Kelvin's POV

The air was crisp, laced with the lingering chill of dawn as I slipped out of bed. I moved silently, my muscles fluid from years of training. The dim light filtering through the curtains barely touched her face, but I could see the rise and fall of her chest, steady and peaceful.

She was still fast asleep.

I let my gaze linger for a second longer than necessary before shaking myself out of it.

Focus.

I grabbed my running shoes, stepped into them with practiced ease, and quietly made my way outside.

The estate was eerily still, the kind of silence that only came before sunrise. The air smelled of damp earth and pine, the trees swaying gently in the breeze. I started my usual route, feet hitting the ground in a steady rhythm.

Running was my ritual, my way of keeping control.

But today, something felt… off.

The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end.

I wasn’t alone.

I kept my pace, pretending not to notice the shadow slipping through the trees.

A mistake.

The attack came fast.

A flash of steel, silent, precise.

Instinct took over.

I twisted just in time, the blade grazing my shoulder instead of burying itself in my throat. Pain flared, but I didn’t have time to acknowledge it. I dropped low, sweeping my leg out in a vicious arc.

My attacker leapt back, barely avoiding the blow.

I got my first good look at him.

Black gear. Masked face. Military stance.

An assassin.

My lips curled.

Someone wanted me dead.

I straightened, blood dripping from my wound as I rolled my shoulders. The adrenaline surged, sharpening my senses.

“You should’ve aimed better,” I taunted.

He gave no response. Typical.

He lunged again, faster this time. I sidestepped, catching his wrist mid-swing. A sharp twist, a satisfying crack, he stumbled, the knife clattering to the ground.

But I knew he wasn’t done.

He struck out with his free hand, landing a solid punch to my ribs. Pain exploded through me, but I didn’t falter.

I returned the favor with a brutal elbow to his face.

He staggered, and I didn’t hesitate.

A quick, precise move, I had him on his knees, his own blade pressed to his throat.

His breath came in harsh pants.

“Who sent you?” I demanded.

His eyes, dark and cold, locked onto mine and he remained silent. I smirked. This was not the first time this has happened.

But before I could react, he bit down…hard.

Cyanide.

I cursed, shoving him away just as he collapsed, foam spilling from his lips.

Dead.

Damn it!

I wiped the blood from my brow, my mind already working.

I exhaled sharply, shaking off the tension that clung to my muscles. The assassin’s body lay still, his eyes frozen in that lifeless stare. Typical. Whoever sent him had ensured there’d be no loose ends.

I needed answers, but for now, I needed to clean up.

Wiping my blade on the grass, I shoved it back into its sheath and took one last glance around. No other threats. Not yet.

I turned and jogged back toward the house, ignoring the dull throb in my ribs. The wound on my shoulder was shallow, nothing I couldn’t handle.

By the time I slipped through the back entrance, the house was still quiet. Most of the staff wouldn’t be awake yet. Good.

I climbed the stairs two at a time, heading straight to my room. She was still asleep, curled up beneath the covers, her breathing even. The pillow barrier she’d built between us remained untouched.

I smirked.

Shaking my head, I grabbed fresh clothes and stepped into the bathroom.

The hot water stung as I rinsed the blood from my shoulder. I pressed my palm against the sink, watching my reflection.

Whoever sent that assassin wasn’t playing games.

And that meant I couldn’t afford to either.

After dressing in a black Henley and dark jeans, I pulled on my watch and ran a hand through my damp hair.

Time to deal with the day.

I made my way downstairs, following the scent of coffee and freshly baked bread.

Laura was already at the dining table, her hair slightly damp, a cup of coffee in one hand, and a fork in the other as she picked at her breakfast.

She looked up as I entered, her expression unreadable.

“Morning,” she muttered before taking a sip of her coffee.

I grabbed a cup for myself, settling into the seat across from her.

She arched a brow. “You look like hell.”

I huffed a quiet laugh. “You should see the other guy.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Kelvin…what other guy?”

I leaned back, swirling my coffee lazily. “I signed you up for fighting classes.”

