CHAPTER 1
My head throbbed, each beat matching the slow, pulsing ache behind my eyes as I squinted against the morning light pouring into the hotel room.
I reached for my phone, hoping to check the time, but froze at the sight of an unread message. Blinking, I rubbed my temples, half afraid of what awaited me.
"Congratulations on your marriage. Here's your wedding picture. Happy married life!"
My heart skipped, and I bolted upright, instantly regretting the movement as nausea washed over me.
With trembling fingers, I opened the attachment.
There it was—a photo of me and a tall man, his face shadowed, holding a marriage certificate.
I was laughing, eyes slightly glazed, looking deliriously happy, even if I could barely recognize myself.
"This has to be a mistake."
Panic rushed through me as the events of last night trickled back—the music, the drinks, the stranger who seemed to understand my every unspoken word, the wild thrill of something forbidden, something I should have avoided but didn't.
And somehow, somewhere down the drunkenness, a marriage certificate.
My hands shook as I scrolled back to the message's sender. I dialed the number, fingers clumsy as dread pooled in my stomach. A woman's voice answered on the other end.
"Good morning, Mrs. Gold," she greeted cheerfully, oblivious to my panic.
"Uh… hi. I need some help. The man in the photo with me... could you give me his contact number?"
There was a brief pause as if checking with my words and wondering why I wouldn't have my husband's number before she replied, "Of course. Just a moment."
Seconds later, a new number popped up on my screen. Heart racing, I dialled, praying for some miracle explanation, some easy way out.
The line clicked, and a deep, velvety cold voice broke the silence. "Who is this?"
The chill in his tone made me momentarily forget why I'd called. I cleared my throat, forcing out the words. "This is… Kaia. Kaia Gold. I'm, um, the woman you married last night?"
Silence.
Then, after what felt like an eternity, he sighed, sounding more irritated than surprised. "What do you want?"
"I… We need to get this annulled. A divorce," I stammered, each word tumbling out faster than the last.
"Fine. Let's meet. One hour, in front of the marriage registry."
Before I could respond, the line went dead.
I exhaled, my shoulders sagging with a strange mix of relief and embarrassment. Right. Now to tell Shawn somehow.
At least I had a bit of time before our wedding to plead with him and make this right.
**************
Shawn's apartment was quiet as I let myself in, the faint scent of his cologne and last night's after-party lingering in the air.
My heels clicked on the floor as I navigated the familiar space, my mind scrambling for a way to explain. He would understand, right? A mistake—nothing more.
"Shawn?" I called softly, hearing no answer. Quickly, I made my way to his bedroom.
My steps slowed as I noticed a trail of clothes leading to the half-open bedroom door, a smirk tugging at the edges of my lips. Probably one of his friends playing a prank.
As I pushed the door open, a soft rustle and a familiar laugh drifted out. Before I could make anything out, a lacy red bra and already worn panties fell from the top of the door and landed on my head.
I yanked it off, the absurdity of the situation sinking in as I stared at the matching panties hanging from the doorknob.
In the dim light, I could just make out two figures on the bed, Shawn's bare back turned toward me, his arms wrapped around someone. And not just anyone. I recognized that red hair, those freckled shoulders—Summer. My nemesis.
My shock melted into fury as I threw the bra and panties at them. "Am I interrupting something?"
Shawn jerked, fumbling as he turned to look at me, his face pale and his mouth dropping open.
Summer gave a pretend gasp, but she didn't move, shamelessly clutching the sheet to her chest with a smug smile.
"Kaia! I… I can explain!" Shawn stammered, his voice filled with desperation and guilt.
"Explain?" I spat, every syllable dripping with rage. I glared at him, my hands clenched tight. I didn't know why men always felt there was an explanation for their cheating.
"You think you can explain this?" My voice grew louder, each word seething with anger as I stepped closer. "The wedding's off, Shawn. You can keep your cheap thrills and this trash." I nodded toward Summer, who gave me a snide little smirk.
Shawn reached out, trying to touch my arm, his eyes wide with pleading. "Please, Kaia. Don't overreact."
I didn't give him a chance to say more. I slapped him, the sound echoing off the walls, and he stumbled back, hand to his cheek, shock filling his eyes.
"Overreact?" I repeated, my voice cold. "We're done. I'm done." I turned on my heel, walking away with my head held high, leaving the remnants of our engagement—and my broken heart—behind me.
