Laura's POV

I might have just gotten us both into trouble.

I thought to myself, my mind racing with fear and adrenaline. This had to be the Rocci's doing. They were the only ones who had a reason to want me dead.

As Kelvin kept driving, weaving in and out of traffic, another shot rang out. This time, Kelvin grunted, his face twisted in pain.

"Kelvin!" I screamed, my heart racing with fear.

He didn't respond, his eyes fixed on the road as he continued to drive. I scrambled up from the floor, my eyes scanning his body for any signs of injury.

A dark stain was spreading across his shoulder, and I felt a wave of panic wash over me. He was hit!

He didn't as much as flinch, his face still twisted in pain. But his eyes remained fixed on the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a gun.

Without taking his eyes off the road, he fired a shot at the sedan's tires. The sound of shattering glass and screeching rubber filled the air as the sedan swerved out of control.

He took advantage of the distraction to speed away, weaving in and out of traffic with ease. I was whimpering and crying, my heart still racing with fear.

But Kelvin's voice cut through my hysteria, his tone low and menacing. "Shut the fuck up, Laura."

I felt shaken to my core, my eyes fixed on Kelvin's injured shoulder. Seeing him get shot like that, without even flinching, was a harsh reminder of the world he operated in. It was a world of violence and power, where getting hurt was just a normal part of the game.

I felt a pang of fear, not just for myself, but for Kelvin as well. He was always so calm and collected, but seeing him injured like this made him seem more human, more vulnerable.

Silent tears fell from my eyes as I stared at him, my heart aching with a mix of fear and concern. I felt like I was feeling his pain on his behalf, like I was the one who had been shot.

His eyes flicked to mine, his gaze narrowing slightly as he took in my tear-stained face. For a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of something in his eyes, something almost like... concern.

But it was quickly replaced by his usual mask of calm control. "We need to get out of here," he said, his voice low and even. "Now."

I nodded, still feeling shaken, but trying to compose myself. I knew I had to be strong, for both our sakes. But as I looked at him, I couldn't help but wonder what other dangers lay ahead, and what the gathering would be like. This was way more serious than I thought.

"We need to get you to a hospital," I said, my voice shaking with concern.

His expression turned grim, and he shook his head. "I can't."

I frowned, confused. "What do you mean you can't? You've been shot!"

He glanced in the rearview mirror, his eyes scanning the road behind us. "We can't risk it. Whoever did this might be waiting for us at the hospital."

I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized the danger we were in. His eyes locked onto mine, and he nodded. "I know a place we can go. It's secluded, and we'll be safe there."

I nodded, trying to trust him. We drove in silence for what felt like hours.

Finally, we arrived at a small cabin nestled in the woods. Kelvin killed the engine and turned to me, his face pale with pain. "Let's get inside."

I nodded, helping him out of the car. He winced as he moved his shoulder, and I felt a pang of guilt. This was all my fault.

Inside the cabin, Kelvin made his way to the bathroom, returning with a first aid kit. He tried to treat himself, but I took the kit from him, my hands shaking as I applied the bandages.

Tears streamed down my face as I worked, my heart aching with fear and concern. I felt him watching me, his expression blank as always.

Suddenly, he chuckled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. I raised my head, looking up at him in surprise. "What's so funny?" I asked, my voice trembling.

His smile grew wider, his eyes glinting with amusement. "You're crying over me," he said, his voice low and husky. "I didn't think you cared.”

Lauren's POV“I’ll be blunt, Miss Lauren. Your mother’s condition is very serious. We have done everything we can, but the situation is delicate. It’s a matter of whether she’ll survive the night.”My heart dropped. The words were hopeless, but I ignored them. “What does that mean? Please, is there anything you can do? Any surgery? A treatment?”My mother's frail hand was firmly clutched in mine as I sat in her hospital room. The beeping of the machine and the antiseptic smell made me nauseous. The doctor paused, his fingers tapping on his clipboard. “There is something we can try, but…” He trailed off, clearly hesitant. “It’s a rare procedure. Expensive. And honestly, it’s… it’s a risk. But if you want to give her a chance, you’ll have to pay upfront. The cost is...”I leaned forward, my grip on my mother's hand tightening.“How much?” I asked, impatiently interrupting him. “Please tell me, I need to know.”His gaze shifted toward the papers in front of him. “Five hundred thousand do

