“Uhm, big sis. I don't feel so good.” Amelia tried to maintain her balance as she staggered. “Are you sure Derrick is waiting for me in that tent?” She almost fell but was caught just in time by her elder sister, Erica. “Of course I'm sure.” A smile curled at the corner of her lips. “Just behind that curtain is your newly wedded husband waiting to give you a treat.” But the look on Erica's face suggested she was up to no good.
“Ahh!” Amelia cried out as her back hit the mattress, but she couldn't find the strength to get back up. “Enjoy your night, Amelia.” With that, Erica fled the scene. A look of satisfaction on her face. Amelia felt weak. It was as if she had just taken down 12 bottles of Alcohol in one go; her head throbbed like a drum, and she couldn't stand or sit up, like an invisible force had pinned her down. She felt her insides burning, her face red from the intensity she felt inside. All she could do was try to unzip her wedding dress, in an attempt to escape this massive heat that had taken over her body. Then she heard it. Footsteps. Slow, deliberate, and drawing closer. Her heart began to race as the light in the tent seemed to grow dimmer by the second. A shadow loomed just outside, its presence growing larger and more menacing. Amelia's eyes widened. Her lips parted as she struggled to mutter a single word. “D…Derrick?” Whoever it was didn't speak, Amelia tried to look, but alas, her vision was blurred, no doubt from all the alcohol, she thought. The presence drew closer and closer until close enough to reach the zipper of her dress. “Let me help you.” The unfamiliar voice whispered, a man no doubt. Amelia had no idea who it was but she was sure of one thing. It wasn't Derrick! The mysterious man unzipped her dress but he didn't stop there. He made his way to her bra, unclipping her bra straps like they were seatbelts. Slowly, he leaned in, his lips finding hers in a hesitant kiss. The body she thought was immobilized, now responded naturally as her hands gently rested on his chest, feeling his steady heartbeat through her fingers. What was happening, she thought. Where was this rush of energy coming from? His hands move up to her waist, pulling her closer, their bodies now in sync. She could feel the heat from his breath with every kiss he gave on her bare skin. Though she knew something was wrong, her body surrendered and before she knew it, she was led into a night of bliss. ********************* The next morning, Amelia woke up with a terrible headache, her body ached with a strange sense of unease. The memory of last night was still foggy, but something gnawed at the back of her mind. She blinked her eyes open, taking in her surroundings. The tent was silent, the air still. But on the small table beside her bed, something caught her eye. A folded note. “Huh?” Amelia sat up slowly, her heart racing. She reached for the note with trembling hands, unfolding the crisp paper. The handwriting was elegant. “Last night was unforgettable. Here's my card. Call me if you ever run into trouble. -K.F.” Her eyes stretched to the edge of the table, where a business card lay. She picked it up, “Kris Fox?”. She stared at the card in her hand, looking closer. “Wait a minute…” Realization finally hitting her. “I just lost my virginity to a complete stranger!” She tried gathering all her clothes and belongings together, only to be cut midway. “There she is!” Erika's voice rang out, she didn't come alone. “I told you she was here Derrick, and by the look of it, she had some company,” she said with a wicked grin on her face. It was obvious she had something to do with Amelia's predicament. “Derrick…I” Before she could finish, Derrick’s face blazed with rage. His hand struck her across the face, sending her stumbling back. The sting of his slap burned on her cheek, but the pain in her chest was far worse. With a snarl, Derrick ripped off his wedding ring and threw it at her, the small metal band bouncing off her, and landing on the floor. “How could you Amelia!” His eyes beamed with the look of betrayal. “And on our wedding night too. Really? Who does that?” He was hurt. Amelia finally understood now the gravity of what she had done. She had been keeping herself for Derrick all through the five years they were dating. Never once going out of line because of the love she had for him, and yet, just like that, the relationship she had worked so hard for came crashing down before her eyes. “We're done! You're nothing but a whore!” His words cut her like the deepest of knives. She couldn't say she blamed him though, having a one night stand on the day of your wedding didn't exactly scream, faithful wife. But still, he should have at least given her the chance to speak for herself if he had truly loved her as well. Erica's smirk widened as she watched the scene unfold, she was enjoying every second of Amelia’s humiliation. Without another word, she turned and walked away, Derrick following close behind, leaving Amelia shattered and alone in the tent. ******************* With a broken heart still trying to heal, life went back to almost being normal for Amelia. Being a student at Clearfield University doing her master's degree, she had just four months before she would finally be done with the program. And as if the stress of going to campus every day wasn't bad enough, she had to go through the constant reminder that she was a cheating whore every day by Erica. Honestly, the distraction of her studies was the only thing keeping her going. But two months in from then, something changed! Amelia started to get morning sickness, a nauseous feeling that wouldn’t subside. At first, she thought it was the stress of having to attend her lectures late at night. But as the days went on, the symptoms became harder and harder to ignore. She decided to go for a test. And not just any test, a pregnancy test. Her stomach filled with dread at the possibility of her being pregnant. Sitting in the doctor’s office, Amelia’s heart pounded, her eyes scanning the piles of Maternity books lined up on the shelf. When the door finally opened, the doctor walked in, holding a small envelope. He handed her the results without a word. Amelia slowly opened it up, dying with anticipation not knowing what to expect. Her eyes beamed with mixtures of joy and sadness, what was written on that piece of paper would now determine her future. “I can't believe this.” Tears began to flow from her eyes. "I'm..."Mr. Fox entered the living room slowly, Jessica sat gracefully on the cream-colored couch, one leg crossed over the other, flipping through a magazine she wasn’t actually reading.“Ah, Jessica,” Mr. Fox said warmly, his deep voice filling the quiet room. “I apologize for keeping you waiting. You know how business calls can be.”Jessica looked up, offering him a polite smile. “It’s alright, sir. I understand you’re a busy man.”He gestured toward the side table. “Would you like something to drink? Coffee? Wine? Maybe some of the chef’s lemon pie?”Jessica shook her head. “No, thank you. I’m here for business”Mr. Fox chuckled as he settled into the seat across from her. “Still as sharp as ever, I see. That’s what I’ve always liked about you, Jessica. You're smart and determined.”Her expression didn’t change. “Then I’ll get straight to the point. The lunch plan didn’t work. Kris looked… almost disgusted when he saw me.”Mr. Fox smiled faintly, his fingers steepled together. “Disgusted?