The clock read 8:00 a.m. I had a meeting to get to and an unexpected husband to face.
****************
Forty minutes later, I stood in front of the marriage registry, the morning chill seeping through my thin jacket. My heart hammered as I saw him—the stranger from last night.
He stood by the steps, hands tucked in his pockets, his gaze unreadable as it settled on me. Blaze. That was his name, I vaguely remembered.
He looked at me, his face as stoic as it had been over the phone. "You're here for the annulment."
I nodded, but as the words formed on my lips, something stopped me. A strange feeling, one I couldn't quite name. I swallowed, choosing my words carefully. "Actually, I had a different idea. What if we... kept the marriage?"
One of his eyebrows lifted slightly, a glimmer of surprise breaking his icy demeanour. "Why the sudden change of heart?"
Heat flushed my cheeks, but I held my ground, refusing to let him intimidate me. Rather than answer, I changed the topic. "Six months. Just long enough to get my life sorted. It can be mutually beneficial. No complications."
Blaze gave a short, humourless chuckle, his eyes narrowing. "This morning you were hell-bent on an annulment and now what? Can't go without me for a few hours, can you?"
My cheeks burnt as a flash of anger flared. This was a mistake. What was I hoping for with this rude, stoic man?
"Forget it. We can just go inside and get this over with." I turned to walk toward the registry door, ready to end this farce of a marriage.
Before I could take another step, his hand shot out, his fingers closing around my wrist. He tugged me back, just enough to make me stop and meet his gaze, which was suddenly sharper, almost intense.
"Wait," he said in a low voice. "I…" There was a brief hesitation. "I accept your proposal." I blinked, not believing my ears. "But only for six months. And we'll do this my way, with terms."
I glanced down at his grip on my wrist, my skin tingling beneath his touch. "Fine," I muttered, pulling free from his hold and meeting his cold stare head-on. "I'm ready. What are your conditions?"
Blaze's lips twitched, almost a smirk, as he replied, "We'll sign a contract with terms that protect us both. You'll stay in my home, play the role of dutiful wife and have no outside... entanglements during the duration of the contract."
I swallowed, the reality of what I'd suggested sinking in. This was no longer a spontaneous decision made in the haze of last night. This was calculated. This was real.
"Alright." I kept my voice steady. "Let's get the contract ready, then I'll sign."
He gave a single nod, and together, we walked away from the registry. As his cold eyes met mine one last time, I couldn't shake the feeling that this marriage, temporary or not, was only the beginning of something far more complicated than either of us could imagine.
"I'll give you my card details. Once you are ready, give the number a call and someone will be there to pick you up to my house…" I parted my lips to speak but before I could utter a word, he cut in, "but only after you sign the contract."
**************CHAPTER 2I swear I did not understand him. What did he feel like? We were both doing this for our selfish gain. Why did it seem like I had just dug my grave?I shook my head, tossing the thought to the back of my mind as I drove home. My eyes flickered to the card on my dashboard before focusing on the road. I arrived at my parents' house, ready to tell them the news, when my father's cold voice made me stop. "She did what? Kaia broke the marriage?"I inhaled. I should have expected this. Shawn would make a fuss trying to use my parents to control me. Stepping into the living room, I met my parents, both dressed for the occasion. My dad had his phone pressed to his ear, clearly in a conversation with that cheat."Dad." He froze, ending the call and turning to look at me. My eyes glanced around, taking in the sight of my mother seated opposite him, watching with a worried expression on her face, "Mum, I can't marry a jerk. I know he is well to do, but he is a cheat."
