KEEGAN
Her stare had a way of making me feel like shit. She was the last person I'd expected to meet today. Scratch that, I never thought I would see her again."You don't recognize me?" She asked and I blinked. I couldn't forget her even if I tried. It was probably as a result of my guilt. The sight of her had shaken me, but I'd refused to let it show. She was more beautiful than ever. Her pink hair suited her as well. Her eyes were bluer than the sea, but I could see the pain ingrained in them. I was well aware that it was the pain I'd caused her. Her scent washed over me, bringing along with it, the strong feeling of nostalgia. Fuck, I missed her. However, I didn't have the right to confess how much I had ached for her. So, I chose to be a stranger to her."Should I?" I deadpanned, keeping my expression schooled. She was hurt. I could tell by the way she took a shuddering breath, her eyes filling up with tears. My heart squeezed as I watched her struggle to maintain her composure."That's not funny, you know?" She breathed, her voice shaky."I'm sorry," I wanted to say."It was never my intention to crack a joke. I'm simply here to take you to your assigned quarters" I said. She stared at me for a moment, her eyes wide. Then, she laughed. No matter how much she tried to hide it, her frustration and pain was evident."You really don't remember me? I-I don't know if I should feel terrified or relieved" she said."I'm only here to take you to your assigned room" I told her. She frowned, her lips set in a grim line. Then, she grabbed her bag."Fine. Lead the way"I walked out of the room and she followed behind me. I could feel her piercing gaze on me. I wanted to know what she was thinking. The fact that she'd come a long way just to find me made me feel uneasy. She must be disappointed."You're not going to ask me?" She asked. I didn't stop to look at her."Ask what?""Aren't you going to ask me how I know you? Aren't you going to ask me why I'm here? Aren't you curious at all?""I'm not curious. Even if you knew me way before now, I'll like you to keep it to yourself. I don't know you. Neither am I curious about you"She went silent. She was no longer following behind me, I noticed. So, I halted in my tracks, preparing myself to face her again."You're lying. I refuse to believe that you don't feel the bond between us" she said and I stiffened.Slowly, I turned around to face her, only for the air to be knocked out of my lungs when she suddenly embraced me. Every muscle in my body tingled but I dared not move. Her scent, dear God, her scent...it was driving me crazy."Just this once. Let me be vulnerable. Just let me hold you in my arms... please" she croakedI clenched my jaw, fighting against the urge to hold her. When she pulled away, her eyes were sad."I'm a fool, aren't I? I came here to let go. But, here am I... reaching out for you. This must be the reason why you abandoned me"Believe me, her words stung. It made my heart bleed. Ava deserved better. I'd abandoned her because I didn't want to reject her. Little did I know that abandoning would cause her a bigger pain."You didn't hear any of my rant, okay? Just ignore it. You can take me to the room now" she said, refusing to make eye contact with me.Pain was no stranger to me but somehow, I'd managed to drag my mate into my world of bleak misery....Letting out a sigh, I knocked on the door of the pack leader's office. I wanted to ask for a few days off. I didn't want to see Ava again. I was worried that she would end up crashing through my walls."Come in."I walked in and was greeted by the sight of Shade, leader of the shadow assassins. She was nothing short of a terror. She was feared by both great and small. There were rumors of her being the offspring of a demon and a werewolf."Where have you been all day? I know I gave you the day off because you said you were exhausted. But, you didn't come to see me at all" Shade said, her brows furrowed. Her silver gaze pinned me with fiery accusation. Shade was almost as tall as me. She had bright silver hair that was cut in a mohawk style.I heaved a sigh and rubbed my tired eyes, my exhaustion hitting me hard. Seeing Ava had drained me of my energy. The guilt that had been eating away at my dark soul had taken a bigger bite today. It had left me feeling achy and empty. Nonetheless, I didn't want Shade to know about this. If she knew that my fated mate was somewhere within the pack house, she wouldn't hesitate to assassinate her. She was the type of woman who would do everything to have her own way. This was what made her extremely dangerous."You are not saying anything. Are you alright? You don't look so good" she said, rising to her feet."I'm fine""I was just about to ask someone to fetch you" She said."I'm here to ask you for a favor" I breathed. She narrowed her eyes, a silver glint flashing over her