Krystabel's POV
This was the same dream that haunted me, the same dream that reminded me of my past. It was the same dream, the same memory I had tried to bury, that I tried to hide but it all came back. Mostly in my subconscious. My phone binged and I picked it from my bedside table and looked at the text I received. It was from Lila, my best friend. She had moved to Paris years ago.
Lila: you awake
Me: yup, just woke up.
Me: Call you when I'm done taking my bath
Lila: cool
I went into the bathroom, took my bath, and headed to the kitchen to get food. I sighed when I realized there weren't any leftovers, so I had to settle for cereal considering my poor cooking skills. I loved cereal because it was easy to make. I didn't have to stand in the kitchen for an hour trying to cook up something for me to eat when I would just end up smelling like smoke at the end. So I was usually stuck with cereal or leftover takeout. Although I did know how to make sandwiches, I hardly did.
I dumped the plates into the sink while making a mental note to wash them later. I picked up my phone and dialed Lila's number, and she picked the fourth ring.
"Thought you wouldn't call back," Lila said over the phone
"Good day to you too"
"How's my favorite friend doing"
"Fine as always"I replied with a smile
"Without a doubt"I could hear her laughter in the background
"So I'm guessing you didn't just call to say hi"
"Just checking up on you, no big deal"
"I don't need you to check up on me, "I said feigning annoyance
"Well I do, so are you still coming to Paris"
"It's not like I have a choice"
"So that's a yes," she asked
"Obviously, "I said rolling my eyes at her silly question
"I can't wait to see you on Friday" she said excitedly
"Neither can I, "I said
"See you in Paris then, "I said
"See you there"
I dragged my traveling bag against the marble as I navigated my way through tons of people to get out of the arrival wing. Lila had told me that she would be waiting for me just outside the arrival wing but right now Lila was nowhere to be found.I walked further but I still couldn't find her. I wasn't looking where I was going when a woman yelled"Are you blind?"The woman snapped"Sorry but what did I do?"I asked confused"Your silly bag almost made my trip" That was it. She almost tripped and she was shouting as though a megaphone wouldn't be enough for her to yell. I didn't feel like getting into trouble on my first day in a foreign country so I decided to apologize. The woman eyeballed me and with a hiss, she left.
I was soaked from head to toe all thanks to the frustrating stranger I had met. I sighed. Today wasn't going as I planned. I looked around the house. Lila had good taste. She was an architect after all.I peeled my clothes off my body and took a bath to warm my cold body. The warmth of the bath took away my frustration and made me feel fresh. I brought out a chocolate bar from my purse and I began to eat it when I heard a knock on the door. I opened the door. It was Lila"How could you leave me all alone, what if I had gotten raped, kidnapped or worst case scenario killed?""Whoa, chill woman, and at least let me in"Lila shoved past me into the house."If you were killed" she started "You would have died and you'd probably come back to haunt me" She grabbed the for
The workers at the site seemed very nice and I had a pretty good time talking and getting to know them. Right now, I was carefully making one of my infamous sandwiches since I was hungry. After putting everything together, I had a mouth-watering dinner waiting to journey down my digestive system.I dimmed the lights a little, brought out wine, and gave the living room a candlelight dinner vibe. I smiled at myself. I was having a dinner date with a sandwich.I took a bite of the sandwich and man did it taste good. As I was savoring the taste of the piece in front of me, I heard a knock on the door and I groaned."Whoever it is, go away, "I told the person at the door."That is no way to treat your neighbors'' And just like that my dinner date was ruined. The f
"I thought you'd never arrive, "I told Lila as she sat on the couch"I had a busy day besides I would not for anything in the world miss movie night with you, "Lila said and I smiled"You don't have to, "I told her with genuine concern"If you can spend hours working without sleeping then I can probably stay a few more hours""You're not me, "I said quietly that I doubted if Lila heard me"I know," she said sweetly. "How about Legacies or Ginny and Georgia?" she asked after a moment of silence"Why not both?"I told her and took out my laptop from its usual place. I dimmed the lights to give the apartment the vibe of a movie theater."L
A knock on the door reminded me that I was still hungry. I tried sleeping to forget but nothing seemed to be working to tame my wild stomach. I hauled my hungry self off the couch and opened the door."What do you want?"I said to the frustrating person in front of me."What if I told you I brought food, would you let me in?"My hope was renewed. I dragged him by the collar inside my apartment."I'll take that as a yes, "He said as he gave me the plate"What's this?"I asked out of curiosity"Chicken fricassee. It's a Parisian dish.........""I don't need the history mister" I cut him off"You could be a little more grateful y
