As Rena caught the eye of the human with the emerald eyes, her whole world tipped. There was only one man she had met in her long lifetime that had such stark green emerald eyes as Blaine had. She felt rooted, frozen to the spot she was in on the dancefloor as the floor felt like it had fallen away. She was deaf to Val's words as he called to her from a distant, far shore. She was so certain she would never see that man again, after suffering such heartache as she had.
Tears fell silently from her eyes, falling unnoticed down her face as she fell from memory to another; all the heartache crashing back into her like a tidal wave. Blaine's face swam into her mind even as everything went dark around her and her body began to fall. Guests gasped and shouted as Valerian moved like lightening to catch his baby sister before she became injured from fainting.
Val frowned as his eyes moved over toward the balcony to where Rena had been staring before she fainted. He knew of only one person who could shake his sister's composure like that. Part of him felt rage knowing that Blaine had snuck into the ball, while the other part of him hoped beyond hope that maybe that meant that Thanerick had also shown up and he could finally be reunited with his love after all those years.
While he would love to reunite with his love and act as though those five long years hadn't happened; Val worried about what the human princes coming back to the Southern Realm meant for their kingdom. It did not bode well for Valerian, after the hell he and Thane had suffered at the hands of Dorian; he shuddered at the thought of what the blatant insubordination would bring.
Oh but how he missed his Thane, his beautiful prince. Val chuckled as he carried Rena from the ballroom and into an empty dressing room so she could have privacy.
Val rememebered catching the eye of Thanerick at a ball similar to the one he had left. Thane's eyes shining from behind a golden eagle mask. A stark difference to Val's peacock one. It felt like a whole lifetime had gone by since those happy days. Dark had become Val's days after Dorian found Val and Thane and discovered their secret relationship. Val's thoughts turned dark as he recalled the healers and their 'healing fires' that scored his flesh to "cure" him of his impurities. His punishment was nowhere near as horrible as Thane's however. He hadn't heard anything of Thane after Dorian had ordered Thanerick taken from Valerian, until Rena ran into his room in tears followed by Sandrine carrying Thane in her arms; unconscious and in need of rapid healing.
They had taken Thane to the healers of the Valkyrie kingdom, he had needed to stay in bed under strict care for dehydration and injuries gained from being flayed by a cat-o-nine tails. Dorian had thrown Thane into a stockade for days after making sure he was whipped for his odd afflictions.
Val still bore the scars from the healers' fires, and he knew Thane still unfortunately bore the scars on his wrists and back from his own tortuous hell. Rena moaned in Val's arms as he laid her down gently on a chaise, he worried that she wouldn't come out of whatever fit this was for days. After Blaine broke her completely, Rena had stopped everything in her life. As if she had stopped time itself in her own workings, even leaving her apprenticeship as a healer to rot as she chose to stay in her chambers.
Five years, Val thought darkly; it had been five years, but for his baby sister it was still a fresh wound that had been recently cut.
Five Years Prior Valerian: Valerian sat in his private chambers, finishing up paperwork for pay increase for his men throughout the ranks of the military. He would never forget how the whole of his men had rioted when he had been taken away to the healers. His lieutenant explained to Valerian that none of the men cared whatever lover he chose as he was the best commanding officer they had had for three millennia. Better wages for his men, better living quarters and better weapons were the only things a commanding officer could give his men; and Val hoped that they would be happy with these things. Banging knocks on his bedroom doors pulled Val's attention away from his papers as he slowly stood to answer the door. Opening the doors, Val nearly missed catching Thanerick as he instantly fell into his lovers' arms, almost inconsoable. "Val! Val, you have to tell them I won't do it! Tell Blaine and that damned Dorian I won't do it! I won't leave you!" Thanerick wailed as Vale
Rena: Five years prior Rena hummed happily as she walked through the corridors of the castle, reading from one of her favourite books. Fall was near, she could feel it on the air; the days were growing shorter with a slight chill hitting the air every day. Rena kept humming, thinking of Blaine and how happy he made her. Everyone had someone, she thought; all except for Vera. Val had Thane, Valena and Sandrine would be married soonl and Rena had Blaine. Rena only wished she could find someone for her oldest sister Vera. Even though Blaine and Thanerick were humans, Rena reflected; the whole of her kingdom in the Southern Realm had accepted the two men. Rena, lost in thought; found her feet had taken her to her beloved gardens. The wind slowly blew a few of the leaves off of a nearby tree and they floated down into the pond. Rena sat on the bench near the pond, gigg
