“I'm thinking white. I hear it's virgins’ favorite color.”

He paused for a second before the realization of what I said hit him, and I dodged the playful punch heading my way. “I kissed Kira for your information. Even though her tongue tasted like tarp.”

“I'm aware,” I chuckled. “But you did tell me how you chickened out of sleeping with Renée because you were so hard and were afraid you'd wound her during coitus due to her cute little frame-”

“Shut the fuck up,” he said in a serious tone, but the next minute we both erupted into laughter.

He sobered up before me, however, and sighed. “I know the circumstances surrounding the beginning of our friendship were tragic, but I'm really glad we're friends. I hope you know that.”

I grinned. “I do. And I'm glad we are too. You've called me out on my shit more times than I can count, but you're also the only one I'd be proud to have as my best buddy and best man.”

“I'm not wearing white.”

“We'll make it cream then.”

He swore again, and I chuckled. “I swear, if I ever have a wedding, I'd make you the ringbearer.”

“Fall in love first. Then we'd discuss the wedding.”

Another playful punch was thrown in my direction, and I was about to send one of my own back when my phone rang, revealing Tanya's name as the contact calling.

I promptly answered, a smile on my face when I heard her voice. “Hey, gorgeous.”

“Hey Roman,” I heard her say. “How are you?”

“Alright, thanks. You sound well too.”

“Oh, I am. I'm getting married in less than two weeks, so yes. I’m beyond wonderful.” She giggled.

She had a nice laugh.

‘I wonder if her sister has a similar laugh.’

I stilled at the thought, and Julian must have noticed my change in expression, because he gave me a questioning look.

“I'm glad,” I forced out. “Um…so, why did you call? Not that I'm complaining, I just-”

“Oh, right! I'm sorry for not going straight to the point. I'd be going to the mall tomorrow, and I wanted to ask if you'd be willing to accompany me. It always feels like less time has been spent when there's company.”

Julian overheard that and imitated preferring to have a knife slash his throat instead. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, focusing on the call instead.

“Mm, that’s dicey…I'll check my schedule and get back to you. Is that okay?”

“Of course it is. Please, don't stress yourself on my account. If you wouldn't be available, it's fine.”

I chuckled. “You're my fiancée, Tanya. It's perfectly fine.”

“...okay, Roman.”

I was about to say goodbye when a dubious thought entered my mind, and I grinned evilly at Julian, who gave me a puzzled look.

He realized a little too late when he heard the question I asked next.

“Of course he can come!” Tanya's voice was full of joy, while my best friend's face was full of the promise of death. “It'd be wonderful! You know what? I'd bring my sister along. That way it can be a double date!”

And just like that, my growing happiness at Julian's helpless state deflated into nothing. “Of course,” I ground out. “That’d be wonderful.”

She most likely hadn't heard the change in my tone, because she said goodnight the next minute and ended the call, not knowing the turmoil she'd placed my mind into with just a single sentence.

A low chuckle left Julian’s mouth as I dropped the phone on the desk, one edge of his mouth curled to form a smirk. “One good turn deserves another, right?”

“Shut the fuck up.”

Audrey POV:

The day began with a promising outlook. I hadn't had any nightmares, I'd woken up on the right side of the bed, I'd had a beautiful hot shower, I wasn't gloomy as usual- it was going very nicely.

But I'd underestimated goddess Luna once again, because when a satisfied smile had just begun playing on my lips, my stepsister appeared out of nowhere, dressed to the nines, with a horrific proposal.

One I immediately rejected, of course. And would have continued to if my stepmother had not raised a brow when Tanya wasn't looking.

I was pretty sure my heart dropped into my stomach at that look.

Tanya pulled me into her room the moment I agreed, seemingly ignorant of the expression her mother had given me. I chose to not say a word, because no matter what, my stepsister would pick her mother over me. She was her mother, for crying out loud.

“Roman just texted. They're on their way,” she squealed as I tried a pair of pants that she'd offered me. Normally, her waistline was smaller than mine, but I was shocked that I'd been able to zip up easily.

“You've slimmed down that much, huh?” I said drily to myself, watching as she beamed while her hands flew over her phone keyboard. I guessed who she was talking to, and my heartbeat rate increased at the thought.

I had to get it together. So what if I'd kissed the Alpha's wolf and had let him circle my waist-

Hold on a flipping moment.

I hadn't remembered that part for a while.

My eyes widened when I recalled the wolf's action of bringing me closer with its paw, and how it had…oh, Luna.

Apart from being a tradition breaker, was he also a cheat?

My chest squeezed as I looked over at Tanya, who was obviously oblivious to my feelings, her hands still flying over the keyboard while she giggled. She soon stopped, however, and glanced at me.

