Suddenly, I found myself alone in that room with more questions than answers. I let a tear run down my eye and soon found myself desperate to get away.
How could I be married to a man I didn’t know? I would never accept such a situation in my life. I decided that I couldn’t allow the consummation to happen; after all, I was unable to bear any man touching me again.
I wiped my face and, when I stood up, I realized I was wearing new, clean clothes. The mirror’s reflection startled me. My nose was red and all the swelling was even in one of my eyes. I barely remembered what had happened, but Mason had hit me so hard that I had fainted.
Carefully, I walked to the door, hoping it wasn’t locked. The night breeze caressed my face as I opened it. I quietly left the room, slipping down the wide, dimly lit corridor. I had no idea where I was going; the place was simply enormous.
I spotted a giant staircase, and my light steps took me there, making sure that no one would see me slip away. My restless mind was searching for solutions. What would I do once I got out of that house? Where would I go? How would I survive in that cruel world, completely alone? I had no family, no one I could go back to. My mother was dead. But I knew that wasn’t the fate I wanted for myself.
I was determined to escape from a husband I didn’t know and avoid a fate that awaited me, one that could be worse than living next door to Mason.
I descended the last step and was ready to escape.
“Are you going somewhere?” Gregory’s voice suddenly came out, making me freeze in time as a shiver ran down my spine.
I turned to look at him and saw him standing in the middle of the large room, his arms wrapped around his body and his gaze sharp, as if he had been waiting for this moment.
“You took longer than I expected to try to escape,” I sensed sarcasm in his voice.
“How did you know I would escape?”
“Mason warned me,” he shrugged. He was right when he said you were weak and cowardly.”
My fingers tightened on the sweater I was wearing as I stared at Gregory’s cold, indifferent face that filled my mind. I hardly knew the man, but I hated him with all my might.
“What kind of man are you, capable of buying a woman to make your wife?” Feeling as if lightning had struck me, I boldly asked him, “Do you think I’m a commodity?”
“Is that what fucking Mason said to you? That you’re a commodity?”
His gaze remained cold and full of loathing, only this time a discreet smile appeared on his lips. Which, in a way stunned me.
“Mason owed my company a lot of money. He needed to pay it back.” I stared at him in surprise. ”I needed a young, beautiful wife. This was more than a sale, but an exchange of favors.”
Gregory’s icy words echoed in my mind.
“Then it’s worse than I imagined,” as he finished speaking, I raised my eyes and watched him approach. “Know that I don’t accept these conditions and that I won’t stay married to you.”
Gregory grabbed my wrists so hard that I groaned in pain. He pulled me closer and squeezed my bruised and sore face with his other hand.
“I’m not negotiating with you, Emma. I’m informing you. If you don’t agree, I can guarantee you won’t see the light of day again.”
I knew at that moment that Gregory wasn’t joking, when he pushed me, making me lose my balance and fall to my knees on the cold, dark floor of the house.
“You’re not here to question my motives,” he continued with his vile and merciless speech, “you’re here to be my wife and do whatever I tell you. You should be a little grateful and realize that you’re now free of your cruel stepfather.”
I couldn’t lift my face to look at him. His words would hurt me far more than any bruise left on my fragile body. Gregory seemed to know a lot about me, while I had no idea who he was. The only certainty I had was that I had left one prison and entered another; once, that was enough for my broken heart.
For the third time, Gregory’s voice echoed through the enormous house, this time ordering Samantha to take me back to my room. She helped me to my feet as I felt my legs trembling. I took a deep breath, hiding all my frustration, and swallowed my tears. I wouldn’t give that man the pleasure of seeing me suffer.
When I finally raised my face to look at him, he was no longer there. Samantha dragged me into the bedroom because I didn’t have the strength to move. I felt comfortable crying in front of her and she, after finally putting me to bed, began to console me.
“Don’t despair, miss,” she put the blanket over me,” Mr. Gregory will be a good husband. As long as you’re in this house, you’ll be safe.”
I stood up suddenly, as if I’d just had a great idea. With my eyes wide open, I grabbed Samantha’s hand before she could get away and questioned her.
“You work for him,” Samantha said, startled and trying to escape, but I didn’t let her get away. “Tell me who he is and why he chose me as his wife.”
She stood petrified in front of me, as if she didn’t know what to say, but I wouldn’t let her get away before she answered all my questions.
“I don't understand why he chose you as his wife,” her voice came out shaky and slurred, “but Mr. Gregory is the heir to a multi-billion dollar empire. He needs a wife to take over the family business.”
“Billionaire?” I whispered, and it was as if my strength went out like a balloon. ”I married a billionaire?”
