I'm not exactly sure why I let my friends talk me into going to watch scary movies with them, but here I was. My friends would describe me as the biggest scaredy cat in the world, which is why scary movies always make me jumpy afterwards. My friends think it's hilarious to see me watch werewolf movies through my fingers, cowering away from the screen.
Leaving the movie theatre, a cold wind rushes through my hair, chilling me to the bone. I tried to pull my jacket tighter to my body, as if that would heat my tiny frame but it was no use. The cold evening air surrounded me, planting light kisses across my bare skin.
"Tell me again why I let you drag me to these stupid movies? You know movies with creatures freak me out," I said, annoyed staring at my best friends who clearly love to torture me.
"Because Riley, the movies you pick always suck," Page laughs, popping another piece of popcorn into her mouth.
"Yeah Riley, stop being such a scaredy cat. It's just a movie," Mia says, rolling her eyes.
"I hate you both, you know that?" I retort back to them.
"No. No, you don't. In fact, you love us. You know it's for your own good anyways. There's nothing to be scared of. It's not real!" Page says practically screaming at me in the parking lot.
"First of all, werewolves are terrifying. They have huge teeth, and scary claws. How can you not be scared of them?" I ask, genuinely concerned.
They both look at each other, exchanging mocking glances as they start to laugh.
"It's not my fault! Blame my brother for tormenting me when I was five," I said glumly. "Telling me that one was going to come steal me away when I turned 18."
"Oh Riley, it's okay. Some people just take longer to get over their fears," Mia pointed out.
"Maybe! So, my car is over there, and It's flipping freeeeezing out here. I'll catch you guys at school," I said, doing my best to change the subject.
"See ya!" Page yelled, getting into her own car. "Drive safe!"
Mia and Page have been my best friends since I was born, which is how we know each other so well. They make sure to torture me every chance I get, but I let them even if it's against my better judgement.
Walking to my car, I start mumbling to myself, "How could I let them force me to watch another werewolf movie? Now I'm going to be on edge all night."
Hearing a distant snicker made me realize that I wasn't mumbling as quietly as I had thought.
"Crap," I groaned, as I got into my beat-up car. I buried my face in my hands for a moment, trying not to die of embarrassment at someone hear me talk to myself.
"Note to self: Get a new car. Two: Get new friends. Three: Stop being afraid of things that aren't even real," I mutter inside my head, making sure that I don't talk out loud to further embarrass myself.
I get lost in my own thoughts as I start down the road. My phone let out a beep in my purse telling me that it has a very low battery. I was very forgetful when it came to my phone, never remembering to charge it. Especially in moments like this, where it could be helpful.
Instead of worrying about my dying phone, I turned the music up and sang along to the 80's rock songs that came on. After a couple of minutes and countless solos, I realize that I must have missed my turn as the houses aren't looking familiar anymore. I began to search the streets signs for a familiar name, but I came up empty handed, feeling panic start to settle in my stomach. It also looks like it's gotten a lot darker then when I left the movie theatre, turning my attention to the darkened street in front of me.
I started to rummage through my purse until I pull out my phone to see if I have enough battery life to get me home. Once I find it, I punched in my address looking back from road to phone hastily, hoping that it doesn't die.
Without warning, something fast jumped out in front of my car. A scream left my lips, as I slammed on the brakes hard hoping I didn't hit whatever thing decided it had a Deathwish.
My car came to a screeching halt as I squinted trying to see what jumped out in front of me.With no luck, I cautiously stepped out of my car to investigate. After opening the door and looking around a little a sigh of relief let my lips. There was nothing around my car, so whatever it was, was gone. I did not have the money to fix my car if I had actually hit something, so it must be my lucky night.
"Thank god," I think to myself. "I must just be imagining things."
"H-hello?" I yell, just in case, "Anyone out there?"
The forest that skimmed the barred-up house was eerily quiet, causing a chill to run down my spine. Climbing back into the car, I try to start the engine, but it won't budge. The lights came on, but nothing seemed to want to work.
"Great, this is just freakin great," I mumble, putting my head in my hands trying to figure out my next move. Looking around outside, there was nothing but houses with boarded up windows and what appeared to be an old school that has been forgotten about.
Looking down at my phone, I could tell that it was no use. It was dead, just like my beat-up car."Okay, no problem. I'll just have to find someone that can help me. Maybe I can flag down a car, or something." I grumble to myself. "Maybe I could find a store or something if I get back to the main road."
