Alpha Ryker and Evan exchanged shocked looks. In fact they were beyond shocked, they were terrified.
“Is this a prank, dad? Because it's not funny one bit. What do you mean by mate? She's my mate” Evan said.
“Do I look like the type to play pranks, especially on you? Somehow, this omega is my second chance mate” Ryker replied, the confusion clear in his voice.
My eyes kept moving across the both of them, I still couldn't believe what was happening or was I dreaming?
I have always wished for a mate but this? This was madness, it was just not right. What was the moon goddess thinking? I didn't know if I should be terrified or grossed out… or maybe it was both.
Having two mates was considered very rare in the werewolf community, I have only heard of one which was many years ago in books before I was born. It was a mateship between three powerful individuals that birthed the werewolf community and the balance of all creatures of the world.
That is why this mateship was incredibly strange, I was only an omega with no wolf and was at the bottom of the hierarchy, mate bonds with two alpha wolves was unheard of. The two mates being father and son made it a first in history.
I felt hopeless at this new discovery, it would definitely take time getting used to it and with the look on the men's faces, I knew it would be almost a miracle.
“But… How is that possible? I can't believe this” Evan asked, directing his gaze back to me.
“Who are you and why have I never seen you in this house?” Alpha Ryker questioned suspiciously.
I bowed my head slightly as I answered “I…I am Marcelline, I just joined in as a maid”.
The distance between an omega and an alpha is far too big that it is considered disrespectful to be in their presence without permission. Omega were deeply scorned by the other wolves and are bound to a life of labor mostly as slaves, maids or breeders. I could tell at one glance that they didn't like my arrival.
“A maid, an omega is my mate?” Evan chuckled and scoffed, “This has to be a joke” he added.
“You can take her, I am not interested in a second chance mate and definitely not with my son” Ryker said, rejecting me on the spot as well.
Their words cut through me, I felt unwanted…the opposite feeling of finding your mate. I was expecting a rejection but still felt hurt when it came. Was the moon goddess trying to mock me by pairing such a match, what did I ever do to her?
With the two men staring down at me, I finally got my legs to work and I turned to run away. There was no use standing there and everything was still too overwhelming for me.
I barely got past two steps when I felt a sharp pain tear me up from within, I let out a scream and fell down. I couldn't describe the pain, I have never felt anything like it. I broke out in a sweat and I began feeling hot inside and freezing cold outside.
Alpha Ryker and Evan appeared at my side in an instant but they kept their distance as if the mate bond couldn't let them ignore me in pain.
“What the hell is wrong with her?” Evan asked as I crouched on the ground shivering and teeth clattering.
“... She's shifting” Ryker answered with a tone of realization and shock.
I was shocked to my bones at his words, was I really shifting?
Omegas were born without wolves hence shifting doesn't exist in their lifetime. I was an omega without a wolf for 20 years and I was shockingly shifting now?
Today was officially the strangest day of my life.
“That’s impossible, how can she shift when she is an omega?” I heard Evan ask.
“How would I know either? Aren't we both seeing it together?” Ryker retorted.
“But you are the almighty know-it-all Alpha, you are supposed to these things” Evan countered in a sarcastic voice.
“Oh don't you sass me young man, I am your father and Alpha” Ryker replied, getting pissed off.
“Yeah, I know. You have mentioned it a million times already” Evan tone increased with even more sarcasm.
Their endless bickering seemed to trigger another round of attack, searing pain tore through my body and I let out another scream.
“We need to help her or she won't survive her first shift” I heard Ryker say. My eyes were closed and my hair mated to my head due to sweat. Opening my eyes or even listening to conversation looked painful so I just laid there whimpering till I felt myself being picked up.
I did not know who was carrying me but whichever of the men it was, their touch soothed the pain surprisingly. I found myself clutching onto them even though I was being carried bridal style.
