Someone close once told me that nature is a sublime storyteller in every setting. Well, at first, I barely believe in that old aphorism until my wolf pack brothers and I went for our weekly night hunting in the northern part of the village.
Our alpha pack ordered the six of us to bring fresh meat from wild animals and vegetables for our weekly consumption. We have been doing that for the past six years. And we never disappointed everyone. "Are your rifles loaded already?" asks Lance, the eldest of the six of us. He was a year older than me and the first-born son of our alpha, making him the next in line of his father's pack. But compared to his alpha dad, Lance's wolf is known for being ruthless, manipulative, and self-centered. He believes that his dad owns everything including the houses we are living in, the air we are breathing, and even our wolves; that we cannot do things without them. Without him. My wolf detested him but I was left with no choice but to follow his every command. Their family owns the written rules everyone obeyed since my world began. And complaining is not the best choice if we don't want to get ousted from the pack or worse obliterated. "What's the point of using rifles when we have our claws and fangs, right?" and the one insisting on his theory is my best friend Buddy. Buddy and I grow together in this wolf world filled with uncertainties and injustice. Our houses, which were owned by Lance's dad, are connected, making it hard for us not to see each other night and day. "You've been telling us that, Buddy, over and over again," Lance said back. But his tone was coated with sarcasm in our ears. "I'm not gonna stain my hands with the dirty and stinky soil. So, if I were you, better shut your mouth and hop into the car before I will change my mind." My name is Ezekiel Ramirez. But the pack used to call me, Ezra. There is nothing more to share about me, really. Apart from that, my wolf came from a broken family, I think am the most inadequate one in history of the wolves. I live with my uncle, not by blood, Robin Fisher, the strongest beta of the Gemini Pack. He and his mate, Alexa, was not blessed with a son, so they adopted me when I was eight, right before my dad, died in front of my eyes. The way he got killed was brutal, unimaginable, and unforgettable by a group of wolves who tried to colonize the Gemini Pack. Good thing the pack was gifted with this one beta, my uncle, who killed most of our enemies. Since then, I promise my wolf that one day, if given the chance I will survive and become stronger similar to Uncle Robin, I will revenge for my papa's death. I will rip their bodies into pieces and put them on fire. The same thing they did to papa. The good thing is, Uncle Robin knows where their pack lives in peace. And about my mama, I know she already had her own family with her son, Razel, my stepbrother. Our age gap is three years. He is seventeen while I am already twenty. Needless to say, Razel and I know that we were step-brothers. Mama did not deny or push me away from him. Instead, she wants us to get close as much as possible. And we did it for her sake. Our hearts become closer like real brothers. My wolf has been keeping an eye on him even from the distance between us, and so is his wolf to me. And because of him, I met my fated mate, Cherry. We have been mates for almost three years already and our relationship is getting mature and intimate. "All right, who wants to take the first bullet?" asks Lance the second we reach our final stop. We then hop out of the car carrying our respective rifles. "Last week was mine. So, it'll be better if we do alternate." I propose to them, making sure there will be no bias and misunderstanding on the mission. However, the final say still depends on Lance. "How about it's my turn now?" the one proposing and taking the courage is Kendra, the weakest among the six of us which we agreed immediately. "Wait... Did you smell it?" Lance eagerly breathes while rolling his eyes throughout the dark forest. He then switches off the engine of the car to switch the lights off. Indeed my wolf can smell grilled barbecues from the distance. The scrumptious and luring smell even reminded my stomach that I miss my dinner before we headed to the forest. "Who wants to play hide and seek tonight?" he added. "don't worry, we are simply going to surprise them with a prank." "What?" Could not help but blurt out my suspicions. To our surprise, Lance takes off his clothes and shifted into a wolf. So, out of curiosity, I drag my werewolf senses heading to the source of the smell, and found a group of humans is having their camping nearby the cliff. I know Lance better than anyone. And I might have an idea or two about what has been running through his mind, so I shifted into a wolf as well, not to join his evil plan, but to stop him by hook or by crook. The rest of the team also followed. As soon as we are in our wolf forms, Lance flashes at the speed of light heading to the humans. I don't want to get left behind so doubled my speed to stay behind him. Lance ordered us to spread in four directions which the rest of us participated immediately, excluding my wolf. I was simply sneaking behind him. Good thing his excitement preceded to notice