Laura's POV

With every ounce of willpower I had left, I twisted my body sharply, slipping beneath his arm in one swift motion. My heart pounded as I scrambled to the edge of the bed, putting much-needed space between us.

His dark eyes followed my movements, amusement flickering in their depths. His smirk remained, damn near infuriating, as he leaned back against the pillows, completely unbothered.

“Impressive,” he mused, stretching lazily, like a predator who knew the prey was still within reach. He reminded me of a cat lazily playing with a mouse. “I didn’t think you had it in you.”

I shot him a glare, my breath still uneven. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me.”

His smirk widened. “Oh, I intend to find out.”

I exhaled sharply, willing my pulse to slow. This man was a menace. A walking, talking disaster wrapped in an infuriatingly attractive package.

He swung his legs over the bed and stood, rolling his shoulders with the kind of effortless confidence that made my stomach flip. His shirt clung to his broad frame, his movements fluid, controlled, like he was always five steps ahead.

He made his way toward the door, pausing just before stepping out. Then, with a slow turn of his head, he glanced at me over his shoulder, eyes glinting with wicked amusement.

“Sleep well, little bird.”

And just like that, he was gone.

I collapsed onto the bed, exhaling a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding. My fingers curled into the sheets, my mind racing with everything that had just happened.

What the hell was I doing?

My body still hummed with the aftershocks of his touch, the ghost of his lips lingering against my skin. I hated how easily he got under my skin, how he made me react without even trying.

I needed to regain control. I needed distance. I was quickly losing myself in this freaking deal I had signed with the devil and it had just been a month!

Shaking off the lingering sensation of his touch, I pushed myself up and padded toward the bathroom. My reflection in the mirror was a mess, hair tangled, cheeks still flushed, lips slightly swollen from… I groaned, splashing cold water on my face.

I needed to snap out of it.

Reaching for a hair tie, I pulled my hair into a messy bun before grabbing the first comfortable outfit I could find, an oversized sweater and leggings.

Just as I finished slipping on my socks, a sharp knock echoed through the room.

I stiffened.

For a second, my stomach flipped at the thought of Kelvin returning. But no—he wouldn’t knock. He’d just waltz in like he freaking owned the place.

Another knock, followed by a familiar, teasing voice.

“Rise and shine, sleeping beauty!”

It was Katie.

I exhaled, relieved, and made my way to the door. The moment I pulled it open, Kelvin’s younger sister strolled in with all the confidence in the world, her lips curled into an all-knowing smirk.

“I see you’re still alive,” she mused, balancing a tray of food in her hands. “I half expected you to be buried under the covers, nursing a hangover and regretting your life choices.”

I rolled my eyes, stepping aside to let her in fully. “Good morning to you too, Katie.”

She set the tray on the small table by the window, her smirk deepening. “It’s almost noon, sweetheart.”

I blinked. Noon? Damn. That explained the pounding in my head.

Katie plopped onto the couch, crossing her legs like she had all the time in the world. “Brought you breakfast and, more importantly, my grandmother’s legendary hangover soup. You’ll thank me later.”

I eyed the steaming bowl suspiciously. “Does it taste as bad as it looks?”

She gasped dramatically. “How dare you? That ‘bad-looking’ soup has saved lives.”

I shook my head, but a small smile tugged at my lips as I sat down. Katie might have been a menace, but she was a thoughtful one.

“So,” she drawled, watching me with amusement. “You and my brother, huh?”

I nearly choked on my orange juice. “Excuse me?”

She grinned. “Oh, come on, Laura. You think I wouldn’t notice? He never spends the night in anyone’s room.” She leaned in, her eyes gleaming with mischief. “And yet, here I am, delivering you a post-Kelvin survival kit.”

I groaned, rubbing my temples. “It’s not like that.”

Katie arched a brow. “Mmm-hmm. Sure. Tell that to the way you’re blushing.”

I shot her a glare, but she just laughed, clearly enjoying my misery.

“Eat up,” she said, nudging the tray toward me. “You’ll need your strength if you plan on surviving whatever chaos my dear brother has planned next.”

I had a sinking feeling she was right.