"You said you would hang out"I whined Lila had told me that she belonged to me and now she was backing out. It wasn't fair and she wasn't even giving me any reason why she wouldn't be able to spend the day with me. I had gone to the site earlier to kill boredom and I had looked forward to spending time with Lila but that plan was no more and the worst part of it was that I was going to die of boredom. Literally. "I said I'm sorry," she said "I'm still asking why" Her phone rang. "I'll have to answer this," she told me "Yh,yh pretend like we aren't having a conversation here," I said with irritation. I examined her as she spoke on the phone. She smiled then blushed, then there was more smiling and more blushing. "Is he the reason why you can't spend time with me?"I asked as soon as she went off the line "Who's he, what are you even talking about" she blushed "You're seriously going to play dumb right now,
His statement left me speechless. Why would he even think that...He smirked"Cats has gotten the pretty girl's tongue"Pretty. The word echoed in my head. Was he trying to play mind games with me?"If you brought me out here to play mind games then I'm afraid you'll have to take me back to my apartment," I said with folded arms.He laughed. His laughter was rich and like pleasant music to the ears."Krystabel Andez stop thinking about his laughter" I scolded myself internally"I don't play mind games hazel but if it will get you to stop hating me then I'll try" he smiled"Well we've been walking and we haven't gotten to our destination yet"I frownedHe walked and I followed. We got to a place with a wall built with vines. He shifted the Vines aside and I was disappointed. I had thought I would see something out of a Disney production but instead, I saw a circle with a star in the middle and a bench. How lovely is that?
"Join you to do what exactly?"I asked as soon as I raised my jaw.He laughed"Get your mind out the gutter," he said"We're going to be sleeping on the same bed not the other thing people do on the bed" he paused"Unless you feel like doing the other thing," he said with a sly smile"No, I would never. Why would I want to do the other thing with you? You have a girlfriend"A crazy girlfriend"Yeah, you're right," he said"So you accepting my offer or not"I shrugged"What have I got to lose?"I said and he led me inside his apartment. ♠♠♠I felt a hand tuck a strand of hair behind my ear and my eyes shot open immedi
Great, just great. You'd be surprised at the things you didn't know. Lila had said that. She knew, she knew that Ace liked me and she kept quiet. Who does that? Was that why she wanted me here? I groaned out in frustration. I hated my life right now. "Are you okay?" Etienné asked, standing in front of me. Why did he have to show up in front of me? "No. People suck. Lila sucks, Ace sucks and most of all, you suck Etienné. You suck more than everybody in this world" I told him, pointing a finger at his chest. Tears were rolling down my cheek. Why was I even crying? "I know "he replied solemnly. Of course, he did. My head felt woozy. I felt like I was being carried away by the wind. I needed to think clearly but here I was, high on alcohol. Alcohol sucks too. I laughed. I was crying and now laughing. I think I'm losing it already. "I'll take you home," Etienné told me as he attempted to get me off the bar stool. I pushed him away from me. "Listen…." I spoke with a slurry
Guess what? Yes, Lila and I are back together. We made amends over the week. I feel at ease with the St Clair case- mostly because I haven't seen him in a while but whatever. "Ace told me you're leaving," Lila said as she came out of the kitchen with a bowl of cereal in her hands. "I might, I might not. I'm still thinking about it" I responded. "Let me know when you make a decision," she said with a sigh "You don't seem happy about it. You're not going to talk me out of going?" I asked with a raised eyebrow. "My best friend is leaving and I'm supposed to be happy? Well, I'm not. Ace said I shouldn't try to talk you out of it, something about birds and not being meant for their cages" she replied flatly. "He told you that too?" "Did you understand?" Lila asked. I shook my head to say no and we both burst out into laughter. "Why did you start listening to Ace?" She shrugged and ate her cereal. Silence. "What's on your mind, Lila?"I queried when I noticed Lila frowning. "I
These last few weeks have been total hell for me. I lost a friend-we were more than friends-Krystabel. Meredith is pregnant with a baby I'm not ready for. My life just tipped into disaster. I sighed as I sat on a bench kicking stones. I wish everything could be normal, maybe if Krystabel didn't come to Paris…… Who was he kidding? He wouldn't trade meeting Krystabel for anything. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He brought it out and then answered the call. "We need to talk" she spoke over the line and hung up before I replied. I hated that phrase 'we need to talk'. Every time it was used, there was always bad news attached to it. My mum had told me we needed to talk, I found out she had cancer. Meredith had told me she needed to talk, I found out she was pregnant. I stood up from the bench and made my way to Krystabel's apartment. Was she pregnant? Is that why she called? I can't have two ladies with my baby at the same time. That would be….. I quickened my pace and got to her
