I had woken up early with Xander to go find Leo. Xander had given me a blanket and asked me to wait in the hallway before entering the room. Once he called me in, I lifted my hand with the oil lamp and entered the darkness. Through the flickering flame of the light, I noticed the small boy lying naked on the ground.

As I gazed around the room, my curiosity was piqued by the deep, bloody scratches that marred the stone walls. The room was sparsely furnished, with only a small table and a lone chair, which seemed to have been placed there for a specific purpose. Xander had confided in me that he often stayed with the boy during the restless nights, and the chair was used to keep the boy company.

Xander had explained to me that, as an Alpha, he commanded the respect of wolves, and his innate strength made him more powerful than most shifters. Thus, Leo’s wolf never posed a threat to him. To others, that was another issue entirely.

However, there were times when Leo became a danger to himself, and Xander had to take measures to restrain him. I could see the shackle that Xander used to bind Leo securely around his neck and one leg, a stark reminder of the boy’s struggles. Those were the chains I had felt the first time I had been in the room.

When I reached the boy, I placed the light on the ground and pulled the blanket over his tiny body.

Xander carefully slid his strong arm under Leo and lifted him up. Together, we carried him back to his room and gently laid him down on his bed. We then proceeded to clean him up, wiping away any blood or sweat from his face. After that, we tucked him in and I placed my hand on his chest, feeling the steady rise and fall of his breaths.

Leo looked completely drained and exhausted from last night’s change, and I couldn’t help but wonder what he went through during his shiftings. I carefully removed a few hair strands that were stuck on his tiny face, making sure not to disturb his sleep.

“I love it when you have that look in your eyes.”

Curious, I asked, “What look?”

Xander replied, “That one—full of love and acceptance. You have such a big heart, and Leo is lucky to have you watch over him when I’m not here.”

His words made me smile.

We stayed with Leo until Xander had to leave for work. He had some important business in the city with one of the factories. Once he left, I checked on Leo one last time before heading over to the library to continue my quest for potential areas where I might find books on magic.

Despite hitting many dead ends, I refused to give up on finding something that could help me. Xander had brought me some archived scrolls, which I hoped could hold the information I needed.

I was lost in my thoughts when a small “ahem” brought me back to reality, and I looked up to see a footboy gazing at me. He wore the same clothes as Leo when working on the floor.

“Yes?”

“Miss, Duke Kestrel has requested your presence in his cabinet,” the boy replied.

I felt my heart racing in my chest. The duke’s reputation preceded him, and I had heard that he could be very callous. I was nervous about meeting him without Xander.

“Of course! Let me make myself more presentable for the duke,” I started to say, but the footboy quickly cut me off.

“He requested your presence at once.”

I knew better than to keep Duke Kestrel waiting. I gathered my things and followed the footboy, hoping that this meeting would be brief and uneventful.

Luckily, I was wearing one of the new dresses that Xander had specially commissioned for me, which I thought would be appropriate to meet a duke. The dress was a simple, yet elegant, high-necked, deep blue dress with a buttoned front and a slightly tight bodice that perfectly accentuated my curves. I had styled my red hair in a messy bun at the back of my head, and small ringlets of it fell unevenly to my shoulders and back. Xander had previously mentioned his preference for redheads, so I decided to keep my hair in its natural colour. However, I couldn’t help but feel slightly apprehensive about my choice. On Xander’s floor, I was safe, but I couldn’t say the same thing when I left its safety.

I got up from my chair and followed the young boy to the elevator, my heels clicking against the smooth marble floor. He led me through a series of winding corridors before stopping at an imposing door. He knocked on the door, and I heard a muffled “Come in.” As I stepped inside, the boy swiftly closed the door behind me, leaving me alone with Duke Kestrel.

Duke Kestrel was sitting at the end of an enormous oval table, his hands splayed palm-first on the smooth surface. It appeared he was studying a map, but I couldn’t quite see what it was. The room itself was grand, with high ceilings and a large fireplace at one end, but it felt cold and uninviting, with animal heads mounted on wooden platforms displayed as trophies. Most of them were wolves…

The air smelled of men sweating like pigs debating politics and strategies with their lord. In any case, it was clear that ladies were rarely welcomed in this space—if they were even allowed in the first place.