She choked mid-sip. “You what?”

I tilted my head. “You heard me.”

Her brows furrowed. “Why the hell would you do that?”

I met her glare head-on, my tone firm. “Because if someone comes after you, I need to know you can handle yourself.”

Her fingers tightened around the cup, her jaw clenching. “I don’t need you making decisions for me.”

I leaned forward, holding her gaze. “This isn’t up for debate, sweetheart.”

She scowled. “I hate you.”

I smirked, taking a sip of my coffee. “You keep saying that.”

She huffed and stabbed her fork into her food with unnecessary force.

I hid my grin behind my cup.

Breakfast passed in tense silence. Laura kept stabbing at her food like it had personally offended her, while I sipped my coffee, unbothered. I expected her resistance. She was stubborn, one of the few people who dared challenge me without fear.

But this wasn’t up for negotiation. She needed to know how to fight.

I pushed back from the table and stood. “We’re leaving in ten.”

She glared at me. “Leaving for where?”

I grabbed the car keys from the counter. “Training.”

She scoffed, folding her arms. “I’m not going anywhere.”

I arched a brow. “You are.”

Her eyes narrowed in defiance, but I could see the hesitation flicker in them. She was testing how far she could push me.

I leaned down, close enough that she could feel my breath against her ear. “If I have to carry you out of here over my shoulder, I will.”

She sucked in a sharp breath, but I caught the pink tint on her cheeks before she turned away.

“Fine,” she gritted out, standing abruptly. “But I’m not going to enjoy it.”

I smirked. “We’ll see about that.”

Laura's POVI wiped the sweat from my brow, my breathing heavy as I stared at the punching bag in front of me. My arms ached, my legs burned, and every inch of me screamed in protest. This was torture. I hadn’t even wanted to be here. And to make things worse? The bastard was my damn trainer. I should have known. I should have suspected the second he insisted on dragging me here. But I had stupidly assumed he’d dump me with some grumpy old man in a gym and leave me alone. But no. The moment I stepped into the training hall after changing, there he was, standing in the center of the mat like he owned the damned place "You're late," he had said, arms crossed, amusement flickering in his cold eyes. And that was how my nightmare began. Now, after what felt like hours of push-ups, punches, and kicks, I was done. My limbs gave out, and I collapsed onto the mat, sprawled out like a starfish. "I hate you," I muttered breathlessly. Kelvin crouched beside me, his expressio

Laura's POVOne moment, I was drowning in the fire of his kiss, his touch branding me in ways I wasn’t prepared for. The next, he yanked me up so fast my head spun. My breath hitched as he gripped my wrist, pulling me to my feet as if nothing had just happened. What the hell?I barely had time to register the loss of his warmth before he was already moving, his sharp eyes scanning the training hall. His entire demeanor shifted, no longer teasing or smug but calculating, alert. Something was up.“Go home.” His voice was low, controlled.I blinked. “Excuse me?”He turned, and that damn smirk stretched across his lips, but there was something different about it this time. Something dark. Almost… evil.I frowned. “What’s going on?”He didn’t answer immediately. He stepped closer, and for a second, I thought he might kiss me again. Instead, he reached out, brushing a stray strand of hair from my face, his fingers lingering at my jaw. “You should leave,” he murmured. “Now.”I swallowed, my

Kelvin's POVTwo rulers cannot rule a kingdom. But in New York, there were five.Five families. Five kings. Five sovereigns who carved out pieces of the city and held them with an iron grip. The underworld ran on power, blood, and the fragile balance we all pretended to respect. Since the war, that balance has become a delicate thread. Our alliance had been forged in necessity, but our trust had long since turned to dust. And now, it was me who was going to set fire to what little remained.I exhaled slowly, pushing Laura away with more restraint than I thought I had. Her breath was uneven, her lips slightly swollen, her pupils wide as she stared up at me, confused, dazed…tempting.Damn it! This was not part of the plan.I had kissed her to distract her, to buy time and avoid her from seeing who just walked in. Or rather, keep her from being seen by them. But the moment our lips met, the moment I felt her melt against me, it became something else entirely.I almost forgot myself. But