After a few minutes, I felt myself being lowered into a bathtub when my legs broke. I cried out in pain and curled up from the excruciating feeling, I knew that the first shift entailed bone reformation but I never knew it would hurt so bad.
“You are going to have to relax, breathe in and out slowly and embrace your inner wolf” I said Alpha Ryker's voice beside me as he held my hands tightly. I never thought I would say this but his presence helped me keep sane, both their presence calmed me down.
I did as I was told, breathing in and out and trying to embrace the wolf inside me.
“Marcelline, it's me… your wolf” I heard a voice inside my head… It was my wolf. I lived with wolves ever since I was born so I was very familiar with the shifting process.
“It hurts so much, make it stop” I could only beg at that point, I didn't think I would be able to stay alive if it continued.
“No, Marcy, we can't stop now. I have been forcefully dormant for too long but that's a topic for another time. You will have to grit your teeth and get through this, I'm here to help you through, our handsome mates are here too” the voice was almost like mine but it seemed more experienced and refined. If not for the shifting process, I would have been bursting with happiness about actually having a wolf when I thought I was going to live without one forever.
The next wave came and I started to feel burning hot outside, my skin felt like it was being pricked by a million needles. At first I didn't want to take my clothes off because of the men in the room but when the feeling intensified a few seconds later, I found myself tearing my clothes off of me.
I heard a low growl after I became stark naked but my eyes were sealed shut to know who it was and I had much bigger problems at the moment.
“Fill the tub with cold water” Ryker instructed Evan with a low tone like it was harder to speak and Evan only grunted stiffly and did as instructed.
Was my nakedness affecting them?
I didn't have the time to think about it when my hands broke, followed by my back and stomach… then my chest caved in too.
It happened so fast that I began sobbing with no strength to scream, I felt lightheaded and sleep kept pulling at me.
“Don’t sleep yet, my darling. I promise it's almost over, one last one okay?” my wolf said in a soothing voice.
“Okay” I replied and braced myself.
My head caved in…
Wolf ears, snout, canines, fur… they all came out in their full glory.
It was then I opened my eyes to see myself in the pool of my own blood mixed with water and my mates standing by the two sides of the tub. I thought I saw pride in their eyes but it disappeared in a second.
I was so tired that Ryker had to help me out of the tub and Evan wrapped a towel on me.
Wow, such a dream! I actually have a wolf now, I never expected it.
“Wolf, I'm going to call you Celline. I'll be Marcy and you'll be Celline” I said in a tired and excited voice as I admired my red fur in front of the mirror.
“Celline...I like it” she yipped and I smiled.
“I thought I was an omega with no wolf, how is this really happening?” My expression turned serious as I asked Celline the question that has been on my mind from the onset.
“Oh dear, I do not remember much but I know I was locked up to remain dormant in you by a powerful spell” she answered.
“Like a witch's spell? How is that possible when witches have been extinct for years?” I asked in further confusion.
“I don't really know either but my guess is that the spell was casted to keep me dormant as if I was never there, and only to be broken when we find our mates which we did” she replied in a calculating tone.
“A spell to break when I find my mate? It sounds unbelievable because I am no one special to be worth such complexity and stress” I countered. I don't know about witches but a spell capable of locking up an inner wolf sounded powerful and why would such be casted on me?
“Don’t be so quick to conclude that having two mates with blood relationship is proof that you are anything but normal. I only wonder why such drastic measures were taken by the witch who did this. We will have to dig for the truth ourselves and find out who we truly are” she said in a serious tone that had me thinking about her words.
Something told me this was far from simple.
“Now now, shifting is over but you need to sleep to recover your energy, we'll discuss more after you rest. Go to sleep child” she soothed.
At her words, I began to feel how truly tired I was. My eyes dropped low and felt heavy, all my joints sour and weakened. I slumped to the ground unable to hold my weight, I wanted to ask Celline how she was able to influence me with her words but my mouth was as heavy as bricks.
