Chapter 1
Violet Wells pushed open the heavy wooden door to her grandfather's office. "Grandpa, if you wanted to know about the mother of your grandchildren and your grandson's well-being, you could have just called," Violet said, her voice filled with exasperation. "No need to give me a heart attack." "Violet, my girl, dramatic as always," her grandfather, Christopher, chuckled as he strode toward his chair. "I'm so glad you didn't have an actual heart attack." "Me too," Violet replied, rolling her eyes dramatically, prompting both of them to laugh. "Violet," her grandfather began, his tone growing serious, "the reason I asked you to come to the office is that I’m getting old, and I need a successor." Violet nodded, the sudden shift in mood setting tension in the room. "We both know that will never be your father," he added firmly. "Well, your reasons are justifiable," Violet agreed. "Grandpa, honestly, you’re not that old. You’re still healthy enough to run the company, so you shouldn’t worry yourself about—" "Vio, I’ve planned other things to do," her grandfather interrupted. "I don’t intend on sitting behind a desk until I’m 70." "You want me to take over?" Violet asked, feeling a wave of uncertainty wash over her. "Yes, but on one condition," her grandfather said. "What condition?" Violet inquired, growing curious. "You’ll have to get married and have a child within the space of a year." "What?! Grandpa..." Violet exclaimed, disbelief evident in her voice. "Failure to do so, the successor of the company will be Liam, your stepbrother." The mention of Liam's name sent a rush of anger through Violet. Liam was a manipulator and the product of her father's betrayal. "Grandpa, after everything Liam and his mother have done, there's no way you would give him such a right," Violet protested. "Your father's mistakes and those of his mother have nothing to do with him," her grandfather responded. "He’s still my grandson." "We both know he’ll make my life—and that of my mom and brother—miserable," Violet shot back. "Grandpa, after everything I’ve been through, your condition isn’t fair." "Do you think I would lay down a condition that would bring harm to you, Vio?" her grandfather asked, leaning forward, his voice soft yet firm. "I watched you grow up. I saw the young girl who decided to be an adult and defend her mother and brother. The little girl would stay up until both her mom and brother were asleep. The seven-year-old who cried herself to sleep because she had to grow up too quickly." Violet swallowed hard as her grandfather continued, his words hitting her deeply. "All I want is to eliminate all that pain from you," he said gently. "I believe you're the most suitable person to take after me. I know you won't let me down when it comes to running the company. But I also know that with the responsibility you’ll have to those who love you—and to the company—you will lack time for yourself. All my life, I’ve made money, and I’ve learned that while money can make you happy, nothing feels like having a family. That’s something I want you to have—a family of your own, one that will bring you joy." "Okay, Grandpa," Violet said quietly, feeling a deep sense of unease. "Good, Vio," he said, leaning back in his chair. "You have time. The year has just begun." As Violet left the company, she was unable to interact with any of the employees as she usually did. Her emotions were all over the place. If I don’t find a husband before next year, how will Mom, Wave, and I survive? she thought as she made her way toward the entrance. Knowing Liam and that horrible father of mine, they’ll do everything to ruin our lives. I can’t let that happen. Lost in thought, she suddenly bumped into someone. "Oh my gosh, I’m sorry!" Violet apologized hastily. "I wasn’t paying attention." "It’s okay," the young man said as he wiped off his suit. "Well, I guess this is the universe’s way of telling me to limit my coffee consumption," he added with a smile. "I’m truly sorry," Violet insisted. "Let me get you another one." "No, that’s not necessary, Miss—" "Violet. My name is Violet," she introduced herself. "Please, I’ll feel bad if I don’t. Plus, the coffee shop is just over there," she said, pointing to the building across the street. "Okay, that would be nice," he agreed. As they sat down with their coffee, the man asked, "So, what could make a beautiful girl like you so lost in thought?" "Life, basically," Violet replied with a sigh. "My name’s Alex," the