I sighed, resigning myself to my fate as I picked up the spoon. The soup smelled… interesting. Hesitantly, I took a small sip, and the moment the thick liquid touched my tongue, my face scrunched up.

Katie burst into laughter. “I know, I know. It’s an acquired taste.”

“That’s one way to put it,” I muttered, forcing myself to swallow. The warmth spread through my chest, oddly soothing despite the initial assault on my taste buds.

I took a few more spoonfuls, my headache easing slightly. Maybe there was some magic in this terrible-tasting soup after all.

Katie smirked. “Told you. Now eat your food before you pass out. You look like death warmed over.”

Rolling my eyes, I reached for the toast and eggs, my stomach begrudgingly welcoming the meal.

As I chewed, Katie tapped her fingers against the couch, watching me with the kind of curiosity that made me nervous.

“So…” she started, dragging out the word.

I swallowed, already dreading where this was going. “So, what?”

She tilted her head. “Kelvin may be a stubborn pain in the ass, but he’s never like this with anyone. He actually stayed in your room? That’s a first.”

I shifted uncomfortably. “It’s complicated.”

Katie hummed, unconvinced. “I bet it is.”

Before she could pry any further, my phone vibrated on the nightstand. Grateful for the distraction, I grabbed it, but the moment I saw the caller ID, my stomach dropped.

It was my boss.

Crap.

I hesitated for half a second before answering. “Hello?”

“Laura, where the hell are you?” My boss’s sharp voice nearly made me wince. “We have a situation, and I need you in the office ASAP.”

I sat up straighter. “What kind of situation?”

“I don’t have time to explain over the phone. Just get here.”

The line went dead.

Well, that didn’t sound good.

Katie raised a brow. “Trouble in paradise?”

I sighed, already standing. “More like trouble at work.”

Laura's POVI rushed through getting dressed, swapping my oversized sweater for a crisp blouse and a pencil skirt. My headache lingered, but there was no time to dwell on it. Katie watched from the couch, arms crossed, a knowing smirk still playing on her lips. “You’re really running away from this conversation, huh?” she teased as I grabbed my bag. “I’m going to work,” I corrected, slipping into my heels. “Uh-huh. Convenient,” she mused, standing and stretching. “Fine, I’ll let you off the hook—for now. But I expect details later.” I rolled my eyes, already heading for the door. “Thanks for the soup. Kind of.” Katie laughed. “You’ll be begging for it next time.” I doubted that, but I didn’t argue because I knew there was no way on earth I was going to get this stupidly drunk again.By the time I arrived at the office, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The usual hum of conversations and the side glances I usually got was missing. Instead, it was replaced with murmurs

Laura's POVI sat at my desk, staring blankly at my computer screen. My fingers hovered over the keyboard, but my mind was far from the spreadsheet I was supposed to be working on. Aldoracco. It had to be a coincidence. Didn’t it? But deep down, I knew better. That name wasn’t common. And if it was him…if it was really him, then my life was about to be ripped apart all over again. This was the one thing I had not connected to him. And now, in some cruel twist of fate, he might be my new boss? I shook my head, forcing myself to think rationally. It could be his father. Or a cousin. Maybe someone completely unrelated. I just had to keep my head down and do my job. If it was him… I’d deal with it then. Nathan’s voice snapped me out of my daze. “Hey, you okay? You’ve been staring at your screen for the last five minutes.” I forced a tight smile. “I’m fine. Just… thinking.” “Well, think fast because we’re all about to be under a microscope,” he muttered, adjusting his tie

Laura's POVI turned back to face him, my pulse steadying as the initial shock wore off. If he thought I’d crumble, he was mistaken. Lifting my chin, I met his gaze head-on. “What the hell is a mafia lord doing playing CEO, Kelvin?”Something flickered in his eyes, amusement, perhaps, but his expression remained composed. He tilted his head slightly, resting his elbows on the desk. “Mafia lord?” he mused, as if tasting the words. “That’s quite an accusation.” I scoffed. “We both know it’s not. You didn’t build your empire with board meetings and stock trades. So tell me, what’s your game this time?” His lips curved into something between a smirk and a sneer. “And here I thought you’d be too busy packing up your desk to ask questions.” I folded my arms. “I like to know when I’m being played.” He exhaled a quiet chuckle, shaking his head. “You never change.” Then, leaning forward, his voice dropped into something more dangerous. “But tell me, Laura, what makes you think you’re

