Valeria POV
The pale morning light filtered through my curtains, casting a soft glow across my room. I lay in bed, motionless. The events of the previous night playing on repeat in my mind like a nightmare.
The lingering scent of blood, Alerion’s icy gaze and the way his hand had wrapped around my throat – teased into my mind afresh hanging like a heavy cloud. I had barely slept, every creak kept me on the edge, as if something or someone could be lurking at the corner of my room, waiting for the perfect moment to strangle me in my sleep.
I had to tell my mother – at least. Whatever Alerion and his family were doing it had to be illegal right?
My hands hovered over my phone, fingers trembling as I considered calling my mother, after a moment’s hesitation. I dialed her number and had almost given up that she wouldn’t pick up when she answered.
“Hey, sweetheart, good morning.” She said breezily.
“Mom!” I started without a preamble “There’s something I want to tell you. Last night…”
“Hold on a sec, dear!” my mom interrupted and turned to speak to someone in the background. From the rich masculine tone, I knew it was Alpha Cassian.
I heard my mother’s shrill laugh followed by a kissing sound. A moment later, her voice came through again.
“Valeria, it’s time for breakfast, let’s not keep the others waiting. Come downstairs,” with that she ended the call without allowing me to continue the conversation.
Sighing, I pushed myself out of bed and threw some clothes on before heading to the dining room. When I entered, it was just my mother and Alpha Cassian at the table. They had their heads joined closely – it was as if they were talking about something. When I came in, they looked up and my mother smiled at me.
“Val, you’re here?”
I nodded taking my place at the table. My gaze flitted to my mother who was seated next to Cassian at the head of the table. Her face was radiant with a soft glow of contentment and ease that I had rarely seen in recent years. It was strange – too strange.
I watched as she leaned toward Cassian, her hand gently resting on his arm and the way he smiled at her… It was almost unsettling how *normal* they seemed together. He kissed my mom’s hand and she giggled like a schoolgirl, her cheeks flushing with what seemed like genuine affection.
It felt so out of place that I had to bite my lip to keep from saying anything. My mind was screaming at me to speak up, to tell my mother about the horrifying encounter I had with Alerion last night. How his shirt had been stained with blood, how he had cornered me and had warned me. I opened my mouth, the words forming on my lips…
But then, I looked at my mom again, the light in my her eyes, the peace on her face that I hadn’t seen after my father disappeared and was declared dead. My mother was happy. Happier than she’d been in years. How could I shatter that peace now?
Instead, I swallowed the words and took a small sip of tea, the warmth doing little to calm the chill inside me.
I would keep quiet, at least for now.
I stirred at my cup of tea taking another sip when my mother’s voice came to me. “Val! You were going to tell me something on the phone a while ago. What is that dear? What was it about last night?”
As I opened my mouth to speak, Alerion walked into the dining room, his piercing gaze met mine and a chill ran down my spine. The memory of his hand around my throat flashed through my mind.
“Good morning, Valeria,” he greeted then came to sit directly across from me, his red hair catching the morning light like fire, his gaze on me with the same intensity as the previous night. “Did you sleep well?”
The question was a warning, a reminder for me not to say anything to anyone. A shiver crawled down my spine as my breath hitched. I forced a tight-lipped smile and nodded.
“I…I slept fine, thank you.”
His gaze remained on me for a moment, longer than necessary before he smirked and nodded. “I’m glad, little sister.”
“So, what was it dear?” My mother pressed further “What were you going to say?’
“It was nothing,” I said hurriedly feeling Alerion’s gaze on me “I just wanted to ask you if you slept well.”
“Oh, thanks darling, I did!” she chuckled, turning back to Cassian who stared at her fondly.
Breakfast was a quiet affair. I already lost my appetite so I didn’t eat much. Alpha Cassian suddenly cleared his throat making me look up.
“Valeria,” he began his voice smooth and commanding. “I took the liberty of making some changes regarding your education.
I frowned. “Changes?”
“Yes!” Cassian said flatly as if he was annoyed at my question. “I’ve transferred you to Lysander’s school. It’s a more suitable environment for you. An all-werewolf academy will prepare you for a better future. It doesn’t make sense to still attend your human school since you live here now.”