**************CHAPTER 3While my mind played around my new surname, Blaze's estate came into view. It was breathtaking. Every inch of it was grand and meticulously designed. A butler led me through the vast, silent halls until I found myself in a lustrous living room, and there he was, standing with his usual stoic expression. My heart skipped, but I forced myself to act calm. He did not say anything more than a welcome after I greeted him before leading me into a private study.I sank into the leather chair across from him, feeling the pressure in the air. He slid a thick stack of papers across the desk. "This is the contract," he explained calmly. "The essentials are straightforward. For now, we'll present ourselves as a couple to our immediate families and a few close friends. No one else needs to know."I frowned, staring at the words in front of me. "Then why even bother with the marriage? Wasn't the whole point to keep people off our backs in the first place?"I know I sounde
**************CHAPTER 4~Kaia's Pov~For a second, I couldn't believe it. Termination? I opened the email and read the brief, cold message from HR. Effective immediately, my employment was terminated.Shock, confusion, and then anger hit all at once. It didn't take three guesses to know who was behind this. Shawn. His revenge for me left him, a way to punish me for not playing along. I could practically hear Shawn's smug laughter behind it, but instead of feeling defeated, I just felt… angry. So typically stupid. But I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of watching me fall. Setting the phone down, I took a deep breath. I'd wanted to leave that job anyway; all he'd done was speed up the process. My mind raced with possibilities. I knew exactly what my next move was going to be.I set my jaw and fetched my laptop from my bag, the only belongings I picked from my parents' house. Thankfully, I had spent a night there before my bachelorette to tend to some pressing work and left it the
**************CHAPTER 5~Kaia’s POV~By the following day, I had nearly forgotten about Shawn’s antics. Since we planned the wedding for Sunday, normal life began shortly after.Until now, I have not bothered to switch on my phone and have allowed myself some well-deserved rest while my brain has been replaying Shawn's betrayal. One might have found this stupid, seeing as I was straining my brain with pain and hurt but the truth was, I needed to remind myself why men were scum.I switched on my phone as an influx of messages came through but I ignored them, placing my phone on the table. I knew I owed people like my two best friends an explanation but now was not the time. I had lost a job and needed a new one ASAP. Six months may be long but it would be over quickly. I needed to secure a prosperous future for myself.I was still waiting to hear back from the companies I’d applied to when my phone buzzed with an email notification. Skimming the message, my eyes widened. It was an
**************CHAPTER 6~Kaia’s POV~He sat there, impossibly relaxed, his sharp suit tailored to perfection. That infuriating smirk tugged at his lips as if he’d been expecting this exact reaction. My bag slipped from my fingers, landing with a thud that echoed. The door open and the HR rep’s head popped in; her expression tinged with nervous energy when she darted her gaze frm me to Blaze. “I’ll just, uh, leave you two to it,” she stammered before retreating like she’d seen a ghost.I stood motionless, my heart pounding against my chest. My mind raced, disbelief and fury sparking desires within me. Of all the people I could’ve imagined behind that desk, why did it have to be him? Finally, I managed to croak, “You’re the CEO?”His smirk deepened. “Surprise.”I could feel my blood boiling. “You didn’t think to tell me?”“Would it have made a difference?” His calm, almost amused tone made me want to scream.“Yes! It would have,” I shot back, squaring my shoulders. “I came here as H
**************CHAPTER 7~Blaze’s POV~The door clicked shut behind her, and I allowed myself a rare moment of amusement. Kaia was fire wrapped in stubbornness, and though I’d expected resistance, her defiance had a certain charm.I walked back to my seat and leaned back in my chair, replaying the last twenty-four hours in my mind. From the moment she walked into my office, bag slipping from her fingers to her demanding why I’d hired her as my personal assistant—it was a show of fierce determination and vulnerability I hadn’t anticipated. She was a formidable presence. I respected that. When her application for the Head of Finance position landed on my desk yesterday, it caught my attention immediately. Not because of her qualifications—though they were impressive—but because of the name attached—Kaia Gold.It was the same Kaia who had, in a whirlwind of bad decisions and mutual desperation, become my wife. That night at the lounge, I’d seen her across the room, her laughter carefre
**************CHAPTER 8~Kaia’s POV~Later that night, I stood by the large window in my bedroom, staring out at the city lights as I tried to quiet my restless mind. Blaze’s words kept replaying in my head, his calm, arrogant declaration that I should work “where he could see me,” echoed in my mind. The sheer nerve of him.I