Kelvin's POV The man’s head snapped to the side. His blood sprayed in a satisfying arc across my face. I didn’t stop. My fist came down again, slamming into his jaw with a sickening crunch. “You bastards. You failing bastards.” My voice was eerily calm as I drove my knuckles again and again into his already broken nose. His blood pooled beneath him and he collapsed limp and unmoving.“Answer me,” I said softly, crouching down to his level. He flinched as I grabbed his chin, forcing his face upward. “Who told you to bring her here?” “I…she…” he stammered with a mouthful of blood. “You didn’t think,” I corrected, dropping his head in disgust. “That’s the problem. None of you think.” I straightened, shifting my gaze to the other man pressed against the wall, frozen in terror. His wide eyes darted to his partner, then back to me. “Say something,” I prompted, tilting my head. “You’re the genius who approved this mess, aren’t you?” “Boss, it…it wasn’t like that,” he stuttere

Lauren's POV“Get the doctor ready!” a deep voice commanded, nothing more than a groggy sound to my sore ears as I struggled to wake up.Coldness like nothing I had ever known controlled my body from head to toe, and it was not just cold, I was soaking wet too. Every inch of my body was hurting. Even my eyelids ached as I pulled them apart.“Finally awake,” the deep voice drawled.I lifted my head using more strength than I thought I would. I was still in my clothes coming from the hospital but my pants were ripped at the knee, and there was a pain in my ribs as I took a sharp breath.Flashes of memories attacked me quickly. The gunshot, my father’s lifeless body. The men who had injected me ... How was I still alive?“You seem lost in thoughts.” The deep voice mumbled, reminding me that I wasn't alone. I turned my head sharply, my eyes locking onto the source. A man sat in a high-backed chair beside me. His posture was lazy and his aura was commanding. I could only make out his glow

Lauren's POVI smoothed my trembling hands over the dress I had been given, wishing for anything to distract me. This wasn’t how my life was supposed to go. The maid had made it clear that he wasn't someone I could deal with. But if aligning myself with a devil like Kelvin Aldoracco gave me a way out, a way to fight back, I’d walk straight into hell and keep my head high. The door opened behind me, breaking my train of thought. I didn't need to turn around to know he had arrived.Kelvin Aldoracco. For a heartbeat, I froze in shock at what my eyes beheld. He was far too handsome, the kind of beautiful that was overwhelming, almost impossible to understand. His features were sharp and sculpted, perfectly placed in a way that felt unfair. The monster hiding in plain sight. And today, I was marrying him.He walked toward me with a confident stride, his presence

Lauren's POVThe dress he had sent for me fit perfectly–a floor-length ruby gown that shimmered with every movement. It felt expensive, regal even, but it wasn’t enough to settle the unease brewing in my stomach.I had spent the last few hours getting prepared for whatever new humiliation or test awaited me. I had learnt that Kelvin Aldoracco wasn’t a man who did anything without purpose. Tonight was not going to be an exception.I tugged the silk gloves higher up my arms, glancing at the enormous estate through the car window. Lights spilled from every window, and music buzzed faintly as I approached. The driver opened the door for me, and I stepped out, immediately feeling like I had stepped into a lion's den.I pretended not to notice the stares. Whether they were admiring my dress or assessing how out of place I looked, I couldn’t tell.“Lauren?”The voice froze me in my tracks.I turned and immediately locked eyes with the two people I least wanted to see—my Stepmother, Clarissa

Lauren's POVI had heard a lot about the Aldoracco family, but of course no family dried out their dirty linen in public.Ritual rites? What the hell did that mean? A woman in a sleek black dress and a headset gestured for me to follow her. I looked back to look for Kelvin but he seemed to have gone somewhere.“This way, ma’am.” she urged. The murmurs around the ballroom had shifted from scandalized whispers about Clarissa and Jane’s disgrace to something darker. A hush of expectation filled the air, a current of anticipation I couldn’t quite place. Kelvin was already ahead, his long strides unhurried, exuding the effortless control of a man who knew the world would bend to his will. I forced myself to move, ignoring the pit forming in my stomach. As I followed him deeper into the estate, the luxurious opulence of the ballroom faded behind us. The corridors grew quieter, the air heavier. We stepped into an elevator, the mirrored walls reflecting my uneasy expression. Kelvin l