I needed to apologize for what Lila had done. At least that's what I made myself believe. I blew out a breath and then knocked. The door opened. "You?" He looked confused. Like he didn't expect it to be me. I didn't blame him though. I wouldn't have expected it to be me either. I flushed. "Me, "I said "Oh, hi" he greeted. I shifted my weight from leg to leg. I didn't know how to start up this particular conversation. "Is there something you needed?" Etienné asked. "No. Actually, I came to apologize for what Lila did the……" I trailed off not knowing how to continue. He seemed relieved. What did he think I came here for? "No problem," he said with a tight smile. "You and Lila didn't seem to be on good
Chapter 32 I closed my laptop and let out a breath. I was done with sorting out work emails for today. My remaining plans for today included sleep and eating junk food. Nothing more. It was a near-perfect schedule. It would have been completely perfect if Lila hadn't come knocking at my door. "Hey" Lila greeted with balloons in her hands. I stood with my hands crossed against my chest, communicating to her that I wasn't letting her in. She seemed to understand because she nodded. "These are for you," she said, referring to the balloons. The balloons were red and five in number. Three of them had the words 'Happy birthday best friend' written on them and the remaining two had 'I am sorry' written on them. All in capital letters. I closed the door on her face, went to my bedroom to grab a pin then opened the door to face her. I shoved the pi
My head felt heavy and it hurt. I felt like bricks had been thrown at my head. I opened my eyes and blinked a few times so that my eyes could adjust to the lights that lit up the room. The smell of disinfectant wafted past my nose. I didn't like it, it made me want to puke. Only hospitals smelt strongly of disinfectant. I didn't die. I was in a hospital A monitor beeped, prompting me to tilt my head to see where the sound came from. There was a drip attached to my left arm. "Good morning Miss Andez" A doctor dressed in scrubs greeted me. I tried smiling but my face felt glued together so I stayed still instead. "How's your head?" the doctor asked. He picked a pen from his pocket and started writing something on his pad. "I'm going to need you to answer me Andez" I liked the way he pronounced my name. "
I would recognize that voice anywhere. Only he could make my body respond the way it did to his voice. My heart knew he didn't belong with me then why couldn't my body get the memo? I turned to face him. "Who comes to a carnival without money?" I asked him, concealing whatever inner battle my heart was fighting against my body. He smiled softly. "I didn't say I came without money. I asked if you mind buying for me" he told me. I scoffed and collected the cotton candies. "Same difference" I responded "Actually…." "Yes" I answered flatly "What?" He asked confused "Yes, I mind buying for you" I answered again. He laughed and I thought I'd faint right there. His laugh was throaty yet it sounded like melodious music to my ears. &nb
I was at the construction site mixing sand and gravel partly because I needed to get my lazy ass out of the confines of my apartment and it seemed like a good exercise to get Etienné out of my mind. My phone rang in my jeans pocket. I wiped my sweaty hands on the side of my jeans before picking up the call. "Where are you?" Ace asked me over the phone. "Well hello to you too" He laughed. "Forgive my lack of manners m'lady. Where art thou?" He asked, faking a British accent. I decided to play along. "At the construction site, indulging in hard manual labor" I replied, imitating his accent. "For real?" Ace asked, ditching the accent. "Yup. The workers here looked at me like I grew two heads in two seconds" I said with a chuckle. "I don't bla
For the past two days, I've been holed up in my apartment. I was either sulking or working, either way, it helped me steer clear of Etienné. An achievement I was proud of. I had switched off my phone to avoid any distractions while I worked. I booted my phone hoping Lila hadn't sent a search and find party because she couldn't reach me. Thinking about it, in some ways Lila was like an elder sister. She was protective of me. My phone finally came on. Lila and Ace had tried calling. Lila had texted him about how worried she was. I replied to her instantly, letting her know I was okay. I left a text for Ace asking him to come over if he could. Minutes later, he texted back to tell him he wouldn't and then scolded me for what he called my "Inconsiderate behavior" I hauled myself out of my couch and freshened up. I needed fresh air. Time to think and get ready for tomorrow. Tomorrow was my birthday. I should be happy, I