crossed my arms, frowning as the memory of his smirk surfaced. This wasn’t just a job anymore—it was a challenge. It was a test of willpower. And if Blaze thought I’d roll over and play the obedient little assistant, he was in for a rude awakening. For now, though, I’d play his game. But I’d play it my way.Movement below caught my attention, and I peered down to see Blaze’s sleek car pulling into the driveway. My heart gave an involuntary jolt as I watched him step out, his broad shoulders silhouetted in the glow of the headlights.I wasn’t sure what I’d expected. Maybe that he’d come upstairs, knock on my door, and issue another round of commands. Maybe even
**************CHAPTER 7~Kaia’s POV~My eyes widened as I scanned the document Blaze had pushed across the desk. It was a detailed merger proposal—complex, high-stakes, and riddled with financial projections that would challenge even the most seasoned analysts. But that wasn’t what shocked me.The name of the company stood out like a beacon on the first page. Caldwell Enterprises. My heart stuttered, and I glanced up at Blaze, who was now lounging back in his chair with that infuriating smirk.“This is…” I trailed off, trying to keep my voice steady.Blaze’s gaze sharpened. “A merger proposal,” he said smoothly. “Caldwell Enterprises approached us last month. Their CEO is eager to partner with Apex Global. I want you to evaluate it, assess its viability, and draft a preliminary report by the end of the day.”I bit the inside of my cheek, my emotions whirling. He knew. He had to know. There was no way this wasn’t intentional.Shawn Caldwell’s name wasn’t explicitly on the document, bu
**************CHAPTER 57~Kaia’s POV~I could feel the hunger in his touch, the barely restrained desire. And yet, beneath it all, there was a tenderness I hadn't expected.I clung to him, my fingers tangling in his hair, his clothes, anything I could grab.I wanted more.I needed more."Blaze," I gasped, my body arching off the bed as he kissed his way down my neck, his tongue tracing patterns on my heated skin.Blaze smirked, nipping at the sensitive spot where my shoulder met my neck. "Is this what you want?" he asked, his voice low and husky.I whimpered, my hips bucking involuntarily. "Yes," I breathed, my eyes fluttering shut as pleasure washed over me."Or would you like me to quench your desire?"I happily nodded, unsure of what his question truly meant. But it was all the permission Blaze needed. He tugged my dress down, baring my bra, and then the gown was completely off.My cheeks burned at the thought of Blade seeing me almost half naked, but the next second, he leaned do
**************CHAPTER 56~Kaia’s POV~Blaze’s voice penetrated through the fog in my mind. The moment the three men turned, a force of raw fury crashed into them.Blaze.I barely had time to process what was happening before Blaze’s fist connected with the first man’s jaw. The sickening crack of bone against bone echoed through the corridor. The man staggered back, blood spurting from his nose.Jesus! Before the second man could react, Blaze spun, delivering a brutal kick to his stomach. He doubled over, gasping for air, but Blaze didn’t stop there. His rage was unchecked. He grabbed the man by the collar and slammed him against the wall so hard the paintings rattled. “Touch my wife again,” he growled, his voice deadly, “and I’ll break you.”The third man, clearly realizing he’d made a mistake, tried to bolt. But Blaze was faster. He caught him by the back of his shirt and yanked him backward, sending his knee crashing into the guy’s gut.The man let out a choked gasp before collapsi
**************CHAPTER 55~Kaia’s POV~The moment I stepped downstairs, I could feel the shift in the air.Blaze stood at the bottom of the staircase, dressed in a black tuxedo, his hair styled just enough to look effortlessly put together. His blue eyes flickered up, and for the first time tonight, his usual cocky smirk vanished. His gaze raked over me, from the deep emerald silk gown hugging my figure to the high slit that teased my thigh with every step I took.I knew I looked good. And from the way Blaze’s jaw clenched slightly, I knew he knew it too.I descended gracefully, keeping my expression composed. “Are we late?” I asked as I reached the last step.Blaze blinked once before schooling his face back into its usual unreadable mask. “No,” he said, offering me his arm. “But you sure know how to make an entrance.”I smirked and looped my hand around his arm. “That’s the idea.”With that, we headed out.**************~At the Event~The venue was a masterpiece—elegant chandeliers
**************CHAPTER 54~Kaia’s POV~Shyne.I knew that name.At Blaze’s uncle’s birthday celebration, I had seen her approach Blaze, a woman too poised, too familiar, and clearly accustomed to getting attention. Even then, I had noticed how his entire demeanour barely shifted the second she appeared—his features hardening, his irritation barely concealed.Back then my anger or jealousy didn’t make me see it, but later, when I thought about it, he masked it, which was why I thought he was entertaining her.And now, here she was, calling at this hour.I wasn’t sure what to think. Was she just some annoying family friend? Someone his father had imposed on him? Or was she—I cut off the thought before it could fully form.Blaze hadn’t even responded yet. He just sat there, his grip on his phone tightening.I suddenly felt like an intruder in a conversation I wasn’t supposed to be a part of.