man said. "Okay, Alex, thanks for letting me buy you coffee. I hope I didn’t waste too much of your time." "Oh no, I needed a break. You’re not the only one dealing with life's problems." "Wow, what a relief," Violet said, smiling. "Gosh, if only it were this easy to meet my husband..." "Husband?" Alex asked, his interest piqued. "Uh... I was thinking out loud again," Violet stammered. "No, seriously. You’re looking for a husband?" Alex asked, staring at her as if trying to read her thoughts. "Yes. No. Look, thanks for the coffee, but I’ve got to go," Violet said, standing up abruptly. "I’m sorry if I was prying," Alex apologized. "I just thought... well, this might sound crazy, but if what I’m interpreting is true, we could help each other." "Wait, you’re looking for a wife too?" Violet asked, her curiosity growing. "Yes," Alex replied, his gaze locked on her. Coughing awkwardly, Violet responded, "You know what? I’m going to take my leave. Nice meeting you." "Hold on," Alex called out. "If you change your mind, here’s my business card. We can help each other." Violet took the card and left the coffee shop. "Mom, I’m home," Violet called out as she entered the house, dropping her car keys on the shelf. Suddenly, she heard yelling. "Mom?!" Panic and fear enveloped her as she rushed to the source of the noise. She was stunned to find her older brother, Wave, in the middle of one of his episodes, and her mother on the floor, crying. "Violet, he just started acting out," her mom sobbed. "His episodes are getting worse." "Wave, look at me. Everything will be okay. Come down from the balcony, okay? Please..." Violet begged, her voice trembling. Wave, who couldn’t understand, attempted to jump off. "Wave, please!" Violet cried out, tears streaming down her face. "Big bro, please." She carefully made her way toward him, and just as she reached him, she grabbed him and pulled him away from the balcony, injuring her hand in the process. Instantly, Wave started gasping for air. "Wave!" their mother screamed. "Violet, he’s not breathing. Call for help!" *** "Doctor, how is he?" Violet asked the instant the doctor appeared before them. "He was lucky you brought him to the hospital the time you did." The doctor uttered. "We were able to stabilize him, but his condition is deteriorating. I’ll change his medication, but that’s all I can do for now. I’m so sorry," the doctor said, his voice heavy with regret. "Wave was so cute when the doctor first handed him to me," Violet’s mother sobbed. "But then I realized he wasn’t moving. Maybe if Lucas—his father—had signed the documents right away instead of causing a scene, my baby would’ve been fine. But instead, he abandoned us and called my son names. He hated our innocent child because he was sick. Instead of helping, he left us." "Mom, calm down, okay? I’m here, and nothing will happen to Wave," Violet reassured her mother. "Please don’t cry." As she hugged her mother tightly, Violet pulled out Alex's business card from her pocket. I need to do this, she thought to herself. I can’t let them suffer anymore. She stared at the name on the card: Alex Vanguard.Chapter 2Stepping out of his 2024 Maybach, Alex made his way into the restaurant. Earlier, he had received a call from Violet asking him to meet her there."Good afternoon, someone by the name of Violet reserved a table?" he asked the receptionist."Oh yes, sir," the receptionist replied, beckoning to his assistant to show Alex the table."Glad you considered my offer," Alex said as he sat across from Violet. "Thank you," he added to the assistant receptionist."Glad you could make it on such short notice," Violet said, stretching her hand to shake his."Uhmm, I think before we get down to business, we should order. Don’t you think?" Alex said, trying to ease the atmosphere."Okay," Violet said, picking up the menu, while Alex signaled the waitress. After placing their orders and receiving their meals, Violet decided to address the elephant in the room."You said we could help each other?" Violet asked, adjusting herself in her chair."I did. Last I heard, you need a husband, and I n