Adam's POVI watched as Laura walked out of my office, her shoulders stiff, her mind undoubtedly racing. She thought she could waltz in here, challenge me, and walk away on her terms. Amusing. She was still the same, fierce, defiant, unwilling to back down. That’s what I always admired about her. But admiration didn’t change the fact that I couldn’t trust her. I turned my chair toward the floor-to-ceiling window, my gaze settling on the city skyline. The company I had just taken over, “Eccho Enterprises” wasn’t just another acquisition. It was a calculated move. A strike against old enemies who had been circling my family like vultures for years. Every company paid taxes. Every company had loopholes. But Eccho Enterprises had more than just financial skeletons in its closet. For years, they had hidden behind boardrooms and legal jargon, pretending to be legitimate. But I knew better. They had been working in the shadows, funneling money to anyone who had a reason to see my fam

Laura's POVThe moment Adam said I was coming with him, every hair on my body stood on end. I wasn’t stupid. The way he phrased it, the way his eyes gleamed with something unreadable, it sent a prickle of unease down my spine. This wasn’t just about business. It never was with him. His mere presence in my office was suffocating. The whispers outside only made it worse. They were watching, wondering if I would dare to refuse. I couldn’t. Not without consequences of course. No one knew about our contract marriage and so they won't understand the underlying current. I swallowed my pride, grabbed my coat, and followed him out. The ride down in the elevator was silent and stiffling. I kept my gaze on the reflective steel doors. They looked more interesting than anything I'd ever seen. He didn’t look at me, but his presence was overwhelming, like he didn’t need to speak to remind me he was there. When we stepped outside, a sleek black car was already waiting by the curb, the

Laura's POVThe air here was natural, clear and untainted by city life. It was expected since we were surrounded by mounting trees. This was a good place to dump a dead body without getting caught. Something tolde he used it for that purpose.I squared my shoulders, forcing my trembling legs to move, refusing to let him see how scared I felt.Kelvin was already a few steps ahead, walking hurriedly in a direction and leaving to scamper after him with my not so long legs. The deeper we went, the more I realized how completely cut off from the world we were. The trees towered overhead, their thick branches stretching wide, casting eerie shadows against the dim evening sky. The only sounds were the crunch of our footwear against the wet soil and the occasional rustling of leaves. I had been so focused on keeping up with Kelvin’s long, hurried strides that I didn’t even notice the house until we were right in front of it. And when I did, my breath hitched. It wasn’t just a house. I

Laura's POVMy heart slammed against my ribs as the old man’s crazed eyes locked onto mine. His grip on the gun was firm despite the slight tremor in his hands. Without warning, he raised the weapon and fired. The deafening blast shattered the silence, the bullet embedding itself into the wall just a few inches from where I stood. My ears rang, and my nose tinged with the sharp scent of gunpowder filling the air. The perfume bottle slipped from my grasp, shattering against the polished floor. I forced myself to stay still, to not flinch, even as my entire body screamed at me to run. If I moved too fast, he might actually shoot me next. His expression twisted with something between madness and suspicion. "Answer me!" he barked, his voice gravelly with age and rage. "Who sent you?" I swallowed hard, raising my hands slightly to show I wasn’t a threat. "I—I’m not an intruder," I said, keeping my voice level. "Kelvin brought me here." Something flickered across his face at t

Laura's POVI took a deep breath and adjusted my grip on the rifle, which still felt entirely too foreign in my hands. The weight was awkward, the barrel long and unfamiliar, and the idea of actually pulling the trigger sent a nervous shiver down my spine. Kelvin’s uncle watched me expectantly, his expression carrying the same level of patience as a wolf waiting for its prey to make a wrong move. “Go on, then,” he said, gesturing toward a branch where another unsuspecting bird perched. “Let’s see if you’ve got any natural talent.” I exhaled sharply and lifted the gun, squinting through the sight. The bird shifted slightly, as if sensing impending doom. My finger hovered over the trigger. I fired. The recoil slammed into my shoulder with surprising force, nearly making me stumble back. The sound was deafening, the sharp scent of gunpowder burning my nose. And the bird? Still very much alive. “Damn it!” I hissed, lowering the rifle. Kelvin’s uncle let out a loud bark o