The fork slipped from my fingers, clattering against my plate. I stared at Alpha Cassian unable to process his words. An all-werewolf school? The thought of being surrounded by more people like Alpha Cassian and his children sent a wave of panic through me. I would never fit into that world, not after the unsettling feeling of staying a night with the Windsors’.
“But… my friends,” I began, my voice trembling. “My old school…”
I caught sight of my mother’s face and saw the hope and excitement in her eyes. She looked towards Cassian with gratitude as if to thank him for caring enough to make such a decision. If anything, my mother looked… proud. The words in my throat dried off immediately and I knew I couldn’t say No.
So, I swallowed the lump at the back of my throat and forced a small, shaky smile.
“Thank you,” I said “That’s …very thoughtful of you.”
“Good,” Alpha Cassian nodded. “Now let’s eat up, we have a lot of things to do today.”
After breakfast, I went up to my room to bathe and came downstairs to wait for further instructions from Alpha Cassian.
“The driver will take both you and Lysander to school today,” Cassian started. “It’ll give you a chance to get acquainted with your new classmates and Lysander can be your guide for now.”
My stomach churned again, the image of Lysander watching me and Alerion last night flashing in my mind. That eerie, unsettling smile on his lips as he stood on the staircase still creeped me out. The thought of being alone with him in a car filled me with dread and made my skin crawl. I had no idea what kind of person he truly was, but after last night, I didn’t want to find out.
“I –” I started, desperate to find a way out. “I could go on my own. It’s not that far…”
“It was not a suggestion, Valeria,” Cassian said with a cold smile. “You should start getting used to your brothers, we are family now and you’ll need his help to adjust.”
I bit my lip, feeling the walls close in. I wanted to argue further, to say I’d rather walk or take the bus. Anything but sit in a confined space with Lysander but I knew it wouldn’t matter. Alpha Cassian wasn’t joking about it not being a suggestion. Besides, I didn’t want to upset my mother again.
“Of course!” I said finally, lowering my eyes. “Thank you, Alpha.”
My mother reached out to me, squeezing my hand. “I’m so proud of you, sweetheart,” she said softly. “This is a good change and you’ll fit in just fine. Have fun today, okay?”
I tried to return my mother’s smile but my chest felt heavy and the smile didn’t reach my eyes.
Cassian was already at the door with an impatient look on his face. “Start heading out, Valeria, the driver is waiting. You don’t want to be late on your first day.”
I nodded, my legs feeling shaky as I walked to the front door. I could feel Alerion’s gaze on me again, but I didn’t dare meet his eyes. Not now. I was too rattled to handle whatever silent message he was sending me.
With a final glance at my mother, I opened the door and slipped out.
I sighed in relief when I noticed Lysander wasn’t out yet. It would give me enough time to prepare myself mentally. I approached the sleek black car, gleaming in the morning light. I took a deep breath and opened the car door. Green and blue irises regarded me with amusement…
Lounging in the back seat, with a smirk on his face, eyes gleaming, dressed casually was none other than the devil himself -Lysander.
His gaze raked my form before he drawled. “Ready for your first day at school?”
Valeria POVThe drive to school was torture.I perched at the other end of the back seat, holding my breath while Lysander sat next to me, his presence feeling the entire car. Finally, the car pulled up, in front of a big gate that had the name ‘Moonhaven Academy’ embossed on the top.The school was such a beautiful architectural edifice with wrought iron barriers and wolf motifs adorning the entrance. As we drove through the gate, my eyes widened – impressed by the ancient stone building and modern glass structures that were the school. There was large, sprawling, neatly pruned lawns with flower hedges made up of different beautiful flowers. On the lawns were tall trees, pruned too – and serving as cover for the benches. I saw some students sitting on the grass, taking pictures, talking and laughing.Everyone dressed so impeccable, and looked so perfect… this was nothing like my former school which had overgrown grasses and hedges with students dressed as they wanted, here, although
Valeria POVBy the time I finally arrived at the packhouse, it was too late.My feet ached as I trudged up the driveway, the sun was setting, casting long shadows across the manicured lawn and my heart was heavy with fear and sadness. I had gotten lost several while trying to track my way to the pack house, all I wanted right now was a warm bath and maybe food. But as I neared the packhouse, it was anything but welcoming. It felt like a prison. As the front door opened, I saw my mother pacing in the foyer, worry etched across her face. As soon as she saw me, she ran up to me.“Valeria! Where have you been? I’ve been calling you for hours. Lysander said he didn’t see you after school and came home thinking you had come ahead. What happened dear?”My eyes darted past my mom to where Lysander was lounging on the stairs, his pupils glinting with amusement. He was watching me intently, a slow smug smile curving his lips.He knew.He knew exactly what he had done, leaving me stranded at sch