Laura's POVI had no idea I had fainted until when I opened my eyes hours later in a strange room. It wasn't one bit what I expected. From the painful knee jerking experience I had, I expected blood and gore all over…or maybe, I expected that I was already dead and buried. So imagine my surprise when I found myself alive, hale and hearty with a wholesome spread of breakfast before me. I could only celebrate for surviving the night.Hunger gnawed at my stomach, and I wasn’t about to deny it. Without a second thought, I reached for the bread, tearing off a generous piece and stuffing it into my mouth. The soft, buttery warmth melted on my tongue, and I barely stifled a moan of satisfaction. I didn’t care how disheveled I looked. My dress was wrinkled, my hair was a tangled mess, and my face probably looked like I had crawled out of a nightmare. But none of that mattered right now. Not when there was food in front of me. With each bite, I ignored the quiet rustle of fabric as the mai

Lauren's POV“What do you want?” I asked him again. His confidence was starting to irk me and I really wanted to smack the self-satisfied smirk off his face if I could.“Is that all you've got? That weak, pathetic show you put up, thinking you look irresistible, that's everything you've got?” He answered, throwing his head back in scornful laughter.Chills of shame ran down my spine and I wished I could go back in time to stop myself from putting up the stupid show. I should have just wrapped myself in my towel when he barged into my room. But I wasn't about to give him the satisfaction of seeing me accept defeat.“If you won't tell me why you're in my room, you should get out!” I seethed between my teeth.“Well, what I came here to tell you, before your…show, was that your mother has been moved.”My heart lurched at his flippant statement. Fear and panic fought for dominance over my mind.“What do you mean moved? Moved where? Did something happen?” I let out in a rush.He maintained

Laura's POV I walked out of the boutique, feeling a sense of satisfaction wash over me. I had stood up for myself, and I had come out on top. As I stepped into the mall's corridor, I noticed one of the attendants from the boutique hurrying after me. "Miss, wait!" she called, her voice urgent. I turned, curious, and she caught up to me, her eyes wide with worry. "Please, be careful," she whispered, glancing around nervously. I raised an eyebrow, confused. "What do you mean?" The attendant's voice dropped to a whisper. "You just offended one of the Roccis. They're... not people to be trifled with." I felt a shiver run down my spine as I remembered Stacy's words. "Victor Rocci's daughter," I murmured. The attendant nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "Yes. You don't understand what you've just done. The Roccis... they have power. They can ruin people's lives with just one phone call." I felt a surge of unease, but I stood my ground. "I'm not afraid of them," I said, trying to so

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 61

Laura's POV The bright lights of the shopping mall made me squint as we stepped inside. The cool air-conditioning was a welcome relief from the warmth outside, but my mood was still sour from being dragged out of bed. Kelvin walked beside me, his usual commanding presence making people instinctively step aside while some admired his godly handsomeness. His expression was unreadable, but I knew him well enough to sense the satisfaction beneath his calm exterior. He enjoyed dragging me along to these things, probably just to irritate me. Still, I wasn’t going to complain too much. If I had to suffer through three days of social torture, I might as well look good while doing it. We walked into one of the most luxurious boutiques in the mall, and I immediately started browsing. The soft fabric, the intricate designs, yeah, I was in heaven. I picked up a deep red evening gown, running my fingers over the smooth material. Just as I was about to lift it off the rack, another hand l

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 60

Kelvin's POVThe dim glow of my desk lamp cast long shadows across the office as I skimmed through the latest shipment reports. Something wasn’t adding up. The numbers were there, but they didn’t match reality. A knock at the door. "Come in," I said without looking up. Dylan stepped inside, his usual smugness absent. That alone was a red flag. He closed the door behind him, his posture tense, arms crossed. "We have a problem," he said flatly. I exhaled slowly, shutting the laptop and giving him my full attention. "Of course, we do. What now?" Dylan tossed a file onto my desk. "Some of our goods from the last shipment never made it to the warehouse." I opened the file, scanning the details. My jaw tightened. The missing cargo wasn’t small, whoever pulled this off had either serious guts or a death wish. "How much?" I asked, my voice colder than before. "Enough to make you want to kill someone," Dylan said, his tone dry but his eyes sharp. "And enough that if we don’t

