ANDREW

When I burst through the hospital doors with Lyra the whole place seemed to erupt into chaos. She is taken from my arms and placed in a trauma room. There are so many doctors and nurses bustling around her that I have no choice but to sit to the side and watch helplessly as they try to revive my mate. Just like James, she is connected to every line and a tube that they can fit onto her body. I watch silently as a female nurse wipes the ash from her body. Even though they are speaking quietly to one another I can still hear the murmurs of concern in all of their voices.

Once the doctors are sure that she is stable they cover her with a sheet and wheel her into her own room. I follow behind, staring at the ground. I do not dare meet anyone’s eyes. I do not want to see their pity, just as I do not want them to see my shame. Both of my mates are dying in rooms next to one another and I did nothing to protect them. Nothing I did was enough. I do not deserve th

LYRA My left hand feels restless. There is a constant warmth and tingle that sends sparks throughout my whole body. The feeling is not foreign, but I cannot seem to place where I have felt the sparks before. As soothing as the warmth and the tingles are, my fingers are begging to move. Twitching my fingers one at a time, I groan at the stiffness of my knuckles. Each movement is accompanied by a dull, throbbing ache. As I move each finger, the warmth tightens around my hand making it harder to move. “Lyra,” a voice calls through the fog that is clouding my mind. “Lyra, are you awake?”I struggle to open my eyes against the blinding light that surrounds me. My eye lashes feel as if they are glued shut. I try to raise my hands to help clear my eyes, but they are heavy at my side. Turning my head away from the light I force my eyes open. The world around me is foggy, like it is covered in a mist. Blinking my eyes repeatedly, I try to clear

  • Fated to the Enemy   Chapter 54

LYRAFor two weeks I have been stuck in this hospital bed and I am starting to get restless. The nurses are kind enough to let me walk along the halls several times a day to keep me sane. But it is not enough. River’s constant howling for her mates inside of my mind is driving me insane. Andrew only comes to visit once a day, claiming that he needs to get back to attending to the pack’s business, but we both know that it is a lie. Since the day I woke up, he has become more and more distant. Trying to block his mind from my own. It is almost as if he is afraid of me and what I am capable of. I knew that I had caused massive destruction to the cave in my attempt to escape but I had passed out before I could see the extent of the mess I created. I tried to ask Andrew the first couple of times he visited what he found but he always changed the subject. Then there was James. His body was improving physically but he still has not woken. The breathing tu

ANDREW Silently I listen to Lyra as she explains that she wants to travel back into the darkness to find James. She believes that something is holding him there and that is why he is unable to wake. Confidence fills the room as she speaks about her plan. I do not know if she is doing it on purpose to get me to agree, or if she is just that sure of herself. Once she is done explaining she sits quietly with her small hands placed in her lap, waiting for me to respond. “Let me get this straight. You want me to allow you to travel into a place that you call ‘the void.’ A place that you describe as the darkness between this life and the afterlife, while you are pregnant, to retrieve our mate.” I repeat her plan to her. Nodding in agreement she places her hand on my own. “I will not physically be going. Just my mind,” she adds, like it makes the situation more comfortable for me. “What if you do not return? What if you end up like him for the rest of your

ANDREWSilently and helplessly I watch as Lyra goes limp beside James. I do not dare move her for fear of breaking the link that she is trying to create with James. Her arms fall limply from James’s temples and her head falls on his shoulder. If I did not know better it would appear that they had fallen asleep together. I wait for the rush of jealousy that I used to feel when they would get close, but it does not come. Them laying together feels right. Lyra is right, without James we are not complete. The longer she stays in the void the farther she feels from me. Brax begs for me to call for her through the bond, but I refuse. Pushing him to the back of my mind, I keep my focus on the pair in front of me. A rush of cold pulses through my heart, just as tears fall from Lyra’s eyes. Soft sobs escape her mouth as she lays sleeping next to James. I try to hide my fear for what she is going through but I know that something has gone wrong.“You ca

  • Fated to the Enemy   Chapter 57

LYRA It has been two weeks since James woke up. Two weeks since I traveled into the void and realized just how dark his mind had become. To be completely honest I am worried that he will never be the same. He is broken, I just pray that it is not beyond repair.I would be lying if I said that the memories of the void did not make their way into my mind every day. They sneak up on me during my most quiet hours of the day. The dark, slimy tendrils entangle themselves within my mind, trying to remind me that I am not worthy of love or my position as Luna. Sometimes the memories of the darkness are overwhelming, and it is all I can do to stay afloat. Other times they are just an annoying prickling reminder that my life is not really what I think it is. If the void affects me after only being in there for a day, I cannot imagine what plagues James. Since coming home, James refuses to sleep in his room or join our bed. He spends his nights pacing the hallways and mu