Laura's POVI might have just gotten us both into trouble.I thought to myself, my mind racing with fear and adrenaline. This had to be the Rocci's doing. They were the only ones who had a reason to want me dead.As Kelvin kept driving, weaving in and out of traffic, another shot rang out. This time, Kelvin grunted, his face twisted in pain."Kelvin!" I screamed, my heart racing with fear.He didn't respond, his eyes fixed on the road as he continued to drive. I scrambled up from the floor, my eyes scanning his body for any signs of injury.A dark stain was spreading across his shoulder, and I felt a wave of panic wash over me. He was hit!He didn't as much as flinch, his face still twisted in pain. But his eyes remained fixed on the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a gun.Without taking his eyes off the road, he fired a shot at the sedan's tires. The sound of shattering glass and screeching rubber filled the air as the sed

Laura's POV I walked out of the boutique, feeling a sense of satisfaction wash over me. I had stood up for myself, and I had come out on top. As I stepped into the mall's corridor, I noticed one of the attendants from the boutique hurrying after me. "Miss, wait!" she called, her voice urgent. I turned, curious, and she caught up to me, her eyes wide with worry. "Please, be careful," she whispered, glancing around nervously. I raised an eyebrow, confused. "What do you mean?" The attendant's voice dropped to a whisper. "You just offended one of the Roccis. They're... not people to be trifled with." I felt a shiver run down my spine as I remembered Stacy's words. "Victor Rocci's daughter," I murmured. The attendant nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "Yes. You don't understand what you've just done. The Roccis... they have power. They can ruin people's lives with just one phone call." I felt a surge of unease, but I stood my ground. "I'm not afraid of them," I said, trying to so

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 61

Laura's POV The bright lights of the shopping mall made me squint as we stepped inside. The cool air-conditioning was a welcome relief from the warmth outside, but my mood was still sour from being dragged out of bed. Kelvin walked beside me, his usual commanding presence making people instinctively step aside while some admired his godly handsomeness. His expression was unreadable, but I knew him well enough to sense the satisfaction beneath his calm exterior. He enjoyed dragging me along to these things, probably just to irritate me. Still, I wasn’t going to complain too much. If I had to suffer through three days of social torture, I might as well look good while doing it. We walked into one of the most luxurious boutiques in the mall, and I immediately started browsing. The soft fabric, the intricate designs, yeah, I was in heaven. I picked up a deep red evening gown, running my fingers over the smooth material. Just as I was about to lift it off the rack, another hand l

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 60

Kelvin's POVThe dim glow of my desk lamp cast long shadows across the office as I skimmed through the latest shipment reports. Something wasn’t adding up. The numbers were there, but they didn’t match reality. A knock at the door. "Come in," I said without looking up. Dylan stepped inside, his usual smugness absent. That alone was a red flag. He closed the door behind him, his posture tense, arms crossed. "We have a problem," he said flatly. I exhaled slowly, shutting the laptop and giving him my full attention. "Of course, we do. What now?" Dylan tossed a file onto my desk. "Some of our goods from the last shipment never made it to the warehouse." I opened the file, scanning the details. My jaw tightened. The missing cargo wasn’t small, whoever pulled this off had either serious guts or a death wish. "How much?" I asked, my voice colder than before. "Enough to make you want to kill someone," Dylan said, his tone dry but his eyes sharp. "And enough that if we don’t

