Marissa

At some point, I must have drifted off. But, as always, I slept lightly. The soft click of my door jolted me awake. My ears strained against the silence. Someone had stepped into my room.

My fingers fumbled for the lamp switch. Light flooded the space, revealing my father standing in the doorway.

Still foggy from sleep, I registered his presence. He grinned, bouncing on his heels like a child with the best news of his life.

What the hell was wrong with this man, barging into my room and acting giddy in the middle of the damn night?

A headache was pulsed at my temples. I shoved my tangled hair back and sat up, rubbing the ache from my skull.

"Do you not understand the concept of knocking?”

He waved a hand. "Why would I knock? I’m the one who gave birth to you."

"Pretty sure that was Mom," I deadpanned. "The one you disrespected every chance you got.”

"Oh, come on, Rissa." He rushed forward , yanking me into an exaggerated hug. "My brilliant, beautiful daughter. My pride. My

Marissa I tossed on Brian’s bed, sleep refusing to come. He had spent the night in his mini-apartment with Sydney since my dad now openly opposed their relationship.Had I known things would spiral this way, I would have stayed at the Lycan lodging. The next morning, I stayed in bed. I had no interest in another argument with my dad after last night. But my stomach growled hungrily after I finished the bottle of nuts in Brian’s room.Avoiding the main areas of the house where I knew my stepmother would be lurking, I slipped down the hallway. But she was already downstairs, perched at the head of the dining table like a waiting vulture."Good morning, honey. Come sit and eat breakfast."For the love of everything holy. The table was arranged with an assortment of dishes, but none looked remotely appetizing. Lilith had never been a great cook—her food was either overcooked, underseasoned, or a mess of both.Ignoring her, I walked into the kitchen and poured myself a bowl of oats, addin

Marissa The drive back to Lycan territory dragged. While others grumbled about returning to work, I was stepping back into a world where my fate had already been decided.I rested my head against the window, watching the landscape shift as Brian and Sydney’s words echoed in my mind.Maybe something’s wrong with him.The thought refused to leave. If Justin truly couldn’t feel the bond, what was I supposed to do?Wait? Hope he somehow figured it out?I refused to believe a mate bond could be one-sided. He knew. He was choosing to ignore it.Even so, my stomach tightened with something I didn’t want to name. Excitement? No. That would be ridiculous. Curiosity, maybe. I shouldn’t be looking forward to seeing someone who flirted with me one moment and dismissed me the next.I was lying to myself. The bond pulled me back to Justin, no matter how much I fought it.---Monday morning, I stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the executive floor. My palm felt damp. As the doors

Justin's POVWatching Marissa take a bite of the vanilla cake caused an unexplainable longing to well up within me. My eyes refused to leave her. There was nothing different about her. The same caramel-colored hair pulled into a bun, the same gray eyes. And yet, I couldn’t look away. She ate the cake with a slow, deliberate ease, her lips wrapping around the fork in a way that made my restraint slip. The urge to close the space between us, to take that plump lower lip between my teeth, nearly sent me out of my chair. I swallowed hard, forcing the thought away. Where the hell was this coming from? She finished the last bite. Her eyes met mine, and my pulse kicked up. The urge to kiss her again settled deep in my chest."You eat cake like it's a goddamn love affair," I said.Marissa froze mid-bite, her lashes flicking up. "Excuse me?"From her tone, I could tell she was suppressing something—desire, irritation—maybe both. It fueled me even more. I leaned in, watching her closely."Y