“Aw. You look so cute! Here, let me do your hair!”

“We're just going to the mall,” I began, then gave up when Diane's face flashed through my mind.

She was faster at hair styling than I remembered, and she soon shooed me out of her room while she retouched her makeup, saying she wanted me to man the front door in case she finished up late.

Essentially, that meant she wanted to finish late.

Dejected, I sat on the couch, almost cursing as Diane stepped out of her room.

“Very good,” she said, looking at my fit. “My daughter is talented.”

I said nothing, focusing on the blank TV.

“You'd do well to serve your purpose, yes?”

I whirled around to see her face, unsure I'd heard her correctly. “Serve my purpose?”

“Well of course, darling.” There was a hint of a sneer on her face.

“You're her servant for today. She told me the Beta is coming as well, which is why she invited you, but you will still act in the capacity of a help. Whatever she needs, you will provide it without question. Unless the Alpha or Beta decides to be a gentleman, you will be at her beck and call. She's not aware of this, by the way, but you know what you must do.” I pursed my lips before releasing a breath. She'd done worse. “Okay.”“Splendid.” She clapped her hands together. “I'd be off now. I have a meeting with the pack's widows. Ensure you do exactly as I say, darling.” Out loud she cried, “Bye Tanya!”“Bye Mother!” my stepsister replied in such a cheerful tone, I wanted to cry. Diane didn't give me a second glance as she turned on her heels and walked out the door. Not too long after, the doorbell rang, and I froze for a millisecond before remembering my place and scrambling to the door.“Um…who is it, please?” “...Roman.” The voice the had just spoken was deep, unfamiliar, bu

Roman POV:By the time we pulled up at the mall, I was a mess. It might not have looked that way outwardly, but my mind was raging with thoughts that threatened to throw my mental health out of balance. Although, if you considered the fact that I was the Alpha of a pack facing numerous battles, now with a bounty on my head, you could say my health was already out of balance. I let out a curse as Julian's voice echoed in my head for the umpteenth time, then blocked him again. Throughout the ride, he hadn't let me rest, constantly indicating that he wanted to talk to me. And I knew what he wanted to speak about, so I didn't let him.“Is everything alright, Roman?”I looked up to see Tanya's worried face, her sister's turned away from us. As usual, my frown melted into an easy smile. “I am, don't worry. I just stubbed my toe.”The worry on her features turned to confusion, below swimming back to worry. “Oh, no! Shall I have one of the mall attendants check for bleeding?”I blinked. “Wha

Now I knew why she'd looked familiar in that file. She looked exactly like her father. I hadn't forgotten Bernard’s face, but Julian had experienced more torture at the man's hand when he started visiting regularly, so it made sense for him to remember his face more clearly. “Okay, but that doesn’t mean-” “Recall that Gatrix-Hill had ties to the Crimson Wolves, Roman. This lady left our pack about three years ago, around the same time that they officially announced to be residing in human civilization.” I paused. “What?”He scoffed. “I’m the Beta. I did my homework. And everything points to the fact that she might be dangerous. Very, very dangerous.” I said nothing for a while. “What if she isn't?” I retorted, plastering a smile on my face as Tanya finally came out wearing an exquisite gown, her eyes twinkling. The girl Audrey stood behind her, hands clasped and headed down, as though she was her servant. That same sweet scent appeared as she raised her head, and an odd feeling

I stared at him in disbelief. “You've concocted all of these on an assumption, and instead of finding out what the truth is, you're here accusing me?” He blinked. “On the contrary, I'm trying to find out the truth from the horse's mouth. The horse, in this case, if you haven't realized, is you.”We went silent for a few seconds after he said that, our eyes boring into each other, but I soon snapped out of it and moved back before glaring at him.“Tanya needs me,” I stated firmly, whirling around and heading for the changing room. The Alpha was a lot worse than I thought. At first I'd assumed he was only looking at me because I looked very pitiful as always, but to accuse me of having something to do with the rogues that attacked him the other day, as well as trying to seduce him to get back at Tanya-I stilled as electricity zipped through my arm and into my brain, and inside me, my wolf let out a whimper. I turned immediately to see what had caused it, only to find a hand on my arm

Roman POV:Audrey persuaded me to walk back into the mall alone so she could join us all a few minutes later with some flimsy excuse. I'd been against that, my wolf wanting to be near her instead, but I knew in that moment that it was probably best to do as she said. I had no idea why she was so afraid of Diane, but I was willing to go along with what she said. The first thing I noticed was the manner in which my to-be mother-in-law was dressed as she gushed over her child's dress.“Aw, look at my baby!” Diane was saying as I walked in. She was teary-eyed, but I didn't miss the disguised glare she sent my way. Instead of responding in that moment, I went to stand beside Julian and observed the situation.Diane was decked in a terribly official suit, like she was going for a diplomatic mission. Knowing her, she wasn't dressed like that without purpose, and I noted my Beta glaring at her with suspicion.“Roman, darling!” the she-devil suddenly said in a fake, high-pitched voice. “Could