When I entered the room, the sound of my shoes clicking on the floor caught his attention. He immediately stood up from his chair and examined me closely, placing his thumb and forefinger under his chin in a thoughtful gesture.

I could see how Xander had passed as his son and heir. Although he didn’t resemble his father, Duke Kestrel had the exact imposing figure. He towered over me with thick, powerful arms and legs and a large chest. His uniform was adorned with numerous military medals, a testament to his service to the kingdom and his high rank under King Osprey.

Even though his light brown hair was neatly combed and his uniform was impeccably pressed, it was his piercing ocean eyes that caught my attention. They seemed to bore into me, as if they could see right through me, through all my lies and secrets. The intensity of his gaze made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I lowered my head as a sign of respect, as it was proper etiquette to do so. I also wanted to avoid drawing attention to my face in case the duke recognized me. I doubted he would. I didn’t recall ever meeting him in my previous life, but I didn’t want to take any chances.

The silence in the room was uncomfortable and lasted for a while. Finally, the duke stretched out his gloved hand, and I hesitantly placed mine in his. His hand was so large that mine looked like that of a small child.

“Miss Ida, it is a pleasure to meet you in person.” His voice was deep and gruff, and his statement seemed cold and insincere. It was my first time seeing him since they sold me to his estate.

The knots in the pit of my stomach were twisting again. I had a feeling that the duke’s pleasantries were just a facade.

“I must say, you really are quite eye-catching. I can see why my son is so enamoured by you.”

The Duke gestured for me to follow him to the end of the table where he had been sitting earlier. He pulled out a chair and sat down, but did not offer me one. I remained standing, my hand still locked in his strong hold, feeling nervous and uncertain about what was to come.

“The only reason I am even considering this engagement is because my son has shown no interest in marrying a girl for over twelve years. I must admit that I was curious to meet the young woman who changed everything, especially given that you arrived only one year ago to work on my estate. How fascinating…and convenient,” he said, his voice laced with a hint of amusement.

The duke looked at my left hand and paused for a moment as if deep in thought. His brows furrowed in confusion but then quickly shifted to a smug expression.

“I see my wife has already given her consent; otherwise, she wouldn’t have given this ring to our son for his future bride. The ring on your finger is one of her most prized possessions. She refused to take it off after our wedding, insisting on wearing it along with her wedding ring.”

Was it a ring that Markus had given Lucia?

The duke remained silent for some time, lost in thought. Eventually, he stood up and pulled me closer to him, his grip tight and unyielding.

“Now, I have been more than truthful with you, and I expect the same in return. I will ask this once, and if I am satisfied with your answer, you will be free to leave. Do we have an understanding?”

I nodded. “Yes, Your Grace.”

“Good. Who do you work for?”

As I listened to him speak, confusion clouded my mind, leaving me unable to comprehend his question. I lifted my gaze to meet his, hoping to find some clue in his expression, but his face remained impassive, and his lips were tightly pressed together.

“I worked as an indentured maid for you, Your Grace, for High Hill Estate. Lord Alexander gave me my freedom only a short while ago,” I answered truthfully.

Then, without warning, Xander’s father reached out and placed his other hand over mine, taking me by surprise. He exhaled deeply and offered me a soft smile, seemingly trying to put me at ease. But, before I could react, he twisted one of my fingers with a sudden jerk.

With a loud pop and snap, my finger was painfully displaced, and I grimaced in agony as I felt a searing pain shoot up my arm. The once straight and graceful finger was now horribly bent out of shape, with the nail pointing downwards, a far cry from its previous position.

My knees gave out, and I fell, choking on a scream. Duke Kestrel still gripped my hand in his and took another finger. I started sweating from the pain and instinctively circled my left hand over his wrist, trying to free myself from him.

“Let’s try this again. Who do you work for?”

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I tried to answer. The words didn’t want to come out. I couldn’t breathe.

He bent my finger incorrectly, and the pain skyrocketed again. I clawed at his wrist, desperately trying to get away. It was as though someone had placed a red-hot poker on the nerves of my hand.