Something in my head was telling me not to leave the car, but I couldn't stay here stranded. I grabbed my purse, locked the doors and started down the road. The cool air nipped my skin, as
I walked faster. Crossing the street, I pulled my jacket tighter in a futile attempt to keep myself warm against the sharp cold that now chilled my bones once again. As I passed the school, I couldn't help but notice the broken windows, the dead ivy that lined the walls and the chipped mortar that surrounded the building. Something about it made me feel extremely uncomfortable, so I decided to walk faster."With my luck, this school would be haunted," I joked to myself, trying to shake my nerves. I picked up my pace, realizing just how cold it was. A little further down the road, a sudden crunch of fallen leaves took me from my thoughts, making my heartbeat faster.
I could see the outline of what looked like a couple, underneath a tree. I tried to rush past them, not wanting to interrupt their 'Private time'. As I was crossing the street, a guttural noise came from one of the people, followed by a sob.
"Why is she crying, does she need help?" I thought, adrenaline immediately filling my veins.
"Excuse me?" I yell over to them, "Is everything okay?"
I'm met with silence, as I approach them slowly. I get a glimpse of the woman's face, but she is just staring blankly as if she couldn't hear me. By the look on the woman’s face, I assumed she was either drugged, or unconscious which put an unsettling feeling in my stomach.
When they didn't answer, I stood frozen in place for a couple seconds. I yelled again with the same result.I stood silent in the street for a couple of moments, staring at this unusual couple until I could hear the woman let out a long moan. Dumbfounded, I walked towards the couple as I tried to piece together what exactly was happening with them. The man who she was with, stepped back in surprise as her mouth opens for another moan. She started staggering towards me, with what looks like blood trickling down her neck and chest.
She held out her hands as if she wanted me to take them, so I ran towards her.
"P-please help me," she stammered. I grasp onto her hands, and realize she is shaking so hard that her teeth are chattering together. Staring at this women in horror, I freeze in place. My legs feeling like cement, I couldn't help but fall backwards as she pushed my forward with such force. Crawling away from the woman, I claw against the ground, trying to get back to my feet and regain my composure.
I could hear a faint voice in my head telling me to go back to the woman and help her, but I ignored it and started walking back down the road as soon as I got to my feet.
I looked down at my hands and realized they had been scraped pretty badly from when she pushed me. Staring down at my hands, my foot caught in a deep pothole slamming my knees into the hard pavement. I let out a shriek as the pain surged up my ankle that I just twisted.
The sound of pounding feet behind me filled my ears, as I tried to get back to my feet. A hand landed on my shoulder, and with great force spun me around. His black eyes met my own, and
I just barely held back a scream. Stumbling back at the intensity of this brooding man, I couldn't help but get lippy."What the hell do you think you're doing?" I manage to get out, sounding confident even though all I wanted to do was crawl up into a ball and cry.
"Jenson?" a voice said from further away.
"Yes, Alpha?"
I hesitated at the realization that there was now two men, one of which I couldn't see."Are you getting yourself into trouble again?" the voice said, sounding closer this time. " Go back to your toy, Jenson."
The second man stepped towards me as the first man retreated. Even in the dark, I could tell this man was much taller then both me and the first guy. I stood at 5'2 on a good day, and this guy was well over 6 feet.
"Now what do we have here?" He said, grabbing a strand of my raven hair. I could hear him take a deep breathe in, as if savoring the cold air floating around us. Looking back up at him, I only noticed that he had the most startling pair of deep blue eyes that I have ever seen. I couldn't help but compare them to bright sapphires and I instantly hated myself for comparing this monster to something so beautiful.
Trying to back away slowly to separate myself from this threat, I stepped back a couple feet not daring to turn my back on him. Without thinking, I tried to run backwards, but my ankle was too injured, so I turned on my heels and tried to sprint away from this would-be-murderer.
Something hard hit the back of my head, with an obvious crack and I fell forward again, slamming my knees and forehead on the pavement for the second time tonight. I winced as the pain from my head and knees overwhelmed my senses and the metallic smell of my blood filled the air.
"Did I forget to tell you not to run?" the brooding man said, as if he was trying to make a joke to the person he just assaulted.
"You did, actually," I snapped back groggily. "Anything else you forget to tell me, jackass?