“You’ll know everything soon enough,” Samantha smiled as if to reassure me,” you need to heal those wounds. Gregory’s grandparents will be here to meet you.”
Another shudder ran through my body. Things were worse than I had imagined.
The days dragged on as I spent most of my time locked in the bedroom. The only familiar face I saw was Samantha’s, who occasionally appeared during the day to bring me food. Other times, a younger maid would come to her place, but she said nothing and wouldn’t even look me in the eye. She would enter, leave the food on the table, and leave immediately. The bruises on my face were almost healed, which made me quite apprehensive. I knew that as soon as I got better, Gregory would walk through that door and demand that I fulfill my role as his wife.I still found his behavior of not seeking me out very strange. Since that night, when he caught me trying to escape, I hadn’t seen him again. Some nights, I heard his voice and his footsteps descending the stairs. Then, I’d go to the window and see him get into a car and leave, rushing. Occasionally, Gregory returned at dawn or only the next day. That man’s life was a mystery to me. However, I had nothing to complain about; he stayed away, as
Immediately after saying that, the old man turned his back and left. Gregory tried to catch up to him, attempting to convince him to stay for lunch, but the old man only glanced at me with disdain and said Gregory needed to produce a grandson as quickly as possible if he truly wanted the inheritance.I covered my face with my hands and immediately regretted trying to help him. Why had I wanted to be kind to a man who had bought me like a cheap commodity? That was my greatest flaw—helping those who didn’t deserve it.I was so consumed by my worries that I didn’t notice when Gregory approached. I only felt him grab my arm and drag me upstairs. An indescribable fear gripped my chest.I muttered the entire way, questioning what he intended and where he was taking me, but all I could hear was Gregory’s labored breathing, as if he were holding his anger between his teeth. Then he opened the door to my room and threw me onto the bed. My heart sank, and I feared the worst. After all, the idea
I could see Gregory’s indifferent face as he told me I needed to give him a child. A smile played on my lips—why was I laughing? Out of desperation because of all the things Gregory had said to me in the short time we had been married, those words were the worst. There was a brief and heavy silence between us. I felt a knot tightening in my throat as I considered the possibility of having a child with that man. I couldn’t bear for any man to touch me again. The images of Mason on top of me, forcing himself on me while I begged him to stop, came flooding back, nearly pushing me into a panic attack.“Find another way to get your inheritance because I won’t have a child with you.”My defiant words forced me to display determination, even as his sharp gaze bore into me and fear of what Gregory might do next gripped me.“I’m not giving you an option, Emma; I’m telling you.” Gregory’s response was short and cold, and I felt there was nothing I could say to change his mind.“Are you going to
I pace back and forth in the doctor’s office while I wait for the results of my pregnancy test. After that night, when I was with Gregory for the first time, my heart warmed at the thought of being truly desired and realizing that Gregory’s sharp words were just excuses to hurt me.However, our encounters became rare and decreased as the years went by, and I could not get pregnant. Gregory’s hatred for me grew considerably, but for me, it was already too late. I had fallen in love with my cruel husband.Gregory’s stance on all this was clear: When you give me a child and the inheritance is transferred to me, we’ll get divorced. There were six months left until our agreement ended. I hoped that, by then, I would finally give him a child and manage to melt his stony heart, making him entirely mine. I no longer wanted to divorce or run away; I wanted to make this work, and my hopes were high. However, over time, I saw him slowly drift away from me, and our union became increasingly unsus
I was approaching the car when I felt an icy hand grab me. Before I could lift my eyes, I noticed an umbrella being placed over my head, and the rain that had once fallen so steadily ceased as if by magic. My eyes rose, and I saw a man standing before me. He was handsome, with his sharp jawline and eyes as dark as the night. He looked very concerned, but I had no idea who he was or what he was doing there. Just what I needed—someone to bring me more problems.“Are you okay, Emma?” His mention of my name surprised me. Where did this man know me from?“I’m fine, thank you?” I tried to recall if I had seen him somewhere before, but nothing came to mind.He held the umbrella above our heads while opening the car door for me. He noticed my puzzled and frightened look as I stood still before the open car door, trying to understand what was happening.“I apologize; you certainly don’t know me,” I watched as he removed one hand from the suit he was wearing and extended it toward me. “I’m Edwa
