It was a cold dark stormy night at the cabin. The kind that makes you want to snuggle up in front of the fire with your lover talking about your future together. Unfortunately, that was not the case for Iris, not this time. She wrapped herself in the biggest, coziest blanket she could find hoping to feel better about being alone tonight. Being alone made her think about all the memories. Memories of someone she had long forgotten. Memories of a person with no face. She cast a spell on the fire making it dance to keep her distracted. Her familiar Midnight noticed her and came prancing over to her. “At least I have you ” she said as her cat purred into her touch. “You wanna go for a walk girl?” She stood up walking towards the door to grab her fluffiest coat. Midnight meowed walking behind her. Iris put on her coat and then put a coat on Midnight before heading outside to the path in front of her cabin.

Not many people walked at three in the morning, especially during a storm. Tonight was rather lively which was odd for her neck of the woods. None of her neighbors lived close by, Iris liked it that way. Lots of privacy. As Iris went about her walk she noticed a strange man walking on the path in her direction. He seemed odd and yet strangely familiar. She didn’t wanna take any chances regardless, can never be too careful right? “Midnight! Come here girl!” She yelled for her cat to come to her. Midnight darted off, completely ignoring her request.

Iris stood there frozen in place as he walked past her. She had the urge to say something which was strange for her. Almost as if she was meant to say something. The rain and thunder picked up at an alarming rate. She headed back towards her cabin hoping Midnight was back inside already. As Iris approached her cabin she noticed that same man from earlier standing under a canopy trying to keep dry. “God damn it” she muttered.

She may hate most strangers but she couldn’t leave him there. She’s not a monster. “Are you lost? The weathers getting bad, you need to head indoors” she asked as she stepped towards him holding out the umbrella she kept on her porch. He cautiously took the umbrella and opened it. “No, I'm not lost. What do you take me for? An idiot?” He says but you can definitely tell he’s lost. “I’m not gonna answer that. Do you wanna… come in? At least to just call someone?” She opens her door and is now standing in the archway slowly waving him to come in. He walks inside slowly, staying on guard.

“Now don’t get any bright ideas bucko, I am a witch” She states calmly. “Wouldn’t dream of it, I know who you are. The only witch in the world who’s all alone… My Dear Iris” he pats her on the head smirking as he walks into her kitchen. She begins to regret letting him in, after all she has no idea if he’s even a human. “Since you know all about me” she rolls her eyes and crosses her arms “Who and what are you?” Midnight rubs across his leg, he jumps not expecting the cat to touch him. “Quinn” is the only answer he gives her. He uses the landline to call a friend but there’s no answer. He never called anyone.

She can tell no one picked up but she couldn’t leave this lone stranger out in the storm. “Okay Quinn, You can go stay in the guest house since your friend didn’t pick up. If you’re still here in the morning, come knock on the door and I’ll let you in. There’s not much out there” She walks to her supply closet digging out a backpack full of water bottles, clothes and a few snacks “here” she says. He nods and walks out the door towards the guest house.

He got into the house last night to ask her something and noticed the bathroom door open. He saw her under the water and his breath stopped for a split second. “No. Not like this honey girl.” He walks and scoops her up. He dries her off and puts her favorite robe on her, gently laying her in bed. Midnight came and curled up next to her falling asleep. He sighed before walking out her bedroom and leaving the house, forgetting all about what he was gonna ask her. He made his way back to the guest house once he arrived there he plopped down on the bed pretty hard. “Did she just try to kill herself? Or was she trying to remember something?” He ponders at that thought until he dozes fast asleep. He woke up at around two in the afternoon. He wondered if he should just drop the bag at the door and leave, or actually knock. His heart skipped a beat just thinking about her almost drowning. Maybe I should at least just check on her. I'm sure she’s fine, she's a grown woman, he thinks.