Amelia walked into the office, her heels clicking against the floor as she whispered to herself, “Today, I’m focusing on work. Just work.”Her head still throbbed faintly from all that had happened the past few days. She hadn’t slept much, and Kris’s face kept showing up in her mind no matter how hard she tried to push it away.Stella, her friend appeared from behind her desk, clutching a cup of coffee in her hands. “Amelia!” she called out, sliding next to her. “Have you heard the news?”Amelia looked up from her computer screen. “If it’s about the vending machine being ransacked again, I’m not interested.”Stella shook her head dramatically. “No! It's not that. Word has it that the firm has a new ownership.”Amelia chuckled softly, flipping through a few files. “That’s not new, Stella. We get new shareholders every other month. It’s probably another corporate merger rumor. Don’t let it get to your head.”Stella leaned closer. “I’m serious, I doubt these are rumors Amelia.”Before A
The microphone felt heavier in Amelia’s hands. Her palms were sweaty, and the weight of every eye in the room pressed against her chest. Still, she held her ground.“How do you expect people to trust you,” she asked, her voice sharp, “when you keep hiding secrets?”Gasps rippled through the audience. From the parents, the nurses. Kris stood at the front of the room, hands folded neatly in front of him, his expression unreadable. After a pause, he smiled. “That’s a fair question.”He looked straight at Amelia, then turned slightly toward the rest of the room. “But you see,” he began calmly, “some secrets aren’t necessarily about deception. Some are about protection.”His voice carried confidence, every word with purpose. “Take this hospital, for example. There are several medications that save children’s lives. But those same drugs sometimes have side effects. If the hospital released every bit of that information to the public, people would panic. No one would want their children trea
Amelia stirred in bed, groaning as a repetitive sound tore through her sleep. Her hand flew across the nightstand, searching blindly for the alarm clock.“Stupid thing,” she mumbled, pressing every button she could feel. But no matter what she touched, the buzzing didn’t stop. Her eyes cracked open. That wasn’t her alarm. It was her phone. She sat up, squinting at the screen. Kris Fox. And under his name, a flood of messages lit up the screen one after another.Kris: We need to talk.Kris: Stop ignoring me, Amelia.Kris: Three days? Really?Kris: You know I’ll keep texting until you answer.“Good grief,” Amelia whispered, tossing the phone onto the bed like it was on fire.Mel shifted under the blankets beside her, rubbing her eyes. “Don’t tell me it’s him again.”“Who else would it be by this time of the morning?” Amelia sighed. “The man has no shame. It's been three fucking days, Mel. Three days of this.”Mel sat up, her hair sticking out in every direction, and gave Amelia a dramat
The garden fell into a heavy silence as Jessica strolled. Her heels clicked against the ground with such confidence that made Amelia’s skin prickle, this was definitely not her first time here. Everyone looked stunned and shocked—everyone except Mr. Fox. He leaned back in his chair, a smug smile curling on his lips, as if he had been waiting for this moment all along.“Well, this is a pleasant surprise,” Mr. Fox said smoothly. “Jessica my dear, why don't you take a seat. Right there, beside Kris.”“He definitely planned this” thought Amelia. The servants had already placed an extra chair, almost as if it had been prepared in advance—because it was. Jessica slid into it gracefully, her perfume wafting through the air, her smile fixed directly on Kris.“Darling, it's great to see you again,” she said softly, her voice sweet but laced with poison, “I’m back. Studying abroad was wonderful and all, but I realized something was missing… you. U
Amelia stumbled back a little as Kris leaned in, his lips brushing dangerously close to hers. Her heart skipped a beat, but instinct took over, and she wriggled out of his grip."Kris!" she scolded under her breath, stepping away just in time for the door to creak open.Tony the butler stood at the doorway, eyes wide, then quickly covered them with a dramatic gasp. "Oh dear heavens! My apologies, young master, Miss Quinn. Lunch is ready. The family awaits you in the garden."Amelia’s eyes widened. "It’s not what you think!"Tony gave a suspicious cough and turned around, still peeking through his fingers. "Don't worry Miss, I didn't see anything. Nothing at all," he muttered before shutting the door behind him.Amelia spun toward Kris and stomped on his foot. "What was that? I told you no funny business! If this fake relationship is going to work, I need to make a good impression. We need your family’s blessing if we're going to pull this off."Kris, rubbing his foot with a wince, chu