I know I was pushing my luck with saying something like that, but I couldn't help but feel like he was toying with me. Like I was some prey, and he was on a hunt. He walked over to me as I tried to make my way to my feet. I could hardly see in front of me, with the concussion I assumed I had. The tall figure stood in front of me, reaching out to grab my waist bringing me close to his body. I dizzily looked up to his face again, as I saw his eyes go black. His arms tightened around my waist, cutting off my oxygen making me even more lightheaded. His body gave off a warmth I have never felt before, which made me even more groggy.
"It'll be easier, if you stop fighting," he said gruffly next to my ear. I could feel his hot breath on my neck, and the thought of what could happen made me gag. With this strange man still holding onto my waist, my arms and legs went numb. My head started to feel too heavy to support as I let it roll back so I was looking at the night sky.
"That wasn't so hard, now was it little doll?" He whispered in my ear, as I faintly felt my feet lift off the ground. Falling in and out of consciousness as he was talking to me, but he was just too far away for me to make out the words. My vision finally narrowed to a pinpoint of light. The last thing I could see before blacking out completely was the blinding light of the full moon.
Blackness.
Hi everyone! Thank you so much for reading my first short novel! :) It really means a lot to me that you decided to read it! I am doing updates on the first 15 chapters, and then will begin to add a chapter here and there. I am currently working on the second part of my little series, and I can't wait to share it! Love ShakingMyShadows
Images started to flash in my mind, like a slideshow replaying the events of my night. I could hear a faint voice in the back of my head telling me to wake up, that I need to be awake to fully understand what was happening. Sapphire eyes, a bloody women, a creepy abandoned school, being hit over the head and falling in the arms of a menacing stranger. My eyes fluttered until realization set it. Frantically opening my eyes, I felt sick when I looked out the window and did not see anything I recognized. My head was throbbing as I tried to focus on any one thing passing through the window."Where am I? Why am I moving? Wait... Where are they taking me?" I thought as I looked in the front seat in horror. One of my kidnappers started talking, as I tried to focus on their faces. The driver had sleek blonde hair, with a softer voice but still sent a chill down my spine when he spoke. The passenger had curly hair, that looked as black as midnight. Since I was laying in the bac
As my eyes fluttered open, I could see the sunlight filtering through the nearby curtains.Turning my head, I noticed that there was an IV drip hooked up to my arm giving me some sort of clear liquid. I let out a small shriek as I noticed a pair of blue eyes staring at me. I tried to jump out of the bed, but she ran to me and pushed my shoulders back down into the fluffy pillows."If you don't stop moving, you're going to rip out the IV in your arm." Lauralie said with a laugh, still holding my shoulders down.A muscular man in a white coat came towards the bed, checking the IV in my arm making sure it was still intact."You're going to be all right, Ma'am." he gave with a chuckle, pointing his finger in my direction. "Just don't go around hitting your head anytime soon, please.""What day is it?" I choked out, trying to gather my thoughts."Oh, Riley. It is May 12th. You only slept through the night." He said reassuringly. "You're safe here."
Spending time with everyone the last few days has been both unexpected and suprising. I'm still afraid of werewolves, but since I haven't actually seen one yet, I can pretend that I'm just staying at some random persons house for awhile. Spending time with Alpha Declan, Jenson,Lauralie and the twins has made me realize that maybe we weren't so different."Up you go, sleep-head! I'm bored!" Lauralie chimed, trying to rolling me out of bed. "Why are you up so early? Aren't werewolves supposed to be nocuturnal or something? Howling at the full moon?" I grumble, pulling a pillow over my face."Riley, it's 8 am. It's not early, and Vampires are the nocturnal ones." She says as she pulls away the pillow. "Get up, I'll make you breakfast. I'm sure we can find something that I won't burn."I jump out of bed at the mention of Lauralie cooking. "No! It's fine! I can make my own breakfast, thanks." I say hasitily digging through my dressers. One thi
It has been a couple days since Declan asked me to give him a chance, but his words have not stopped replaying in my mind. I have been trying to wrap my brain around this new world I have been introduced to, but it all seems so fast. But he is your mate, a voice says in my head as if I made the thought myself."Great, now I'm hearing voices in my head. I really must be going crazy." I mumble.I do really want to give him a chance, maybe something good can come from it. He acts gruff on the outside, but there is so much there that no one gets to see other then me. Maybe we are the perfect fit. I push the thoughts aside, as my stomach began to grumble."Hey you! Are you coming to breakfast or what?" Declan says through my closed door."I'll be there in a minute! And my name is not "you"!" I yell back, more sarcastically than I wanted. He drives me crazy, and makes me forget my manners, but I could really see myself giving him a chance. I feel