grey irises."What favor?""Let me take three more days off"The words had barely escaped my lips when she grabbed the front of my shirt and pushed me against the wall across her table, in full speed. Her grip was tight, tight enough to block my airways. Shade was strong, way too strong to be messed with. Her viciousness was just as extreme as the raw power that flowed through her veins."Don't tell me you're already seeing another woman. You've been distant ever since you returned from your last mission.""No, I'm not..."She cut me off, tightening her grip. I coughed, sputtering as I struggled to breathe."I can smell a she wolf on you" she hissed. My eyes widened at the memory of Ava's sudden embrace."It's not what you think. I just...I need more days to recover" I whispered. Her frown faded, her eyes widening as she released me."You're... you're still in pain?" She stuttered, her silver eyes filled with panic. When I didn't say anything, she ripped my shirt open, exposing the claw marks that decorated my torso and chest in a terrible manner. They were raw and slightly swollen.Tears filled her eyes, her lower lip trembling as her fingers ghosted over my injury. She could no longer look me in the eyes because of the guilt that plagued her. This was because she was the one who had scarred me during her fit of rage and overpowering possessiveness."It's my fault. It's all my fault. Key... I'm so sorry. Why didn't you say--"The door opened and two people walked in. Venom and Ava. As soon as her gaze met mine, rage clouded her eyes. I couldn't blame her. Her mate was standing in an almost intimate position with another woman."Who is she?" Shade asked Venom as I held my torn shirt together, not wanting Ava to see the injury on my body."She's the new recruit, Ava Shelley" Venom responded.Shade sniffed the air. All at once, her expression darkened."She smells oddly... familiar."AVA "She smells oddly... familiar."The silver eyed woman regarded me with a cold gaze as she approached me. "The unfamiliar scent on Keegan's body...came from you?" She queried.Venom sighed and Keegan looked away. "She's just a new recruit, isn't she? How then did she get close enough to Keegan to leave her stench on him?" I frowned, balling my fists in annoyance. The bitch just indicated that my scent was a stench. I didn't have to be a part of the group to know that there was something going on between her and Keegan. This did not put me at ease. Instead, it made my chest burn. "We did not embrace. She bumped into me" Keegan stated. I glared at him. He refused to make eye contact with me. "Do you have a pack?" Shade demanded. I parted my lips to give her an answer. However, Venom beat me to it. "I have interviewed her. She is already a member of the pack"She furrowed her brows and folded her arms across her chest. Venom moved away from my side and started to head toward
AVA The look on Keegan's face was that of disbelief and confusion. This had to mean that he wasn't lying to me. The problem was that, my eyes had never been lilac. Never in my life. I moved backwards and Keegan frowned. "Is this the first time this is happening?" He asked. I didn't give him an answer. I was too caught up in my own head which was already swarming with endless questions of possibilities. So, I took off running. "Ava, wait!"Keegan's voice held concern but I didn't care. I needed to see for myself. I ran until I got to the room I'd been assigned to. I hurried in, locking the door with shaking fingers. Then, I rushed to the bathroom. Once I got there, the sight of my reflection on the mirror hit me hard. For a moment, all I could do was stare. I didn't blink or breathe. I just...stared. My eyes were gleaming with a mysterious brightness. A wave of dizziness washed over me and I stumbled out of the room, fishing my phone out of the pocket of my jeans. With unstea
KEEGAN I stiffened, my fists clenched. I was trapped, I was well aware of this. I couldn't fathom how Shade had discovered that much information in such a short time. Ava's face had gone pale, the horror in her eyes were unmissable. "Why? Cat got your tongue?" Shade drawled, her claws elongating. She was about to behead her. I could tell by the way her claws slowly inched towards Ava's throat. As much as I had chosen to back off from Ava's life. I couldn't let her die this way. For once, I couldn't stand and watch her get killed. "I rejected her" I blurted out and Shade went still. Slowly, she turned to look at me, her eyes narrowed."You did? Then, why is she here?" There was no time. If I didn't give her a reasonable response, Ava was bound to lose her life there and then. "She was exiled from her pack" I lied.Shade cocked a brow, confused. "How is that possible? Her brother is the alpha, is he not?""He is strict when it comes to punishments. Didn't you hear that