“I’ll leave you to it,” I murmured, stepping back and smoothing the creases of my apron, as if
**************CHAPTER 53~Kaia’s POV~Blaze’s phone call lasted longer than I expected. He had walked out of the kitchen, irritation across his face as he answered. I lingered for a moment, listening to the deep rumble of his voice before deciding to focus on dinner. The aroma of roasted chicken, buttery mashed potatoes, and garlic-buttered asparagus filled the kitchen. I plated everything carefully, setting the table like nothing happened even though my mind kept circling back to Blaze’s tense expression. As soon as I was done, I wiped my hands on a napkin and made my way to his room. Just as I reached his door, it swung open, and Blaze stepped out.“Dinner’s ready,” I said simply, stepping aside.Blaze hummed in acknowledgement, his usual smirk absent as he followed me to the dining table. For a while, we ate in silence. It was strange. The teasing, the heated moments, the arguments—all of it seemed to have faded into the background, leaving behind an unsettling stillness. I sig
**************CHAPTER 52~Kaia’s POV~“Bingo… a way to tame the hot CEO, Blaze Black.”Tiffany spread her arms dramatically as if she were staring at a billboard showcasing her master plan. From the couch, Bethany raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “Yeah, Tiff? And what exactly is Lesson 101 on achieving that?”Tiffany spun around, her gaze locking onto me like a predator spotting prey. “Simple,” she said with a devilish grin. “We bring out the seductress in Kaia and tame the untamable CEO.”I blinked. “Excuse me?”Bethany chuckled, throwing a piece of popcorn into her mouth. “You heard her, babe. Apparently, our resident Ice King needs to melt a little.”Tiffany leaned forward, excitement buzzing in her eyes. “Think about it, Kaia. He’s so used to being the one in control. You, on the other hand, always react to his moves. It’s time to flip the script.”I scoffed, crossing my arms. “And how exactly do you expect me to do that?”Tiffany smirked. “By making him want you even more—but giv
**************CHAPTER 51~Kaia’s POV~If I wasn’t awake, the morning sunlight that streamed through the large windows of my bedroom, did so much to wremove the sleep from my eyes.I had just finished my shower, the lingering scent clinging to my skin as I rubbed body cream into my arms.Wrapped in a towel, I hummed ‘Bad Romance by Lady Gaga’, softly, enjoying the quiet moment. But just as I turned to grab my robe—A knock landed on my door. Before I could respond, the door swung open, and Blaze stepped inside like he owned the place.I gasped, clutching my towel tighter. “Excuse me?!” I snapped, eyes wide. “Do you just barge into people’s rooms without permission?”Blaze smirked, completely unfazed. “Technically, I do own this house. That includes this room.”I scoffed, folding my arms. “Not my room. This is my zone, my space. You don’t get to barge in.”Blaze leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, looking far too smug. “Relax, Kaia. It’s not like I haven’t seen a naked woman be
**************CHAPTER 50~Kaia’s POV~It had been a long day. After the bidding, we returned to the office, where Blaze worked like a maniac. His earlier teasing right now felt liek an imaginary thought I had with how focused he was.Based on what he said, thanks to the presentation, he saw a way to tweak the project to better benefit the masses while also giving the elites of society a way to spend their money and show the masses they aren’t all rich bastards. He called for a meeting with his team. After careful deliberation, the project was adjusted, but not in a way that would affect the results.I sighed, cleaning sweat from my brows. I watched Blaze from a distance. He had a glass of scotch in his hand while typing furiously. He had refused to hand the work over to someone else, and from the looks of things, Blaze was determined to see it through.Standing from my seat with my bag in my hands, I approached him, standing in front of his table. "It's late. I should advise you to c
**************CHAPTER 49~Kaia’s POV~The D-day arrived. The conference room was filled with anticipation as we took our seats. Today was the second round of the city project bidding—a make-or-break moment for Apex Global.Blaze sat beside me, exuding his confidence. I, on the other hand, was trying to keep my nerves in check. The stakes were high, and the competition was fierce.Across the room, I spotted David Mercer seated with his team. His eyes met mine briefly, and he offered a polite nod. I returned the gesture, keeping my expression neutral. The last thing I needed was Blaze catching wind of anything and turning this meeting into another unnecessary power play. And trust me, that man’s ego was something else. The government official leading the project stepped forward, clearing his throat. “Ladies and gentlemen, today’s presentations will determine the finalists for the city project. Each company will present its detailed proposal, after which our panel will deliberate. The
