Sleep evaded Keira as her thoughts were consumed by Friday's events. Things between her and Josh had changed. He did not come to visit as he usually did over weekends and she did not think it would affect her the way it did. She would have to report to him in the morning and she had no idea how he was going to react.
It was just before six when they had finished fitness training. She did her best to blend in and not make any noticeable mistakes to bring attention to her. Josh was fully in control and mentioned where everyone could improve. He did not so much as look at her, she knew he was intentionally ignoring her gaze. After training each got a written manual just to familiarize them about the spaceship. There were a lot of listed safety protocols and how to handle the g-force with lift-off. Luckily by the time that people inhabited Meraki Space travel was a norm, and with added technology, it got easier and quicker so that the normal person on the street could be trained to take a trip into space.
The only information they have ever got from Meraki is that it was simply beautiful, it had the same qualities as Earth but with a quicker growth rate. Sadly, people are divided by wealth.
Josh was visibly agitated and his demeanour was harsh. Beads of sweat had started to form on his forehead, indicating that he was feeling the pressure of the situation. They had three months to prepare for the mission. More trainees came to join almost every day. They all went for initiation to see if they were fit enough to join. This meant that New Hope needed more supplies. After training she decided she would go straight home, Josh also needed to clear his head. As she turned to go home, she could see a couple of ladies waiting for Josh. She rolled her eyes at how easy it came for him to just move on to the next. Was she angry? She was fuming, and to top it off she could see Dorothy walking towards the camp from afar.
“If looks could kill.” Sasha wiped her forehead under her cap. Her red hair was sticking to her face.
“I just don’t understand men.”
“Men are not all like that creature, no he is if I have to give an example; his brain got stuck in reproduction. It might come in handy in the future if there were like ten humans left.”
“You just have no filter, do you?”
“I am not blind; he is all about the chase. These cult-like followers he has is boring him to death so it would be obvious that he is looking elsewhere for excitement. Do not become part of the cult group, I saw what happened on Friday.”
“You saw that?” She was grabbing at words. “To my defence it was mutual.”
Dorothy bit her lip. “Just what are you talking about? Did something happen between you and Josh?”
“That is not what you talked about” She instantly regretted where this conversation was headed. “We kissed.”
“And you, you initiated it?” She waved her arms in the air. “Did the sun toast your brain cells? You can look at him, but you do not touch the merchandise. If he knows that he has any effect on you, he has already won.”
“It was a kiss, Sasha. A good one.”
“You need guidance, if not that man is going to eat you up and spit you out.” Sasha gently touched her shoulder. “I am not trying to be harsh but even if he does care for you deeply he is already set in his ways.”
Why did she have to complicate it with a kiss? She caught a glance of Josh looking her way and for a fleeting moment, she knew she was blushing.
“Come, I have the right remedy.” Sasha grabbed her hand.
People usually stood around conversing after training had finished. She knew exactly what Sasha was doing and she could feel herself resisting.
“We are just going to show him that the playfield is open. He is doing the same to you. Tell me that this performance that he is putting up is not to catch your eye. Beat him at his own game, make him jealous.”
She reluctantly gave in as Sasha dragged her to where a group of new and some of the older recruits were chatting loudly. She reckons it had something to do with the cult of girls still flocking around Josh. She smiled as she saw Dorothy pacing close by waiting to strike. As they came closer the men’s demeanour changed. They were suddenly whispering and she saw them standing a bit straighter, and it was all smiles. She was willingly walking into a lion’s den.
“Good afternoon lads.” Sasha was smiling.”
Inwardly she cursed Sasha, she was already married and Buck would have a field day if any of them misbehaved. Buck was a farmer and strong as a bull.
“My, my if it is not the two most beautiful ladies in town.” One man exclaimed.
“Careful there, I am a married woman.” Sasha gave him an intimidating stare.
“My apologies.”
One of the recruits smiled. “I have just heard of the beautiful Miss Summons. We all know who you are, deadly in appearance and with a knife. No means of disrespect.”
“Non-taken.” Her eyes caught a glimpse of Josh, she could tell he did not like this at all. She knew him all too well, he was a master of hiding his emotions, and that even a twitch would give him away. “What made you join the Eagle tribe?”
The recruit continued; “The raiders are relentless these days, some of us barely escaped with our lives.” She only then noticed his sunken eyes, and he was malnourished. This was why she was here, not to get the attention of a man who probably was stringing her along. She was here to make a difference.