JAMES When Lyra’s vision floods my mind, it is as my body is moving on its own. Like it is a destined path that I have to willingly follow. I look down at the tiny baby in my arms. He is the perfect blend between Lyra and me. As his stunning blue eyes look up at me, all of the darkness let from the void disappears from my mind. The vision disappears from my mind and Lyra is standing in front of me with tears streaming down her face. I take a moment to take in the vision of the woman standing in front of me. It is like I am seeing her for the first time in months. Lyra is standing in front of me with all of her clothes on, holding both of my hands. I can see the need in her eyes as we look at one another. Dropping her hands I grab her face in my hands as I press my lips to hers. At first the kiss is greedy, both of us grasping at one another’s shoulders trying to pull each other closer. I peel the wet shirt from her body revealing the lacy black bra that is hi

  • Fated to the Enemy   Chapter 59

LYRA As I step through the library doors, I inhale deeply, the musty smell of old books is one of my favorite things. The she-wolf behind the desk offers me a fake smile as I pass her desk and make my way to the computers in the center of the library. Taking a seat at the only free computer, I make the mistake of glancing back and the front desk and the woman behind it is glaring at me. A shutter travels up my spine as I try not to think about which one of my mates she may have been involved with before I came along.I stare at the search bar on the library computer, and I wonder if the searches are tracked. I scan my card with the reader and type ‘witches’ into the search engine. I watch as the little blue circle in the center of the screen circles around and around, before only one book shows up on the screen. It is a children’s fictional book call The Werewolf and the Witch, and it is checked out. I blow out a deep breath and tap my long nails on

JAMESLyra and Andrew both turn to me with stunned expressions. “What? I used to be a kid once,” I say, frankly a little offended. “Can you remember enough of the story to tell me?” Lyra asks and I notice that the flames burning around her fists are starting to simmer out. Andrew scoffs at her request. “How is a children’s story going to be informative?”Just then Lyra’s hands burst back into flames and Andrew raises his hands and backs away from her slowly. Grabbing her hand, I ignore the flames that are burning my skin. I lead her to the couch and gesture for her to sit down. Propping several pillows behind her, I pull her feet on my lap, and begin to massage them before I start the story. Andrew is glaring at me from the kitchen, and I stick my tongue out at him in defiance. “Once upon a time,” I begin before Andrew interrupts. “Can you just give the short details?&rdqu

Erebus “I only turn twenty-one once,” Lucian whines behind me. Refusing to turn around I just respond to him with a growl. “You promised,” he adds in. Spinning around in my chair, his blue eyes are sparkling with fake tears and his lower lip is pushed out. “That does not work on me anymore,” I growl at him even though I feel my restraint begin to dissolve. “What will people think if they see their King out drinking at a bar?” “Ugh,” Lucian groans, throwing his neck back in frustration. “When did you turn into our mom?” Anger fills my body at being compared to her. I open my mouth to rebuke his comparison when I see his eyes flicker with amusement and a grin crosses his lips. “Where are we going,” I growl. His bright blue eyes glitter with excitement, “It’s a place called The Wolf’s Den.” “That place is a shithole,” I groan. Lucian is practically jumping up and down. “So you’ve heard of it?” “Can we pick a nicer location?” I rub my eyes roughly with palms of my hands

ELLA Checking my reflection in the mirror, I turn from side to side making sure that none of my ‘important parts’ are hanging out, as Gramps Walter likes to say. Carefully I check my makeup, avoiding my own emerald gaze in the mirror. Since I ran from my family in the Appalachian Mountains I haven’t been able to look myself in the eyes. These are the same eyes that belong to one of my fathers. A constant reminder that I am not the daughter they planned for me to be. My birth was foreseen, my powers were foreseen, and yet here I stand an ordinary werewolf. The color of my wolf’s fur should have been enough to serve as passage into the magical world of witches. But unlike any Silver Wolf that has come before me I am powerless. Practicing a fake smile for the mirror I don’t miss how my smile no longer meets my eyes, but lucky for me the bar patrons are always too drunk to notice or even care. I chuckle a little bit at my reflection, Gramps is going to throw a fit tonight. I h

