Selene's POV.

I woke up the next day with a small smile on my face. I had managed to shut Jacob up and felt so good about it. Whether or not he was angry with me was his business because I didn't have any grudges against him. He was the one with various ideas that didn't make any sense, no matter how much he tried to make them work.

I headed downstairs and saw him sitting at the dining table with a laptop in front of him. I smacked my lips, announcing my presence, but this stubborn man refused to act like he saw me.

"Good morning Jakob."

"There is nothing good about the morning." He responded sharply. If I wasn't careful he would have bitten my head off. I guess he woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

I glanced around pretending not to also see him, before raising my brows. "Where is Martha?"

"Gone."

I blinked in confusion. "What do you mean gone? She was alive last night, what suddenly happened?"

"How dumb can you be?" He responded sharply again and I rolled my

Selene's POV."We are wastedddd..." Lily's drunken voice filtered into my ears making me roll my eyes. She rested on my shoulder, saddling me with the responsibility of carrying her home. "Why don't you look happy? I'm sorry I dragged you..." She trailed off before letting out a loud snore. So much for wanting to hang out with me. I should have known that she was no good but also wanted freedom after being caged in that house for so long. I would have preferred it if I had just gone to the bar alone. "Please take us home," I told the driver, who nodded through the rearview mirror. I rested my head on the back seat and reached for her phone so that I couldn't tell her parents that she was out with me. They allowed us to mingle together because they believed I was going to set her straight. Taking her home was also not going to be the best way to go so I swiped across her phone screen. I was glad that I knew her password because it was going to prove abortive if I decided to take cha

Selene's POV. "Urgh, my head hurts like hell. I don't even know why I..." Lily complained immediately after she woke up, and I found myself rolling my eyes. She jumped up immediately after she spotted me, or rather immediately after I opened the windows. She wasn't supposed to be here and have me babysitting her when she was an adult in her right and responsible for her actions, but I guess this was what I had signed up for, and I didn't have any right to complain about anything. "You should be happy that I made it a point of duty to take you home last night because you decided to be a pain in my life, and right now, I don't know what to do." I retorted not giving her breathing space at all. If I did that then it was a license for her to continue living recklessly."Selene?" "Were you expecting someone else?" I responded and folded my arms about to launch into scolding her properly. She didn't reply. Instead, she kept on staring at me, probably hoping that I turned into someone e

Selene's POV.I didn't know how to feel at that moment because I knew that I had made a lot of harsh judgments on this man. I mean it wasn't my fault, after all ,he presented himself that way. "I don't need your pity." He snapped at me and I rolled my eyes. There he went again, trying to prove something that was not even in the works. I guess he found pleasure in showing everyone that he didn't need their help which quite frankly I didn't think I was in the best position to help him with whatever he was going through. "Have you even considered if I have any help to offer to you in the first place? I'm just some young lady trying to find my foot in life and expecting me to become a therapist to you is a far stretch. I wont even engage myself in such." I retorted, relishing the fact that he doubled back in shock. "Now that we've got that out of the way? I believe that we can pick to each other like real people and come to a truce." I offered, that was my only way of repaying him for

Selene's POV. "He said that?" Julie asked in a bewildered tone as she cleaned the tabletop in front of her."Of course you did, why do you think I'm angry?" I responded before picking up a dishcloth. For the past few days, my anger knew no bounds and the only way I could express it was to go out to meet my friend, Julie. She was even closer than Lily because I was the one having to babysit such a grown woman simply because she couldn't keep herself in check and now I had to waste my time trying to do a lot just to appease her. She hadn't been picking up my calls, making things even worse. Sometimes I wondered how I was able to get in contact with such a person who wasn't interested in self-development and would rather wallow in discussing issues that didn't pertain to any of our growth. "I don't think he meant anything bad," she began before shaking her head when she realized that she had probably stepped on my nerves around I was not going to respond in a way she like. "I'm only s

Jakob's POV.I watched the time religiously like I had an appointment when I was only waiting for Selene to return from wherever she went. I didn't understand why a person would stay so long outside especially when they knew that there was so much at stake. She was almost robbed a few days ago yet that didn't deter her from painting the town red. I would never understand how some people reasoned. I knew that my words had hurt her, and she had maintained her distance, which I wasn't quite happy with. My mouth was going to land me in trouble one of these days and I knew that for a fact. Funnily enough, I hated the silence; how was I supposed to cope with not having anyone to disturb or try to make me feel lesser than myself? She had a way of getting under my skin and I was hoping that she returned as soon as possible. My phone rang, to my surprise, because I had caused everyone not to be able to reach me except her. "Yeah?""I'm sorry to disturb you, sir. I wanted to inform you that