Alerion POVI and my brothers gathered in the library later that night after I was done with my work for the day.We all took our usual spots, with me sitting at the chair next to the mahogany table, my back against the high-backed leather chair, my fingers drumming against the armrest rhythmically. Caius was nearby, leaning against a bookshelf with his usual calm demeanour adjusting his glasses now and again with a bored expression on his face.Zane was sprawled on the couch, his muscular frame taking up more than half of it and Lysander, the youngest, lounged by the window, his eyes gleaming with their usual mischief. We only gathered in the library whenever we wanted to talk about something that bothered us and tonight’s discussion was about Valera and her mother. Well, mostly Valeria. Her mother seemed to be pushing the right buttons with my father, making her out of our reach, at least for now.“She’s just like her mother,” Lysander sneered, crossing his arms over his chest. “She
Valeria POVMy step-brothers went easy on me for the rest of the week. They treated me like I was invisible but that was fine since they were no longer bullying me. Maybe they finally had a rethink. So, I decided to take my mother’s advice. The sound of sizzling oil filled the kitchen as I carefully arranged the honey-glazed chicken inside a lunch box. I tried to copy the movements of the chef whose tutorials I had seen, cutting the vegetables into perfect shapes – carrots carved into delicate flowers, cucumbers rolled into a beautiful spiral. The clock in the kitchen read 5:30 Am but I have been awake since four, determined to make the perfect lunch for my Oldest brother, Alerion.Three weeks of living in the Packhouse has taught me to treasure these quiet morning hours before the maids arrived, before my step-father’s critical gaze – although he rarely speaks to me except when he wants to organize my life the way it pleases him and wants to inform me, still I couldn’t help but feel
Valeria POVThat evening, I sat at my desk calculating my remaining savings which had dwindled significantly after my recent attempts at buying my step-brothers affection. My mother’s words from breakfast some days ago echoed in my mind. “You should focus on building relationships between yourself and your brothers. Don’t just give up because they’re not being receptive yet.”I had tried to explain to her about the gifts and lunches, about my efforts to connect with them but my mother had insisted I wasn’t trying enough.“If they’re not receptive, you’re not trying hard enough. They’ll be Future Alphas one day and are perfect examples of grace and refinement. The problem must lie with your approach. So, I kept trying. I learned all of their favourite food, spent hours browsing the stores for perfect gifts, and offered help with tasks before being asked but each of my attempts was met with the same polite dismissal, each gift redirected to another person and today… I couldn’t believe t
Valeria POVEight Months later…I struck a day off the calendar sighing with content – three more days until my eighteenth birthday. Three days until I could finally escape this prison.I had even planned everything: a small apartment in the city, far from Red Ridge Pack, I’d already gotten a job at a bookstore, and thankfully since I was no longer vying for the affection of my stepbrothers, I’ve been able to save. Not only that, I was supposed to have gotten my wolf at 14 but I am almost 18, everyone has assumed I am human but for me, it was the best thing ever. No wolf meant no pack bonds to break, no mate to pine for, no ties to sever except the already fragile ones binding me to this family that had never wanted me.The only problem was my stepfather, Alpha Cassian was growing impatient.A month ago, I’d overheard him telling my mother, that as soon as I turn 18, I’ll be mated off.His voice had been calm but it was laced with disdain as if it was my fault that I had no wolf.“She
Zane POVI leaned against the doorframe of the library watching my brothers pace the room. The tension in the library was thick enough to choke on anyone and I couldn’t blame them. No one expects that their mate will turn out to be the same girl they’ve maltreated. There was this guilt already gnawing at my heart, just thinking about that but… there was also my wolf, begging me to be with her…The image of Valeria rising from the pool last night, her wet clothes sticking to all those curves on her body – made my manliness move with excitement just thinking about all the things I want to do to that body.Which is what I want to do more than anything right now… but for my brothers.“Is it even possible?” Lysander broke the silence. He was more restless than the others. “The Moon Goddess cannot have given her to us as a mate. Something doesn’t feel right?” “I would have believed you, Ly!” I said quietly “But you remember how crazy our wolves had gone when she got hers? I think the Moon
