Leo lounged on the couch. "You're back early today," he remarked.
"If that red car hadn't snagged my spot, I'd have been home even sooner. Had to sort that out first," I grumbled, mentioning Elisa's car.
Leo's eyes narrowed a bit, and he stuttered, "Probably just someone who parked in the wrong place."
"It'd be nice if they thought about that," I said, searching through my bag. I pulled out a wrapped watch, and despite Leo's hopeful gaze, I tossed it in the trash.
His face froze. "What did you throw away, Babe?"
"Some garbage," I said curtly.
"What is it?" he pressed.
"I said, some garbage," I replied firmly.
Leo sat up, his expression turning cold. "Valentine's Day is tomorrow, and you're pitching a fit now?"
"You smell like you just had sex with a prostitute, you know?" I asked.
"Are you crazy?" he yelled, leaping to his feet. Pointing at me with a ringed finger, he shouted, "Hailey, how dare you talk to me like that? I've always been there for you, despite you being 28 and—"
I cut him off bluntly, "Still just a medical intern, a failure. Anything else?"
His composure shattered. "What... What did you just say..."
I was drained, longing for rest, but now the bed disgusted me. I regretted coming back; a hotel would have been wiser. I needed time to process and plan my next move, certain I'd manage it, as I always did.
Leaving home, I checked into a hotel and drifted off immediately.
Upon waking, it was the next evening. I sat up, the empty room enveloping me, reminding me of where I was.
Leo's text appeared on my phone, succinctly encapsulating the previous day. [Staying late. Spend Valentine's Day on your own.]
On impulse, I opened his Instagram without switching accounts, finding his latest post—#PerfectValentine'sDay.
The image showed Elisa, her outfit barely containing her figure.
The next moment, Lily's call snapped me out of my thoughts. "I hope I'm not disturbing you on Valentine's Day, my dear. Have you seen the pictures I sent you? Help me choose which one I should wear for clubbing tonight. Wait..." After a short pause, she continued, "Hailey, are you crying?"
"No... Not now, anyway."
"Leo had an argument with you again."
Lily wasn't asking a question. She was simply stating a fact. Lily and I were university classmates. We kept in touch after we graduated. The two of us would talk about everything, and she knew about my situation as well.
I remained silent, not knowing what to say.
Lily didn't ask too many questions on the many. She invited me to go clubbing with her and enjoy being single for Valentine's Day.
"Just ignore that son of a bitch, Leo. I'll come pick you up. Give me an address, and I'll be there."
I didn't inform Lily of Leo's misdeeds. Lily's kindness and passion worried me—she might confront him in a fit of anger, but it wasn't worth it. If it had to happen, it should be me who took action.

After arriving at the club, I realized that it was quite bustling. The lights were shining, and the music was booming. I looked around and saw Lily waving at me at the bar.
"Hailey, over here!" she shouted. "Come over and let's relax."
I walked over, and Lily passed me a drink with a smile on her face. "You must enjoy today. Forget about all those annoying thoughts!"
I forced a smile, too, and took the drink. "Thanks, Lily. I really need to relax."
"Do you know why I wanted to come to this club?" She blinked at me. "That's because they have the best male models in New Ransey! It's the top choice if you want to relax!"
Lily's words cheered me up, and I couldn't help but laugh. Seeing that I was in a better mood, Lily began asking me what had happened.
After some hesitation, I told everything to Lily. Her reaction was fiery—she nearly leaped from her seat in anger.
I embraced her. "You're the one dragging me out for Valentine's Day!"
She exclaimed, "Fuck Valentine's Day! We need to kill that motherfucker!"
The bar's din drowned out Lily’s words. Nearby patrons caught Lily's first sentence and raised their drinks in agreement, "Yeah! Fuck Valentine's Day!"
Lily composed herself. "Hailey, remember, I've got your back no matter what." She held my hand, sincerity and concern in her gaze. "You're a kind girl. I hope you can show that same kindness to yourself."
I nodded and looked at her gratefully. "Thank you, Lily."
"Let's get a few male models to enjoy us for some fun. Don't worry about the cost. I do have enough money for the occasional big spending."
Lily brought the conversation back to the male models. There was nothing I could do and she asked the waiter to bring her some more drinks. "A girl's night out?"
I began to down the drinks with Lily, but soon I regretted my decision. I wasn't good at drinking at all.
When I saw two Lilys, I could still convince myself that I could at least recognize her and that I wasn't that drunk.
