Marie just stood outside the door, iced up. His phrases had been like a lifeline thrown to her in a sea of uncertainty, a lifeline she hadn’t recognised she wanted until that second.

Her heart warmed, and she felt a rush of emotions. Her mind screamed at her to leave, to let him have this second with Howard, but the door creaked barely beneath the stress of her stillness.