On the way home, I could see that Declan was injured but he wouldn't let me look at his wounds saying that he would be healed by the time we got there. Once we got to the manor, Levi left saying that he didn't want to be around if they decided to attack again. The entire packhouse was called to a meeting about the incident. The news of Harlan finding out about me at the store and then attacking the Alpha spread around the town like wildfire."Are you out of your mind?" Oberan yelled at his son. His voice travelled through the entire house."I-It was my fault." I squeek, trying to take the heat off of Declan."I think that's the bravest thing you've ever done in your life," the voice says and I secretly agree with it.Declans father turns his angry eyes on me, and it's impossible not to shake with terror from his gaze. Although he isn't the Alpha anymore, it doesn't make him any less terrifying."Declan, you knew she would be in danger. She's
I let out a small moan, as I began to wake from my unconciousness. My eyes barely opened before I could see the concerned faces around the room staring at me. "I told you she would be okay!" Lauralie gawked excitedly as she saw my eyes flutter."Her neck is badly damaged from being choked, but she should make a full recovery in a few short hours," Jesse says, tilting my head up. He began to flash a light into my eyes, checking on the concussion that I was diagnosed with prior. "She heals fast. No sign of her concussion." he said, sounding shocked. "Are we sure she isn't a werewolf?" Declan clears his throat gestering to Jesse as they make there way out of the bedroom. I could hear them talk about something, saying half blood and mom, but it put too much strain on my pounding head to try and listen. Sitting up in the bed, I try to remember what exactly happened. A lot of it was a blur and I couldn't seem to remember why my throat hurts.
"How cute, you're talking to yourself," someone snapped me from my sleep. I've never seen this person before, and somehow they have gotten into my room. He had a menacing smile on his lips, walking towards me with a blade in his hands. "Wh-who are you?" I ask, my voice sounding hoarse. "I wouldn't worry about that if I were you, little lady." he says still coming closer. "I'm just someone who is interested in seeing the Alpha mates half-blood power." "H-how did you know about me being a half-blood?" I stammer."I have my ways," he says with a shrug, playing with the point of the blade."You mean, there's more then one of you?" I ask, sounding braver then I thought it would. He shakes his head, giving me a deep smile as if to belittle me. "You're not a very smart girl. I guess I thought you would be.. a little more, I don't know.. special?" he says, sounding dissapointed. "Now come here, so I can end this already."
My mother explained that her parents were both werewolves of a pack that doesn't exist anymore. There was a war between the rogues and her pack when she was a teenager, causing her and my grandparents to flee and live as rogues themselves. She actually never found her mate, and she just assumed he had died in the war which would explain how she survived on her own. She met my father, who she told the truth and he loved her just the same. My older brother knew about this, but since I had never talked about wolves or shifting or anything like that, they decided it wouldn't benefit me to not know, which I could understand.I just turned 18 and found my mate, so it only makes sense that my werewolf side has made itself known now, but they aren't sure if I will shift. 10 Years Later“Ready to go, Riley?” my father said. He looked into my eyes, as the smile on his face grew three sizes. I nodded slightly, not trusting my voice. I squeezed my eyes shut tightly and sucked in a deep breathe. The doors opened slowly and let me breathe out and opened my eyes. I looked around, seeing all the guests that lined the seats in the familiar garden.“You look like an angel,” my dad whispered, leaning over to kiss my forehead. The calm feeling that he gave me rushed through my entire body as the soft music began to play. He gave me one of his award-winning smiles, and I could not help but smile back. When I turned away from him, there he was.Although being a werewolf, we really did not need to get married since we were mates, but he thought that it would be a nice gesture since I was raised human. Even though it took us awhile, we decided that waiting for our daughter t
