When we finally pull away, there’s a shared understanding in our eyes. We’re both on edge, and the danger is far from over, but for this brief moment, we’re just Luke and Cheryl—two people who have fought so hard to be together, finding solace in each other.

“I missed you,” I admit, my voice barely more than a whisper.