“Please!” I cried, “I don’t know what you want me to say!”

“Were you sent by those rebel dogs to infiltrate my establishment and get your hands on information that could help with their rebellion against King Osprey?”

“No! I don’t even know what you are talking about! I don’t know of rebels or a rebellion. I’m just a maid. I’m nobody!” I pleaded with him.

I wanted him to stop. I knew nothing of what he was accusing me of.

Duke Kestrel pinched a new finger and broke it in the same manner as the two before.

I screamed.

The pain was so intense that black spots were blurring my vision. I hoped I would faint. At least I wouldn’t have to feel this raging agony.

There was a crash in the room, and I suddenly felt my hand being freed from its restraints. I fell to the ground, writhing in pain, and cradled my injured hand. The scent of pine and earth that filled the room was familiar, and I soon realized that Xander had come to my rescue.

He picked me up from the ground and held me in his arms, and I clung to him tightly, trying to make sure that he was real and not just a figment of my imagination. His eyes were darker than I had ever seen them, and I could barely make out the whites of his eyes. I felt a wave of emotions, which were clearly Xander’s feelings, wash over me. He was both angry and scared, and his instincts were telling him to either fight or flee. I knew that he had to calm down, or else he would end up giving himself away to his father.

I slid my left hand up to his face and caressed his jaw. I hoped that my worried stare would make him understand this.

“What is the meaning of this!” Xander roared at his father. He kept his eyes on me, probably unable to calm his Lycan side.

“Alexander, understand that I had to do this for us! They have infiltrated our network. I know it! This bitch probably works for the rebels attacking our defences and stealing state secrets! She could be using you. You know where our loyalties lie.”

Xander’s teeth were now bare. I could almost see his sharp canines growing. He was getting ready to attack.

“Please, don’t do it,” I whispered so only he would hear.

His face contorted in a snarl at my request. I sensed the raging storm lessened slightly, but he struggled significantly from within.

“If she is a spy from the resistance, I will deal with it myself. Nevertheless, I am confident that she is who she says she is. With this said, if you ever come near her again, so help me Faiths, there will be hell to pay.”

Carrying me tight to his chest, he turned on his heels and exited his father’s cabinet by kicking the door wide open.

Xander POVAs soon as I opened my eyes, I realized that something was wrong. Ida was sleeping next to me, but she was shivering and sweating profusely. The sheets around her were sticking to her damp skin, and I could feel the heat radiating off her body. The smell emanating from her was strange, and it made me worry.I gently touched her cheeks and found that they were red and hot to the touch. She was running a fever. I knew I had to act fast to help her.Yesterday, the butcher had promised to send someone over in the morning. I just hoped that the help would arrive in time before anything else went wrong.Ida’s bandaged hand was resting near the edge of the bed. Her three fingers stuck out, held by splinters and dressings. Saul had said she’d have to keep it for at least three to four weeks, with regular bandage changes, until which time someone would re-examine and adapt the splint to how her healing was advancing.Last night’s events had left me anxious about Ida’s safety. The journey to Xander’s country house was quite arduous, as we did not take any breaks during the nights. Instead, we relied on the coachmen to switch shifts so that they could rest between driving. We were traveling in two carriages: one for Xander, Leo, and me, and the other for the staff that accompanied us. The latter carriage was larger than ours, which allowed for their comfort and the rotation of coachmen.Along the way, we occasionally stopped for Diana, the head maid, to tend to my injured hand and change my bandages. I was taken aback when I saw her in Xander’s room on the day after my fingers were broken, carefully tending to my wounds. I had always thought that Diana disliked me when I was a maid, as she was often severe with my work. She was probably stricter than the housekeeper, to whom she reported.Lucia had been a constant presence by my side as well, offering her support and care. She sat beside my bed and would alternate with Diana, taking turns to replace the cold