Present Times Valerian was still resentment for how Blaine and Dorian had blindsided Rena and he. He knew it wasn't fair to not include Thane, but Val also knew the two older men had used military tactics in order to make sure the younger man had obeyed his orders. He recalled the days after, how it took all of his being to handle even the most menial of tasks. Seeing Rena in the state of catatonia worried him, it had been nearly six years since that heartbreak. In those six years, she hadn't fully recovered. While he had his military tasks to keep him focused and busy; Rena had barely left her private chambers. It had disturbed him immensely as she had recently taken on an apprenticeship as a healer. She had been avoiding her duties in her apprenticeship; he worried what it would mean for her. When the master healer, Ivian; called on Valerian about Rena, he explained to her the whole of it. Ivian had promised Val that Rena would retain her apprenticeship and could continu
Vera still giggled over whatever her partner had said to her as they continued into the room. "That's so ridiculous! How..I...oh, well hello...everyone." Vera said meekly as a blush crept up her cheeks. Rena only rolled her eyes as Lena stifled a snigger behind her hand. Vera's partner remained silent as he smirked derisively and his eyes glinted from under his mask. Silver flashed in Valerian's eyes as Rena noticed recognition hit Val's face. Rena barely had time to grab Val's arm to stop him. Val's usual stoic composure was only ever broken by only one person in the whole of the Seven Realms. Rena's eyes narrowed as she realized why her brother strained against her hold. "Well, well; Hell itself must have frozen over. Dorian what have we done to cursed...I mean graced by a serpent like yourself?" Rena asked quietly through gritted teeth. Her hate for Dorian beat out any hatred she bore for the man who had broken her heart. Sandrine scowled, glancing sharply over to
Valerian felt the vice on his chest grow tighter as he stormed through the palace, down toward the gardens. Throwing his mask down into the dirt, Val huffed out a breath as he fought to control his emotions.Sitting down onto a nearby bench, Valerian sighed; silently damning Dorian and whatever plot he was currently conspiring. It was true that Valerian hadn't seen Vincent in the more recent years. There had been rumor of Vincent leaving the human kingdom forever; forsaking all of his birthright. Rather than the peace travels that Valerian knew Vincent had been on for years. The nasty, twisted rumors had to be of Dorian's doing. But why? Valerian couldn't understand what had caused Dorian to start all of his nefarious plotting. Especially the vile treatment of Dorian's own kin. Valerian wondered if the human was ruthless enough to actually cause his own father's failing health."Damn that bastard! Vincent, my brother; how I hope you are well." Valerian's head dropped into h
Rena sighed as she leaned against the ballroom wall; gazing out at all of the dancers on the floor. She watched as her eldest sister danced with every eligible suitor she could charm. Vera laughed as a tall human male with a grey wolf's mask whisked her away from her now sour dance partner. Rena only narrowed her eyes as she lost the couple in the crowd. She had a sinking feeling that she recognized that human; but leaving Vera to her fun, Rena decided to try and locate her second sister Valena. So devoted was she to her search, that Rena missed the hand that grabbed her around the waist and turned her quickly. Squealing with laughter, Rena cocked an eyebrow up at her only brother as she smacked him lightly in his shoulder as he chuckled. "Valerian?! What in the Seven's name?!" She said trying to sound curt but she could only grin as her brother laughed. Val's aqua-coloured eyes twinkled with mirth from behind the peacock's mask he sported every spring. He continued to la
Rena giggled as Val sent her into another spin on the dancefloor. As Rena went into a spin to spin back to her brother, a distant figure in the crowd caught her eye. Rena froze as her deep violet eyes roved over the crowd to find the person she thought she had seen. She stopped searching as she spotted the tall human in the simple black mask with deep emerald eyes. His eyes flashed as he turned and caught her gaze from across the room. Blaine knew as he caught the eye of the elven princess in the silver butterfly mask, that he had found his Rena. He bowed slightly as his mouth turned up into a grin before he moved silently out onto the balcony and started down the outer balcony stairs. It had been years since Dorian had ordered Blaine to end his relationship with Rena, but Blaine had decided years prior to sneak into the Southern Realm to steal far away glances of his lost love. Thanerick, Blaine's younger cousin had had a hard time with having to end his own relationship wi