Chapter 3"Let's get married today," Violet said on the other end of the line."I thought we agreed on Saturday—three days from now?""Are you getting cold feet?" she teased, giggling. "Look, I don’t want my family to know, so is it possible we could just get married today?""Well… how about tomorrow? I’ll set a meeting for us with my lawyer today to finalize the deal.""Alright, call me when you’re ready."***The next morning, Violet met with Alex and his lawyer."Miss, these are the contract papers," the lawyer said, laying out a stack of documents. "Mr. Vanguard mentioned you haven’t yet agreed on some post-wedding terms. These documents cover possible situations, and you can check off the boxes as you see fit.""For instance," the lawyer continued, "the first question is whether you’d like to go on a honeymoon after the wedding. There’s a box for yes or no."Violet chuckled, whispering to Alex, "Are you serious?"Alex shrugged. "This is how it works, apparently.""Okay, but can w
CHAPTER 4 The dining room was filled with shocked expressions."Violet, what did you just say?" Selena, Violet's mother, asked, still in disbelief."Mom," Violet replied, forcing a smile. "I said, meet my husband." She held up her ring finger to display the ring Alex had just given her before they walked into the dining room. Her grandfather stared blankly, while Lucas and his wife exchanged disbelieving glances. Violet nudged Alex forward as they reached the table, then turned to her grandfather. "Grandpa, meet Alex Vanguard, my husband."Alex extended his hand to greet her grandfather, who accepted it. "Alex…" the elder began."Vanguard," Alex confirmed confidently."And how did you meet my granddaughter?" her grandfather asked."We met about three months ago in a coffee shop," Alex replied politely. "Sir, I know our wedding was rushed and perhaps not properly celebrated, but I wanted it to be quieter and simpler. Please don’t hold any fault against her."“Hmm,” her grandfather rep
Chapter 5Alex got home to find Violet already asleep. He quietly took his dinner and went to bed. The next day, Violet pretended as if everything was normal. She acted cool and casual, and the two of them were getting along well. Time went on, and a month passed. During that month, Alex and Violet grew closer. He took her out on dates and showed her a side of himself he had long buried. Though he wasn’t fully open, it was clear she was the only person he had allowed to come this close.“Alex, I hope you won’t be gone longer than a week,” Violet said, making a cute face that made Alex laugh.“Yes, Violet, I won’t. I’ll close the deal before the week runs out, and soon I’ll be home.”“Promise me,” she replied, holding out her pinky finger. Recently, Violet had noticed she couldn’t help but feel more emotional around him.Observing her emotional changes, Alex chuckled. “I guess we’ve grown on each other,” he thought. As Alex left in his car, she waved him goodbye. Walking into the now-e
Chapter 6An hour later, Selena walked into her house with Wave, who instantly ran inside, jumping around. Weird, she thought, alarmed as she noticed the door was open. She walked further into the house. "Wave, Wave!" she called out. "Wave, please come!" she said cautiously, walking forward. Just as she was about to call for him again, she spotted Violet lying lifeless in a pool of blood."Violet!" she screamed. "Violet, what happened?" She dialed the emergency number unconsciously, her mind scattered, unable to think clearly. The ambulance arrived, and as Violet was lifted inside, Selena joined them, still shaken. While they head to the hospital, she called Penelope to come look after Wave, knowing he was home alone."Hey," Penelope answered."Penelope, please come over and look after Wave. He’s home alone, and there's an emergency with Violet," Selena said, her voice breaking with tears."Ma, I won’t be able to. I'm actually out of the city.""What?" Selena responded, barely hearing
Chapter 7“What!” Selena, visibly angry, stormed out of the room. "So, from what Violet is saying, Grandfather set this all up with his conditions. Why would he make such a condition?" she mumbled angrily."I'll go meet him; he will answer to me!" she declared as she walked out of the building.***“Father! Father!” Selena yelled as she walked into the mansion. "Father!" she called again, making her way through the house until she noticed an open room with a shadow cast across it."Father?" she whispered as she stepped into the room.“Arghhhh! Father!” Selena screamed upon seeing her father's lifeless body, with Alfred kneeling beside him.“Alfred! What the hell did you do to my father?” Selena shouted, tears streaming down her face.Alfred, startled by Selena’s voice, snapped out of his shock. "I d-didn't kill him, Ms. Selena. I…”“Stop! Don’t come any closer,” she half-yelled, sobbing."Then who did?" she demanded, terrified.Alfred, unable to explain, continued inching toward her, b
