it!
I made my way out of the company, trying not to attract any attention as I made for my car.
When I got home, Nick's car was nowhere to be found. I called him back.
"Where are you?"
"Chill, Charlotte isn't a minute drive. I'll get there as fast as I..." A pause.
"Claire won't come home today." I heard Antonio's voice instead of Nick's.
"Why not? She needs medical attention. She has to..."
"I've already arranged that. Her uncle will take care of her for the night, you just have to take care of James and make sure he doesn't suspect a thing."
"I don't understand."
"James has Schizophrenia. Stuff like this triggers it and it's bad for him. Just lie to him that Claire misses Tyler or something. Just don't let him miss her."
"You're right. But I have a question for you Antonio."
"I know already. Believe me, I didn't see anything. Jacey did but she wasn't clear when she told us; you know how she can be. I'll fix Claire, I promise. Don't worry about her, she's fine." He hung up.
I took a few minutes to collect my thoughts and plan a way to distract James, before going into the house. If I'm lucky, I'll have a few hours before James starts asking questions.
"Dad!" Yup! No luck there. James was right behind the door, all dressed up for a stroll with Nanny Reggie. I caught him as he ran up to me for a hug.
"Hi! Going somewhere?"
"Mhmm. Nanny and I are going strolling. Claire isn't back yet, but Nanny says she'll be back before we're done with our stroll." Exactly what I was avoiding.
"Urh, she won't come back today." His face fell immediately.
"Really? But..."
"Don't worry, she'll be back early tomorrow. She just wanted to spend some time with Tyler."
"Not fair! I want to see Jane too."
"You... you will. You'll see Jane soon. You know what? Why don't we invite Jane for a playdate this weekend?"
"Yes yes yes!!!" He scurried down and went to repeat what I said to Reggie.
"Dad? Can you call Abigail? I want her to stay with me tonight." Urh, what now? She's clearly upset, she wouldn't want to be anywhere near me right now. I was busy thinking up a lie when Reggie's phone began to ring.
"It's Ma'am Abigail." Yeah, it's definitely not my day.
"Yay! Gimme, gimme, gimme." Reggie picked up and handed the phone over to James.
"Hi, Abigail." A pause. "I'm okay. But Claire won't be home tonight and I like the way she reads to me. Can you come read to me? You can tuck me in! Please?" A long pause. "Yay! Thank you." He barely handed the phone over to Reggie before skipping around happily.
"Abigail is coming!" And I have an unfinished business with her.
As expected, Abigail focused solely on James and I didn't get any chance to talk to her at all. I didn't want to say anything in front of James but I needed to know what her problem was. When she wouldn't give me even the tiniest attention, I left them alone and stayed in my study room burying myself in work.I called Antonio again and asked how Claire was doing. She was still unconscious. It worried me but since Antonio assured me she'll be fine, I had to wait for morning; no matter how tormenting it was. Usually, it's times like this I have Abigail beside me. Now, I'm alone and Abigail somehow hates me. We've never argued before so seriously, never. It felt as if we're just going around in circles.I couldn't remember doing anything wrong, so why did she want to break up? Why am I saying breakup? We're not dating, right? Do I want to date her though? Yeah, definitely. Forget about dating, I want to marry her. She's the only person I want by my side every second.
ClaireWhen I awoke, rays of sunlight were already peeking through the curtains. I sheepishly yawned and stretched on the bed, absentmindedly reaching for Antonio. He wasn't there."I might as well get up." I turned to the bedside clock, it was already past 7 am.I went to the bathroom to wash my face or maybe shower, but I didn't want to wear my old clothes on a clean body. Luckily for me, there were clean clothes on the bathroom sink with a sticky note on it. It wrote: 'It's a good thing we're the same size. You won't mind me lending you this, right? Tyler'. How sweet of him! I held up the tee-shirt and skinny jeans; definitely guy fashion but they would do. With little touch ups here and there, no one would guess they belonged to a guy.I took a quick bath and dressed up; I knotted the tee shirt at the side to fit me more and pulled up my hair in a loose ponytail. For all it's worth, I looked ready for a jog at the park.