AVA A smile curved my lips and I moved my lips to Keegan's ear. "I'm not that easy, you know? If you want a kiss, you have to work for it" I pulled away and Keegan's expression hardened. Clenching his jaw, he turned away from me and walked out of the cell. I knew I'd just caught him unawares. He hated it. I knew this because he utterly detested surprises. After going through my morning routine, I went in search of the pack's gym or training centre. When I walked in, I found Venom pummeling blows into a punching bag. He was shirtless, his skin glistening with sweat. He also had his hair in a messy ponytail. He raised a brow when he saw me. "Ava? What are you doing here?"I shrugged as I approached him. "I'm a bit of a gym freak" I told him and he smiled, brushing a few strands of face away from his face."That explains why you were able to defend my sister at the bar.""Want to spar with me?" I asked. He folded his arms, his biceps bulging. They had me distracted for a moment. "Ar
AVA"What is it now? What do you want from me?" I said."Why won't you stay away from him? He's mine now. Get it through your thick skull" Shade uttered.I frowned. "He was in pain. I couldn't just look away. You must've been watching us. You weren't concerned about him. What kind of mate does that make you?" Shade's eyes darkened, her fists clenched. She was annoyed. It was written all over her face. "You seem to be extremely talented when it comes to pissing me off" The words had barely left her lips when she pinned me against the wall, her fingers wrapped around my throat."You still don't know your place, do you?" She hissed. A smug grin tugged at my lips and her expression faltered, her jaw slackening. "You heard him, didn't you? He rejected me. Why are you so insecure? What? Are you going to compete with a woman your own mate rejected? How pathetic" I knew I shouldn't be running my mouth, but I couldn't resist the urge to do so. Shade's grip on my throat tightened. Instin
KEEGAN Several years ago, I was hot. It was the first thing that registered itself in my brain. Hot sweat dripped down the sides of my face and beads of sweats rolled down my spine in rivulets. My upper body was bare, I realised. Forcing my heavy eyelids open, my blurry vision zeroed in on my younger sister. She was tied to the ceiling, face down. So, was I. There were six empty barrels in the room and on top of each one, was a pair of candles that lit up the room with a warm glow. I looked around the small room, in search of a means of escape. I couldn't find a single window. However, there was a door to my left. Pain shot through my wrists and ankles when I tried to move. "Key?" I froze at the sound of my sister's weary voice. "I'm here. Try not to move, it'll hurt a lot. I'll get us out of here, I promise" She whimpered, I could already sense her fear. "Too hot. Key, I'm scared. I don't want to die" she croaked. The sight of the glistening tears on her face
UNKNOWN They rushed in and knelt in front of my desk, their anxiety peaking. Grunting with displeasure, I leaned back on my seat idly tapping my fingers on the armchair."Speak" I said. Julian, one of my most trusted men rose to his feet. "The mutts are gone. The two werewolves whom we'd managed to capture apparently set them free before our arrival" he said. Pissed, I brought my glass of fresh blood to my lips. "What about the adults? Did they escape?" I asked calmly. Julian gulped, lowering his head. "My lord, please forgive us. We were careless," he stuttered."I am disappointed, Julian" I spat, slamming the glass on the table. "Forgive us, my lord!" My men cried as they bowed their heads. There was a frantic knock on the door. One that drew my attention. "Come in" I ordered. A short blond hurried in. In his hands was a small black box. He placed it on my table."My lord, we found this ring on the scene. We believe it belonged to the woman."With trembling fingers
KEEGAN Earlier that day, "I ...I...love her."Shade's eyes widened, tears crawling down her cheeks as her lower lip trembled. "W-what?"I sighed, my chest was already starting to hurt. It was an effect of Shade's venom. "Why are you telling me this only now?" she asked."All along, I was trying to run away from my reality. But, I've realized that it's nothing but a waste of time. I love her. I always have." Shade's eyes darkened, her face contorted with rage."What about me?! What about the years I've spent by your side?! Was it all a lie?!"My vision turned hazy and I leaned against the wall to steady myself."Let's face it, we were never in love with each other. Our relationship has been nothing but toxic." A tear crawled down her left cheek as she pinned an accusing gaze on me. "You bastard," she hissed. "You might not want to admit it, but it's true. You always want everything to happen in your own favor. You are too selfish to actually enjoy a relationship. Ev