“Marcelline! Omega!” I could hear the distant voices of my mates calling out to me as I embraced the much needed sleep.
My story was about to change… or perhaps it already has.
***
Loud cheers from outside woke me up. I couldn't tell how long I slept but I woke up feeling very refreshed and new.
I was surprised to wake up in the maids quarters, my mates must have brought me here, I wondered what they said happened to me and what our unique relationship was.
There was no one in, everywhere was strangely quiet except for the noise outside. Was something happening over there?
I quickly got up from my bunk bed and walked out of the room, I only just came out when I saw Martha rounding a corner in a hurry.
“Hey, Martha! Wait!” I called out to her with a loud voice.
She immediately retraced her steps and her eyes lit up when she saw me, “Thank the goddess you are awake. How are you feeling? When the guard brought you here that you fainted while working, I was very worried”
“Oh… I'm totally fine now, it was probably because I was feeling overwhelmed . By the way, where is everyone?” I asked. I pushed aside the hurt feeling at the thought that my mates didn't bring me themselves.
“They are all outside, I was heading there too, you should come with…” she said impatiently and excitedly. Whatever was outside must be golden to have everyone pumped up like this.
“I don't understand, what is happening there?” I asked the question that has been on my mind.
“Alpha Ryker and Soon-to-be Alpha Evan are fighting in a life and death duel for the Alpha position” she answered.
Oh no!
“What?!” I exclaimed in shock and began rushing down myself.“Marcy, come on, wait for me!” I heard Martha call out to me from behind as she tried to keep up with me. She didn't know why I was this anxious, I couldn't let my mates fight and kill each other.Outside was crowded, the entire pack was watching the duel. Once I got there, I struggled to get past the people watching, I could hear their conversations as I walked by. “Who do you think is going to win the duel, Alpha Ryker or Evan?”“Hmm, I stand with Alpha Ryker. He is more experienced in fighting and when it comes to leading the pack, I think he is doing a good job so far”“I disagree. Evan is a prodigy in combat hence his title as commander in chief to the pack's army. Through his current position, we can all see his leadership skills aren't lacking either. He deserves a chance as alpha, Alpha Ryker can't rule forever”…The arguments continued heatedly among the audience, I didn't care about who was alpha or not, all I wa
Celline growled fiercely within me and began struggling to come forward. I had to grip a chair to balance myself and push her back.“What is it, Celline? Talk to me, what is going on?” I asked in confusion.“These two people hurt us, I watched them hurt you and I couldn't do anything about it but now I can. Let me take them on Marcy, I will tear them to shreds” she barked out.I pushed her back with every willpower in me, “I understand your anger but no, they are still family and I don't want to kill anyone” I explained, it took a while before Celline finally calmed down.Meanwhile Alpha Ryker and Evan turned to look at the guests. “Council elder Levi and his wife, what are you doing here?” Ryker asked.“Greetings Alpha Ryker, I know this is a sensitive time to come around but as it is, this matter concerns me because Marcelline here is my late wife's sister's daughter” Levi said in a cool voice that irritated me and my wolf.“Oh, is that so? I didn't know. Either way, this matter co
Ryker looked down at me with a mixture of surprise and pity in his eyes. He knew the kind of danger I was facing and the fear in my heart was palpable. “Marcelline, you don't have to do this. You are not a slave, you are a wolf and you deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. You are not going back to that house, I promise you that” Ryker said firmly.I couldn't believe what I was hearing, the Alpha was going to protect me? I never thought I would find someone who would stand up for me and defend me against my own family. “Thank you, Alpha Ryker. I am forever grateful for your kindness and generosity. I will do my best to serve you in any way I can” I said with tears still streaming down my face.Ryker helped me up and turned to face Uncle Levi and Aunty Rena, who were watching the scene unfold in shock. “Marcelline has made her choice and I support it. She stays here in the alpha house under my protection. Any objections?” Ryker asked, his tone challenging.Uncle Levi and A