Selene's POV. "I know right? She is not going to like this especially when she wakes up. I can almost see her eyes rolling in fear when she discovers that..." My eyes fluttered open so that I could get to know those guys who were talking especially in my ear. I saw Julie standing in my room but to my surprise, Jakob was also in his wheelchair, staring at me. "Why is everyone looking at me like I am a ghost?" I asked defensively. Julie's eyes sparkled with mystery and I found myself backing up. What had these two been planning behind my back? I knew that my friend was the most stable person I had in my life right now, but it didn't still stop me from thinking that she might have suddenly abandoned her brain, and that's why she was here with my supposed husband. "I guess this is my cue to leave. Have a nice day, Julie." Jakob responded, making me shake my head in shock. I would never have expected that both of them would suddenly become best of friends. When did this happen and I wa

Jakob's POV.I smiled when I heard the sound of footsteps descending the stairs. I hope she had finally finished berating her friend for calling me when she was in need. That lady had so much spine, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Why the hell was I even thinking about her when I had so many important messages to attend to? Discussing with her friend overnight was going to tell on me today but that was the only way I could also catch a glimpse into her life besides what she had shown me. The footsteps stopped right in front of me, making me raise my head pretending that I had noticed her. "Good morning," Selene said in a soft voice making me squint. Had I mistakenly stepped into an alternate universe where she of old people decided to be sweet to me, especially in the morning after her friend had discussed so many things with me? "Good morning, how did you sleep?" I couldn't help but ask I pretended to stare into her face but freaking hell, she was hot this morning, not eve

Selene's POV.I noticed a pair of eyes on me and looked up right in time just to see him averting his gaze. "If I didn't know better, I would think that you are impressed by me." I joked, watching him roll his eyes yet not still speaking. I didn't know why Julie had ever imagined that this tactic was going to work out. She had promised that it was fail-proof and that she had encouraged a lot of people who had ended up getting men eating out of the palms of their hands. I didn't think it was going to be so in Jakob's case. I knew that calling him my husband irritated him but he was only trying to be as civil as possible. "If I didn't know better, I would think that you have a degree in accounting and have a great eye for detail." He retorted, suddenly sucking the playful atmosphere. Refusing to be deterred, according to Julie's infamous words. 'if you want him to notice you, then you have to do something that no other person has.' I raised an eyebrow; he was goading me just to be

Selene's POV. The doctor might have agreed to keep his mouth shut for now. But I knew better than to rely on just one person to keep my secret. If I wanted to stay ahead I needed a backup plan. My mind searched through the people I knew trying to figure out who I knew could keep a secret or who I could trust but no one came up. They’re all fake and trusting them is like digging my own grave. I inhaled resting my head on the pillow when a mane struck my thought. Roslyn If I can at least give some 50% of my trust it should be Roslyn. She’s unpredictable sharp and good. I wasn’t sure if I could trust her but I also knew she was my best option. I picked up my phone and dialed her number. The phone rang twice before she picked up. “Jordan?” Her voice was steady but I could hear the sight edge of sorry beneath it. “Where the hell have you been?” “Worried about me?” I smirked. “This isn’t funny!” She snapped. “Do you have an idea of what’s happening? Selene's POV The private suite was just as quiet now as when I arrived. The kind of silence that felt unnatural pressing down on me like a weight I couldn’t shake. The steady beep of the heart monitor and the occasional shuffle of the doctor moving around the room were the only sounds breaking the stillness. Pain throbbed through my ribs with every breath a dull ache reminded me of just how close I had come to losing everything. My libs were still sluggish from whatever medication they had pumped into me but my kind was clear too clear. I wasn’t supposed to be here I wasn’t supposed to be alive but somehow I managed to escape death. Maybe that was lucky or not. I was about to ask the doctor for water when he suddenly pulled out his phone his expression tight. He glanced at me before pressing a button putting the call on a speaker. “You need to hear this.” He muttered setting the phone down on the table beside me. I frowned but said nothing he must have something to show me s