Valeria POVFor the first time in my life, I wasn’t alone in my mind.I lay on my bed staring up at the ceiling. My mind was racing, my heart was still pounding from everything that had happened earlier. I still couldn’t believe what started as a disaster turned out to be a good thing for me.I had my wolf.“Hello, Valeria,” Hazel’s voice warmed into my heart. “You’ve waited so long for me.”Curled up in my bed, my hair was still damp from the pool but I was too excited to care. I close my eyes, letting myself disappear into my small world with my wolf.“I’m so happy to meet you,” I murmured. “I thought I was broken. Everyone said I was just human, that I’d never have a wolf and they called me…”“Useless? Weak?” Hazel finished for me. “You are none of those things, Valeria. They were wrong. You weren’t broken or wolfless. I was simply waiting for the right time. You are special, and you’re meant for more than just this small life. And you were becoming…”“Becoming what and how am I sp
~Valeria~You know that moment when you're stuck between the Devil and the deep blue sea, and neither option looks pretty? Yeah, that was me.Zane was heading straight for me, eyes dark with anger, jaw tight, walking trouble disguised as charmfor naive little girls. My instinct pinched me to take the nearest exit, but that would only make things worse. So I stood gracefully, glancing around to see if anyone else had noticed the raging tornado that had just entered the room.Caius must have noticed but he didn’t budge and I didn’t expect him to.“Zane, what a surprise.” My lips curled into something resembling a smile, but my teeth were clenched. “Didn’t expect to see you here.”If his eyes could shoot fire, I’d be ashes by now. He didn’t say a word but his eyes howled a thousand things I could understand. A few people were already staring and my heart raced from being the center of attraction in a bad way.Without caring at all for his image or mine, Zane grabbed me by the arm and dr
~Valeria~“You need a break from that shithole they call an academy,” Landon said the moment I answered the FaceTime call. His face filled my screen, seeming more upset over the stories he had heard of my suffering. I sighed, shifting against my pillows. “Unless you have a magic wand to make everyone shut up, I don’t see how that’s possible.”Landon leaned back against what looked like an expensive leather chair. “Actually,” he drawled, “I’ve got something even better.”I raised a brow. “And that is?”“There’s a gala this weekend—high-end, exclusive, the kind of event that could actually do you some good.”I hesitated. The idea of walking into a room full of powerful strangers, pretending I belonged, made my stomach twist.“I don’t know, Lan…”He tilted his head. “Come on, Val. Think of it as a chance to network. Expand your circle. Show people you’re more than the rumors.”I bit my lip, still unconvinced. “I’d rather stay home and study with Caius.”“Study? Come on, Val.”“There wil
~Valeria~If there was a world record for how fast someone’s life could go to hell thrice in a row, I was pretty sure I’d just broken it.I thought everyone went back to paying attention at Amanda but she doubled her game and it made it even worst with the scandals.School had become a torture ground and I dreaded the weekdays badly.Even teachers looked at me with disgust and made snide comments about my grades dropping low.“If you focused more on school than boys, you wouldn’t have an F on your maths test.” Mr. Collins said as I approached him in his office about my scores.Right there, my breathing went shallow and I was close to passing out from the drum of insults loaded on me.I expected them to know better. I wasn’t skipping classes to make out under the bleachers. I was suffocating under the pressure of deadlines, assignments and soul crushing comments and drags on my social media. But it didn’t matter to them to stop and think for a second that I was the victim here.Swallow
~Valeria~The thing with rumors? They never really die. You can suppress them with facts but some people would never accept the truth. They would rather eat me up with their eyes and mutter insults in disgust. And right now? I just wanted the ground to swallow me from this walk of disgrace.I knew appearing in school would be the biggest mistake but I didn’t expect the silence. I thought they would throw crumpled papers at my head, laugh in my face or mutter curses but they didn’t.Not even a single whisper as I passed, just eyes, so many damn eyes watching me like I had their favorite soap opera on my face.Honestly, it was worse than the gossip. At least when people talked, I could pretend I didn’t care but not now.“Just keep walking.” Lysander muttered beside me, jolting me back to the reality that he was here.I did keep walking, head high, spine straight like a model like I hadn’t read half the school calling me every single name under the sun on social media last night.Slut.