The room was dead silent. I knelt on the cold marble floor, my hands trembling as I clasped them together. The words I’d just spoken hung in the air like a suffocating fog.I gulped waiting for a verdict but got no reply. I didn't know what to do or say. So I repeated. “I offer myself as your slave. Please, let me stay. I’ll do whatever you want.”Alpha Ryker’s piercing blue eyes narrowed, his jaw tightening as he processed my desperate plea. Evan leaned casually against the wall, arms crossed, a mocking smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He looked like he was enjoying the show.“A slave?” Ryker’s voice was low and controlled, but the edge in it made me flinch. “You’d willingly reduce yourself to that?”I swallowed hard. “Yes, Alpha.”Besides what was I before? A slave used and used until I was nothing but a broken shell.Ryker’s gaze bore into me, his silence more terrifying than any words. Finally, he stood, his towering frame casting a long shadow over me.“Get up,” he sa
The clang of pots and pans echoed through the vast kitchen as I scrubbed another grimy pan. My hands were raw, my fingers pruny from the endless washing. The scent of soap and grease clung to me like a second skin.“Move faster, omega,” Beatrice snapped, her sharp voice cutting through the kitchen’s noise.“Yes, Beatrice,” I murmured, keeping my head down. The other maids snickered, their laughter mixing with the sound of sizzling food and clattering dishes. I kept my mouth shut, focusing on the task before me. I couldn’t afford to draw more attention.“You missed a spot,” one of the younger maids, Clara, said smugly, pointing to a barely visible stain on a pan.I bit my tongue, scrubbing harder.“Pathetic,” she muttered as she walked past, bumping my shoulder.I stumbled slightly but steadied myself, refusing to react.“She’s like a ghost,” Clara said loudly to the others. “Doesn’t talk, doesn’t fight back. Maybe that’s why her mates don’t want her. Weak and useless.”“Even the slits
I stumbled back to the kitchen, my mind racing. The confrontation with Ryker felt surreal, an unexpected clash of emotions swirling together—fear, anger, adrenaline. The taste of defiance lingered on my tongue, but so did the bitter reminder of my punishment. The kitchen was eerily quiet as I entered, the other maids whispering among themselves. Their eyes followed me, wide with curiosity and perhaps a hint of fear. Clara spoke first, her expression somewhere between smug and shocked. “So, how did it go?” I didn’t respond, instead heading straight to the far side of the room, grabbing the nearest sponge and getting lost in the rhythm of washing dishes. My hands moved automatically, though my mind was still at Ryker’s desk, replaying the moments of anger, the proximity that had felt both threatening and intoxicating. “Bet you got a real telling-off,” Clara continued, her voice dripping with faux sweetness. “What did Alpha say? Did he give you a good scare?” The other maids giggled,
The day waned, and the last glimmers of sunlight filtered through the grimy kitchen windows, casting a melancholic glow over the clutter. Each tick of the clock seemed to emphasize the weight of my thoughts as I finished up the last of the dishes. The chatter from the other maids dwindled, replaced by the sound of forks clattering against plates and whispered snippets about the wedding.“Can you believe the Alpha’s actually allowing a pack wedding during Harvest Moon?” Clara was saying, her voice bubbling with disdain. “A real show of leadership, huh? But of course, we’re all just supposed to play our roles like good little servants.”“Better than sitting around twiddling our thumbs at home,” Beatrice snapped back, but even she seemed to struggle with the excitement and dread that loomed over the impending event. As I finished, I wiped my hands on my apron and caught Clara's eye from across the room. There was a challenge lurking behind her gaze, a flicker of rivalry that made my stom