Her thoughts were interrupted by Josh’s deep voice, which she dreaded. “I am glad all of you are getting to know each other, as these are the people you will rely on in battle.”
Sasha folded her arms. “You just could not help yourself.”
As per usual it had no impact on him. “I think we should have a meet and greet next week so we can all get acquainted.”
Sasha whispered in her ear. “Of course he does.”
She could see that his presence made some people uncomfortable and almost immediately some recruits started making excuses to leave.
Just as she was about to leave Josh started talking. “Not you Miss Summons.”
“Not that I want to leave her here with you, but Buck is already waiting.” She whispered. “Sorry K.”
With that Sasha turned around and walked away, merely moments after the group split up and also left. They knew when they were not wanted.
“I am not impressed with whatever you are planning now, it does not suit you, Keira.” His eyes fell on her face and trailed down to her lips.
She could feel her heartbeat accelerate Which may also be that she wanted to strangle his big strong neck. “And what you are doing is just dandy right?” She stepped closer and she knew he was at no cost intimidated by her, but it made her feel a little bit more in control. “Get a grip on yourself because your desperation is showing. Just because I did not fall for your poor attempt to turn me into one of your cult members does not mean that you own me.” There was a fire in her that she did not know existed.
“This is just an example that you spend way too much time with Sasha. Rich coming from you who rejected me and now toy with me after I have confessed. What are you trying to do to me?”
“You did not give me time to access or process how I felt, and when you could make up for it you did not show up. Around every corner, some woman is thinking of a way to just accidentally fall in your arms. You are entertaining their feelings that is why I doubt you!” She was almost screaming. “This is only the aftermath of your selfish actions. You do not know how to court a woman because you have never put in any effort. You say you like me, fell in love with me then show me!”
“Let me take some time to process this first.” Josh took a step back.
“Josh Dagon you must be kidding me! If you walk away from me today, I will not forgive you for it.” She walked towards him as he stumbled backwards. “You are a fool.”
She rolled her eyes as she saw Dorothy take full charge of the situation. She did not have time for this anymore, she was not going to jump in the ring with ten other girls. For someone who always knew how to lure girls in with his smooth talking, he did not have a lot to say. Josh Dagon you are banned from my thoughts and heart she thought. She turned around and walked off.
That night she had trouble falling asleep, she never had any problem like that as she had always thought that everything could be controlled. She knew how to switch off at any time she needed to and believed with the right amount of discipline you could achieve much more than what you put your sights on. She slowly breathed in, reminded herself that she would achieve nothing being sleep deprived the next day and closed her eyes.
"Keira wake up." Don was crouched next to her bed. He handed her her knife. "We have been breached."
She immediately jumped up and pulled on a pair of pants and boots. "Where have they last been spotted?
"I think they are looking for supplies and the ship, news might have reached them that the ship is at the final stages of rebuilding."
They walked out of the door. "Look after Hellen, you have done enough."
He disappeared in the direction of Hellen's house. Her father was not as strong as he used to be, although he is a great asset to train recruits he was not as agile as he used to be. She headed to the storage facility, it was still dark out. Her sight was limited to mere metres in front of her so she made use of her other senses, but she knew every inch of the area which gave her a great advantage.
As she closed in she could hear people engaging in battle. Rather late than never she thought. She waited for the right time to slip through the door, once in she hid behind one of the storage units, a dim light was on and she could make out a couple of figures. As her eyes became accustomed to the dark it was easier to see what figure belonged to whom. She could make out Josh's figure, he was in the middle of two guys attacking him from opposite sides. She crawled closer careful not to give away her position. She was now a metre from them, slowly she got her leg in position and kicked the one man blunt on the kneecap.
With the impact Josh spun around, she saw the knife glistening in the night and knew she was too late. She had no time to spare, with the other guy on the ground she knocked him out with the back of her boot. As Josh fell to the ground, she jumped up. Her aim had to be perfect, and as the intruder's gaze shifted from Josh to her. In one full swing, she pushed her palm up, her aim was perfect and as her hand connected with the tip of his nose, she could feel the bone crush under the force.
Some of the men were already regrouping to help catch the last of the culprits.
"Come help me get him to the doctor!" She shouted to one of the rookies.
She pulled him up over one of her shoulders and another grabbed his other and picked him up. The doctor was already on his way. As soon as they got to the medical centre he was waiting for them. A couple of nurses took over and helped get him inside.
She stood there for a moment before going back to see if there was anything else she could help with, the raiders were caught and now the long process of interrogation lay ahead.
