Morning came and although I didn’t sleep at all last night, my mind felt very clear. Having spent the majority of time last night deep in thought about how I should proceed now that I knew that Reiner was the one that killed my mother. Thinking about it for a long time gave me various perspectives on the issue. The one thing that I realized was that I didn’t know why he killed her. Recalling how Reiner told his story made me realize that he was very focused on delivering the facts of what happened and not the reason behind why things turned out the way that they did. He never told me why he killed my mother. From what I can figure out, Reiner didn’t seem to know my mother personally. He had no reason to kill her, but he did, which probably means that it really was part of his job back then. I believed him when he told me that he killed her. It was a fact that he did. If he didn’t do it, she would probably be alive today…or maybe not…I wasn’t sure…When I first heard Reiner’s story,
“The intended target was most probably Lucien; however, since your mother was driving his car, she took the hit instead of him and died as a result,” Reiner summarized emotionlessly. “So, my mother shouldn’t have died…?” I asked as my mind reeled at the thought. This was all so confusing for me. However, it was clear that Reiner didn’t intend to kill my mother. That didn’t bring her back though, and that didn’t fill in all those empty years without her by my side. I blinked as warm teardrops rolled down my cheeks. Quickly, I raised my hands to wipe my tears away but surprisingly, his hands beat me to it. I could feel the warm heat from his fingertips as it glided gently on my cheeks to wipe away my tears. It was just a fleeting thought but at that moment, I thought that that was one of the gentlest touches that I have ever felt in my life. Reiner, I wondered if he’d been feeling guilty about my mother’s death all this time. That must have been the reason why he came to serve the R
‘The number that you’ve dialed cannot be reached at this moment. Please try again later’ The female sound of the automatic machine shocked me, and my phone slipped from my hand, falling to the bed beside me. Reiner…is unreachable? How can that be? I blinked rapidly as I tried to snap out of my shock. Grabbing the phone, I started doing what the machine had just told me to do. I tried calling him again…and again…and again. This was now the fifth time that I was listening to the same automatic recorded message but still my brain refused to believe that I couldn’t get in touch with Reiner. Where is he? As my thoughts were running wild in my head, suddenly the door to my room opened. My whipped my head around towards the door so fast that my neck made a cracking sound. However, the person that walked it wasn’t the one that I was hoping and expecting to see. “Natalia…” My eyes widened in shock and before narrowing in recognition. Why he is here? Where is Reiner? “Zak…” I said, my vo
**A Week Later**Going home was something that Reiner didn’t look forward to and that was precisely why he hasn’t been home in many years. After running off and living life as he pleased for many years, he had decided that it was time to head home. Unfortunately, he owed his old man some explanations and perhaps an apology or two. All in all, Reiner still disliked the idea of going home. A few days earlier, Reiner received a call from the old man asking him to take on a job. That was the moment that he truly regretted telling the old man that he was going to head home. It was just like the old man to make some profit to line his pocket in all situations. “You’re heading there anyways…” the old man said like it was no big deal. “Find someone else,” Reiner snapped.“It’s a C-rank job. It should be child play for you…” the old man said. “Exactly. Anyone can do it. It doesn’t have to be me,” Reiner argued back. “The client requested for you. They’re willing to pay the rate of a S-ran
While his head was wrapped in thoughts, the destination island came into view. Reiner had mixed feelings as he stared at the island that was his home from above. On one hand, he sort of missed the place and wanted to visit after being away for so long. On the other hand, he didn’t want to face the complications of his family and the never-ending demands of his father. A normal life wasn’t something that he had. He rubbed the back of his neck and flexed his stiff shoulders before he started to prepare for landing. Reiner hoped that whatever he was transporting wasn’t fragile items because he didn’t think that the landing would be smooth. After landing the plane, Reiner took a look at the phone that he was given for this mission. Now that the plane had landed in the correct designated location, he should be receiving a message on what to do next. Reiner stared at the phone screened as he wished that the instructions would say something along the lines of ‘just walk away’. The phone vi
The shocked expression on his face was priceless. I guess my surprise worked extraordinarily well. Never even in his wildest dreams, would Reiner expect to see me here and like this. This is all thanks to Zak’s genius of an idea. When Zak proposed this option to me, I couldn’t believe how crazy it was. The crazier thing was that I accepted even without thinking twice. Although I was overly worried about leaving Zak, I still decided to do it. It was like it was the most natural option for me. I chose to jump on this plane so that I could be with Reiner without considering anything or anyone else. **Around a Week Ago**“I’m about to say something pretty crazy, but will you hear me out?” Zak asked as he stared deeply in to my eyes. “…Sure…” I replied. I had no idea what Zak was about to say but his next words left me reeling back in shock. Zak smiled at me a little before he bit on his lower lips to gather his thoughts and prepare his next words carefully. My eyes were glued to his p
“This wasn’t what we agreed!” Reiner shouted exactly when the line connected. The old man on the other side of the line winced at the loudness and aggression in Reiner’s voice. Although he was expecting this reaction from Reiner, he didn’t think that it would be this bad. It was extremely rare for Reiner to raise his voice like this. “I have no idea what you’re talking about…” the old man said passively. “I’m sending her back!” Reiner shouted loud and clear into the phone. “You can’t do that…” the old man stated. “Of course, I can. You knew about this, didn’t you?” Reiner said accusingly. “Does it matter?” the old man replied without a care. “I’m sending her back. She cannot be here,” Reiner repeated his intention again. “The client specifically ordered for her to be delivered…” the old man countered sternly. “I don’t care!” Reiner roared into the phone. “Even if I tell you that the client is your father?” the old man asked followed by a low laugh. “…What?” Reiner exclaimed
“This place is your home?” I asked curiously. “The entire island actually…” Reiner muttered. My eyes widened in shock as I stared back and forth from his face to view outside. I wasn’t sure what I had in mind regarding where Reiner came from and his home, but this clearly wasn’t it. Was he born and raised here on this island? Finally, the car came to a stop and the doors were jerked opened by armed men that were standing outside. Reiner got out of the car, and I did the same. At least, guns were not being pointed at us anymore. When I got out of the car, I came to face with an enormous mansion in the French riviera style. I don’t want to sound like a snob but since Reiner was hired by my family as a butler, I never imagined that his house would be as large as Lucien’s if not larger. My eyes scanned the landscape of the large mansion and the vast garden in front of me before returning to Reiner’s face. Reiner stood with the sun shining in his red hair as he also took in the sight o