I then grabbed Lily's collar and told her to look down at how many drinks we had left.
When Lily closed in on my ear, and her voice became a deep male voice, I finally realized that I was totally drunk.
"Aren't you feeling well, Hailey?"
He actually knew my name as well.
"Did Lily really pay a male model to drink with us?"
The alcohol had numbed my tongue. This caused me to accidentally say the word "murder" instead of the word "model." The model, who I couldn't really see the face of, chuckled in my ear. His lips gently touched my numb earlobes.
I subconsciously reached out to push him away. When my hands touched his shirt, which was half unbuttoned, I realized that his pecs were much more muscular than the patients that I had treated. They were quite soft when he was relaxed. I had those thoughts because of my professional habits.
But then again, no matter how tempting, a robust chest meant nothing but flesh on an operation table. The only thing that mattered was the precision of a scalpel.
"Are you satisfied with my body?"
I was so startled that I nearly fell off my chair. It was a good thing that he had good reflexes and grabbed my waist.
The feeling of losing my balance caused me to desperately want to grab something to prevent myself from falling. However, I accidentally grabbed the man's dick.
I had to admit, this guy had everything needed to be a male model in a club. To be honest, the male models in this club were more like male escorts.
"You're very interesting."
The man helped me back to my table, rested his head on a hand, and smiled at me.
At that moment, a person I shouldn't be thinking of came to my mind. My husband, Leo. All those arguments echoed in my mind.
"No, I'm a dull person. I'm a failure who excels at disappointing others. Even had my phone die when I attempted to catch my husband cheating on me!" I shrieked.
My voice was overwhelmed by the club's loud music. Now that I was a little sober, I was grateful that the music covered my voice. This allowed me to not embarrass myself too much in front of a stranger.
I raised my head and realized that the man was holding my phone. The light from the screen lit up his dark eyes.
"Is this your cheating husband?" His voice was meaningful, and I followed his gaze to see the caller ID on the screen.
"Leo? Why would he call me at this hour?' I wondered.
Before I knew what was happening, the man answered the call and placed the phone beside his ear. I immediately became sober and wanted to take back my phone in a panic. He reached out, put a finger on my lips, and then winked at me.
I read his lips and realized he was saying, "Leave it to me."
The man's actions caused me to be in a panic. I tried to take my phone back, but he placed a finger on my lips, signaling for me to remain quiet."Hello?" His voice was deep and calm when he answered the call"She's not convenient to take the call at the moment. You can just tell me what you want to talk to her about," the man said calmly. He sounded like he was provoking the person on the other end of the line.I quickly pounced towards him and didn't even care if I looked like I was throwing myself into his arms. He was way taller than me, and since I couldn't take my phone back, I tried to cover his mouth and signal him not to say anything else. The soft and wet touch from my palm allowed me to feel that the man was smiling. He wasn't holding back at all. He tilted his head and kissed my hand gentlemanly.I was taken aback by what he was doing. Then, he bent down. I was already in his arms, so we were even closer. If someone looked at us,
I quickly got changed, picked up my bag, and left the house.I was worried sick. No one knew Edward Aesthete, the rich and powerful person who appeared at my wedding, was my only family. A couple of years ago, he was hospitalized due to a heart disease and had undergone countless operations.I had always been worried about his condition. The night breeze caused me to shiver. I quickened my pace and prayed that Grandpa would be fine. After arriving at the hospital, I went straight to Grandpa's ward. Through the window, I could see him lying weakly on the bed. He was connected to a respirator, his eyes were closed, and his face was pale.Ryan, who had always been Grandpa's attending doctor, was the one I relied on for reassurance. But with Ryan away, the emergency was now my responsibility.Entering the ward, I checked on Grandpa and asked the nurse, "How's he doing?""The wound is bleeding, and his blood pressure suddenly dropped. We m
Uncle Tommy's words puzzled me, but I knew I couldn't dwell on them. Grandpa's sudden health issue stemmed from his heart bypass surgery, bringing a host of urgent matters to the forefront.Having previously consulted with Dr. Ryan in detail, the medical team had worked tirelessly to manage Edward's condition. Despite their best efforts, a heart transplant remained the optimal, if not sole, solution.I had no spare time or energy for Leo's disruptions. Alongside my daily responsibilities, I juggled contacting various hospitals and health organizations in search of a matching heart for Grandpa. These tasks weighed heavily on me. Immersed in work during the day and fielding polite yet regretful rejections over the phone during meals, I persisted in urging them to continue the search for a suitable heart for the transplant.Leo's pathetic schemes paled in comparison to the urgency of these matters.Whenever I went to see my grandpa's condition, he always rem