Laura's POVI stumbled into the mansion, my legs trembling beneath me. Every muscle in my body screamed in protest, begging for mercy. I was done. Finished. Exhausted.Physically. Emotionally. Spiritually. Everything hurt. My legs felt like they had been through a meat grinder, my arms were noodles, and my pride? Oh, my pride was dead. Dylan had wrecked me. I had spent the entire session getting tossed around like a damn rag doll, and now every single step I took was pure torture. And it was all Kelvin’s fault. “That manipulative, arrogant, controlling son of a—” I gritted out as I dragged myself down the hallway, cursing him under my breath. If I had one ounce of energy left in my body, I’d march straight to his office, flip his stupid, expensive desk over, and wring his neck. But as it was, I barely had the strength to make it to my room in one piece. Katie, who had been waiting for me in the living room, took one look at me and burst into laughter. "Oh my God, you look

Laura's POVControl. That was what this was about. I stood there, staring at Kelvin, my heart still racing from the bomb he had just dropped. Training? Seriously? Like I was some kind of soldier? Like I needed to be constantly on edge, waiting for an attack? This was his revenge. It had to be. He hadn’t liked that I walked out on him last night. Hadn’t liked that I had held my ground, pushed back, refused to let him have the last word. And now, here he was, demanding control again. I exhaled slowly, keeping my expression neutral even as irritation simmered beneath my skin. "Let me get this straight," I said, crossing my arms. "You want me to train again because of this... gathering?" Kelvin didn't blink. "Yes." "And what exactly is the gathering?" A muscle in his jaw ticked, like he was debating how much to tell me. Which only irritated me more. I raised an eyebrow. "Kelvin." "It's a meeting," he finally said. "One that happens every few years between certain...

Kelvin's POVThe moment Laura walked out of my room last night, head high, voice sharp, and eyes blazing with defiance, I knew. I was in trouble. And fuck, did I love it. I had expected fury. Maybe even tears. But that? That little show she had put on? The way she had smirked at me and sauntered away, knowing full well I was left standing there, naked and fuming? Damn.I let out a low chuckle, shaking my head as I sprawled back on my bed. She thought she had won. Thought she could shake me. Cute. I ran a hand through my damp hair, still smirking to myself. Laura had always had fire in her, but this? This was different. This was a woman who was ready to play the game. And I fucking loved the game. I reached for my phone and dialed Dylan. He picked up on the second ring, his voice gruff with sleep. "Boss?"“We’re going underground,” I said simply. A pause. Then a knowing sigh. “That bad?”I grinned. “That good.” Dylan chuckled. "Alright, give me thirty. I’ll meet

Laura's POVThe moment I stepped out of his room, my heart hammered wildly against my ribs like a bitch.Holy. Shit. I did that. I actually did that. The moment replayed in my mind like a perfectly scripted scene, the way I had shoved him back, the way I had sauntered out like I wasn’t seconds away from completely losing control. And then the way he had stood there, stark naked, with that dark, hungry look in his eyes… A strangled squeal slipped past my lips before I could stop it. I pressed a hand over my mouth, muffling the sound as I hurried down the hallway. My entire body buzzed with adrenaline, a dizzy mix of triumph and absolute disbelief. Kelvin Aldoracco was a bastard. An infuriating, smug, cheating bastard. But for once, I had the upper hand. I practically threw myself into my bedroom, slamming the door shut behind me. Leaning against it, I exhaled shakily, trying to calm the fire still burning under my skin. My hands trembled, but with exhilaration. A giddy

Laura's POVThe city lights flickered, painting the streets in a beautiful mix of gold and silver, but all I saw was red.He left me.I had waited. Like a fool, I had sat in that damn office, watching the clock, assuming he would, at the very least, have the decency to take me home. But no, Kelvin Aldoracco was too much of a bastard for even that.My fingers curled into fists as I walked toward the nearest bus stop. The heels I wore pinched my feet, but I refused to let myself stumble. I wouldn't give him that satisfaction, even if he wasn't here to see it.The bus arrived with a hiss, and I stepped inside, dropping a few bills into the slot before finding a seat near the window.Maybe I should ask Katie how to hide a dead body. Not that I was planning anything. Yet.But the idea of stuffing Kelvin into a trunk and tossing him into the river had a certain poetic appeal. Maybe I’d start with his stupid, expensive ties. Strangle him with one just for the irony. The thought made me smirk