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 59

Laura's POVI stumbled into the mansion, my legs trembling beneath me. Every muscle in my body screamed in protest, begging for mercy. I was done. Finished. Exhausted.Physically. Emotionally. Spiritually. Everything hurt. My legs felt like they had been through a meat grinder, my arms were noodles, and my pride? Oh, my pride was dead. Dylan had wrecked me. I had spent the entire session getting tossed around like a damn rag doll, and now every single step I took was pure torture. And it was all Kelvin’s fault. “That manipulative, arrogant, controlling son of a—” I gritted out as I dragged myself down the hallway, cursing him under my breath. If I had one ounce of energy left in my body, I’d march straight to his office, flip his stupid, expensive desk over, and wring his neck. But as it was, I barely had the strength to make it to my room in one piece. Katie, who had been waiting for me in the living room, took one look at me and burst into laughter. "Oh my God, you look

Laura's POVControl. That was what this was about. I stood there, staring at Kelvin, my heart still racing from the bomb he had just dropped. Training? Seriously? Like I was some kind of soldier? Like I needed to be constantly on edge, waiting for an attack? This was his revenge. It had to be. He hadn’t liked that I walked out on him last night. Hadn’t liked that I had held my ground, pushed back, refused to let him have the last word. And now, here he was, demanding control again. I exhaled slowly, keeping my expression neutral even as irritation simmered beneath my skin. "Let me get this straight," I said, crossing my arms. "You want me to train again because of this... gathering?" Kelvin didn't blink. "Yes." "And what exactly is the gathering?" A muscle in his jaw ticked, like he was debating how much to tell me. Which only irritated me more. I raised an eyebrow. "Kelvin." "It's a meeting," he finally said. "One that happens every few years between certain...

Kelvin's POVThe moment Laura walked out of my room last night, head high, voice sharp, and eyes blazing with defiance, I knew. I was in trouble. And fuck, did I love it. I had expected fury. Maybe even tears. But that? That little show she had put on? The way she had smirked at me and sauntered away, knowing full well I was left standing there, naked and fuming? Damn.I let out a low chuckle, shaking my head as I sprawled back on my bed. She thought she had won. Thought she could shake me. Cute. I ran a hand through my damp hair, still smirking to myself. Laura had always had fire in her, but this? This was different. This was a woman who was ready to play the game. And I fucking loved the game. I reached for my phone and dialed Dylan. He picked up on the second ring, his voice gruff with sleep. "Boss?"“We’re going underground,” I said simply. A pause. Then a knowing sigh. “That bad?”I grinned. “That good.” Dylan chuckled. "Alright, give me thirty. I’ll meet

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 56

Laura's POVThe moment I stepped out of his room, my heart hammered wildly against my ribs like a bitch.Holy. Shit. I did that. I actually did that. The moment replayed in my mind like a perfectly scripted scene, the way I had shoved him back, the way I had sauntered out like I wasn’t seconds away from completely losing control. And then the way he had stood there, stark naked, with that dark, hungry look in his eyes… A strangled squeal slipped past my lips before I could stop it. I pressed a hand over my mouth, muffling the sound as I hurried down the hallway. My entire body buzzed with adrenaline, a dizzy mix of triumph and absolute disbelief. Kelvin Aldoracco was a bastard. An infuriating, smug, cheating bastard. But for once, I had the upper hand. I practically threw myself into my bedroom, slamming the door shut behind me. Leaning against it, I exhaled shakily, trying to calm the fire still burning under my skin. My hands trembled, but with exhilaration. A giddy

  • Flames of love and war   Chapter 55

Laura's POVThe city lights flickered, painting the streets in a beautiful mix of gold and silver, but all I saw was red.He left me.I had waited. Like a fool, I had sat in that damn office, watching the clock, assuming he would, at the very least, have the decency to take me home. But no, Kelvin Aldoracco was too much of a bastard for even that.My fingers curled into fists as I walked toward the nearest bus stop. The heels I wore pinched my feet, but I refused to let myself stumble. I wouldn't give him that satisfaction, even if he wasn't here to see it.The bus arrived with a hiss, and I stepped inside, dropping a few bills into the slot before finding a seat near the window.Maybe I should ask Katie how to hide a dead body. Not that I was planning anything. Yet.But the idea of stuffing Kelvin into a trunk and tossing him into the river had a certain poetic appeal. Maybe I’d start with his stupid, expensive ties. Strangle him with one just for the irony. The thought made me smirk