“Julian,” I called. His eyes, which were on the three women giggling among themselves (well, the two women; Audrey was shivering) slid to me before moving back to them. “Yeah?”“We've got a big problem.”He snorted. “I would never have guessed.” ♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎Audrey POV:Thankfully, Diane had made some excuse about needing to be somewhere and had left almost as soon as I arrived. But from the Beta and Alpha's quietness after her departure, I knew something had gone wrong. Tanya was oblivious, as usual. It wasn't long before we set to return to our pack, and unlike it had been the first day I returned, my wolf had been restless throughout the ride back to our territory. Tanya obviously felt my disturbance, but I kept sending forced smiles her way and sagging against the car seat whenever she wasn't looking.I knew exactly why I was feeling that way, and it was killing me. In the rearview mirror, Roman was constantly trying to catch my eye, but I couldn't let him. I was afraid that one sl

I mean, it made so much sense now, seeing the type of person she was normally. But finding out that she and my stepmother had once again forsaken proper tradition for their selfish interest had me stumped. Knowing Diane, she'd most likely used a very convincing method to rope the Alpha in, and I almost felt sorry for him. I was also very angry considering the fact that it was my mate who'd been roped into such a thing. “That dress looked terrible on you, by the way,” she suddenly said, and I was pulled out of my reverie. I almost thought I hadn't heard her properly. “...what?” She smiled up at me, looking so innocent that one would not believe it was venom dripping from her words. “That thing I said outside about the dress being lovely on you was a lie. I just didn't want him to think his offer to pay was not appreciated.” I stared at her in disbelief, my initial thoughts now shoved to the back of my mind. “You could have just told me. I'd have returned it instead of-” “Bad as i

“What do you want?” I snapped. “Mate,” it complained, startling and annoying me at the same time. I stared at her, first wondering why I couldn't perceive that sweet scent of hers, then asking myself what the hell she was doing outside the pack house.Jacob had apparently placed the entire pack house on lockdown, meaning that no one would have been able to leave the compound if they hadn't snuck out. “I need space, Mother.” A sob raked its way out of Tanya's throat. “And I'd prefer if you just-”“Come on, Tanya.” Diane felt desperate now. This had gone on for long enough. “Please. Let me help out, at least.”Silence greeted her statement, and then she heard a loud sigh. Seconds later, a puffy-eyed and bedraggle haired Tanya stared at her. “You can help out by staying out, Mother. But since you just wouldn't give up, come in.”Seeing that look on her daughter's face almost broke Diane, but she kept her emotions in check.Tanya flopped on the clustered bed, and her mother, momentarily forgetting her mission, examined the situation with concerned eyes. “Don't you try to say something derogatory against me,” the younger woman suddenly said, startling her mother. “I’m grieving, Mother.”“I was not going to,” Diane replied, clearing an area with her hand and sitting there. “I was just…it's a mess.”“I'm a mess. It's just a reflection of how I feel right now.” Subconsciously, Tanya's h

If I could describe it, I'd call it electric. Just like the time our eyes met.“Can I-” he paused, seeming surprised that his voice had dropped by an octave, then chuckled embarrassedly. “No. It's too soon.”“What is?” I whispered, not wanting to distort the mood that had been created.I didn't miss the way his gaze dropped my lips and slowly traveled back up to my eyes, and my wolf protested when he stepped back from me. “It's nothing. I'll be back soon.” “But Alpha-”“Oh, and,” he said with a slight frown. “You should stop calling me Alpha. Call me Roman.” Immediately, I shook my head. “That would make it seem like I'm competing with Tanya for your heart. I won't…I can't do that. Not to her.”Hearing my stepsister's name, his eyes dimmed, and he looked away. “It doesn't matter anymore.”I was pretty sure I had a confused expression at that moment. “What do you mean? I couldn't deny the truth. “I'm so sorry, Tanya. I didn't mean for it to happen-” “It’s my fault.” There were tears in her eyes now. “I should never have told Mother to ask her to come back home. Then we would have gotten married, and I'd have been yours. You would have been mine. It's my fault.”“Tanya-” “I hate her so much.” The solemn way she dropped that statement made me pause. “...what?”Her tear-stained eyes looked directly at me, and I saw a storm blooming in them. “I said,” she sniffed. “That I hate her. I hate her so much.”Then she turned and fled.Julian came out not long after that with on unconscious Diane. “Had to put her out,” he grimaced, opening the door of a car I hadn't noticed before. “She was calling me a child.” I didn't know how to reply to that.He waved me over after he'd got into the driver's seat. “Get in. You need to give that official statement of yours, and soon. Diane's goons are still there.” I did as he'd said, and soon after, I'd dropped Audrey