Gregory’s POVI had barely left the office when the secretary came running to me, saying that a woman had been there claiming to be my wife. My blood boiled in my veins, but the moment I thought Emma might have seen what I was doing in the office with Alya, it immediately froze, almost making me stop breathing.I rushed out of the building. It was as if Emma had vanished; no one saw her leave, so I assumed she had gone home. The entire way, I couldn’t stop thinking about it—about Alya and Emma. What, after all, had Emma been doing in my office? It was one condition I had imposed on her: she was not about to set foot in my family’s company. I would only recognize her as my wife after she gave me a child, thus allowing me to finally secure my inheritance. But Emma had disobeyed me. Worse, she had gone to my office while Alya was there. The more I thought about it, the angrier I became. I recalled the day I negotiated with Mason to bu
Pov EmmaThat night, while I was having dinner alone, I heard Samantha telling the other staff that Gregory had gone to visit his grandfather. Everyone seemed to talk about nothing else but Edward’s return. It seemed like everyone feared him, including Gregory himself. My husband didn’t sleep at home that night. But I also didn’t call him urgently like I always did. I called the lawyer Gregory had made available to me and asked him for a big favor. I was going to give Gregory a beautiful surprise the next day, not caring whether he would hate me forever afterward. The next day, I went downstairs for breakfast and told Samantha that I would be going out and to let Gregory know when he arrived. The maid found the information strange, as it implied I would spend the entire day away from home, but she didn’t question me. Samantha was good company and was always around to make my days more bearable.I went back to the bedroom, took off
Gregory’s POVMy eyes fell on the objects on Emma’s bed, and what caught my attention and made my heart race was the shine of the ring, placed so delicately as if she had carefully arranged it to be the first thing I would see.“What the hell is going on here?”I muttered angrily as I lunged for the object and gripped it in my hands. I remembered putting that ring on Emma’s finger when she was still unconscious on the bed. We had just gotten married, and I was holding her injured in my arms. She was such a beautiful young woman that, for a moment, I felt lucky to have chosen her. But Emma had proven to be rebellious against the idea of being married to me.We were two strangers living under the same roof—me wanting my inheritance; her craving her freedom. Although our agreement was still six months from the end, I had thought more than once about divorcing her as soon as my grandfather passed away. I was sure he would die first, that Emma would soon give me a child, and I could rid my
I remember only entering the house and then waking up in my room, with Edward by my side. My head spun like a top and cracked like an exploding bomb as I startled myself by getting up so quickly.“Don’t strain yourself, Emma,” Edward’s hand reached out, touching my shoulders and forcing me to lie down again. “I called a doctor to take care of you.”Still with my eyes closed, I questioned how I had ended up there and how Edward had arrived so quickly. But I couldn’t say anything; I could only think about the life and safety of the child I was expecting. I needed to ensure nothing happened to him.“You shouldn’t have gone out alone,” Edward said again. He ran a hand over his face and cast a worried look at me. “I was told you arrived here very disoriented and faint. What happened? Did someone hurt you?”He touched my hand, but I pulled it back. Should I really trust Edward? My head was now so confused that I didn’t know what to do anymore. I knew Gregory was being accused of blowing up
POV EmmaAfter Edward left, I felt like someone had thrown me into a life that wasn’t mine. A woman like me, who grew up facing hardships and had to learn to work early to help my mother support our home, didn’t know how to lead a fleet of employees.Edward had left over twenty people around me to manage and give orders to, and I didn’t know how to do that. It felt strange to be served and not even get up to wash a glass. When I married Gregory, I realized I needed to go back to my old habits to keep from going mad in that marriage. I would lock myself in the mansion’s kitchen, washing pots and cooking. It became my favorite pastime in the prison I lived in.I couldn’t go out alone, do my shopping, or choose my shoes. Gregory had governed my entire life for two and a half years, and it was as if I had forgotten how to take care of myself.I thought that running away would set me free, but now I felt like I had just moved to another cell. The story was repeating itself. I watched those
POV: GregoryOne hour later, I was standing in front of the police station, surrounded by journalists pointing their microphones at me. What did they want me to say? That I was responsible for the explosion? If I told the truth, no one would believe me.My hunt for Emma was becoming far too dangerous, and I questioned during the drive whether it was even worth it. Edward’s words lingered in my mind—there had to be a bigger reason than just recovering an inheritance that was no longer mine. I owed myself an explanation as to why I wanted Emma by my side.I walked into the chief’s office and only then realized how disheveled I looked. My reflection in the mirror startled me. My beard had overgrown, and my hair was messy. I was a far cry from the handsome and charming man I once was. Since Grandpa’s death and Emma’s disappearance, my life had never been the same.I sat down under the watchful eyes, but it was someone else’s presence that caught my attention. Edward entered the room with