Marissa "Thanks," I muttered as Linda handed me a cup of coffee and a plate of toast and eggs. The dining hall buzzed with werewolf employees eating breakfast, conversations overlapping around us.Linda was becoming a friend, though I still kept my guard up after what Genevieve had done. Trust didn’t come easily, but since we were both unmarried, we had more in common than most. There was a quiet grace about her that I couldn’t help but notice.I blew on my coffee, sensing she had something on her mind."So… you and Hector?"I blinked, caught off guard. I set my coffee down. "What about me and Hector?"She took a bite of toast, choosing her next words carefully. "Are you two… seeing each other?"I hadn’t expected that. Her tone was casual, but there was something cautious in the way she asked, as if she were testing the waters."Why do you ask?""Just curious."I studied her, piecing it together. Her eyes gave her away."Not really," I said finally. The relief on her face was unmista

Marissa I recovered from the shock of the embrace and leaned into him, feeling his feverish warmth against my body. My concern grew, along with my desire to have my mate.He seemed weaker than usual, yet there was no denying the fact that Justin could never not be good-looking. The scent of the bond mixed with something chalky. Desire washed over me as I tightened my embrace, rubbing his back and feeling the contours of his frame beneath his shirt. His breath was warm on my neck, igniting a fire in my loins as my arousal grew."Are you going to be okay?" I whispered. He pulled away slightly, his eyes flickering up at me briefly before fluttering shut again."Yeah... just a little tired, that's all," he murmured.I wondered if his body reacted to my touch the way mine did."I need to lie down," he said. "Get the laptop to my bedroom."I nodded and picked up the bag. As we entered the room, he leaned against the wall. My gaze fell on his exposed chest, and I wondered where my self-con

Marissa The car rolled to a stop in front of the lodging. The night was quiet, carrying the kind of silence that made everything feel more intimate.I had barely taken two steps when I also heard Justin’s door open. I turned, and he leaned against the car. Without warning, he opened his arms and pulled me into a hug.My first instinct was to push him away—someone could be watching—but Justin didn’t seem to care. I could feel his heartbeat steady against my cheek, and his scent invaded my senses. When I tilted my head up, his lips were on mine. The kiss was slow and drugging, neither of us willing to admit just how much we had wanted this.Justin deepened it, his hands tightening on my waist, and I melted into him. The bond roared to life, making my toes curl. My fingers found the fabric of his shirt, gripping it as if I needed something to anchor me to the moment. But then my mind screamed at me—what if someone saw?I pulled away, pressing my palms against his chest. “People could be

JustinWhen I saw Marissa and her companion, an irrational heat flared up inside me.She laughed, her head tilted slightly as she looked at him with amusement. That smile caused something dark and possessive to curl inside me.The guy held her bag like he was her damn knight in shining armor, standing close enough that if she shifted slightly, they would brush against each other. It was stupid, and I knew it. I had no right to feel this way, but logic didn’t matter. Two nights ago, something had shifted inside me when she had touched, hugged, and kissed me.The pain that had clawed at my insides for days had dulled under her warmth. I didn’t understand it, nor had I told anyone, but Marissa’s presence had done something that neither medicine nor any healer could.Seeing her grinning at another man like she didn’t have a care in the world pissed me off, flooding raw jealousy through my veins.I knew it was overly childish, but I couldn’t stop myself. When the guy was gone, and Marissa

MarissaI heard Justin call my name just as I was heading past the other side of the lounge downstairs. My heart swelled with satisfaction. I had planned this. I saw him leaving earlier, quickly put the pieces together, and decided to take the same route."You must be bored out of your mind if you’re ditching your pathetic excuse of a boyfriend to stalk me," Justin said, smirking as he fell into step beside me.I turned my head just enough to give him a pointed look. "What if I am? What are you going to do about it?""Many things," he winked.I rolled my eyes, walking past him and stepping out into the night. The air was thick and humid, the dim glow of the streetlamps barely cutting through the darkness. The parking lot stretched ahead, mostly deserted, save for a few scattered cars.Justin’s footsteps followed behind me."Are you in any way throwing a bait at me?" he asked, his voice teasing.I smiled to myself. "That depends on what you consider a bait."Before I could take another