me. "Come on, babe. We've been together for like two years, right? Just this night, okay?" begs the man to the woman who is occupying the tent. But Lance is not going after them when he simply ignores those giggling and continued moving forward instead. He was after those groups of humans who are wasted and stayed outside having fun. Wait. What is my stepbrother doing in that group? As far as I can sense them, the majority of them were pure humans. And the only wolf in their crowd is him and the man seated next to him. To my surprise, Lance disappeared from his spot. Three seconds later, continuous howling backgrounded the stillness of the entire forest which immediately caught up everyone's attention, including Razel. As far as I know, Razel still has no access to his werewolf abilities yet. Truth be told, he hasn't had his first shift yet. And that is also what worried me the most. Their boisterous screaming almost broke my eardrums to the point that I was startled and not able to know what to do next. My feet were stiffened like steel and nailed to the ground. Memories bring back memories of when papa was slaughtered. Their boisterous screaming sounded the same as where we are. If not because someone bumped into me by accident, my wolf could have stayed in the same spot until Lance's evil plan ended. "Ezra?" Razel breathes out my name when our eyes were locked with each other. He was holding a female human even before they stumbled on the ground. When I catch a glimpse of the woman, I remember Razel once sent me a photo of the person he loves dearly. And she is the one in the photo. Her name is Felise, 17 years old. Every time Razel and I talk over the phone, he keeps on boasting to me that she is his first love and believes to be his last girlfriend. Apart from that she comes from a wealthy and powerful lineage, Razel declared that she is a sweet, loving, caring, and understanding kind of woman and lover. He even confessed to me that they almost have had sex if not because of her mom knocking on the door. As long as Felise makes him happy, I am happy for them as well. "R-U-N!" I uttered to Razel before anyone could see them. So, they run as fast as they can. After two seconds of studying the atmosphere, I realize Lance and Kendra are running in Razel's direction. Perhaps they already notice he is a wolf. And Lance plans to kill him before he could tell anyone about the disturbance we caused. The worst part of my situation is that I have to choose between my pack brothers and Razel. Worst-case scenario, if Razel gets killed, I cannot forgive myself for allowing Lance to succeed in his evil plan. Mama will get infuriated or worse, she will despise and disown me as her son. It will be an endless nightmare for me and my wolf. Mama and Razel are all I have. On the other hand, if I choose to trespass and prevent Lance from his plan on killing the sole witness of the incident, he will also get infuriated at me. It means to him that I choose and help Razel to inform his pack about us. The possible outcome will be a huge disaster for our pack. As a result, my wolf might be dismissed from the brotherhood and the pack. Uncle Robin and Alexa will chase me out of their house. I'll become homeless, a lone wolf, and worse of all, no one will accept me anymore. My wolf can barely imagine that either. On top of that, Lance and the entire Gemini pack are not aware that I have a stepbrother from my real mother. I have been hiding that one secret of my past, future, and present because Razel comes from a different pack. Wolves who come from another pack are enemies of our pack. Which among them should my wolf take side with? In the middle of taking things into consideration, a boisterous screaming coming from Razel and Felise vibrated my ears which resulted in my foot being lifted on its own and flashed in their direction before Lance could kill them or the two falling into the cliff. At my current speed, my wolf could barely reach Razel on time. So instead of trying to save them, I went straight to Lance and Kendra's wolves to make sure none of them could follow my stepbrother. We stumbled on the ground a few times and in unison. "What are you doing?" Lance blurted out. He then moves out of the ground in a rush and started chasing Razel again but I manage to stop him by bumping into his wolf. "Lance, STOP!" I yell at him but he did not listen to me. Instead, he screams at me, "he killed Monbert, you son of a bitch!" which surprised me and my decision on helping Razel was having a second thoughts. That I did not know. If I only know something happens before Razel bumped into my wolf, I could have stopped the incident from happening. But I believe that my brother's action was considered self-defense. After all, Monbert's sudden death could have been avoided if Lance did not try to prank and interrupted the camping. And he is blaming my stepbrother because of his reckless decision. So, I lifted my feet and rush in his direction but Kendra jumps on top of my wolf, trying to stop me. Compared to Lance, Kendra has the right to get more furious with my stepbrother when Monbert is his older brother. I cannot blame him for that. But Razel is also my brother and is innocent of this tragic incident. In order to stop him and Lance, I have to do what my stepbrother did. Kill him. Because my wolf has more experience when it comes to life-threatening battles, I manage to stain my claws and fangs with Kendra's blood. His mourning howl reaches Lance's attention. Lance's