Laura's POVAfter a few moments, the doctor stepped in, offering me a brief update. No change. No improvement. Just the same waiting game I’d been playing for months. I nodded, thanked him, and stepped out of the room, my heart heavier than before. The walls of the hospital felt suffocating, so I turned to the guards. “I need some air. I’ll just take a walk.”They exchanged hesitant glances but followed at a respectful distance as I stepped outside. My mind was elsewhere…on the choices I’d made, on the ones I still had to make.Would I survive this? Or was I only prolonging the inevitable, fighting a battle that would eventually consume me? The thought gnawed at me, filling my chest with a deep, aching uncertainty. It felt like no matter what I did, I was always running in circles, always stuck in the same place, waiting, hoping, fighting. Was I just sacrificing my life for hers?A part of me didn’t mind. My mother had given me everything, even when the world had given her nothing. I

Laura's POVI had bigger things to worry about than an old crush from high school. When the car pulled up in front of the estate, the guards immediately stepped out, their presence a constant reminder of the life I was trapped in. I adjusted my coat and stepped out, feeling the chill in the night air wrap around me. The mansion was eerily quiet. That was the first thing I noticed. Usually, there were subtle signs of life, distant footsteps, murmured conversations, the occasional clink of glass from the lounge where Kelvin sometimes sat with his men.I made my way inside, my heels clicking softly against the marble floor. The dim glow of the hallway lights guided my path as I moved toward my bedroom. All I wanted was a warm shower and sleep. But just as I reached the staircase, I froze. A figure stood near the base of the stairs, watching me. Kelvin’s father. Ezra Aldoracco. I hadn't seen him since the night of the ritual. His presence was like a shadow, dark and unrea

Laura's POVIf there was one thing I enjoyed here, it was the chirping of birds that woke me up in the mornings. I blinked my eyes slowly against the light that filtered in through the curtains.A deep sigh left my lips as I rolled out of bed. Today, I needed to pull myself together. I showered quickly, letting the warm water ease some of the tension lingering in my muscles. After dressing in a simple cream blouse and black trousers, I pulled my hair into a neat ponytail and headed downstairs for breakfast. The dining hall was grand, but today, it felt emptier than usual. Only one place was set. For me. I hesitated at the entrance. The long mahogany table stretched before me, gleaming under the chandelier’s glow. A single cup of coffee steamed beside a plate of toast, eggs, and fresh fruit. Where was Kelvin? And why was no one else here? I pulled out the chair and sat down, trying not to let my nerves show. The silence was thick, suffocating, until the deep sound of foo

Laura's POVA sharp laugh slipped past my lips. It wasn’t because anything about this situation was funny, I was pinned against a desk by a man who could kill without blinking, but because this was exactly what I should have expected. Kelvin Aldoracco, always one step ahead. His grip tightened slightly, his body pressing against mine, caging me in. His green eyes burned with fury, but underneath it, there was something else. Desire. "What's wrong, Kelvin?" I asked, tilting my head. "Got something to hide?" His lips curled into a smirk, slow and dangerous. "You should know better than to ask that, little kitten." I arched my brow. "Should I?" He leaned in, his breath warm against my cheek. "You see, if I did have something to hide..." He paused, letting the tension stretch between us. "Then your dead body might be the next thing I have to hide." A chill ran down my spine, but I refused to let him see it. Instead, I laughed again, shaking my head. "You’re so pathetic." H

Laura's POV A slight tremor ran down my spine, strong enough that he had to have felt it. I couldn't stomach the sight of him kneeling before me and staring at me like I was lunch. I joined him on my knees, sliding my tongue forward into his mouth, seeking his. I held him tightly as our tongues fucked each other, stroking, probing, and sliding across each other. I could feel my heartbeat speeding up, and a tight sensation in my breasts as my nipples began to harden. And then there was a peculiar slightly quivery feeling in my abdomen that I got whenever I was aroused. I knew I was ready to have him, everything that would happen from here was going to be pure ecstasy. My brain had gone on leave. Damn the consequences. When our lips separated, I felt his fingertips brush softly across my cheek and up to my forehead, lightly sweeping hair aside before kissing me on the neck. He started at my jawline, then moved to the base of my neck, finally pressing his lips into the hollow of my th