Justin I had no plan, neither did I rehearse my words. In fact, I didn’t think for a thousand years that I’d end up being so honest with the public the way I was. But it happened. The words came out of me with a strange calm, as though I had needed to say them all along. My mother allowed a soft smile to curl on her lips, subtle but proud. Meanwhile, Sean's expression twisted, the edges of his mouth tugging downward into a bitter frown. For the longest time, I had believed that vulnerability was weakness—a flaw that could be exploited. But now, as I stood exposed before everyone, I didn’t feel weak. I felt free. Let anyone try to twist the truth. Let them attempt to stain the bond I shared with Marissa. My mother’s smile said it all: sometimes, the ugly truths needed to be told to reclaim power. The judge fumbled with his papers, his fingers shaking slightly. He tried to appear unaffected, but I saw the stiffness in his movements. My mother must have spoken to him in private, perhaps

It was getting harder and harder to stay private with Justin. Our relationship had somehow become the kingdom’s favorite soap opera. Inside the castle walls, everyone had a theory, a rumor, or a “trusted source.” And outside the gates? The paparazzi were practically part of the royal staff.Everywhere we went, someone was snapping photos or asking invasive questions. It was exhausting. I hadn’t realized how many people tracked your every step when you were bonded to a Lycan prince. Now even my outfit, the way I walked, or how I blinked seemed to matter. I found myself second-guessing every detail—was my lipstick smudged? Did my heels click too loud?Justin held my hand as we approached the pizza spot I’d been craving for all week. As expected, the moment we stepped out of the car, the flash of cameras started. A few paparazzi who had been pretending to “just be around” suddenly appeared from all angles, walking backward to keep pace with us.“Prince Justin, is it true you're planning

Marissa The Queen’s rage came with thunder. It wasn’t the typical raised voice or shaking hands kind of anger. It was primal, bone-deep, and terrifyingly loud. Her voice bounced off the ancient stone walls of the royal study like a storm crashing into a cliff. If Sean had been anywhere near her at that moment, she would’ve carved his name off the family tree with her bare hands.I stood still. A part of me was stunned, but the other part missed my own mother. I wondered how she might’ve defended me if she were still alive and if she would’ve gone to war for me too. Maybe it’s just something about mothers. No one quite loves the way they do."Well, I think you're going too far to be taken seriously," Justine muttered with her usual sarcastic flair, sipping casually from her glass. The Queen's head whipped around. Her eyes flared wide and wild. My heart genuinely skipped.“Too far?” she echoed, rising from her seat like storm-given legs. “Hell no. I haven't even started.”Justine bli

MarissaGoing back to work for Justin felt like willingly stepping into a lion’s den. The moment I walked into the building, all eyes were on me and whispers followed me like perfume.Justin and Wendy’s separation wasn’t just public knowledge. It had become entertainment. And now that Justine’s mate was revealed to be a werewolf, people were foaming at the mouth, looking for scraps to gossip about.Everyone had something to say. Some were convinced I was a gold digger, clinging to Justin for luxury and status. Others swore I must’ve used some dark spell to trigger the mate bond. “No way the future king would bond with a mere werewolf,” they said. “Especially not one from a crumbling pack.”If I hadn’t already earned my stripes in heartbreak and humiliation, I might’ve cracked under it all. Even Justin and Justine were beginning to ask if I was okay. I always brushed it off."Trust me," I told Justine two days ago while she was getting her hair done, “you don’t know what survival looks

SeanMy hatred for Justin grew like firewood stacked daily on a flame. Every time I heard his name, felt his presence in a conversation or headline, my blood ran hot. He was my target. I didn’t care that we shared the same blood. I was obsessed over this revenge. Over victory.Everyone thought I’d taken the loss like a man. Calm. Graceful. Accepting. But they had no idea I’d only swallowed my pride to buy time to burn him from the inside out.I would smile, shake hands, laugh when I had to. All while tightening the noose around Justin’s perfect little neck. One step at a time. One move after another.I didn't care whose blood got spilled in the process. Collateral damage meant nothing when I was playing for the crown. He didn’t deserve the throne. I did. I’d worked for it. Bled for it. But life had handed it to him like it was owed. The cursed golden boy with the name, the wolf, the face. While I stood in the shadows, planning how to take it all away.I parked a block away from the sa