I scrubbed, and I scrubbed, my hands raw and blistered. The stone floors of the east wing seemed endless, stretching out in cruel defiance of my aching limbs. Each stroke of the brush felt like a punishment in itself, a reminder of Ryker’s cold, unyielding glare as he handed down my sentence. My stomach growled angrily, a sharp pain twisting in my gut. Two days without food. Two days of this relentless, back-breaking work. My vision swam, and I had to pause, bracing myself against the floor to keep from collapsing.“Curse him,” I muttered under my breath, my voice hoarse. “Alpha Ryker, may your pillow be forever lumpy, and your soup always cold.”I resumed scrubbing, though my movements were sluggish. “May your boots always squeak, and may you step in every puddle on the way to every council meeting,” I grumbled. The words tasted bitter, but they were my only comfort as I worked through the pain and exhaustion. My fingers slipped on the wet stone, and I nearly fell forward. I caught
Their words sent a jolt through me. Playing the victim? What was right under my nose? My pulse quickened as I pressed harder against the door, trying to catch every word. The conversation was laced with a tension that hinted at something deeper than petty gossip.“We need to move quickly,” Clara said after a moment of silence. “If the Elder keeps poking around, it’s only a matter of time before he puts the pieces together.”Elder? Were they talking about Solas? My heart sank. What could they possibly be involved in that connected to him—and, by extension, to me?Martha sighed. “I know. But if we rush, we’ll make mistakes, and mistakes mean exposure. We’ve waited this long; a few more days won’t hurt.”Clara wasn’t convinced. “We’re running out of time. If she remembers anything—if she finds out what really happened—”“We’ll handle it,” Martha interrupted, her voice sharp with finality. “Just stick to the plan.”I stepped back from the door, my mind racing. What were they talking about
I was giggling to myself as I rushed to get some drinks. The festival had done something strange to me, lifted a weight I hadn’t realized I’d been carrying. For the first time in what felt like forever, I felt light. Even the lingering tension between Ryker and Evan had faded from my thoughts as I wove through the bustling crowd.Grabbing two mugs of cider from a nearby stall, I turned to head back when I nearly collided with someone.“Oh, I’m sorry—” I began, stopping short as I looked up.The man before me was older, his face lined with deep wrinkles that spoke of years of wisdom and hardship. His sharp, amber eyes seemed to pierce straight through me, and a long, silver beard framed his weathered face.“Marcelline,” he said softly, his voice gravelly yet calm.I blinked, the sound of my name from his lips catching me off guard. “Do I know you?”He gave a small, knowing smile. “Not directly. But I knew your parents.”The world around me seemed to slow, the sounds of the festival fadi
The pack festival was a grand affair, transforming the normally quiet grounds into a bustling scene of celebration. Lanterns hung from trees, casting a warm golden glow over the crowd. The scent of roasted meat and spiced cider filled the air, and laughter echoed from every corner.I walked cautiously through the festival, Martha at my side, her excitement palpable.“Isn’t this amazing?” she said, her eyes sparkling as she took in the sights. “It’s like the whole pack has forgotten their troubles for one night.”“Not everyone,” I murmured, noticing the occasional scowl or whispered comment directed my way.Martha looped her arm through mine. “Ignore them, Marcy. Tonight, you’re here to have fun.”Easier said than done. I tried to focus on the lively music and the colorful stalls, but the weight of the pack’s disapproval clung to me like a shadow. As we passed a group of warriors gathered around a large bonfire, I spotted Ryker and Evan standing off to the side, deep in conversation. R
I chuckled, the sound bubbling up through the heaviness of my earlier emotions. “I’ll do my best,” I replied, feeling a surge of warmth at his words.“Good.” Evan flashed me a grin before continuing on his way. I watched him go, feeling a strange combination of gratitude and confusion swirling within me. Despite the chaos in my mind, something about our conversation had kindled a flickering flame of resolve deep inside.I took a deep breath and glanced down the staircase, feeling the enormous weight of the Alpha house pressing in on me. But if I could just learn to stand tall—like Evan suggested—maybe I could become a little stronger, a little more confident. With renewed determination, I made my way back down the steps and into the kitchen. The maids were still busy with their chores, casting occasional glances in my direction. This time, however, I held my head high, refusing to let their whispers pierce through the wall I was slowly building around myself.I began to sort through t
