Chapter 5

Lucas’s hands trembled as he shook my arm.

“Clara, wake up. How did you end up like this?”

He glanced at the flowers again, his voice growing more frantic.

“There are so many flowers here. Are they making you uncomfortable? Let me take you home, okay?”

He knelt beside me, his eyes red, desperately shaking my arm as if by sheer will alone he could bring me back.

I had never seen Lucas like that—so vulnerable, so utterly broken. I stood there, frozen in place, tears slipping silently down my face.

Troy rushed forward, ready to pull Lucas away, but Lucas wouldn’t be moved.

He was rooted to the spot beside me.

“Haven’t you done enough?” Troy hissed, his voice filled with barely contained fury. “Clara’s gone. Can’t you leave her in peace?”

Lucas slowly turned his head, his eyes wide in disbelief. “No… no, that’s impossible. Clara asked me to buy her medicine just the other day. This can’t be real.”