Justin “Justin,” Marissa hissed under her breath, her hand tightening on mine. “I don’t trust you. What the hell are you up to?”I handed her the simple plastic bag with the black satin dress I’d picked out, keeping my expression neutral even though I was fighting a grin.“There’s only one way to find out,” I said, tugging playfully at the edge of her tank top. “But I promise, it’s not a kidnapping. Yet.”She squinted at me, not amused. “I swear, if this ends in something ridiculous—”“Shh,” I interrupted, slipping behind her and sliding my arms around her waist. I kissed the soft skin just below her neck, right over the mark I’d given her. She shivered. Jackpot.“If you could read my mind right now,” I whispered against her ear, “you’d be blushing so hard, you’d need aloe vera.”Her reflection in the mirror gave her away. She was flushed. Trying not to smirk. Pretending to be above it, but I knew better.I spun her gently to face the glass and let my hand rest low on her hip. “You

Marissa We were just about done with lunch when the sound of heels echoed down the corridor.Justine paused mid-chew. “Shit… that’s Wendy.”I wasn’t afraid of Wendy, but a sour feeling stirred in my gut. Guilt. Heavy and cold. The kind that clung to your skin and settled in your spine. I hadn’t planned to fall in love with someone else's fiancé. But here I was, sitting next to him at the royal table. The same royal table that the world had assumed she’d own soon.Every magazine had painted their fairytale wedding. The Future Queen. Elegant. Regal. Loved. I’d seen the headlines, the edited spreads of her trying on designer gowns, the speculated venues, the flower arrangements, and the wild guesses about their future pups. She was meant to be Justin’s forever. And now I was the shadow stepping into her spotlight.Wendy stormed into the dining room like a queen without a throne. Her fiery red dress clung to her like armor, and her eyes scanned the room until they landed on me. I dropp

Marissa My eyes widened, and my mouth dropped open the moment Justin blurted out his father’s secret family, right there in front of the Queen and Justine. The air shifted. Cold. Heavy. Like something sacred had just been desecrated. I couldn't dare glance at the Queen. Time slowed. Why the hell couldn’t Justin have kept that to himself?“Justin, this isn’t even funny,” Justine said, her voice sharp as a blade. She shot her brother a glare. “You can joke about a lot of things—but not this. This is too heavy.”“It’s true,” Justin said flatly, eyes fixed on his mother. “I’ve seen the woman. I dare him to deny it.”My hand trembled as I reached for him, trying to get him to stop before this turned into a wildfire. The Queen’s head stayed bowed. Sean looked mortified, and Justine actually stepped back like she’d been pushed.“My dear, it’s not how—” the King started, lifting his hand, “—Justin’s just trying to twist everything to suit his selfish narrative.”The Queen slowly raised her

Justin A soft smile played on my lips as I adjusted the torchlight, lowering the beam so it wouldn’t wake her. I traced the curve of Marissa’s cheek with the back of my knuckle, memorizing the peaceful rise and fall of her chest. I’d never felt this kind of calm before, not once in my life, and I didn’t want it to end. She was the anchor I never saw coming, the balm to everything broken in me.Watching her sleep, I tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Who would’ve thought I’d ever feel normal again? It still didn’t seem real. It felt like I’d stepped into someone else’s life—a simulation too good to be mine. Like at any moment I’d wake up, cursed and hollow, back to being the joke of the royal house. But when I curled my fingers around hers and felt her warmth against my skin, I knew this wasn’t some delusion. This was real. It was here to stay. The pain, the pressure, the doubts… none of it mattered anymore. I felt overwhelmed in the best way—like I could fall to my knees