In my dream, I found myself gazing up at the sky, and that’s when I saw it—a cardinal bird, with its plumage a striking shade of red, soaring gracefully through the air. The sun shone down on it, making each feather shimmer and gleam, as if it were a precious jewel. The bird then landed on top of an old tree, with its branches stretching out in all directions. From there, it surveyed the forest below, as if keeping a watchful eye over everything.Suddenly, a bolt of lightning lit up the atmosphere, and before I knew it, the old tree had caught fire. Flames quickly consumed the tree, burning the cardinal with it. For a moment, I thought it was all over, but the bird flapped its wings with all its might, defying gravity, and rising up into the air once again. As the fire scorched its feathers, they grew back stronger and brighter than before. The fire disappeared as quickly as it started, and the cardinal took to the sky once more, leaving a trail of blackened smoke behind it.As I watch

Gideon suddenly dropped to his knees and grabbed the front of my dress. He looked deep into my eyes and exclaimed again, “Princess Cressida!”My face turned pale as I tried to push Gideon away. The two other men present also looked at Gideon and then at me before bowing down on one knee and lowering their heads.Xander, who was also present, had taken a few steps back, obviously shocked at what was happening. I began to hyperventilate, and Diana quickly grabbed my arm and pulled me back inside the house. She guided me to the loveseat in the main room and helped me remove the layers of winter clothes I had on. After that, she put a kettle on the fire to boil some water. I attempted to unbutton my dress, but my left hand wasn’t cooperating. My fingers were shaking, and I couldn’t feel them.“Come on, hand! “I’m a magic wielder,” I stated with certainty. Xander looked perplexed. He knew that in our world, there were only three types of beings: shifters, wielders, and humans. I was a wielder, plain and simple.Despite his confusion, Xander went to the bathroom to examine the bite mark on his shoulder once again. “We need to investigate this further. I’ve never heard of anything like this happening,” he said, his voice serious. “Was your mother a wielder as well?” “My father had no marks on his body, so she couldn’t have been a shifter. And she didn’t show any magical abilities, so I always assumed she was human,” I replied, feeling uncertain and confused about my identity. “Hmm. Let’s keep this to ourselves until we understand what it all means.”I smiled weakly at him. He was right to keep this between us. None of it made sense.Xander put on a fresh shirt. He had to go to the salt mines for an inspection, a task that he clearly wasn’t looking forward to. Judging by his expression, he

Diana sat on a small stool beside me. She was focused on making sure I repeated the movements she had instructed me to do. The exercises were repetitive, but I could feel the difference in my hand’s mobility in the days after we started. Diana was patient, and she helped flex my fingers when needed, massaging the scarring to promote healing. She encouraged me to keep bending my fingers, even though it often hurt. She had removed the splints from my hand, but I still needed to keep my three fingers bandaged for a couple more days to ensure they healed correctly. The splints had made me itch terribly, so I was relieved when they were removed. For three days, we had been travelling on the road toward Maple. However, our journey took an unexpected turn when a sudden snowstorm hit us. The path we were on slowly became impractical, and we knew that we had to find shelter soon to avoid being stuck in the carriage, completely snowed in.The storm was relentless, pounding the path for nearly a day. We were worried about the horses, who were pulling our carriage, as the snow was getting deeper and deeper. We were afraid that they might get stuck or, even worse, break their legs since they couldn’t see where they were stepping.“I know a place where we can go until the storm lessens. It’s a small inn, maybe a half-hour ride from here. It will suit our party, and I think we can make it!” shouted Gideon from outside the carriage.“Are the horses too deep in snow?” Xander asked.“Not yet, but if we continue waiting for the storm to pass, they might be, and we won’t be able to get there.”Xander nodded and closed the carriage door. The whip cracked in the air. I felt the leather strings touch my lower back, and as Shrike pulled, I could feel my skin lift and tear. Once the hooks were out, I was flung back near the post. I stopped breathing and tried to control the pain. I had not expected that. “The show is for my personal amusement, as well as to install fear in your mind. Fear in the body is no fun, but fear in the mind, now that is entertaining. Regarding the reasons why I am doing this… let’s just say it’s simply to pass the time until the king arrives, and then we get down to the nitty-gritty.” I felt the leather touch the inside of my ribs. Again, the skin pulled as the hooks receded. Shrike inflicted four more hits, but those had been higher on my back, where my skin was thicker. It pained me less than the previous ones, but I still had to muffle a cry. I started sweating from the pain and noticed that my feet and knees were slipping in the small pool of blood that was accumulating under me. At this rat