Chapter 8Violet stood up and unconsciously walked to her brother's favorite place—a small mountain. She didn’t cry; she felt numb. All she could hear were the voices of her neighbor and the news anchor repeating the same devastating words: Wave is dead. The ex-wife of Lucas Wells had been arrested as the primary suspect.Reaching Wave's favorite place, which was close to a cliff, Violet fell to her knees.“Nooo!” she yelled, tears pouring down uncontrollably.“No, please,” she screamed repeatedly, her voice echoing in the emptiness. Her family was everything to her, and now, they were falling apart. She couldn’t believe the nightmare her life had become.Unable to bear the loss, she moved toward the edge of the cliff, despair clouding her mind. She wanted to end it all. Her mother was going to be locked away for the rest of her life, her brother and unborn child were gone, and her husband had ended their marriage. The crushing weight of her losses made death seem like the only escape
Chapter 9"Violet, I’m Sean—your uncle," Sean said, his voice laced with distress."Doctor, what’s happening?" Sean asked, turning his attention to the man beside him.The doctor began to speak, but Violet’s voice interrupted."Sean," she called out, squinting her eyes as if trying to piece something together. "I remember... you were on the cliff with me."Sean nodded. "Yes, I was. I tripped and fell down the cliff."She paused, her face contorting as if she had just remembered something important. "Where is my mom? My brother?" she asked, trying to turn her head to look around."Mrs. Wells, please calm down," the doctor interjected gently."I can’t calm down!" she exclaimed. "Where are they? And why was I on that cliff in the first place?" Her voice was rising with confusion and distress.Sensing that she was becoming too agitated, the doctor instructed a nurse, "Administer a sedative, she’s overexerting herself.""I feel... lightheaded," Violet mumbled as her eyes began to close."I
Chapter 16Tension filled the courtroom as Selena was escorted to the defense table by a female police officer. Her lawyer, Antony Rock, sat beside her, flipping through a file. His expression radiated determination and resilience.Selena took a deep breath, silently praying that everything would work in her favor. She glanced around, noting the presence of Lucas, Josephine, and their legal team, all seated on the prosecution’s side.Due to their joint decision, not to reveal violet return, it had been agreed that neither Violet nor Sean would attend the trial. It was just Selena and Antony defending her case. The court clerk stood and announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, this court will now proceed to hear arguments regarding the introduction of a new witness related to the case.”“Prosecution, the floor is yours,” the judge instructed.“Thank you, Your Honour,” said Lucas’s lawyer, rising to his feet. “The CCTV footage submitted into evidence clearly shows that Miss Selena Brook was th
Chapter 15"Are you sure it's the right time to see her?" Violet asked, feeling uneasy. They were currently at the station, about to see Selena."Violet, trust me. You've fulfilled your promise. It's only a matter of time before Selena is released," Sean said, noticing how tense she was."You're right. Every day, I wish to see my mom, and she's in there," Violet said, tears falling from her eyes.Although she couldn't remember all her memories clearly, Violet had been experiencing flashbacks. Some were painful—like seeing her mom cry—while others were happy moments. The scattered memories only made her miss her mother more."Let’s go in," she said, sucking in a generous amount of air."Let’s go," Sean repeated.Selena, who was still in shock that her case had been reopened, sat on a bench in the visitor's room, her back facing the door."This way," the police warden said, leading them. The moment Violet caught sight of her mom, her world seemed to stand still. Memories of her mother f