POV. GregoryGregory mocked me in front of everyone. Those people seemed to believe his words. Gregory painted me as a lunatic who urgently needed treatment.“All right, the meeting is over for today,” he said, putting his hands in his pockets, his expression softening. The laughter in the room subsided, and all I heard afterward were footsteps leaving, until no one remained.During those long minutes waiting for the room to empty, I held myself back from doing something reckless. I already had too many problems and couldn’t afford to get involved in another. It was when the last person left the room and the door closed that Edward stopped being the victim and became the villain.“What did you think you’d find in England, Gregory?” I frowned. “Did you think that if I were with Emma, I’d take her to an abandoned house? Don’t you know I haven’t lived in that place for years?”He was trying to drag me into his dirty game to the point of making me believe that I was indeed the one losing
Gregory’s POVI took the first flight that morning, even knowing Edward was back and his inauguration as president would happen that afternoon. I traveled alongside Mason, who was confident he had found Emma.It made perfect sense for her to be in England, the land where Edward had lived his entire life. I had to admit that Mason had been faster than expected.“You seem eager to find your woman,” came a provocative whisper in my ear.I glared at him with disdain as Mason laughed, mocking me.“How could I not be eager? I need to make Emma pay for what she did as soon as possible.”Mason shrugged, and his expression made it clear he didn’t believe me. Over the past few days, several theories about my supposed interest in Emma have emerged, both from Mason and Alya herself. No one could accept that I needed to find her to reclaim what was mine, even if it meant doing so by force.“I heard Edward is taking over the presidency today,” he teased me again. “What difference will it make if Em
Emma’s POVEdward didn’t take me out of the country as I wanted. Instead, he brought me to a farm in the countryside, less than 200 kilometers away from where Gregory was.“I won’t be able to visit you constantly,” he said, hanging his coat in the closet near the house entrance, “but you can call me whenever you want. I’ll always be available.”Certainly, my face showed my disappointment with his decision, but I knew that on my own, I wouldn’t get far from here either. I barely had enough money to sustain myself for long, which was ironic since I had been married to a billionaire for two and a half years. But Gregory purchased everything I had. He rarely gave me money and forbade me from working.I had accepted living like that all those years. I believed I could soften Gregory’s hard heart, but my kindness only pushed him further away from me. Not only that, but I desperately wished I could decide my destiny right now—to go as far away as I could from Gregory and everything that remi
Gregory’s PoVEdward asked for the postponement of his inauguration for the second time. It was obvious he would; he claimed to be traveling for work, but I knew exactly what he was doing. He was taking Emma to another country to hide her from me, believing I wouldn’t find her.I tried to discover where that bastard had gone, but the airline refused to provide me the information, not even for a hefty sum. Edward was clever enough to cover his tracks, but I was determined to outsmart him.I was in my office, piecing together clues about where Emma might be, when Alya walked in unannounced. I only realized it had grown dark outside when I glanced at the window and saw the night. Not only that, but I didn’t say a word to her; I merely watched, annoyed, as she approached and wrapped her arms around me.I immediately pulled away and avoided looking at her, knowing I’d see her disappointment. But Alya wasn’t the type to hide her feelings. If something bothered her, she’d say it outright, bo
POV GregoryPublic humiliation. Newspapers plastered my face across their pages, some even mocking me. How could I forgive Emma for making me go through this hell? She abandoned me, carrying my child. She prevented me from receiving my inheritance, and now all I have left is a mediocre job in the family business while I watch Edward rise to success.I drank the last sip of whiskey and then threw the glass against the wall. I hadn’t noticed Samantha approaching; I only heard the maid’s scream as the object shattered into a thousand pieces just inches from her face.“What do you want, maid?” I demanded, already under the influence of alcohol, my tone harsh and abrasive, making Samantha shrink, seeming smaller than she was.“You have a visitor,” she stammered, tripping over her words. She feared me.I closed my eyes. I knew I owed Samantha an apology for almost hitting her with a glass, though it hadn’t been my intention. But I didn’t like to apologize to anyone. I was a man without regr
Emma’s PoVThe photo showed Gregory on the ground, and the article detailed how Edward, the heir to the inheritance and the city’s new billionaire, had expelled the big loser. My heart burst in my chest. Gregory deserved to go through all of this—I knew that—but I couldn’t shake the feeling of guilt. I had caused all this mess when I decided to leave and leave only a divorce agreement with. Then I remembered Gregory’s last message. He had sent Mason to look for me. The last thing I wanted was to see my stepfather again and witness him reveling in my suffering.I was nervous in the room, dreading stepping out and running into Mason at any moment. It was safer to stay there, waiting for Edward. I turned off my cell phone, removed the chip, but couldn’t throw it away. Perhaps I would need it when my child was born. Maybe Gregory would want to meet him.Unlikely. He hadn’t asked about the child even once. The baby was merely a means to secure the inheritance, and since it was too late, th