~Valeria~The guilt was eating me alive.I wasn’t the one who called Landon. I wasn’t the one who embarrassed him. But I was the reason it happened.Maybe that’s why Alerion’s words wouldn’t stop echoing in my head.I exhaled sharply and pulled out my phone.I hesitated for a second, my thumb hovering over the call button. Then, before I could talk myself out of it, I pressed it.He answered almost immediately.“Val?” His voice was deep, groggy, like he had just woken up. And damn, it was the kind of voice that could make any girl weak in the knees.I swallowed. “Hey… are you busy?”There was a pause. Then a lazy chuckle. “Well, I am now.”Despite everything, a small smile tugged at my lips.“I..uh, I’m sorry for disturbing you.”“I can never see you as a burden, Val.” His voice was soft, sincere. And just like that, my heart did a stupid little flip. His words made me even more guilty because he was the sweetest guy ever and I just had to make him look bad with my selfish actions.Cl
~Alerion~I was in the wrong place at the right time. That was the only explanation. I wasn’t following her. I wasn’t looking for her. I was just... there. Walking. Thinking. Telling myself I didn’t care where she was or who she was with. And then I heard it. A struggle for life. A sharp gasp. My body reacted before my brain did. My wolf grew reckless, muscles tensing, instincts screaming one thing.Protect her. The moment I saw her, my stomach twisted. She was fighting, but she was losing. For the first time in my life, I felt something I never wanted to feel. Panic. A sick, helpless kind of fear that turned my blood to ice. I hated it. I fucking hated it. And I was going to make them pay for it. The fight was over before it even began. I moved through them like a blade through flesh. Quick. Brutal. Relentless. By the time the last one fell, my breathing was steady, my heart still hammering but I wasn’t afraid anymore. I was angry. Valeria was staring at me, wide-eyed,
~Valeria~I thought I was about to die.It wasn’t even dramatic or some slow-motion, life-flashing-before-my-eyes kind of moment. One second, I was fighting, throwing every last bit of strength into getting away, and the next, I was outnumbered, overpowered, and completely screwed. And then he showed up.Alerion.It happened so fast, I barely had time to register it. One second, the rogue in front of me was lunging, fangs bared, hands ready to grab me, and the next… Snap. A sickening crunch echoed through the alley as the rogue’s body crumpled to the ground. For a second, everything went still. Then the others turned to him, instinctively backing up, their fight-or-flight instincts kicking in too late.Because Alerion was already moving. And he didn’t just fight them;; he slaughtered them.I’d seen him covered in blood before. That first night when I saw him walk into the house, his shirt torn, hands stained with crimson red. I thought maybe it was from some typical Alpha bullshit,
~Valeria~I wasn’t sure if I could call it a date. Landon and I had already finalized that we wouldn’t be doing any of that, but that didn’t mean we couldn’t still hang out.And honestly? It was kind of nice having someone to talk to without all the baggage that came with my usual life.I didn’t have to walk on eggshells around him and that was my favorite part.I took a sip of my drink, swirling the straw slowly as I glanced at him. “You know, I think this is the longest I’ve ever willingly spent time with someone from your pack or any other pack to be honest.”Landon chuckled, his eyes twinkling with delight as he leaned against the booth. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”“You most definitely should…” I said, smirking. “I don’t really…do people.”“Oh, trust me, I noticed.”“And I was starting to feel proud that I got to be one of the chosen ones.” He winked at me.I playfully rolled my eyes but I didn’t deny it. He was t wrong at all. Most people were either a nightmare or a leech
~Caius~Valeria sat across from me, her brows creased in frustration as she tapped the eraser of her pencil against her notebook. My eyes couldn’t help but stay glued to the way she bit her lower lip, deep in concentration. For a moment, I forgot why I was even here, wondering what she would think when she noticed how closely I was watching her. “Focus,” she muttered to herself, her eyes scanning the page.I smirked. “You know, talking to yourself won’t magically provide a solution to the equation.”She fired me a glare before huffing and leaning back in her chair. “I’m really trying, you know, but this is just boring.”“Math has never been fun; you just have to get used to it.” “That’s how you put your head in the game and pass.” I advised. She rolled her eyes, but before she could give a response, the door opened. “Valeria,” Evelyn’s voice interrupted, her eyes roving between us.Valeria tensed, straightening in her chair. “Yes?”That was strange. She always addressed her with