Chapter 14 “Mabel!” Lucas called out as he climbed down the stairs, his long legs making it easy for him to catch up to her. “Hey there,” he said, laughing as he finally reached her. “I’m so sorry about Josephine's attitude earlier. Please, let this not come in between the great revenue and deals both our companies are about to make,” Lucas said, carefully choosing his words to ensure the deal wasn’t called off. “Mr. Lucas, we will see,” Mabel replied curtly. “Now, if you may excuse me,” she added, clearly not in the mood for a conversation. Sensing the irritation in her voice, Lucas wasn’t entirely sure about the state of their business relationship. “Mabel, please, let’s go out for dinner tomorrow,” he suggested. “Mr. Lucas—” “It’s Lucas. Call me Lucas,” he interrupted, his voice calm and low. “Lucas, don’t you think that’s inappropriate?” she said, raising an eyebrow. “Not at all. My dinner request is only to ensure we’re still on good terms, both as friends and a
Chapter 13“You’re back late,” Sean said as Violet walked into the mansion.“I was actually on my way to have dinner. You should join me,” he added.“No, I’m sorry, I can’t. I just finished having dinner with someone special,” Violet said, smiling.“Who?” Sean asked, completely taken aback, curious about what could make Violet genuinely happy.“I met with Mr. Anthony Rocks,” Violet hinted.“Isn’t he the lawyer who was responsible for freeing that murder suspect?” Sean asked, his eyebrows raised.“Yes. I decided to formally introduce him to Mom’s case, and he’s interested,” Violet replied.“Well, you did a great job getting that lawyer. He will be so much help to our case—he’s good at what he does.”“I know,” Violet said as she was about to move past him.“I still have good news that can complement this wonderful news you just shared.”“What news?” Violet asked, taken aback.“The investigator I hired to investigate your grandfather’s death five years ago finally reached out to me.”“Wh
Chapter 12“Selena, a gift basket just arrived for you,” one of the prison wardens informed her as she handed over a basket with a small cake and a note attached.Happy birthday, Ma, with love – A.Selena smiled graciously, staring at the gift. She never thought she would spend her 40th birthday behind bars, with no contact from her daughter. Life was so unpredictable. For the past five years, Alex had sent her birthday cards and cakes. Even though he had left the country years ago, he still remembered her birthday, a gesture she would never forget.A little part of her wished she could get a note or even a glimpse of Violet, her daughter. How could she be genuinely happy when she didn’t even know if her daughter was dead or alive? She sighed and mumbled, “Thank you, Alex.”***“What is the cake for?” Riele asked as she walked into the breakfast room, where both Violet and Sean were present. The red cake decorated with a delicate white floral pattern caught her attention. “Take a sea
Chapter 11The next day..."Leo, let’s go," Lucas said to his driver as he stepped into his car. He was in the middle of a very important meeting that was meant to close his day’s work when he got an emergency call from one of the bodyguards he had assigned to trail Liam."Sir, the young master is in a frenzy at the casino. He’s drunk and causing a huge scene," the bodyguard had reportLucas had no choice but to postpone his meeting so he could go stop his foolish son from embarrassing the family and landing himself in the news."Gosh," he muttered, irritation coursing through him as the driver made his way to the casino.Upon arrival, the bodyguard was already at the entrance, waiting to receive Lucas."Sir, this way," the bodyguard said, leading him inside.Inside, Liam was a drunken mess, covered in liquor and yelling at the top of his voice."Do you know who I am? I’m the heir to the fucking Wells empire!" Liam bellowed."Liam!" Lucas roared, immediately capturing his son’s attent
Chapter 10"Thank you," Lucas said as he ended the board meeting. After exchanging pleasantries with the members of the board, he left the company."Sir, where to?" his driver asked as he opened the car door."Let's visit my ex-wife today," Lucas replied with a grin."Okay, sir," the driver said as he started the car.---"Ma'am, you have a visitor," Selena was informed by the warden. She had spent so many days locked away that she had lost count of time. Violet? Could it be Violet? Every day, her prayers were to set eyes on her daughter again. After the news of Wave's death hit her, Violet had been her only source of hope. But, unfortunately, it seemed her daughter had vanished into thin air.She was directed to the visiting ward, where she saw Lucas, dressed sharply in a black suit, seated and staring at her."What do you want, you bastard?" she hissed through clenched teeth, her voice hard. She avoided yelling to keep the police from paying attention. She didn’t want any trouble, a