  • Fated to the Enemy   Epilogue

LYRASixteen Years Later I watch as my daughter stares out of the window. The thick layer of snow that coats the ground reminds me of the night she was born. There was so much snow that even Andrew’s Jeep could not make it through the snow. I laugh a little at the irony of it all. Here I am largely pregnant, with swollen ankles, and my feet propped up on a pillow. It is the exact thing that I refused to do a little more than sixteen years ago. The look on my daughter’s face is one of worry and regret. I pat the couch beckoning her to come and sit with me. Leaning in I whisper quietly so no one care hear me. “She’s awake. Isn’t she?” I ask referring to her wolf. My question causes anxiety to ripple off her in waves. Hiding her face in her hands she tries to control her breathing. We already know she is a Silver Wolf. We have prepared for this day since she was old enough to understand. I have known that her wolf had awoken weeks ago, I can feel my power waning when

LYRA The smell of cinnamon and apples fills the pack house. Abigale and I have been baking all day preparing for Chase and Annie to visit for an early Christmas celebration. My overly round belly is covered in flour because it keeps getting in the way. Every time I turn around I am knocking something over with my baby bump. Abigale has given up trying to clean up after me. I have been on my feet all day and my ankles are killing me. Looking down I can see that they are twice their normal size. My stomach is cramping, and it is becoming difficult to breathe. Abigale has tried to get me to sit down several times, but I really want to help. It is my first Christmas celebration with my mates and my brother, I want to do as much of the work as I possibly can. Bracing my hands against my back, I lean backwards trying to stretch my tight belly, but nothing seems to alleviate the pressure. Deciding t

LYRAThe cold gel hits my abdomen, and it makes me jump a little. Andrew and James are beside me grinning from ear to ear. They look like little kids on Christmas morning. I try to hide the waves of anxiety following through my body. Deep down I know everything is fine. I have seen her in my visions, I know that she is okay. But that does not stop me from worrying. So many terrible things have happened since I got pregnant, what if the visions have since changed. There is a tiny voice in my mind that is making me doubt if my visions are correct or not.I keep my eyes closed tight while the doctor rolls the ultrasound wand along my stomach. Then I hear it. The whooshing sound of a heartbeat fills the room. Andrew and James squeeze my hand tightly. Placing my free hand over my eyes I let out a sigh of relief, but I still cannot bring myself to look at the screen. I feel Andrew’s lips against my

LYRAAbigale sits beside me and fidgets nervously in her seat. “Your brother is okay with it,” she says frantically. Laying my hand on top of hers I guess her a little squeeze. “Whatever it is, I am sure we will be fine with it too.”Taking in a deep breath and holding it for a moment, Abigale breathes out slowly. “Annie and I are not actual sisters,” she begins. “she is my stepsister.”“Of course,” I smile brightly. “If she were a werewolf her hearing would have repaired itself.” Abigale watches me carefully as I piece together her family tree. “You said that your stepmother wanted to teach you both about all of the magical creatures that live in this world?”“Supernatural beings,” Abigale corrects. “Yes.”“They are witches!&rd

LYRAThis may sound crazy, but I simply could not wait for Grace to meet Prissy. I just knew that their had to be another person on the planet that Prissy did not want to murder, and I knew that Grace was that person. Linking my arm in hers I carefully guided her up the stairs to the pack house. Long gone is the youthful woman that trained me in the cabin. As soon as Lilith’s magic faded so did Grace’s youth, but I seemed to be the only one that noticed. Her once bright blue eyes are now a little duller than before and her beautiful black hair is now streaked with stripes of gray. When she smiles I can still see the vibrant, headstrong woman from the cabin, but I can tell that Lilith’s death has taken a toll on her.“The boys let me have a cat,” I explain excitedly. “Her name is Prissy, and she is absolutely perfect.”Grace pats my hand as we walk through the front door together.

ANDREW “I’m driving,” Lyra says as she grabs the keys to my Jeep from my hands. “Uh,” bile rises in my throat at the thought of anyone driving my Jeep but me. “Do you even have a license?” Lyra hops into the driver’s side and puts the key into the ignition and giving it a turn. “I mean not on me this moment. But I have one legally… I think,” she slides that last part in quietly thinking that I do not hear her over her revving the engine. “Nope,” I draw out the word before popping the ‘p’ with my lips. “You aren’t driving.” Reaching in I try to pull her from the seat, but she is ignoring me, fiddling with the dials on the dash and adjusting her mirrors. “When was the last time you ate?” She questions with an eyebrow raised and I can only glare in her direction because I know that she is technically right. I am in no shape to drive. “Exactly,” she chi