I was so thankful when we pulled into my Dad's house. Dad stopped the car at the entrance and turned to me. "James believes you spent the night at your Uncle's because you missed Tyler. Nick dropped by with the stuff you got from..." He didn't finish that statement and turned to Antonio instead. "Lucy's here, she knows about yesterday. What did you see?" Antonio quickly put up a hand to his cheek, looking down. "She's in a bad mood, I'll definitely get slapped." "Then I guess I'll try to slow her down while you make a run for it." Dad said with a grin. I was like, totally confused. What were they talking about? "Too late, she's coming." I looked up at the entrance and Aunt Luciana was really coming towards us; James was behind her. That wasn't important; what I wanted to understand was, how could Antonio know that when he's been looking down?! "Seriously, Claire, not now." He snapped at me. Uhm, excuse me? "I didn't even say anything."
I decided to mind my business and finish my meal. Antonio did the same, although he had a huge frown on his face."What happened?" Aunt Luciana was by the door, looking disappointed."We had an argument about Dad." Antonio's reply was nonchalant."I've told you, don't indulge her. Jacey is fragile and this whole situation is not easy for her." Antonio threw away the egg he was about to eat and got up so fast, his stool fell over."You know, I feel like you care about everyone else more than you care about me. I'm a boy, I need to protect Claire, but you didn't think that I could have gotten hurt there as well. Rather than scolding Jacey for hiding important stuff from us, you want me to be less normal and do more. Now, Jacey is fragile and this whole situation is not easy for her, what about me? I'm an outsider, right? You don't think it affects me?" No one needs to be told how hurt Antonio felt; his voice was really pained. Aunt Luciana couldn't even say
Few minutes later, I had barely just finished brushing my hair and smearing lip gloss on my lips when Emma came in."Ooh! Someone looks pretty." She teased. I suddenly felt stupid. Why did I take Antonio's advice and dress up for Jason? He's definitely crazy if he thinks I can date my cousin and I'm more crazy to actually patronize him."Going somewhere? Because you have a visitor downstairs and he's so cute! Are you two going out? Is he your...""Cousin!" I shrieked. What the fudge is going on around here anyway?!"He's my cousin.""Aww, too bad. You two would have made a nice couple." Emma said almost sadly."Emma?!""I'm just saying." She laughed. "He's waiting for you though.""Okay, I'm heading down now." I took one last look at myself in the mirror before leaving my room to go find Jason downstairs. I forgot to ask Emma where he was and goodness knows I still don't know my way around the house yet."Claire!" That was Jacey; running up to me with a bi
"Did you forget you told me you were going to bring SM to the green house?" I shuddered. I just heard Jacey's voice in my head! What the actual crap?"If he leaves without seeing me first, I'm going to scream in your head non-stop!" What the..."Urh, Ja...Jason!" I grabbed his hand as he stood up to leave. "Maybe you should stay a few more minutes, there's someone who'd like to meet you.""Who?""My cousin, Jacinta.""Urh, okay..." I looked around to find the green house. Jacey said the fountain was by the green house, that would mean that the glass building with lots of plants in it was the green house. And here I was thinking it was a house painted green."How dumb!" Jacey said in my head."Shut up!" I mumbled."What was that?""Heh, nothing." I smiled awkwardly at Jason and let him to the green house. It was mostly plants and flowers but Jacey made a space for herself in the rose section; she had a little table covered with a dark quil
Matt It's two days before Lucy's divorce. She's been acting all calm about it but I don't need to be a psychic to know just how she feels, especially now she's had a big fight with Antonio and he's leaving her after the divorce is final.I don't know what caused the fight but it's the first time in all of Antonio's fourteen years he's angry with his mother. If it was Jacey, then I'd understand because she was more of the hotheaded one like her jerk of a Dad. Antonio has always been mindful of his temper and his words too; if he'd ever get upset, he would just walk away and after some time, he's back to his usual self.Maybe the divorce was getting him stressed out or maybe he'd just want his parents to remain together. I mean, who would want their parents divorced if they could help it? But I vote for them getting divorced;Thomas doesn't deserve my sister at all. He just wanted her for as long as it brought good publicity for him. Now that Ingrid is