The sun hung low in the sky as Martha and I made our way toward the bustling market at the edge of the pack’s territory. The scent of freshly baked bread, ripe fruits, and roasted meat wafted through the air, mingling with the murmur of voices and the occasional bark of a merchant hawking their wares.Martha, walking beside me, nudged my shoulder playfully. “So, what’s the deal with you and Evan?”I blinked, caught off guard. “What do you mean?”She grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Oh, come on, Marcy. You’ve been spending all that time training with him, and you’re telling me nothing’s going on?”I felt my cheeks heat up, and I glanced away, trying to hide my smile. “There’s nothing going on. He’s just... helping me with my wolf.”Martha giggled, leaning in closer. “Helping you? Is that what they call it now?”I groaned, but I couldn’t stop the laugh that bubbled up. “You’re ridiculous.”“And you’re blushing,” she teased.“I am not!”She raised an eyebrow. “Oh, please. You’
I looked at Evan, whose face suddenly changed. Then he said, “Your wolf. It’s... rare.”I frowned, confusion prickling at my skin. “I... I don’t understand. It comes and goes. I’m an omega, and it looks the same as everyone else’s.”Evan let out a low chuckle, shaking his head. “No, Marcy. It’s not the same. I’ve seen hundreds of wolves shift, and yours? It’s different. Stronger.”I crossed my arms, uneasy under his scrutiny. “If it’s so strong, why can’t I control it? Why does it feel like I’m fighting with a stranger every time it shows up?”Evan’s smirk returned, though there was something more serious beneath it. “Because you don’t know how to listen.”“Listen?” I scoffed. “It’s a wolf, Evan, not a person.”“Shows how much you know,” he said, stepping closer. “Your wolf isn’t just some beast inside you. It’s a part of you. And until you stop treating it like a problem, you’ll never get anywhere.”I opened my mouth to argue, but he held up a hand.“Save it,” he said. “You want to g
I raised an eyebrow, skeptical of his intentions. “An offer? What kind of ‘offer’ could you possibly have for me?”Evan leaned in slightly, his expression shifting from playful to serious. “I Can help you gain some leverage over Clara and the other maids, but I need something from you in return.”“And what would that be?” I asked, my curiosity piqued despite my better judgment. He straightened up and crossed his arms again, adopting a mockingly casual tone. “You’ll have to let me teach you how to hold your own against them. Let me coach you on how to stand up for yourself, how to not let them walk all over you.”I contemplated his offer. On one hand, I felt exhausted from the constant bullying and was tired of being treated like a doormat. On the other hand, trusting Evan seemed like a risk—he had an air of unpredictability that made me uneasy.“What’s in it for you?” I asked, not ready to commit to anything just yet.He chuckled lightly, the amusement still lingering in his eyes. “Ho
It wasn't going to be a beautiful day. I didn't need to understand science to know that the moment I had to deal with other maids that morning. My day would be the worse. The maids' quarters were a hub of whispered conversations and quiet giggles as I entered the kitchen early in the morning. My task list had already been posted on the wall: scrubbing pots, dusting the grand hall, and tending to the laundry.“Good morning, Marcy,” Clara greeted with a saccharine tone, her smirk barely hidden.I didn’t reply. I’d learned that nothing good ever came from responding to her.“Did you sleep well, omega?” she continued, her voice louder now, drawing the attention of the other maids. “Or did your mates keep you up?”The room erupted in stifled laughter. I gritted my teeth and focused on tying my apron.“Don’t ignore me,” Clara snapped, stepping in front of me. “You think you’re better than us because you’ve got two Alphas wrapped around your finger?”“I’m just here to work,” I said quietly