"Do you think he will make it?"Keira was busy eating a piece of toast."Josh has a strong will, and Doctor Atkins knows what he is doing. Don't worry he will make it, for now, lets focus on the current developments.' Don touched her shoulder."Who is going to handle the interrogations?" She knew the answer to the question, but she asked anyway. Don could not help himself, he was born for this it was in his blood. He did not handle retirement with grace."Major is going to stand in for Josh and I believe that at this stage I will help out." He combed his hands through his hair. "We are short-handed at this stage, and as you know new rookies keep on streaming in. I think that is the reason for the attack last night, we are getting too much exposure at this stage. People talk, that is the problem. By now most tribes know our plans everyone wants a part of it. Whether you want safety or to gain riches people talk.""So are you going in alone?""I can talk to Major and ask if you c
There was a sense of exhilaration brewing inside of her. She did not know if it was due to the liftoff day drawing closer or that she was about to do her first interrogation. Some raiders were merciless they had no value for life. She always wondered what drove people to do certain acts. Can one human be that cruel, or did life make them numb to violence and hurt? She had to remember that the suspects were probably the same and she should handle them accordingly. Don was quiet but she understood, she knew he had to do things in his past that he was not proud of. It's funny how you are seen as a hero when you do unspeakable things. She saw it behind the curtains of his eyes, she read it in the way he drifted off sometimes or small things like how he looked at his hands. She knew that Don did not want this for her but if she did pursue it she needed to be prepared in any situation. It was for her protection. "Are you ready?" Don broke the silence. "It is still early so it gives us en
Every muscle she had inside her body was on fire. It was worth it she thought as she looked at the group. A couple of days had passed since she last saw Josh and she welcomed the break. There was no space for distractions, the thought of him made her shudder. Their last encounter had awakened a lot of mixed feelings within her. Major had separated the weak from the strong. They were divided into different categories, she was now part of the elite, like a group of titans who would strike fear in the minds of anyone they would encounter. They were as one, moving swiftly through every course taking into account any new danger that could lurk behind dark corners. Long nights of planning brought in different outcomes to take into account. She was motivated and had one goal; save her people and take control over Meraki. She grabbed her water bottle and splurt the remainder over her head. The group had dismantled, there was no more friendly bickering the air seemed different. It
Josh did not take rejection lightly. "Sutton!" He shouted. "How many times do I have to repeat this? Aim for the nose, not the eye. You want to inflict pain not give the guy a black eye!""There is no problem with my aim." She said a bit too loud. More like the instructor she thought. "Excuse me? What did you say? Get down and give me twenty, and that counts for everyone who questions my authority.""Who rattled his cage?" Sasha whispered from above. "Don't ask." Josh knew everyone's strengths and focused on improving techniques. For someone his age he was well-rounded, it was like he had an extra sense. The night he got injured was the first time she had seen him harmed reminding her that teamwork was a must. No matter how good you were even if you were the best at something we all need help sometimes. Days went by, there were only a select few who knew that construction of the ship continued at night. It was now ninety percent complete which meant the day drew near
Keira stayed with Sasha till the morning sun's rays greeted them. Sasha would have sudden bursts of tears and then moments of total silence. Some say that depression to them is complete isolation a feeling of extreme loneliness and disconnection from the world or people. Sasha did not need to speak about it, her eyes told her about the total lack of sleep that she endured. She wondered if Sasha would heal with time, or if the memory of Buck would make her want to escape reality. Sasha was like an empty shell, what once filled her with life was the presence of Buck. Sasha's life consisted of routine and habits nothing was done without Buck, he was her only family. Keira sat for long staring at Sasha, she had a meeting with grief. She never knew the weight of sorrow as now. As Sasha moved through the house Keira felt its presence and she could not help to be affected by it. How do you move on from this? Do you use words, try to erase all memories of him, or make Sasha go back to traini
"Exhaustion." Doctor Atkins stood next to Sasha's bed. His eyes seemed tired under the black-rimmed glasses. "Then what about the pills that I have found?" Keira looked at her friend, her face seemed sunken. Her lively red curls seemed oily and unattended. Her freckles were prominent on her white skin. "I assume she didn't get to that. She is also dehydrated." Doctor Atkins was busy writing something on a piece of paper. "I would keep her here for a couple of days for observation. As far as I know, she does not have family, is there anyone she could stay with?" "She can stay with me. Doctor your honest opinion, how long will she be like this?" "Keira the thing is, as you know I am a doctor. I deal with bodily injuries and sickness, physical, and mental I can give you a prescription, but it won't fix the problem." She walked over to touch Sasha's hand. Her hand was cold, she put them between hers and started warming them up. "It depends on her will to live." Doctor At