"I just want you to make friends and have a normal teenhood. I'm just trying to look out for you.""My Dad abandoned me when I was ten, my mom then married a psychopath who abused us, four years later she is murdered by her husband, now my Dad is back again and I'm hearing that I might be a psychic! Please tell me, how I can have a 'normal teenhood'?!" I chose to stay mute; I mean, what could I say to that? She's already angry, there's no need to provoke her further."Do you like art?" I asked as a thought came to my mind. She glanced at me , then shrugged."Probably, I haven't seen much. I love photography and I sometimes wonder what my pictures would look like if I paint them instead." She loves photography? That's great, it was a favorite hobby for me as a kid."Photography is awesome! Would you want to learn more about it? Travel and take pictures? What kind of pictures do you take? Landscapes? P
I was standing in the parking lot, away from the couple I was staring at. Jason... He was holding a brunette's hand... and that hand had a diamond ring on its ring finger. He was freaking engaged?!My heart pounded deeply in my chest. I was too late? But... he was my soulmate, right? Wrong. Probably the same time I stopped believing in soulmates was the same time he seized being mine.He was smiling so fondly at the brunette and I couldn't see her face but I knew she had a big smile as well. "You have no right to be sad... You have no right to be sad..." I kept muttering to myself, over and over again as I worked up the courage to leave there."I don't believe it! It's Claire Wagner!" I stilled when I heard a lady shriek. Other students stopped to stare at me and a few began making their way towards me.I diverted my eyes back to Jason, he and his brunette were staring at me, he looked confused.I turned around and bolted for my car, driving out of the campus. Some crazy fans ran af
"Hey single lady, come home." I kept staring at my phone. What the actual hell? That jerk has been ignoring me for the past two years and just a few minutes after my boyfriend broke up with me, he sends a text?!I was furious and sad and relieved... God! I just wanted to hug my cousin so badly!Judy's call came in before I could reply to Antonio's text; she had been my personal assistant since I moved to Paris. Emma couldn't come with me because she wanted to be a full time Mom to Shelby and she did say she was getting married in a month to a guy she met.I didn't try getting close to Judy though, she just wasn't as free with me like Emma used to be, she just wanted our relationship to be professional and I didn't mind at all.Of course she wouldn't be calling if she knew I was on a date with Archie, but I didn't tell her and she probably thinks I've disappeared.I picked up."Hey, Judy.""Hello. Where are you?" See that? She's so uptight."I was originally on a date with Archie but I
"There's my girl!" Archie cheered, hugging me and kissing me firmly on my lips. "I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the award show but I'm proud of you nevertheless." I moved aside to let him into my apartment and he went straight for the glass plaque I had left earlier on the breakfast table."It looks great. Breakout Star, Claire Wagner." Yup! That's me. The newest eighteen year old who has been working her ass off for the past two years, juggling three careers as a model, actress and my all time favourite, a photographer. It hasn't been easy and I can't stress how many times my parents have told me to take a break and come home just to relax, but I've been stubborn like always. Working keeps my mind away from depressing stuff like worrying about Jason who I haven't seen in the last two years and he doesn't even have a social media account, I mean, who doesn't have a social media account? And even Antonio! That dumb jerk gave a stupid excuse and avoided attending my parents wedding, he'
"Will you be my maid of honour?" I was staring back at Mom, waiting for her to say she's just kidding but she was really waiting for my answer."Me?!" I was surprised. "Are you sure? What about Alice?" I said, gesturing to the other woman who sat next to me on the lounge."I'm married and even if I'm not, you should be her maid of honour." Alice replied before Mom could."Yes, Claire, I want you to be my maid of honour. I can't think of anyone better than you." I was flattered, but of course I wouldn't be if I had seen it before now, but my wacky abilities have deserted me for a while now; even after an entire week after I woke up, I still can't tell the future."Yes!" I said excitedly and Mom hugged me immediately, sighing in relief."Thank you. You know what? This calls for a celebration. How about all three of us hang out together? Like a girls' day out. We could go to the spa, get makeovers, manis-pedis, new hairdos...""Okay that sounds like a mother-daughter outing and I already