Before I could step a foot forward, the woman flashes outside the convenience store with those items in her hands. Enough reason for me to follow her. "Please, let go of me!" she screams the second I managed to grab her hand. When she confirms there is nowhere else to go for her, she drops her butt on the ground and began pouring into tears. "I'm not going to hurt you, okay?" I said back, but I was the one who was worried because her wailing was all over the place. Humans might think I was doing something bad to her. "But, I have a question to ask you." Seeing her alive and even recognizing me at her first glance gives me at ease even if she doesn't feel the same way. Then I stealth sniff at her to check if something is going on inside her. The last thing I remember from the incident is that my claws leave her wounded while trying to save them. So, I grab her right hand by force and remove the plaster she covers it. And I once heard from Alpha Dustine that
When I got back to the convenience store, Melissa Mondragon, my co-worker who was assigned for the morning shift, got startled upon seeing my entire body covered in soil and blood. I still don't have a decent place to go so I used the store's stock room as my place temporarily. And the only two people who know about it are Melissa and the branch manager, Iniego. He seldom visits the convenience store so my only concern is Melissa. Melissa Mondragon is also twenty years old and was similar to my situation. She runs away from home because her entire family chases her out. However, the only difference between us is that she is a pure human and has her real family, a mother, father, and siblings who are living under one roof. On top of that, she also possesses a one-of-a-kind beau similar to my fated mate, Cherry. My wolf just doesn't know if she is currently in a relationship though. I'm a bit embarrassed to ask her that private question. Needless to say, I am st
"Yeah, what are you talking about, Razel? Wait. Are you sick or something? Or are you on drugs right now?" inquires the other student which caused me to roll my eyes to the ceiling. Razel and I have been communicating day and night over the phone but he never mentioned about consuming drugs or any deadly elements that could harm his body. He was too smart enough to ruin his life that easily. As his older brother, I never miss telling him not to use drugs or any harmful elements to boast his confidence or to make it an excuse when his life turns into a mess. Werewolves don't need drugs in their bodies. Not unless you are in the middle of a crisis or desperate. But I know Razel more than anyone. He fell head over heels for his Felise because their relationship, I believe, is in the middle of getting intimate. "I think your boyfriend needs utmost attention, Felise. He's already talking nonsense things." says her friend before she laughed. "Who says Razel is still
After the second failed attempt of convincing Razel to be on my side, I found myself standing in the corner of the convenience store, completely bothered and helpless. And I have been standing and mute for hours. My wolf could barely hide those consecutive cold sighs of dismay and heavy heart while listening to Melissa at the counter entertaining the customers. I could not force my lips to turn into a smile even if it was required for us. "Don't give the customers that kind of face, Ezra," says Melissa right after she comes out of the storage room. She then slaps my shoulder and smiled, trying to lift my mood. Her shift just started. And she was on her way to check our inventory to get the items that were about to expire. Getting inventories that are about to expire means a huge discount for us if we want to buy them. "Smile." she added. "though your heart is aching. Smile even though it's already unbearable and is breaking you apart. Want some bottle of beer af
"So, it happens that I am completely wondering if Alpha Dustine knows about this," I said back, trying to buy enough time to make a better plan without anyone from Melissa and Razel getting hurt. Based on my quick observation, the convenience store only has two exits. The main and exit doors happen to be connected with each other. And that was built in across from me, behind Robert and his two close relatives. There is no way I could rush both Melissa and Razel out of the convenience store without getting caught by one of them. There were also glass walls surrounding us but I highly doubt if our bodies can break them as fast as two to three seconds. One of them could get us. But getting Melissa and Razel out is the only solution my brain could think of right now unless I have to fight and beat Robert and his relatives in front of Melissa. In order to do that, I have to shift into the monster I really am in front of her. That could be the last thing I must do. Or e