After checking her out, the doctor told me that she'd ingested silver, but not up to the lethal dose. Which was why she still lived. Otherwise, she would have died. I'd wondered where she'd gotten it from till I remembered the silver handcuffs on the wall that were used to chain prisoners while in the cell. I hadn't had the heart to use it on her, but hearing that she'd tried to kill herself using it…Jacob was right again, I thought as I rocked her now warm body. She'd been miserable. And it'd been my fault. She was obviously scared, and despite finding out that she was my mate, she'd begged me not to leave Tanya. She'd pleaded her case multiple times. Despite what I'd thought, locking her up hadn't been the best solution. There could have been alternatives. I sighed and cuddled her closer to me, my wolf letting out a small sound of pleasure at the contact, and we stayed there in silence for a while till I heard loud noises.Less than a minute later, Diane stood at the door of the

“Thank you, Marcus.” She laughed again and tapped his arm thrice. “I must say, I wasn't sure you were going to make it.” His green eyes roamed her body shamelessly. “For you, Diane, how could I not? You're a very good friend.”A few meters away, Julian wanted to vomit. But he forced himself to stay put and survey the perimeter for more threats apart from Diane and the infamous Marcus Henderson. He'd been very close to dethroning that king a couple of times in his covert operations but failed each time. Hearing that fool flirt with Diane like they were horny teenagers caused invisible leeches to feast on his intestines. Roman hadn't responded to his calls that morning, neither had he texted. And when Julian had decided to visit his home, he'd found it empty. The thought of Roman going to the prison to see Audrey had floated in, but he'd pushed it out almost immediately. Even if he'd done that, he couldn't, or, shouldn't have waited till the following morning. That would be a reckles

He looked surprised at my question, then turned away. “She's not good at all. And she’s malnourished.”I frowned at that. “I specifically told the warden to give her food-” “She's not eating it,” he interjected, the scowl back on his face. “She's deliberately starving herself, Alpha. Because she wishes to die.” It seemed like a silver knife was lodged in my chest at those words. I stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean by she wishes to die? It’s only been about a week and a half since she was detained-” “It's been about a week and a half to you, Alpha, to her? To her, it's like an eternity!” As soon as he said that, he turned on his heels and stomped off, leaving me stupefied. The following day, when darkness had ruled for about four hours, I stepped out of my house to visit the prison. I would have gone the night before, but Tanya had called, and I was unable to leave the call as early as I wanted to. Jacob surely wasn't serious, I thought as I marched down the path to

Roman POV:The elders murmured among themselves after I dropped the information about the rogue attack. Julian and Jacob stood behind me, both of them looking like they wanted to flee the room.I wanted to as well. But for the sake of the pack, we remained. “That's the third one in less than three weeks,” someone commented. “This is getting worse.” “It's like they just spring out of nowhere!” Kennedy yelled, slamming his fist onto the table. I frowned at that but kept my peace. “What in Luna's name is going on?!” “My Beta has some reports he'd like to give,” I announced. Julian nodded when I called him up and stepped forward. The expression on some of the elders’ faces switched to disgust, while some exuded fear. The child of the former Alpha's maid, now Beta, is rumored to be a killing machine. They weren't wrong on both counts. I pursed my lips, recalling the way my best friend sped to Audrey and captured her neck in a vice grip. I'd spoken to him earlier and warned him never

“Beta Julian!” Jacob yelled. “Beta, please, let her go. There are better ways to discuss this.” The Alpha was quiet. The Beta turned to my best friend and raised me even higher so that I was now gasping. “I should let her go, hm?” His eyes were blazing, but his voice remained deathly calm. “Read the letter.” Jacob didn't move. “She's about to choke to death. She needs proper trial first before we condemn her for whatever-” “Read the damn note, Jacob.” The man turned to glare at me. “Then you'll find out why she's a traitor.” “I…” I wheezed. “I really *cough* didn't do that-” My lungs were burning, and I was struggling to take air in. The Beta, on the other hand, looked like he could do that all day. His eyes flashed with anger as he tightened his grip.“Let her go, Julian,” a familiar voice with a withdrawn tone said, just as I was about to become unconscious.“Roman.” The Beta sounded disgruntled.“Now.” I could sense the reluctance in his gaze as he released his hold on me,