Xander POVAs Ida and Diana left the house, I felt a sudden urge to warn them again against attending the meeting. Over the past few weeks, we had noticed a significant change in her, and even Gideon had mentioned it to me. But we were both at a loss as to what it could be. I couldn’t believe that two prime shifters, like us, couldn’t tell what was wrong with Ida.Leo walked out of the house and looked at me with pleading eyes, hoping to join us. I ruffled his hair and smiled, but had to disappoint him and leave him behind.“Keep Nimu in the house and ensure everything is ready when we return. I closed my eyes and allowed my thoughts to focus on unlocking the memory orb. I sensed the magical energy emanating from the glass sphere and let my own energy flow into it, absorbing some of its power. I slowed my breathing, listening to the vibrations passing through my fingers and into my body. I imagined the orb as a small, delicate package, tied with multiple taut strings that protected its contents from being revealed.I whispered an unlocking incantation, trying to tug at the invisible strings within the orb. I felt my magic tugging at the strings, but they refused to budge. I tried again, chanting the incantation with more intent. I sensed the energy within the orb vibrating in response to my magic, but the strings still held fast.I decided to try a different approach. I would force the strings and break them. I summoned all the energy I could muster, feeling my body heat up and the orb becoming warm as well. I focused my power on the strings, envisioning them snapping under

I took out one of my fancier dresses to wear for my outing, and Xander’s voice echoed in my mind, reminding me of the potential dangers that lay ahead. “You both could walk into a trap,” he had warned me. It was both comforting and frustrating at the same time. But I knew that in this case, he was right. After several days had passed without any response from Denis, we came to the conclusion that he had no intention of assisting us, and so we began to prepare to leave the city. Diana was extremely upset after learning that her brother was still alive but had not replied to her note. She was on the edge of a breakdown, and I could see the turmoil in her eyes.“Did he read the message you gave him?” Diana asked me repeatedly. We had already discussed this subject multiple times, and I had given her the same answer each time.“I’m not sure. All I know is that Denis took the note and put it in his front pocket. Can you please tell me what was on that piece of paper I gave him?”Diana continued folding our clothes, appearing deep in thought and keeping the note a secret from us. Her behaviour had caused quite a stir with Xander, who was afraid that Diana might betray us and sell us out to her brother. We had been stuck in the house for three long days without anyone coming to get us. Xander, who was usually patient, had become irritable from waiting for so long. The day had dawned early, and we had eaten our breakfast quickly, eager to set out for Cardinal City. We had enough food packed to last us the rest of our journey, and we knew it was less than a day’s ride away. Our plan was to go directly to the Kestrel’s house, which they owned and used when summoned to court. As we set out, I felt a sense of foreboding as we approached my old home. The memories of Cardinal City, once beautiful and happy, were now tainted by the events of the uprising.Cardinal City sat atop a mountain. The steep rocky mountainsides protected it, and the only way in or out was through the thick, dark forest that lined it from the south. It reminded me of a peninsula, except air surrounded it, and the city was high above the clouds. It was technically a stronghold. The northern, eastern, and western sides of the city were fortified with walls that blended with the jagged rocks of the mountain. The natural rock walls descended toward the ocean, while the ramparts above

On the morning we left Starling Castle, we encountered Gideon and Leo on horseback while we reached the outskirts of Perch. Xander had predicted that we would meet them on our way out, and he was proven right. Gideon seemed anxious to see us so early in the morning, and his demeanour was tense. However, after Diana and Xander explained what had happened, Gideon’s mood also became sour.Despite the tension, I was thrilled to see little Leo again. He was a sweet and lively child, and his presence was a welcome distraction from the others’ brooding mood. He sat between Gideon’s legs, holding the horse’s mane. When he saw me, his eyes lit up, and I moved my horse closer to Gideon’s, inviting Leo to come and sit on my horse for a while. He happily obliged, and we rode together for a bit, chatting and laughing as we went.I wasn’t sure if they had used the forest path to leave the city of Maple, but I knew their horse must have been exhausted.