When I wake up, the sun had already set and the light was streaming in my room though the thin curtains. Declan actually stayed and I could see him lying perfectly still next to me. I stared at his face for awhile, letting the realization of the night settle in all over again."How do you feel," he asked, sleep still on his lips."I feel like I can't even begin to process what happened. I have only ever felt your emotions, but last night I felt his, and it was overwhelming," I say as tears start to fill my eyes."You can feel my emotions?" He asks, shocked."Yes, I have always been able to since I met you," I mutter."I see. That might be one of the benefits of being a White Wolf. Although I could hear your thoughts before the mind-link, some still slipped through. I'm not sure about the feelings though," he says wryly.I don't respond as he takes my hand and raises it to his cheek."Let's stay here for awhile," he says, pulling me cl
The week leading up to the ceremony seemed to fly by. The house was in a constant state of commotion trying to figure out the guest list, food, seating plan, guests of honor and everything in between. Since this was a very special event, Declan had arranged for Lauralie,Elsie and myself to go to the spa for the day leading up to the party. He said that he had extra protection placed throughout since my attack at the carnival, so it wouldn't be a problem."Don't worry, Dec! I'll keep her safe," Lauralie reassured him as we walked out the door. We pulled up to the spa, and 3 ladies came out dressed in white spa attire. Each lady grabbed one of us, and brought us into the spa leading us inside."Good morning, Luna Riley. My name is Anastasia, but you can call me Anna. I have been hired to doll you up this morning." She smiled sweetly taking my coat and handing me a robe and slippers. I slipped into them quickly, and then followed her down the hall into a r
My eyes fluttered open slowly as I took in the sights of the bedroom. The sun was shining through, making the room seem as bright as ever. 2 sets of eyes are on me and my face instantly flushed."You have really got to stop trying to get yourself killed, Riley," Elsie says, cupping my cheeks. "W-what happened?" I say weakly, bringing my hand up to my bandaged neck. "You were attacked. Luckily I think your wolf kept you alive," Lauralie responds, holding my hand."Where's Declan?" I ask, realizing that he wasn't in the room. He entered the room as if he had heard me, followed by Jesse hot on his trail. A worried look was brushed across both of their faces and I can tell something isn't right."Riley, there's something that we have to tell you," Jesse speaks. I sit up in my bed, trying to ready myself for more bad news. "You can't go back home. Maxine and Emmit's actions last night proves that you aren't safe outside of thes
It's been a few days since I had left the manor, trying to get back to normal but everything feels wrong. With everything that has happened, I have gotten the strange feeling that I no longer belong here. I wanted to take a couple days to myself so I could figure out what I want and it hasn't been very successful."It's because you belong with your mate," Aala growled, irritated. She's been very short with me the last few days since we left Declan, I assumed from the mate-bond. I could feel the bond course through my veins always, especially with his mark on my neck and it only made me ache to be with him again. "Okay, Riley. What gives? You've been walking around like a zombie the last couple of days." Page says to me. "Nothing, it's nothing." I say, tracing my fingers along the mark underneath my collar. "Did Declan break up with you?" She asked, looking at me skeptical."No, nothing like that. I'm just going through a lot right now."
"Is...is he dead?"It was supposed to be a fun night bowling with friends, but instead it's turned into a nightmare."Jenson? Jenson, are you okay?" Declan says, as he reached his bestfriends side. Jensons chest was still, and blood was still pouring out from the wound on his neck. "Pl..please ...help....me.."Jenson stutters, as blood started to pool in his mouth, dribbling down onto his cheeks. My hands instantly go towards his neck to try and stop the bleeding, immediately getting covered in blood. I held back a gag, as I put pressure on the wounds. "Declan!? We have to stop the bleeding," I yell at him, not sure if he even hears me, "Declan! If we don't do something, he's gunna die!" "His pulse is faint, he's not going to heal from this," Declan says, shaking his head in frustration.I've never seen Declan lose control, so we aren't going to start now."Give im some of my blood." I say grimly, not to thrill
I was woken up by soft kisses being trailed down my nose. My eyes staggered open, as I could smell Declans minty breathe surround me. "Wake up, sleepyhead," he whispered, trailing his kisses down my neck."But why?" I groan."You have school today, missy. No more ditching," he says between kisses.I let out a small groan as I pushed him off me. I get ready for school, as he headed downstairs to make breakfast. He drops me off at school, and I immediately caught up with Page."Where's your bodyguard?" Page joked, gesturing around at thin air."My what?" I ask, eyes widening at her joke."Well, usually Declan follows you in but today he's nowhere to be found. What's up?" she says sounding concerned."Tell her to mind her business," Aala groans in the back of my mind. "This human is insufferable."I let out a small giggle, and Page gives me a weird look at my sudden outburst. "He has his own life, some of w