Keira was awake and could not sleep any further, it was just after four. She stood up to make herself a cup of tea and was surprised to see Sasha sitting at the table with a cup in her hand. "You are up early," Keira noted as she let the herbal tea soak. "You let me sleep the whole day yesterday remember? Your dad makes some pretty good tea. "I am sorry but you look better this morning, are you up for today?" Keira studied Sasha's face, she seemed better. The color was returning, it is amazing what a good meal and sleep could do. Sasha took another sip. "I am going to do it for Buck, I am going to fuel all my energy towards this. This is the one thing that Buck always supported me with." Keira loved Sasha's determination. She was still worried that the pressure of the situation might get too much for her. Keira heard Don's voice behind them. "You girls want breakfast? Hellen traded some items for chicken eggs yesterday." He sighed loudly. "What I would not give for a n
Sasha's piercing scream echoed through the house, and Keira's heart sank. For a moment she looked at the ceiling and then at the clock against the wall. It was past three in the morning. Keira had decided to move into the storage room that Don turned into a small bedroom. Sasha had none of it, but she also knew that it was pointless to go against Keira so reluctantly gave in at the end. She gently slid her foot out from under the thick blanket and onto the cold, wooden floor. As she stood up, the old floorboards beneath her feet creaked and groaned, protesting the disturbance. On the way out she grabbed her pink robe before exiting. She made her way down the dimly lit hallway and could feel the icy air nipping at her skin. She stood in the doorway of her bedroom door, she could just make out Sasha's figure. Sasha had relived Buck's last moments every night after his death. Keira walked over to the bed to where Sasha lay. She was already awake, Keira could not make out her
Keira woke up entangled in her hair. It was still dark out, she gasped as her fingers traveled over a body next to her. She cringed; Caleb will have a field day about this. She was certain she had put up her pillow tower the night before. She tried remembering the previous night; she remembered how Caleb had to take her home after the dinner and introduction to society. She had three glasses of champagne and it had hit her hard. She had never had champagne before, it was something that everyone knew of but nobody had laid their eyes on. She quickly removed her hand from Caleb’s bare chest. She was extra careful not to wake him up.“Don’t tell me you have never had champagne before.” She jumped when she heard his voice in the darkness. “I have not.” “I know, you had told me a couple of times last night.” He halted and moved around in the covers. “I must say, I rather like you when you are not stiff as a plank.” He was having fun with her and she hated it. Bits and pieces
There was a sense of excitement ruling the house. It was the day of her Welcoming party, dresses had been delivered early in the morning. Caleb had his fair share of suits, he told her that he would decide on a colour that matched the colour she was wearing. She had a hair and makeup appointment at three, that gave them enough time to be ready in time. She decided on a powder blue and white ombre dress with a mermaid tail. From the white one-shoulder top it gradually turned blue towards the bottom. The bottom part was decorated with teardrop crystals, and the top shoulder had a long sleeve trailing to the bottom. The top was decorated with the most beautiful silver needlework. As accessories, she had a thin crystal band, that was her headpiece. She did not want it to overshadow the dress.Caleb had left for the afternoon, giving her the freedom to get dressed. She walked over to let the hairdresser and makeup artist in. The ladies greeted cordially and as usual, did not make
You could hear a needle drop in the dining hall, it felt like everyone stopped breathing momentarily.Keira looked up to face her grandfather, she showed no fear. This room feared him. “Good evening grandfather.” She greeted sternly.“Join me in my study after dinner.”He did not smile, he did not welcome her. He just continued with his dinner, her eye caught Cassandra eating quietly next to him. Her grandmother seemed frail next to Zavier. Although he was old, he was intimidating. After what seemed like an eternity they had finished dinner in silence. “Follow me.” Her grandfather instructed her when dinner had finished. She quietly walked behind him through the dining hall, his office was situated in the West wing. The big door opened to a study, and a couple of books decorated the shelves. She supposed that they were not needed on Meraki. They were ornaments of a forgotten time, a time on Earth. She went to sit on the only chair available in front of the big steel desk. T