Selene's POV It felt like I was floating on my air, the world around me felt like it was spinning. I had never felt this type of hangover in a while, it must have been a crazy night… I thought as I tried to steady myself gripping the sheets of my bed wondering how I had been so careless when muffled voices reached my ears. Slowly I tried to focus on the voices when I heard a slight beeping machine, slowly my eyelids fluttered open and I was faced with a ceiling that was certainly strange making it clear I was not in my room. "You should have been here earlier." A soft feminine voice uttered, making me incline my head in the direction ignoring the throb in my head. I tried to focus on who was speaking. "Annie, don’t start." A familiar voice shot back laced with frustration. "Don’t start?" Annie retorted, scoffing. "He was bleeding out, Josh! Where were you?" Blood. The word sent a slow, crawling heat through my chest. My fingers twitched against stiff sheets, memories flickeri

Selene's POV The beeping of the heart monitor filled the hospital room, the steady rhythmic sounds of my heartbeat had long since faded into the background of my mind. The scent of strong antiseptic clung to the air, sharp and sterile, an obvious and never ending reminder that I was still in this place— bedridden.I let out a little sigh—I had spent enough time on this bed to memorize the exact placement of every single object in the room. To anyone else that might have sounded a little funny.I noticed how the curtains danced in the breeze whenever wind came, it made me crave for the outside world and not the way the cold sheets felt against my skin. Or the numb ache at my sides. But none of these discomforts compared to the unease brewing within me as I turned my head toward my grandmother who sat silently on the cushioned chair next to me.No matter how many times I had tried to shrug the thoughts off, they just wouldn't budge. She had been acting strange for a while now—too stra

Coming from someone who had waited so long to get answers I guess the taste of victory still lingard in my mouth as I tried to figure out what exactly the problem would be if I went on with my idea. Absolutely no one to support me besides myself and my persistent belief that I could do this. I didn't even bother about going on and on above the usual. I just waited and sealed deals from my office. Julie was my greatest supporter as she didn't miss a day to gas me up and tell me how amazing I was. This was the kind of person I wanted in my life who was going to always prove that there was a reason for me to always have sufficient people around. It wasn't going to change the fact that I was going to suffer to bring my vision to limelight even though I had a few agencies who wanted to mingle with me. I had to turn most of them down when I realized that their visions didn't tally with what they wanted me to do. It was always prohibited to mingle with such people as long as t

Seline’s POV Yes! We did it. The joy of the victory I just got spread like wildfire in my body, I couldn’t contain it. The doors of the courtroom swung open and I stepped into the daylight. The sun, high in the sky, hit me with a blend of heat and severe brightness. I had to cover my eyes for a second to adjust to it. I opened my eyes to see a large number of crowd made up of people who Mr Fisher had unjustly robbed in the name of getting treatment in his hospital, and their families, journalists and news agencies all waiting patiently for the result. The moment they all sighted me, a sudden hush fell over them. Some had their palms joined together, mumbling words of prayers. Others simply held hands with or embraced their relatives in hope of good news. “We won!” I declared and the crowd erupted into cheers. Many couldn’t contain their tears and broke down. I held tightly unto the folder of legal documents close to my chest, an evidence of the justice I won for myself and ev

Author's POV. The courtroom air? Stale. Stiff. Like a morgue with better lighting. Dr. Fisher sits slumped. Tailored suit. Empty eyes. His lawyer, a slick weasel in pinstripes, adjusts his tie. 'Nervous'. Prosecutor Amelia Voss strides forward. Heels 'click-clack' like a ticking bomb. She slaps a file on the jury’s rail. Papers flutter. “Ladies. Gentlemen. This man”—she whirls, points at Fisher—“is no healer. He’s a 'chemist of death'.” The jury leans in. Fisher’s pen trembles. “Forged prescriptions. Falsified records. 'Profit over pulse'.” Voss tosses photos—bottles with smudged labels, scribbled dosages. “He didn’t 'mistreat' patients. He 'weaponized' them.” A juror gasps. Fisher’s lawyer stands. “Objection! Speculative—” “Overruled.” Judge Calloway’s voice grinds. Granite face. Ice-chip eyes. “Proceed, Ms. Voss.” She smiles. Feral. “Gladly.” ''' The witnesses come. A parade of ghosts. First: Mrs. Eliza Trent. Apron stained. Hands raw. “My husband… his arthritis