"Is your brother gonna be okay?" Iniego asks me the second I stepped foot into the convenience store. Melissa wants to have eye-to-eye contact with me but I avoided them. Perhaps she has hundreds of questions about my conversation with Robert earlier. Robert mentioned us being wolves and brothers of murderers. "He will be, Mr. Iniego. Thanks for the concern." I said back. "May I know what the cops say regarding the case?" Earlier while talking to Razel in the parking lot, I heard Iniego and the cops talking about the store being temporarily closed for a few days until the case against Robert and his relatives get close. What worried me is if that happens, I no longer have a place to sleep and income to support me in those jobless days. The convenience store is the only place I could depend on. I still have no human friends in the city apart from Melissa and Iniego. "They decided to close the store until further notice," says Mr. Iniego the way I expected. "They give us a week but
Razel, as far as I know, did not blurt out because tonight is the full moon. He already shifted in front of my eyes without the influence of the moon's calling. It means to me that his dad already equipped him well when that happens. What scares and annoys him was because of how upfront my wolf is in front of his human friends. On top of that, Razel is afraid that I might say a word about them being notorious monsters in front of them. He said to himself that my wolf has no more value at all. That no pack will protect me because I am already a lone wolf. Mateless. Homeless. Without someone on my side. Little did he know that being a lone wolf also has the biggest advantage the world could offer. And I have been holding onto that one main advantage since the day I step out of the pack. Everyone's secrets are not safe with me. I can disclose and peel off the mask behind their faces if I want to. If I am desperate enough for him to shut off his mouth and listen to me
"You are the ones who killed me in the first place, Mom, Dad. My happiness. My rights. And on top of that, my future. What kind of parents do that to their daughter? I'm so sorry if I disrupted your peaceful dinner." Before I could lose my love and respect for my parents, I evacuated the house with a heavy heart and endless tears. There are no more words or courage left in me that could convince them. So I decided to focus on building my second family which is the pack the way Ezra and I wanted it to be. Piece by piece, we achieve a few things on our bucket list. Our numbers increased to a hundred. Three days later, our fifty became a hundred, and a hundred became a thousand in a matter of days with the help of Razel's pack and Ezra's endless effort to solve every problem every time we encountered one. On top of that, we haven't heard anything from the rest of the packs around us either, giving us enough time to become strong. For me to become the best version of
"No," Ezra blurted, "Let's stick with the plan. Baptism and the Mating Night. Rust will help you guys with the flow of the events. I'll be patrolling the perimeter to make sure the plan succeeds tonight." Right after insisting, Ezra shifted into a wolf and ran away. Yes. Running away would be the perfect definition of what he thinks he's doing right now. He wants to hide his feelings - that he was hurting by the fact that I am going to mate his stepbrother. I know Ezra more than anyone in the world. His pain was excruciatingly unbearable that was why he could not bear to see me getting mated to Razel. All though it was his plan in the first place, he didn't want to turn back on his words even if his stepbrother already confessed to us the possibility of not getting anything from their pack. As soon as Ezra was gone out of my sight, Rust ordered us to begin the baptism. Right after the successful baptism of the Crescent moon pack, I found myself in the middle o
"How about let's prove that your alpha is useless? Kill them all!" Alexander ordered his wolves before he shifted into one. His boisterous growls produced mild movements of the ground, scaring the hell out of everyone, including Ezra and Razel. Before anyone could lay their claws and fangs on my pack members, I jumped on top of Alexander and landed alongside Ezra and Razel. My desire to kill washed over me while shifting the color of my eyes. We already lost two of our pack members. Those numbers all end there. Alexander and his wolves were taken aback when I growled louder than him. My growls did not just produce continuous movements on the ground and shoo all the wild animals around us but shook off everyone's nerves. There was this strange energy that surged in every fiber of my muscle, reverberating through me like a bolt of lightning. I could even feel my claws and fangs increase in size. Sharpened by the seconds. The brown hair attached to my body refl
"No, I highly doubt that," Ezra replied, compared to me and Razel, his voice still filled with hope. "There is another group of wolves a few meters away from the house. They have Mom and your father in that car." That makes sense. My senses were focused only on those werewolves above us. Diverting my heightened senses away from them did not even come to mind. Indeed, there, not far away from the house, stood ten more of Alexander's pack, surrounding the car where Razel's parents are held captives. Ezra's werewolf instincts about Rustom holding them alive were precisely right. Rustom had his motive for letting them stay alive. That also makes me wonder why Alexander agreed to help us save Razel's parents in exchange for Lance. Does that mean he also had his motive for keeping Lance? If there was one, what could it be? But no matter what that is, I must be prepared. "There were thirty werewolves in total surrounding us right now," one of our new members conf