Laura's POVI might have just gotten us both into trouble.I thought to myself, my mind racing with fear and adrenaline. This had to be the Rocci's doing. They were the only ones who had a reason to want me dead.As Kelvin kept driving, weaving in and out of traffic, another shot rang out. This time, Kelvin grunted, his face twisted in pain."Kelvin!" I screamed, my heart racing with fear.He didn't respond, his eyes fixed on the road as he continued to drive. I scrambled up from the floor, my eyes scanning his body for any signs of injury.A dark stain was spreading across his shoulder, and I felt a wave of panic wash over me. He was hit!He didn't as much as flinch, his face still twisted in pain. But his eyes remained fixed on the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a gun.Without taking his eyes off the road, he fired a shot at the sedan's tires. The sound of shattering glass and screeching rubber filled the air as the sed

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 62

Laura's POV I walked out of the boutique, feeling a sense of satisfaction wash over me. I had stood up for myself, and I had come out on top. As I stepped into the mall's corridor, I noticed one of the attendants from the boutique hurrying after me. "Miss, wait!" she called, her voice urgent. I turned, curious, and she caught up to me, her eyes wide with worry. "Please, be careful," she whispered, glancing around nervously. I raised an eyebrow, confused. "What do you mean?" The attendant's voice dropped to a whisper. "You just offended one of the Roccis. They're... not people to be trifled with." I felt a shiver run down my spine as I remembered Stacy's words. "Victor Rocci's daughter," I murmured. The attendant nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "Yes. You don't understand what you've just done. The Roccis... they have power. They can ruin people's lives with just one phone call." I felt a surge of unease, but I stood my ground. "I'm not afraid of them," I said, trying to so

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 61

Laura's POV The bright lights of the shopping mall made me squint as we stepped inside. The cool air-conditioning was a welcome relief from the warmth outside, but my mood was still sour from being dragged out of bed. Kelvin walked beside me, his usual commanding presence making people instinctively step aside while some admired his godly handsomeness. His expression was unreadable, but I knew him well enough to sense the satisfaction beneath his calm exterior. He enjoyed dragging me along to these things, probably just to irritate me. Still, I wasn’t going to complain too much. If I had to suffer through three days of social torture, I might as well look good while doing it. We walked into one of the most luxurious boutiques in the mall, and I immediately started browsing. The soft fabric, the intricate designs, yeah, I was in heaven. I picked up a deep red evening gown, running my fingers over the smooth material. Just as I was about to lift it off the rack, another hand l

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 60

Kelvin's POVThe dim glow of my desk lamp cast long shadows across the office as I skimmed through the latest shipment reports. Something wasn’t adding up. The numbers were there, but they didn’t match reality. A knock at the door. "Come in," I said without looking up. Dylan stepped inside, his usual smugness absent. That alone was a red flag. He closed the door behind him, his posture tense, arms crossed. "We have a problem," he said flatly. I exhaled slowly, shutting the laptop and giving him my full attention. "Of course, we do. What now?" Dylan tossed a file onto my desk. "Some of our goods from the last shipment never made it to the warehouse." I opened the file, scanning the details. My jaw tightened. The missing cargo wasn’t small, whoever pulled this off had either serious guts or a death wish. "How much?" I asked, my voice colder than before. "Enough to make you want to kill someone," Dylan said, his tone dry but his eyes sharp. "And enough that if we don’t