“You will be fine.” Caleb turned his back as he put on a white long-sleeve shirt.Keira caught a glimpse of his bare back; she was getting used to him. An old married couple, she thought. They surely bicker like an old couple.“My grandfather does not seem like a people person.” She responded worriedly.“He is not from what I remember, as I recall Cassandra has always been the attentive one between the two. I don’t think your grandmother ever recovered from losing your mother, she had always seemed like she was alone. You still need to meet your cousins, I wonder how they turned out.” He shrugged and took out a pair of pants from the drawer.“They are probably a breeze, I don’t think they will adapt to me coming into the picture.” Luckily for Keira, she will only meet them with her welcoming party. “Cassandra did say that she will speak to my grandfather regarding our engagement. I am sure she already did as you are coming to dinner.”“The West family dinners, I was part of that
“You have to be kidding me!” Keira said aloud.“Just go with it, your grandmother is already suspicious.” Caleb urged her.Caleb has been in her face ever since they had come to Ouro. Not that she could be any more uncomfortable.“There is no time,” Caleb said hastily. With a swift move, he had spun her around and pressed against the wall. This was an act she kept reminding herself of as his mouth pressed against hers. It was not a real kiss but it still left her frozen in position. “Giggle or do something.” He whispered under his breath. She let out a high-pitched giggle, her stomach churned. This was not good, she felt her whole existence crumble as she evaded his eyes. She knew what she would see, I do not approve of Miss Summons. She heard movement and looked up. She quickly pushed Caleb away as soon as she noticed Cassandra standing behind them. “Sorry.” She stated that she was genuinely humiliated.Caleb followed her lead and turned around, as if he felt her discomfort h
“I will take the bed thank you,” Keira said already making a run for it.“You know this is a super king-sized bed, a whole family can camp out here and invite their pets,” Caleb answered unbothered by her actions.“I do not know what type of sleeper you are, you might think you are catching culprits and wander off to my side of the bed.” Keira eyed the luxurious silk nightgown spread on the bed. Her fingers glided over the soft fabric.“Miss Summons I most definitely do not wander in my sleep. Also don’t worry, you are not my type if you were wondering.” Caleb said grabbing the men’s pyjamas from the bed and continuing to walk to the bathroom. They had just returned from the dining hall, and Keira had eaten things that she had never heard of before. They cross-pollinate a lot of fruit trees to get a lot of different varieties. Meraki also has a vast amount of fruits that only grow here. Her grandfather was in meetings and she had heard from Cassandra that he had to inform the cou
Keira held onto Caleb’s hand to the West Mansion. Ouro was divided into four sections, the working force was staying on the outline closest to the walls. A wall separated the working class from the upper-class families. These families were also employees of the Chosen, others had businesses and had shares in surrounding mines and farms. When moving more inward towards the middle of the city the terrain changed. There was a man-made mountain range that overlooked the city. The second level housed the founding families and the highest peak was allocated to the West family. Cable cars were the way of public transport all around. Farms and Mines were based outside of Ouro, everything worked on solar energy. Guards were stationed all around, everything seemed peaceful. The West family had a firm grip on the whole of Ouro, everything was laid out perfectly for them to have control over the people and all that happened around Ouro.Keira looked over at Caleb. He had been quiet the
Like a Giant, the City came into full view. It was unlike anything Keira had ever seen before. The walls had a mirror-like shine but were black in color. There were small observation posts around the wall that hosted guards to defend the city. Closer to the gates it became more busy. She was not used to this amount of traffic. Hoovers were all over, small, big, carriers then there was the odd contraption here and there. She was expecting way less than the picture in front of her.“Be calm, I can see you are overwhelmed. They are going to test you at the gate, I am going to ask that you go first. Hopefully, when they get your results they won’t be bothered with me.” Caleb looked out in front of him and she knew for him coming back here would be torture. The road towards the entrance had huge rows of trees and gardens, this reminded her of pictures she had seen of castles it was flamboyant like you were entering a different dimension. This was for the rich and they spared no ex
Keira had to say goodbye to Sasha once again. She had decided in the end that taking any more time would risk exposure. She did not want to put anyone else’s life in danger. “Are you ready for this?” Sasha asked Keira trying to hide the tears in her eyes. They were sitting next to each other in the living room. It started raining and it felt to Keira like the rain was a reflection of how she felt inside. Even though the clouds could express themselves, she had to keep her tears cropped up. Keira had to be strong. “Why are you crying? You know I will be back, I won’t be killed that easily.” Keira smiled at Sasha gently pressing her hand.“I know, it might just be pregnancy brain.” She smiled. “I also know that everything has led to this point, it is just sad that you are doing this with Caleb. Although I trust him now, you would never know what he is truly capable of. What do we know about Caleb, other than what we have heard?” She rubbed her finger over her lips. “I think i