"What will happen to them?" I asked those security guards who dragged me to the parking lot and hopped me into someone's black BMW car by force. Then we took off. "Don't give me that kind of glance, old man." I continued, this time, with a demanding tone, "You knew something. What does Aric wants from them?" "We don't know what Alpha Aric wants from them exactly, but I heard it will not do good to both of them..." As the old man kept on talking, I kept my eyes glancing in and out of the car, especially the direction we were heading. Based on my quick observation, we are not heading to my apartment, my parents' place, or Aric's den, but to the airport. Behind me, if I am not mistaken, were two large luggage bags. What's going on? I know what I did was unforgivable. But are they planning to separate me from Ezra? No. Aric is going to kill them. We still have an unfinished business with Alexander. And we just built our own pack. I must do something because my
Ezra nodded, "Simply because I closed my eyes back then. What if they notice and attack us all of a sudden?" he replied. I don't know if he was simply teasing me or not with his response. His overflowing rage toward me twenty seconds ago, but our ten long seconds kiss, melted and turned into a fine blushing. However, it does not change the fact that he wanted me to mate with his stepbrother. "Sorry," I uttered softly, "But I'm afraid my wolf cannot mate Razel right now, Ezra." "May I know the reason?" he insisted, his voice started to calm down as well. Perhaps he already confirmed that those wolves just passed by were already gone. There was no other way they could have sensed anyone's presence underneath the abandoned house because Ezra and Razel securely surrounded the place with human poop and other disgusting smells to distract a werewolf's heightened sense of smell. Even if we were outside sitting inside the car, they could bearly trace us either because
Ezra's serious expression cut deeper into my heart. However, my instinct senses something more than meets the eye. It seems to me that he had something in mind that he was afraid for me to know. A part of me wanted to ask him about it but I know today is not the best time to push it through. Ezra still has something in his mind. He had to save his Mom to be able to make peace with his stepbrother. Let alone we still need to negotiate with Alexander which I still found not an assurance that their parents are still alive a the moment. That one concern alone could turn everything upside down. The best thing I can do for myself right now is to support Ezra's plan. In order to help Ezra build the pack, my wolf must address the mess I made at the wedding first. I don't want to pour fuel into Ezra's blazing fire so I must make sure he or Razel do not get involved with it. So I proposed to Ezra to explain to us about the Crescent pack. Part of his job being my advisor is
As soon as I reached the middle part of the red carpet, my feet lost their will to move forward. My throat dried all of a sudden accompanied by the tears in my eyes flooding my cheeks. "Ezra, please, save me. I can't do this anymore." I uttered to myself. Everyone in the wedding venue, most especially the groom, furrowed when I simply looked him in the eye. Doubts were apparently displayed all over my face. The moon goddess seemed to have heard my impossible prayer when everyone's attention was shifted onto someone else - to the person who just slammed the door of the church open. I slowly turned around and found a familiar face. Though his entire face was covered in sweat and dirt, my instinct can never get mistaken. My knight in shining armor just arrived a bit late but it was the thought that counts. "Razel," I softly mumbled his name. Even though he was not my true knight in shining armor, it was the thought that counted for me. I don't what exactly happene
"Right," Razel nodded his head, "Aric and his men will be out the entire day to attend the wedding. It will be our only chance to achieve the plan. Ezra and I must take the opportunity of them being gone to search for Lance in his den. Is that what you mean by it, Brother Ezra?" "It is the only way I could think of we could save our parents, Felise." Ezra agreed. "We hope you understand that. Please, do me a favor. I need you to get married to Aric tomorrow." My heart feels like I was left all alone and got sunk into the bottom of the wide blue ocean that the two could do such a thing to me as though none of them considered how I might feel about it. I want to save their parents as much as they do, but I did not expect it to be this way - hurting me badly. Selling me to the wolf whom I hated the most. On top of that, my love and care for Ezra was unconditional. I may have promised him that my wolf would do everything to make him happy, but no matter how hard I try