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 59

Laura's POVI stumbled into the mansion, my legs trembling beneath me. Every muscle in my body screamed in protest, begging for mercy. I was done. Finished. Exhausted.Physically. Emotionally. Spiritually. Everything hurt. My legs felt like they had been through a meat grinder, my arms were noodles, and my pride? Oh, my pride was dead. Dylan had wrecked me. I had spent the entire session getting tossed around like a damn rag doll, and now every single step I took was pure torture. And it was all Kelvin’s fault. “That manipulative, arrogant, controlling son of a—” I gritted out as I dragged myself down the hallway, cursing him under my breath. If I had one ounce of energy left in my body, I’d march straight to his office, flip his stupid, expensive desk over, and wring his neck. But as it was, I barely had the strength to make it to my room in one piece. Katie, who had been waiting for me in the living room, took one look at me and burst into laughter. "Oh my God, you look

Laura's POVControl. That was what this was about. I stood there, staring at Kelvin, my heart still racing from the bomb he had just dropped. Training? Seriously? Like I was some kind of soldier? Like I needed to be constantly on edge, waiting for an attack? This was his revenge. It had to be. He hadn’t liked that I walked out on him last night. Hadn’t liked that I had held my ground, pushed back, refused to let him have the last word. And now, here he was, demanding control again. I exhaled slowly, keeping my expression neutral even as irritation simmered beneath my skin. "Let me get this straight," I said, crossing my arms. "You want me to train again because of this... gathering?" Kelvin didn't blink. "Yes." "And what exactly is the gathering?" A muscle in his jaw ticked, like he was debating how much to tell me. Which only irritated me more. I raised an eyebrow. "Kelvin." "It's a meeting," he finally said. "One that happens every few years between certain...

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 57

Kelvin's POVThe moment Laura walked out of my room last night, head high, voice sharp, and eyes blazing with defiance, I knew. I was in trouble. And fuck, did I love it. I had expected fury. Maybe even tears. But that? That little show she had put on? The way she had smirked at me and sauntered away, knowing full well I was left standing there, naked and fuming? Damn.I let out a low chuckle, shaking my head as I sprawled back on my bed. She thought she had won. Thought she could shake me. Cute. I ran a hand through my damp hair, still smirking to myself. Laura had always had fire in her, but this? This was different. This was a woman who was ready to play the game. And I fucking loved the game. I reached for my phone and dialed Dylan. He picked up on the second ring, his voice gruff with sleep. "Boss?"“We’re going underground,” I said simply. A pause. Then a knowing sigh. “That bad?”I grinned. “That good.” Dylan chuckled. "Alright, give me thirty. I’ll meet

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 56

Laura's POVThe moment I stepped out of his room, my heart hammered wildly against my ribs like a bitch.Holy. Shit. I did that. I actually did that. The moment replayed in my mind like a perfectly scripted scene, the way I had shoved him back, the way I had sauntered out like I wasn’t seconds away from completely losing control. And then the way he had stood there, stark naked, with that dark, hungry look in his eyes… A strangled squeal slipped past my lips before I could stop it. I pressed a hand over my mouth, muffling the sound as I hurried down the hallway. My entire body buzzed with adrenaline, a dizzy mix of triumph and absolute disbelief. Kelvin Aldoracco was a bastard. An infuriating, smug, cheating bastard. But for once, I had the upper hand. I practically threw myself into my bedroom, slamming the door shut behind me. Leaning against it, I exhaled shakily, trying to calm the fire still burning under my skin. My hands trembled, but with exhilaration. A giddy

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 55

Laura's POVThe city lights flickered, painting the streets in a beautiful mix of gold and silver, but all I saw was red.He left me.I had waited. Like a fool, I had sat in that damn office, watching the clock, assuming he would, at the very least, have the decency to take me home. But no, Kelvin Aldoracco was too much of a bastard for even that.My fingers curled into fists as I walked toward the nearest bus stop. The heels I wore pinched my feet, but I refused to let myself stumble. I wouldn't give him that satisfaction, even if he wasn't here to see it.The bus arrived with a hiss, and I stepped inside, dropping a few bills into the slot before finding a seat near the window.Maybe I should ask Katie how to hide a dead body. Not that I was planning anything. Yet.But the idea of stuffing Kelvin into a trunk and tossing him into the river had a certain poetic appeal. Maybe I’d start with his stupid, expensive ties. Strangle him with one just for the irony. The thought made me smirk
