Chapter 3 One Alive is Enough

Ten months later, Ruby was lying on the hospital bed and reading some books. Books were the only friends for her during these ten months. She thought that she would be completely cut out from the world if not for the news on TV. But she knew that she still lost contact in some areas. She wasn't allowed to go outside or no one can visit to her too. And she wasn’t allowed to watch TV for a long time but she was allowed to read since the doctors said that it is good for the child's growth.

The ultrasound showed that Ruby was carrying a pair of twins. And they were both boys. That result made the other party so happy and he paid more bonus. And now, her uncle has no debts and his company was raised again and it was saved at the last minute before the bankrupt.

Ruby know that her uncle would be worry for her so, she lied that she went to another country to complete her studies since she didn’t want him to know that she scarified herself for his company and his family. And her aunt also helped in lying with her which made things easier.

Ruby has no please to go during the pregnancy so the man let her live in a mansion and when she was near the labor, he sent her to the best hospital and she could stay in the VIP ward where the cost of the ward is the same profit that her uncle's company could make in a whole year.

Although she was living in a luxury live, she never felt greedy since she knows that every treatment she was getting was for the sake of the babies in her womb. So, she has already prepared to leave everything behind after the child birth. But she couldn't make up her mind to cut all the ties with the babies in her womb. Whenever the kids kicked her womb, she felt like there is someone who is going to accompany her in her remaining life. And she had already founded some feelings for her unborn child.

The door was knocked twice and a doctor with two nurses came in. "Miss James, how are you feeling these days." The doctor smiled gently at her. Whenever Ruby looked at her smile, she felt like she got some motherly love. But she was very certain that it is not her mother. She just wanted to depend on someone when she was feeling a little lonely and sad during her pregnancy.

"I am feeling very well but the kids are naughty and they kicked me when I almost fall asleep." Ruby replied with a smile. But the doctor's face become stiff and she said, "Miss James, I suggest you not to have much feeling on the kids before they were born. It is not good for the children."

Ruby knew that she was lying. She just said a very big lie, the female doctor didn’t let her to form feelings for her unborn children because the female doctor knew that she was a surrogate. But she didn't get mad at the doctor but just thank her for treating the same when she knew that she was just a surrogate.

But while they were checking she felt pain on her belly. "Ah, it hurts." And she tried to sit up and touched her belly. "Please help me doctor, it really hurts." She was both afraid and panicked but she felt a little bit relief when the doctor was just in her ward.

"The patient needs to go into the labor room right now. Ring the bell." The doctor told to the nurses and she prepared to push out Ruby's bed immediately.

Ruby felt the deadly pain while giving birth. And her screams filled in the room.

"It's almost over, just push a little bit more." The doctor courage her and after struggling for almost fifteen hours, she heard the cry.

"Congratulation, the healthy baby boy is born." The doctor announced happily. And the nurse commented, "Oh! What a strong little fellow." They also happy because they were instructed by the Edward Carson, the most powerful man in Australia. And they didn't dare to make a mistake.

Ruby also wanted to hug the little boy but she need to labor another one in her womb. After struggling for another six hours, she gave birth to another son but he didn’t cry.

And Ruby felt like her heart was broken into pieces when the realization hit her that her little boy is dead as soon as he came into the world. And the doctors also panicked.

And the head of the surgeons sighed and said, "We have no choice but to tell Mr. Carson the truth. The mother was the first time mom and it was twins. So, it was very difficult for her and the kid."

One of the nurses got out from the room to report the information to the man who was waiting outside the labor room. When the doctors are going to take away the child, Ruby begged them. "Doctors, can I hug my baby for the last time?"

"The child is dead. And it will be no use. We just suggest you to make up your mind and tried to gain some strengths. You are still young and you don't need to worry since you can get pregnant in the future."

"But, I just want to see him for the last time." Ruby begged persistently. She wanted to hold her son but they didn’t give her a chance with her first son but she can't give up now.

The doctor just sighed and handed her the child. Ruby hugged the child and touch his red cheeks with her fingers gently. A string of tears dropped and she thought, "No, it can't be. He looks like he was just sleeping soundly."

Then miraculously, the child in her arms cry out and all the people in the room was surprised. Ruby excitedly said, "He is not dead. My baby is alive."

The doctors also claimed, "Yes, yes, he is alive. It's a good new, now hurry up and go and report to Mr. Carson." The doctor almost pushed the nurse beside her but Ruby shouted "Wait."

"You can't tell him that he is alive." Ruby hugged tightly the boy in her arms.

"Miss James, I understand your feeling but Mr. Carson won't go easy on us when he found out the truth."

"No, he will only found out the truth when you tell him that his dead son comes back to live. What will he think of you? Are you joking with him over his son's live? Are you an incompetent doctor who can't even decide that the infant is alive or dead? Have you thought about the consequences? What if he wrongly buried his son alive just because you said that he is dead? Do you think that you will have a pleasant future?" Ruby tried to threaten the doctor for the sake of her child.

"So, what should we do with this child?" The doctor asked her back.

"Give it to me. I will take him away and never appear again. I will vanish into the air as soon as I can leave the hospital." Ruby said with her determination eyes.

The doctor was keeping silent and at that time, the nurse who went out just a moment ago to report about that child death, came back and told that, "Doctor, Mr. Carson said that one alive is enough."

Ruby looked at the doctor with the confident eyes but she is the only one who knows herself that her heart was almost throbbing out from her chest. "See, he won't do anything to you all if you just keep it as a secret but even if you hand the second child to him, I will tell him that you all were almost bringing him away because of your wrong conclusion that the child is death."