Ethan seemed to have a special talent. Whenever he showed up, one could only see him and nothing else.Elisa finally realized that she should keep her cool. It was probably because the man who had his arm wrapped around my waist was way better than the man by her side who didn't know what to do. This made her feel a little embarrassed. Therefore, she threw the coffee cup in her hand away and turned around to leave.Lily clenched her fists and shouted behind Elisa. "You should fucking apologize to Hailey!" I squeezed Lily's hand. "This is not something that a school teacher should say. Watch your language." Lily looked at me in disbelief.I then added, "Hey, Lily, stay cool! There's a handsome guy watching us."Lily and the man behind me shared a look and erupted into laughter. That was when I felt something shaking behind my back. Ethan was chuckling as well.Ethan released his hold on me and remarked, "I'm here to p
The comment caused a commotion in the hall, prompting surprised and curious glances from those nearby. It was surprising that someone recalled such a small incident from two years back. Leo appeared visibly taken aback, but he skillfully concealed his shock. He quickly regained his composure and replied, "I had no genuine feelings for that medical intern. She was impulsive and always forced me to compromise. You know how some women, who achieve nothing and are blindly in love, can act recklessly... I agreed to marry her out of pity. But now, I've found true love with Elisa. I'm ready to be brave for her!"He then concluded, "That medical intern will soon be my ex."The crowd resumed their murmurs. Leo's act had them fooled, and some began to speak ill of the "impulsive medical intern," casting me as the antagonist.Others whispered about Leo and Elisa, while a few approached them, engaging in lively chats.Despite my hesitation to acknowledge it, L
If I ever thought a heart-to-heart could mend things between Leo and me, those naive hopes were now shattered. As I got to know Leo better, trust dwindled. I viewed him and Elisa as detestable figures that needed to vanish from my world.Elisa witnessed Leo's anger—the fury of a man whose claim had been violated. She couldn't fathom Leo's pretense of being a husband to me, fueling her frustration to the brink.Ethan stepped in, grasping Leo's hand as Leo lunged for me, holding on so tight that I thought I heard a snap. Leo paled in pain, eventually releasing his grip. I regarded Leo coolly; his actions no longer had any sway over me."Indeed, we should talk," I addressed Leo. He smirked, but his expression froze as I continued, "Right here."I continued, "It's simple. You cheated on me, I want a divorce, and you agreed. Anything else?"Leo panicked, seizing my hand hastily. "Divorce? Why? We never...""You just said you'd be brave for once,
"Could we meet later, Duncan? Maybe around 3:30 in the afternoon?" I inquired politely."Sure thing. What's the meeting about?" he asked."He's been cheating on me. I want to file for a divorce." My emotions transitioned from anger to urgency, then to a composed demeanor. "Got it," Duncan responded succinctly. "I'll see you at 3:30."Although I had a lawyer appointment at 3:30, I decided to stop by the bank first. I needed to check our family trust account and close the account Leo had been using. There was a long queue at the bank. The concierge staff scrutinized clients with sharp eyes. My worn-out T-shirt and cheap handbag clearly didn't meet their standards. With time to spare before 3:30, I chose to wait in line. Finally, it was my turn. The teller inquired, "How can I assist you today, ma'am?""I'd like to close my account," I stated.Such requests didn't benefit the bank and dampened the teller's enthusiasm. "Alright," he reluctantly agreed to assist me i
Hailey's POVI'm Hailey, a 28-year-old medical intern. Little do people know, I'm the sole inheritor of the Aesthete family.I lost my parents at a young age. Memories of them were blurry, mostly them calling me their little princess. After their departure, my grandfather Edward became my pillar. His shaky embrace and the thought that I might never see the two people who loved me most in this world lingered with me.Ever since, my main concern had been my grandfather's well-being. A few years ago, his heart issues worsened. Opting to be a cardiac surgeon proved a fortuitous choice, allowing me to stay by his side and tend to him. Each successful recovery post-surgery brought solace. My sole focus was my grandfather's health, as he was my sole kin. Hence, I remained a medical intern; I knew advancing to an attending physician would entail more obligations and less time for him.Yet, life's trials extended beyond the hospital and my grandfather—there was also my marriage.