"Are you insane?!" Antonio half-yelled at me. I pretended not to hear him as I ate my birthday cake. After Archie was done with his call, he told everyone we were dating and though my parents weren't so thrilled about it, everyone was cool with it."You can't go from being in love with Jason to being Archie's girlfriend.""I can and that's what I'm doing." I said nonchalantly."Claire, you can't do that.""Why? Archie likes me to bits and I think he's totally lovable, hence, we're dating. And don't forget we already told our parents and they are okay with it.""Your Dad wasn't okay with it, he knows you should be with Jason, he's just being nice.""Which I expect you to be too. Archie is a great guy and Jason is far from my reach anyway. To be honest, I don't think I would have any feelings for Jason if not for that soul mate bullshit.""Bullshit?! Is this why you shut me out? Because you're harbouring crazy thoughts like this?" Antonio was pissed, I knew that but I wasn't going to le
"That went well." I stilled when I heard Antonio's voice behind me. What was he doing in my room? "Did you forget I can tell the immediate future? I knew the surprise would be ruined and you'd lock yourself up here." Oh, well.I sank to the floor and just hugged my legs. "You're sad, I get it. But look on the bright side...""There's not bright side here, Antonio. I love him yet I told him to get lost. Who does that?!" I hugged my legs tighter. Antonio came over and sat next to me."I don't know what to tell you, all I see is you spending the next two years missing Jason while you figure your life out." Two years?!"It's going to take that long?""You can't see your future?""I can't see anything, my abilities are messy right now. I can only tell the present and read someone's mind.""I see. That's probably because you haven't healed completely from the accident." I sighed."That's not important to me. I'm going to spend a full two years without Jason? Will we ever get back together?
"Claire?! Wait!" I didn't listen to Jason, I kept walking until I got to the car. He caught up to me."What happened? Are you okay?""I want to go home. Can you take me home?" I avoided his eyes."Yes, but what really happened? Did my mom say something...?""Just forget it. Like I said, I'm tired." He exhaled and unlocked the car. We both got in.I didn't say anything while he took me home, I could very well feel his eyes on me, but I kept my eyes away from him all the time."Look, I'm sorry about my Mom, I'm definitely sure she said something to you. She can be a little uppity sometimes but..." Oh, he got that one right."Don't apologize, she didn't do anything wrong.""Oh, okay." We were quiet for a few minutes more. I knew what Antonio expected me to do, break it up with Jason; and the easiest way to do that is when he thinks I don't remember him. I didn't want to, I really didn't want to but Jason has a lot planned out for himself and I'm just a roller coaster of drama and danger,
"Claire?!" I turned away from Jason to Aunt Miriam.Uncle Mark's family was all the distraction I needed to get my mind off Jason... and his lips. Well, at least for the meantime.Kevin was an adorable kid, he looked every bit like Aunt Miriam and Jane tried acting a bit mature to impress me, but she was still the cute little girl I know. Of course they were glad to have me, especially Tyler, it wasn't even as if I've been in a coma for years, they acted like I've only been gone for a week.Uncle Mark was happy Renee got what she deserved but he didn't know about my abilities, none of them did and I wondered why Dad didn't say anything. There are family after all."You ready to go? Mom's expecting us now." Jason whispered to me. I was playing dress-up with Jane and Aunt Miriam."Yeah." I apologized to Jane and Aunt Miriam, I had to promise to return before they let me go and I was back in the car with Jason."So, you said your Mom lives with her dogs, right?""Yeah.""Did she explain
It's my birthday? I pulled away to check my phone, it was really the second day of April. I'm sixteen!I crushed Antonio in another tighter hug, excited."I'm sixteen!""You sound like you've waited a long time for that, even after you skipped two whole years." I ignored Antonio's teasing and got off the floor."I'm happy because I finally remember Jason and now that I'm sixteen, my Dad won't mind me dating some..." A knock on the door interrupted me."Uhm, Claire? Can we talk?" It was Jason. I made for the door but Antonio blocked my path. Great! They still had a beef."It's not about that, trust me." Antonio said in a whisper. "You've regained your memories, I have no reason to stay mad at him, it wasn't even his fault to begin with. I'm stopping you because you can't tell Jason you remember him. Pretend you don't remember him, I have a reason." That's crazy! I just hurt his feelings out there and two weeks ago, I was about to tell him how I feel about him, why do I have to stop now
